optimize videos for moto G - Moto G General

I have a few videos I want to keep and view on my Moto G 8GB. the problem is they weigh quite a lot and of course I don't need them to since the screen is small and the resolution is not 1080p... any idea what the "optimal" settings for a video on the moto G are? and if there's some sort of software that I can use to do it as easily as possible.

As I understand your problem. You need to watch 1080p videos and don't want to keep them on the phone using space, right ?
If so keep reading.
Use an OTG cable man.
It supports USB(Just remember to format the pen drive into fat32 file system)
And Try MX Player or VLC player.
For MX, don't forget to install either the ARMv7 codec
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mxtech.ffmpeg.v7_vfpv3d16
OR the neon version
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mxtech.ffmpeg.v7_neon
Carry your videos anywhere without actually having having to use space on the phone itself.

Agreed, OTG cables are cheap, they're like... 2 dollars?
Or you can just get a OTG flasdrive, a Meenova SD adapter.

Rockplay Lite work for you? It's worked for me...
it says "Not play hardware codec, move to software codec!!"
wtf lol
just downloaded rockplayer. It gives me the choice of using software or hardware codec but both fail. Downloading a new movie....
I know this is slightly off topic, but I have been using DVD Catalyst to rip DVD's for my Xoom and I am extremely impressed with the ease of use and the quality of the converted files. The files play perfectly with the default movie player full screen and the "volume maximizer" works very well.
I know this may not help if you already have DVD rips as I know converting files multiple times does not always work very well, but thought I should mention it.
I do not work for them, just a happy customer.
Just tried another video in both players, same problem. Any ideas?

Wait, I thought the Xoom could play many different formats.
Use MoboPlayer
You need to use the Moboplayer. Get it from the market or from their home page
moboplayer.com
Use the Medium V6 VFP version on your Xoom.
It plays just about every video format out there.
ya, that made all my divx work and i didnt have to convert anything =D
I hated re-encoding everything to Xoom format until I found MoboPlayer. Sit back and enjoy your movies
Motorola didn't pay to get their tablet "Divx certified", so you have to use third party players to handle avi/mkv files. The only negative about having to use a third party player is that its using the CPU to play the file and will drain the battery at a faster rate than if the Xoom was hardware decoding it.
Does anyone know if the Moboplayer will play MTS files? My Panasonic DMC-ZS3 camera captures 720p movie using the AVCHD (MPEG-4/H.264) format, via AVCHD lite..... The saved file is an MTS file and I'd love to be able to play it natively without re-encoding it........

[Q] lack of video codecs??

i know there is a converter and some people having problems with mkv and i know about h.264 and im starting use my atrix as multimedia i watch some movies in "dvdrip" i doubt since seems quality it lower, i try with an anime dvdrip .mp4 and i cant watch so im wondering wich software i can use to convert in the desire format without lose quality. i have any dvd converter.
so not sure how to convert and what settings. this start annoy me since my n1 play several formats. sorry if this was covered but i didnt find the right solution.
thanks a lot
I would appreciate an answer to this as well.
I have found that the Affix will play most of the .avi movies that I download. I haven't had any luck with the few mp4 or mvk files I've tried.
If anyone knows how to convert any format to something the Atrix can play, please let us know..
Thanks!!

Instead of converting just install a player that can decode all of these files. There are a couple of good ones out there. I've read good things about Meridian and VPlayer.
I try rock player no luck ,i download from youtube the google io in hd 60 fps 1280x720 and .mp4 and surprise I can't play.
My one year old nexus one do fine stupid motorola y try convert with any dvd and was awful the video was so fast not sync with sound,i guess because 60 fps and max van convert its 30 fps any more tips? Thanks

thanks, im pretending use multimedia mode in my TV so will be more to watch on my 42" tv than atrix xD i will try it thanks
The issue is not codecs, it's Tegra 2 cannot handle high profile HD decoding (at least at the moment)
If you stick to Main profile and no B-frames you will likely be ok. Which also means you are likely having to re-encode your video.
More info here
Handbrake preset here
qqplayer works
If you add the video with motorola media link (think that's what its called) it will convert it to play on your phone.

strange dude, my atrix plays all formats, i think that have one, that only comes audio, but this video was 1080p(HD) and i dont made even 1 update in my atrix
it's not that simple.
just because you can play one individual 720p h.264 file doesn't mean you can play them all. there are different profiles / bit rates etc.
For h.264 Tegra 2 supports main profile but not high profile. Xoom owners have done all kinds of tests on this. To date no video player has been able to overcome this.

It does video files too.
Just try a few of your files to get your settings figured out, and after that, it is as easy as dragging your entire 3TB collection onto the program and tap Go to have dvdcat convert them all. It batches them automatically. With a collection that large, it might take a while before its done though.

I know but I will convert my video as I need them. I purchased the app and I tried to convert 5 720P videos to see how it would work. I used the option Xoom HQ2 because I am converting HD files and according to your post it is a faster option. I saved in my SD card and also in my Xoom's internal memory just to see which one would have a better performance.
What's happening is that when I tap on the video to play it looks like it will load but it never does, the video (all of them) would never load. The videos are about 2.3GB in size.
Any ideas of what I should do?

Actually HQ2 is (for 720p files) the profile that provides the best quality.
Based on your description I would suggest to switch video players. My guess is that you have a trial version of Dice Player installed that is expired.
The video files created by DVD Catalyst play great using the stock video player, and while there are quite a few market-players that have hardware support, some of their "plugins" can cause conflicts with the default video playback engine.

Converting itunes tv shows and movies to a readable 7 format?

I've trolled this question hard and can't seem to find a solid answer. Anyone know of a way to convert your purchased itunes movies and shows to a format the Nexus 7 can read? It's easy to turn songs into mp3 from mp4, but having trouble with video. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
As far s I know DRM file protection would not allow for this.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I looked even further and there are some programs that will strip the DRM for you. I do not consider this pirating in any sense because I paid the money for these items.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Try playing the file with MX Player, first. Failing that....
Strip the DRM then use Handbrake to convert video.
Handbrake is the ultimate open-source video converter. Free, of course. Even has an Android preset.
I suggest using the MP4 container, or MKV container, with H.264 encoding. This is pretty standard stuff, and run it with MX Player and MX Player ARMv7 NEON codec pack. Its all Play Store stuff.
Cheers
is is worth buying the pro version of mx player? have to use my 25 dollars on something... also regarding the neon codec pack.. do you need to configure the player to use it or does it pick it up automatically?

Itunes Movie to Nexus 7
All -
First, thank you all very much for all the amazing work you do. I have an old kindle fire and I rooted it using directions from this site. I love it now - it is just like my daughters new Nexus 7.
My issue:
Daughter bought a nexus 7 - she does not want me to root it - so fine. She wants me to get her itunes movies from Mom's mac to her nexus 7.
I've trolled for 2 days all over looking of for a way to do this. I downloaded handbrake on Mom's mac and nothing happened - system crashed actually. Also, when I plugged in Nexus 7 to Mac via USB cord the mac didn't recognize as a device. Strange.
So I will now try to do the same on my Windows laptop - download Handbrake and try to convert movie.
Question: How do you get movie from handshake to nexus 7?
I'm sure it is easy and I feel like an idiot... but after two days I give in and need the experts to help me please.
Much appreciated.
dwayne

I bought this tablet for two things.
I cannot save money.
My girlfriend moved four states away (NY to VA) and I wanted something to do while on the train for 7 hours. I did nothing on it for 14 hours total but watch movies (OTG cable) and play solitaire. It does both awesome!
Screen is great, headphone jack is nice. If the 10" was cheap I would buy one too!
Battery life while watching movies isn't stellar, however nothing is
Best small portable movie player I know of.
Use headphones in a noisy environment - helps the sound a lot.
I am fond of MxPlayer from the app store - plays .avi movies (ripped DVD format) without converting.
I also happen to think it's perfect for watching movies - having used both a phone and Xoom for comparison. I think the 7" form factor is perfect for tablets since you can comfortably hold the thing in one hand.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
Works great for movies, when rooted you can use an OTA cable and stickmount and play off external storage. However, I think external storage taxes the battery a bit more than on-board storage.
Root, stickmount, MXPlayer, VLC, and you're set.
Use dice player. Or mobo player best two video apps on android. On my 16gb ver without ocing I can play 720p h264 flac or aac audio with subs without any issues what so ever with dice player. As 720p h264 with flac or aac is really taxing and you need a high end device and the nexus7 fitted that to the T. smooth frame rate none or extremely little frame skip is not really noticeable at all unless you are looking for it and even if you are its hard to notice.
Best experience with video watching to date for me with android devices. Droid x2 was OK in the video department cause it had the tegra 2 and the dinc2 is just pathetic with its adreno 205. But this nexus7 plays videos much better them my own laptop. And my laptop is not really a pushover either. 380 dedicated vram, 4gb of ram, 1 tb 5400rpm HDD, dual core 1.9ghz turion (sp?). And this thing does the job either the same or little bit better or little bit worse depending on the video file. So far I have 1 video that won't play. But I think it was encoded improperly because only my PC with cccp with mpc can play it with no problems.
But highly recommended. And especially with dice and mobo player it should be hard to find and issues.

I have to add - ES Browser is great for movies on your lan. I have a 500gb drive on my router (always on) with all my movies.
ES Browser sees this storage, and clicking on a movie launches MX Player. All .avi movies. Perfect playback.

It's perfect to watch movies. The colors may not be perfect but the image is pretty sharp. The only disadvantage is that the screen is not very visible outside with sun directly at it. But this is with pretty much everything. It's also very portable and comfy to watch a movie. Specially if you have to hold it in your hand

This is the seventh reply to verify the Nexus 7 is great for watching movies. I use the Dice player for h264 720p HD movies. After the 32GB is full, the Nexus Media Importer App and an OTG cable lets you stream movies from a USB flash drive. No rooting required.
Thanks all I will be picking up a nexus 7 from PC world on Tuesday hopefully.
