it appears that Samsung and Google have decided not to launch the Galaxy Nexus (or Nexus Prime, or whatever it's called) and Ice Cream Sandwich at their October 11th Unpacked event. The two companies sent out a joint announcement reading:
Samsung and Google decide to postpone the new product announcement at CTIA Fall. We agree that it is just not the right time to announce a new product. New date and venue will be shortly announced.
The press event on the 11th was expected to be not only the debut for the successor to the Nexus S, but our first good look at the next version of Android. For whatever reason the companies have decided to delay that launch. But, if Eric Schmidt is true to his word, we shouldn't have to wait too much longer... he did promise us that it would launch by November. We'll let you know as soon as we get a new date to expect "something big."
Update: A Samsung spokesperson issued a follow up statement to CNET, confirming speculation that the reveal was postponed out of respect, following the passing of Steve Jobs. "We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs's passing," the spokesperson explained.

Ladies and gentlemen, a national tragedy has happened this past week
the delaying of ICS..many of us shall be in mourning
Something called respect. ICS would totally over shadow the passing of Jobs. Its a classy move on part of Google and Samsung.

Do the people from columbia have a different definition of respect?
(even though I joke I do agree it was the right call by google and samsung)

Couldnt agree more. Not only that, but if they did go through with the event they probably would have gotten a lot of criticism from people who didnt realize this was planned out far in advance.
Totally understandable and couldn't expect less...
Nice move.
Respect where respect is due. RIP Steve!

I understand the whole "respect for the dead" thing, but it still feels "weird" that they would delay this with all the lawsuits that Apple and Google had.
Would anyone else here do the same thing if you were constantly getting sued?...

you can be sarcastic all you want, but the truth is, other people respected steve, but steve respected noone publicly.
i can almost guarantee that he would not have put off a keynote due to someone else's death.
the man, while brilliant and revolutionary, was a ****
If you read.....they are only delaying the announcement not the release date. The delay of the announcement days after Steves passing is respectable and I actually like google/samsung more for doing so. Without the launch of the phone I think smartphones wouldn't be where they are today due to competitiveness.
It's basically just good public relations.
You don't want to make a major product announcement in an environment where it is not the biggest story of the day. The tech press and the mainstream media are still focused on Jobs and Apple.

no, ICS is the next Android update that Google is making. it's going to merge Honeycomb and Gingerbread into one OS, and then it will be released to companies like Moto and Samsung. then we will see an ICS update in the future, with blur or touchwiz incorporated into the system.
it's just the next major update to Android ICS = Ice Cream Sandwich.

What does that have to do with Sprint? You're just stating bugs from the galaxy s line.. not carrier specific. Except for the keyboard but I have been through stock rom, and custom roms and have never had an issue like this. Same with my wife who also has the Epic.

I like how he says, "...what the big announcement was all about...", implying there will not be an announcement now.
No offense meant, but all the secrecy going around this rumor is kinda building up a paper castle.
SamsungJohn works for Samsung, not Sprint. He can't offer us anything that affects Sprint (our contract holder) unless they've worked out a deal before-hand and, even then, Sprint would be the face of the offering. Why would Sprint's partner, Samsung, skip them completely and go directly to the customer? These aren't appliances.
I doubt they worked out a deal beforehand because the whole XDA debacle would have never happened. It would have been presented behind the scenes well before we ever caught wind of it.
So, yes, I'm curious, too, but don't get your hopes up too much. Remember, "HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT" doesn't mean the same thing to one person as it does the other. Expect crap but hope for diamonds and somewhere in between lies the truth.
Noobnl speaking makes me think a little bit. When he says "future is bright"....well I'm encouraged.
My first thought? Xda will act as samsungs beta grounds...which would mean full disclosure.
I'm imagining us receiving full device driver source code...
Think about...we could theoretically port every android update on our own. Which honestly would be nice, and really, a win-win for everybody..
Samsung wouldn't have to put in the man power or money to update our phones, and we would still have access to every current update...samsung would then have a bunch of happy customers without breaking a sweat...
Because I mean really, wouldn't we all be happier with the source code over an ota anyday?
I think I might have the nail on the head...

I have talked to him MSN Messenger and I can't say what the big announcement was because that would make too much sense and ruin the constant "wtf is going on?" aura that surrounds the Epic support from Samsung and Sprint, I can tell you that eventually something will happen.

yeah its still up in the air to who the next nexus phone is going too.
Well I will probably get flack for this, but here goes. Before you get all happy about this aquisition by Google. Remember who Motorola has been in bed with for the better part of their phone "Greatness" , Verizon . The original we're going to throttle your data, you better not be tethering (even though your paying for unlimited) , if we can't charge you for it you can't do it, we're going to control everything you do on your phone carrier. So even though it's Google new company, the employees are still the old regime. With the old habits, especially the Executives. I'll always remember a quote from one of Verizon's press releases stating " the Companies bottom line is always the most important aspect in considerations involving customers" . I understand this true for any company. But to say it in a press release like that says a lot about how they perceive their customer base. Yes, I understand this is only my opinon
No flack here, you make avalid point

Wouldn't make sense. HTC makes great phones but do not have the large patent portfolio that Moto has built up over many years in the mobile industry.

i live in seattle and googles from redmond, theyve been on the news about this quite a bit and theyve even said themselves they just wanted the patent portfolio to help in defending android and the developers against apple, microsoft and the rest of the other bull**** patent trolls.
I see where this will certainly help Google, and Motorola, with regards to patent lawsuits. But how will this help Samsung, and HTC? Is Google going to step in, and say "Get out of here, patent troll....check this out....PWNT!!!"

I'd imagine that since these patents are typically incredibly vague such as "scrolling menus" that if Apple sues HTC or Samsung over infringing on one of their vaguely worded patents then Google could jump in and brandish one of their equally vague patents and say that Google actually has the patent for it, not Apple.
^ Shift Faced
just so yall know i didnt see a splash screen for this new motoroogle or googlerola or whatever you want lol (it has only been a day) so i decided to make one. I posted it on im.nick.hellos new thread for splash screens along with some others i made.
I just have to wait for him to convert them into splash img format and a flashable.
SO GO CHECK IT OUT
BTW: I hope im not hijacking the thread. I dont think i am because it is technically about the thread in a way. but if i am please set me straight!
Edit: In regards to the post above there is no real reason to buy HTC
1)they are doing great on there own
2) HTC would not give up sense and google would not want sense
3) HTC would be like 3X the amount that Motorola was
4)Motorola already had made the commitment to android and that was its sole operating system unlike HTC where they make phones for WP7 and Android.
4) Motorolas patent portfolio is much bigger
5) Motorolas not getting sued lol
Just my 2 cents theres probably other reasons too
Google did it for the Patents
I heard its to help cover their a$$ with apple lawsuits

Yeah, they must be broke, right? I mean, hey, Apple as a company only made $9.39B in 2010 (profits, not income).

Actually, Bono has said Apple was the biggest contributor to (Red). And there are plenty of speculations that he did anonymous donations.
What a inhumane and downright crappy comment to manke, about anyones death.
My heart, as an Apple fanboy, goes out to Apple, Job's family, and his friends.

That would be interesting to see (that he or Apple have done any charitable works), but unless its on paper, it's simply hearsay.
He established a foundation in '86 if I remember correctly, but apparantly the guy who he left to manage it said Jobs didn't seem very interested in maintaining it and was more focused on Apple (which he should have been to a certain degree, obviously if there's no money coming in, how can he help anyone, right?).
But the fact of the matter is, his charitable contributions seem to be nil. There's no reason to hide helping people out. You can be quiet about doing it, sure. But to leave no trail of it existing? Not so sure about that.
And to clarify, if his will ends up giving/establishing charities or anything of the like, good for him and RIP. But until then, I can't feel much for the guy.
There will be no jokes about how the latest iPhone was a the proverbial nail in the... well never mind.
As a innovator he was truly a genius. As a businessman and a promoter, he was second to none. He was a man living ahead of his time. What ever your opinion of Apple, the World has truly lost one of its best.
R.I.P. Steve Jobs
I hate Apple but R.I.P. Steve Jobs
I'm no Apple fanboy either, but it's likely that without Steve Jobs, I wouldn't be sending this message on my Galaxy Tab right now.
He was a bastard. He was also a visionary. RIP. It will be interesting to see if Apple can remain the innovator it was or if lawsuits will be its next big thing.
R.I.P Bro. He made a big change in the world with apple.
My first computer was an Apple ][+
I'll always have respect for the man and his vision, even if I disagree with the way Apple has been conducting business over the last few years.
RIP Steve Jobs - one of the great thinkers of our time.
(oh, and kudos to Google for the link on their homepage)
A person who made technology so popular among common people. RIP Steve...

Really bro??? Come on man, how can you speak ill of the dead? He was a visionary and revolutionized the mobile industry. I'm pretty confident in saying that if it wasn't for him and apple we wouldn't have the devices we have today, as advanced as they are.

It makes me feel warm and fuzzy knowing that people think the same thing as me. TBH, without him riling up the market like he did, we wouldn't have most of the devices we love so much today.

He was a bat-**** insane bastard for a long long time. How does him dying change that?
Im no apple fan either but without jobs pushing tech along and forcing others to improve their own products the devices we have now would be very different.
RIP Steve Jobs
I dont hate him at all. Call him a nemesis. When it all boils down he was an amazing visionary and set the bar for the industry time and time again.

I used "bastard" in the affectionate way.
Rest In Peace Steve Jobs. Technology was dramatically changed by this man. Not just computers, but technology. Respect due.
