Google only has so much power. If they want yo offer some of these services they news to cooperate with Netflix, MPAA, etc. I think some of these blogs/people are blowing this out of proportion.
Tapa tapa tapa

The article sounds a bit hysterical to me, going for fearmongering which surprises me coming from Kendrick who I usually agree with. This feels like those Apple commissioned "Android is tracking you too!" articles that came out during the recent iPhone privacy problems.
The fact that both Netflix and Google are doing this only with videos makes very clear what is inspiring it...they are afraid of getting sued by some deep-pocketed movie studio in an RIAA style vendetta because some wizkid found a way around DRM on a rooted device and passed 100 copies of Avatar 5 or something. At the very least that possibility could make the studios deny their content to Android while still suppling it to tight-as-a-drum iPhones and ipads. That would be bad.
This seems like an altogether healthy and intelligent step for Google to take to protect android's future growth. I can't see Andy "Privacy? Where?" Rubin fighting an all out campaign against rooted Android devices...and the carriers won't since they they know rooted phones are a big draw against the iPhone.
This is definetly bloggers just looking for negative android stories to please Cupertino.

i dont think anything will happen for rooted users.
its what makes android / google so unique, Free from the closed source community.
if they where to clamp down on rooted users it would put off a lot of users, maybe making them switch to another OS.. google dont want that.
Anyway, its our device so its upto us what we do with it, we know that rooting voids our warranty / improves chances of bricking, but we do it still...
android is for the experienced phone user, if it wasnt hackable, i dont think we would like it so much

I sure hope not and I pray that this doesn't catch on. With HTC doing their best to make rooting custom ROMs impossible and app vendors deciding they don't want to run on rooted phones at all that might give others ideas ... When all's said and done jailbroken iPhone users might have more freedom than we do.

First, I know that it is true, but it is not the first step in an antirooting war that Kendrick tries to present it as. Therefore, it is fearmongering.
Second, since all such downloads go through Apple's proprietary money spinner called iTunes, it is a much more controllable environment than android with the market. Apple has pledged itself from the first iPod to be all about DRM....Google not so much.

Tell HTC how happy you are with the locked bootloaders

Hey guys,
here is HTC Facebook page.
Looks like it is starting to pick up with people complaining about the bootloader being locked.
Maybe we can all jump on there and let them know how happy we are that they are doing this, along with what other phones we will be buying now.
Hit thanks!

Here is what i wrote,
Signed/Encrypted bootloaders... Come on HTC... This really pisses me off. Think about it, really, what are you losing here? Almost nothing. It is the persons choice to root, so you lose no quality control.
But back onto the actually point. Signing/encrypting bootloaders or other functions of a device that a consumer owns was considered a radical idea. It was frowned upon and was thought of as childish. And that is how you guys are acting, childish. You lock down your phones because your scared of what.... progress?
I understand there are some problems for you with rooting. For example, free wireless tethering, ability to use leaked ROMs and other factors. But this is such a small hand off to wage war with developers. Microsoft did it, Sony did it, even Apple did it.... Look were they all are now. The hackers do everything they can to make sure they can hack and DOMINATE the devices they lock down. In Microsoft's and Sony's case, there is a difference in reason, piracy. Now, tell me, if I can already install any app on my phone, what piracy are you protecting users form by not allowing them to do anything custom with their phone?
You have brought the whole world a step backwards, as a lot of people believe in your philosophies, and eventually will standardize them. What this about to start is enormous, there is no problem right now for you because people aren't even trying to hack your gay signature checks. Why? Because those developers DONT BUY THAT PHONE. ------->DONT<---- Buy that phone. Now, once that this standdard is implemented with every single modern phone, you guys will be tormented by the constant stream of hacks and exploits the a full force of developers can bring. You will be stressed to the point as the iPhone jailbreaking scene replicates itself to Android devices.
I mean come on HTC, do you really want to start all of this? I wouldn't. By not locking down your devices, you gain more customers(even though its a small percent that would leave because of your decisions), you gain a better view from people as a good company, and you get the benefit of geeks saying good things about you on their blogs. Yes HTC, thats were all the reviews come from, US. We will spare you no mercy in our reviews if you condemn us to this treatment any longer.
On a final note, i hope to rethink your decisions to sign/encrypt bootloaders and other parts of the phone. The whole point of Android is to be OPEN, not CLOSED. Thats what makes it different. The point is to be open, no matter what COST or FACTORS convince you otherwise. I do not even want to buy the HTC Evo 3D now because of your changes. Now HTC, rethink what you have done, please, and see if you can change it before it gets out of hand. In the end, you are the company that gets to make the decisions, but we are the consumers who buy your products.
Thanks so much for a great ride so far HTC,
You will be missed

Who knows. Corporate lawsuits are always on going and will always be something excepted. Most of the time they are used as a way of stopping your competitors or at least trying to compete against you. Really not very legitimate. Apple is a prime example. They steal from others, like Microsoft has done for many yrs and start legal action. I can't make this stuff up, research it.

havent tried it yet, but from screenshots I guess I can see why people would say that. So were going from xbox looking to winmo7 looking? I guess its a slight improvement... aside from aesthetics, does it navigate better? The thing I like about android is that it will probably change way before winmo does, just like TW will move on from its similarities to iOS way before iOS does... so who cares? As far as lawsuits, it does appear to just be corporate tactics, even if just to get a headline on engadget for a day, free advertising. I love apples one of wanting to see what samsung has coming in the future... looks like apple is developing something new, and this is how they do it!

This, not settled yet (patent purchases from nortel still need reviewed by trade commission and fcc), and...
Firstly, love the new market.
Second, good freaking luck if microsoft tried that. Remember, this just the market's new interface. The "look and feel" you're refering to is windows phone 7's entire homescreen UI. Apples to oranges
On a side note; this is exactly why I think that a lot of apple's suit against samsung I going to go down in flames. They're trying to compare iOS's homescreen UI to touchwiz's app drawer. This would make te other half of the suit, that the external hardware appearance of the device's look similar, also somewhat shaky. I have a hard time believing that a judge will buy the arguement that people are choosing one device over another because of the external aesthetics alone (if you go with my first theory that the UI part will be thrown out), considering there have certainly been other devices with a middle select button that were never taken to court.

Apple thinks that they invented electronic devices. They have some pretty wild claims. Glad they don't make cars.....could you imagine that mess? They'd be claiming they invented the wheel, anything with 4 wheels is just copying them. They'd be trying to trademark items like "Sports Car", or "Coupe", and "Windshield Wiper".
They need to be slapped down with common sense approaches in the legal system.

Good post, this is actually pretty spot on in my opinion. All these apple lawsuits accomplish 2 objectives for Apple as far as I can see.
1) Gets Apples name out in the tech blogs/sites regularly and gets the publicity.
2) Makes software and hardware manufacturers spend more time dealing with public/court/etc. After all, time is money.

As Apple said, its about the "Ecosystem" they don't have to be right...they just have to point fingers....
It kinda works like this, if you keep claiming a person is a "murderer" and spread the word around, people somewhere deep down will partly believe it. Negative news travels faster then positive news. So the general public will gain the impression that everyone is "Stealing" or "Copying" Apple regardless of whether its true or not...

Which phone is this? But I think the problem is that most likely Samsung didn't actually patent the design of their phone. Thats what Apple does. They patent everything in the broken patent system, especially generic non-tangible things like the rough layout of their UI. They even go as far as to trademark the "highway 280" logo for their IOS maps app. Then they go off and sue everyone that relatively may somewhat be sorta kinda similar to them. All this instead of simply making a new and more innovative product. Hey if you can't beat em, litigate em.

Well I will probably get flack for this, but here goes. Before you get all happy about this aquisition by Google. Remember who Motorola has been in bed with for the better part of their phone "Greatness" , Verizon . The original we're going to throttle your data, you better not be tethering (even though your paying for unlimited) , if we can't charge you for it you can't do it, we're going to control everything you do on your phone carrier. So even though it's Google new company, the employees are still the old regime. With the old habits, especially the Executives. I'll always remember a quote from one of Verizon's press releases stating " the Companies bottom line is always the most important aspect in considerations involving customers" . I understand this true for any company. But to say it in a press release like that says a lot about how they perceive their customer base. Yes, I understand this is only my opinon
No flack here, you make avalid point

i live in seattle and googles from redmond, theyve been on the news about this quite a bit and theyve even said themselves they just wanted the patent portfolio to help in defending android and the developers against apple, microsoft and the rest of the other bull**** patent trolls.
I see where this will certainly help Google, and Motorola, with regards to patent lawsuits. But how will this help Samsung, and HTC? Is Google going to step in, and say "Get out of here, patent troll....check this out....PWNT!!!"

I'd imagine that since these patents are typically incredibly vague such as "scrolling menus" that if Apple sues HTC or Samsung over infringing on one of their vaguely worded patents then Google could jump in and brandish one of their equally vague patents and say that Google actually has the patent for it, not Apple.

Edit: In regards to the post above there is no real reason to buy HTC
1)they are doing great on there own
2) HTC would not give up sense and google would not want sense
3) HTC would be like 3X the amount that Motorola was
4)Motorola already had made the commitment to android and that was its sole operating system unlike HTC where they make phones for WP7 and Android.
4) Motorolas patent portfolio is much bigger
5) Motorolas not getting sued lol
Just my 2 cents theres probably other reasons too
Google did it for the Patents
I heard its to help cover their a$$ with apple lawsuits

hopefully samsung won't control the development otherwise devices might not receive updates anymore
So is this good or bad for us? I dont think i would be able to live with out any more updates for my phone running cyanogenmod.
Could a thread title possibly be more misleading??? I'm kinda scratching my head at some of these replies after reading the article. Nobody bought CM! The CM dev was hired on at Samsung!
Well, considering Cyanogen is the developer's nickname and CyanogenMod is the ROM he's developed, what's wrong with the title?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
If this is true, and Steve continues to work on his "side project" after Samsung forbids him to do so, he could find himself facing an onerous lawsuit from his employer.
It is known as a form of "poison pill". A company hires someone who can or does make a dent into their profits. After a while, they "discover" his work and forbid him to work on it ever again. He continues to work on it and the employer sues, claiming millions in lost revenue. At best, he is out hundreds of thousands before he settles out of court.
From someone who has seen this scenario played out more than once...
Edited title of this thread due to confusion.
Cyanogen = Developer of CyanogenMod
CyanogenMOD = ROM that was developed by Cyanogen
Samsung hires Cyanogen. The CM ROM won't be affected, since it is a side project of his. He is currently employed, and developing his ROM isn't his full time job (although developing constantly, you could make a case for it being a full time job!). CM the ROM won't be affected by this. Updates will continue as always, and Samsung has nothing to do with the CM ROM.
The CM Team was given a Samsung phone a while back and told to "get CM7 running on it", which was pretty cool on Samsung's part. I am sure they are interested in the ROM, since it is great, and updates are frequent to address issues that arise. BUT Samsung does not own the CM ROM, they've merely hired the ROM's creator, Cyanogen.
I think this is a huge leap forward for both samsung and the CM7 community.
Sent from my 2.3.5 Incredible Obsession
the way i see it, win win
Samsung got another dev to work on their android lineup
Cyanogen got a new job because he has a rom for...countless devices (most of which have been EOL'd by now, namely the OG droid and Droid Incredible) on his resume.
this will not effect cm7, at all, he will continue to operate it as a side-project, samsung did this because they want to keep up with Sense and MotorBlur. (touchwiz has room for major improovements too)

THEY should know better, but this is the problem with amateur journalism that lacks any sort of valid editorial process.
I doubt this will mean any kind of merge though, for those wondering. I see lots of confidentiality agreements in this man's future, and possibly having to divorce himself from the CM project to some degree to avoid questions of intellectual property ownership. Just my thought....
Congrats to Steve “Cyanogen” Kondik. I see a lot of good coming from this.

everything looks cool but the part where you look at the weather to check weather is just stupid...
yeah, I heard about these. They're meh, not my thing. Having a phone that does it all is more then enough, I can't imagine having a screen in front of your eye telling you useless info 24/7.
Getting facebook updates from your stoner brother updating his status to 'chillin' 8x a day, would be enough to smash them in no time
They already have a parody about these on YouTube.

Chuck Norris can but Walker Texas Ranger can't.
Most of the Android apps I use have ads plastered all over them, there's no reason to suppose these glasses will be any different.
I just wonder how long it will be before someone is killed wandering around blindly using these things. As if being "powered" by Google isn't bad enough, the safety implications are quite obvious.

We are already at risk with people texting and driving and being general morons with phones anyways. Glasses might make things worse but I'd think they might see what's in front of them one day with them on. I say go for it, I would want them until they had retinal implants with a neural interface of some sort.

Think it is neat, but really this has safety hazards written all over the place.
When is enough going to be enough. I betcha it catches on though, lol!

As catastrophic as it's gonna be, people are gonna buy it, it's the next best thing, so screw safety, lol.

Cool! But I’m sure Apple will sue anyone who tries to manufacture them!
Since they hold "retina display" patent already, they will certainly try to apply to everything to squeeze as much money as they can.
I like the design, but we already have a big enough problem with texting and driving deaths. The last thing we need is another distraction.
