i know there is a converter and some people having problems with mkv and i know about h.264 and im starting use my atrix as multimedia i watch some movies in "dvdrip" i doubt since seems quality it lower, i try with an anime dvdrip .mp4 and i cant watch so im wondering wich software i can use to convert in the desire format without lose quality. i have any dvd converter.
so not sure how to convert and what settings. this start annoy me since my n1 play several formats. sorry if this was covered but i didnt find the right solution.
thanks a lot
I would appreciate an answer to this as well.
I have found that the Affix will play most of the .avi movies that I download. I haven't had any luck with the few mp4 or mvk files I've tried.
If anyone knows how to convert any format to something the Atrix can play, please let us know..
Thanks!!

Instead of converting just install a player that can decode all of these files. There are a couple of good ones out there. I've read good things about Meridian and VPlayer.
I try rock player no luck ,i download from youtube the google io in hd 60 fps 1280x720 and .mp4 and surprise I can't play.
My one year old nexus one do fine stupid motorola y try convert with any dvd and was awful the video was so fast not sync with sound,i guess because 60 fps and max van convert its 30 fps any more tips? Thanks

The issue is not codecs, it's Tegra 2 cannot handle high profile HD decoding (at least at the moment)
If you stick to Main profile and no B-frames you will likely be ok. Which also means you are likely having to re-encode your video.
More info here
Handbrake preset here
qqplayer works
If you add the video with motorola media link (think that's what its called) it will convert it to play on your phone.

strange dude, my atrix plays all formats, i think that have one, that only comes audio, but this video was 1080p(HD) and i dont made even 1 update in my atrix
it's not that simple.
just because you can play one individual 720p h.264 file doesn't mean you can play them all. there are different profiles / bit rates etc.
For h.264 Tegra 2 supports main profile but not high profile. Xoom owners have done all kinds of tests on this. To date no video player has been able to overcome this.

This may sound completely stupid, but how do you play video on your xoom? I mean there isn't even a dedicated video app. How the hell do you release a tablet and expect it to compete with the I pad without a native video player or support for most video formats? I just transferred a couple of avi files that don't show up anywhere because there's no app to play them.

Ya i just tried a couple of files i had already converted for my moms ipad. a couple were DVDrips and those played pretty much fine using rocklayer. But one was a converted 1080p music video. The music video played fairly well but there was a noticeable difference in the frame rate from the standard def videos.it wasnt at all choppy but it wasnt as fluid as i would have liked. If this is what im going to have to expect from HD video then im definitely not sold on this tab.

You can use Handbrake, a free video encoding program. I found that redoing h.264 high profile to h.264 main profile(see the link) and dropping motion estimation method to diamond, Subpixel ME & Mode Decision to 0, and avg bitrate to 4000 kbps makes for a lower encode time(20ish minutes for 1 hour on my i7 920 win 7 64bit). Excellent quality too vs original.
I'm attempting to convert a 720p copy of inception using handbrake right now. (6 hrs estimated time) what a pain in the ass. I set it to the APPLE preset. Which I'm hoping/assuming is what one would use for the ipad. Ill let you guys know how it turns out. If it does work won't be so bad as I can just set a bunch of files to convert in queue while i sleep.

Iceytea posted a handbrake preset for Xoom. I am trying it now and it is going much faster. 2 hour 720p movie took me 1 hour estimated with Apple universal preset and with this one 45 minutes. Can't comment on quality yet as it is still converting.

That is still quite compressed.... Regular 1080p mkv's are anywhere from 10gb to nearly 50gb.
A 6gb 1080p rip is still probably very good quality.

Yeah right.. A 45 minute 720p TV show is just over 1GB, a 720p bluray movie comes out to about 2 - 4GB, 1080p is double that.
Even DVD rips of full length movies are bigger than 500mb if you want quality.
I'm not sure if this is on topics, but I download 720p anime mkv(most common format) and it's playback is very choppy on galaxy tab, and I've tried stock video player, mvideoplayer, and mobo player. I have to spent time re encode those files with handbrake or ripbot to make it plays properly. but the exact same file play fine on my galaxy s phone without any conversion.
anyone know what's the problem?and ideas how I can fix it? the goal is to just copy my downloaded anime to galaxy tab and play it smoothly, not spending extra time to re-encode it again.

I hope your talking about 70mb SD encodes cause 70mb 720p would give you major eye cancer .
I dont think its the file size its probably the way the file has been encoded down to 70mb thats the problem. Since i have not had a problem playing anime i would watch on my pc.
I have just watched [Coalgirls]_Shiki_01_(1280x720_Blu-Ray_FLAC)_[5B75CA00] (430mb)(bitrate : 1600 kbps) with no problems. No lag in audio or subtitles and video was like 95% smooth, only the occasional jerk for a second when panning. Try a normal sd encode @ like 200ish mb.
I also had no problem playing The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya NCED theme (Hare Hare Yukai) SD video with karaoke soft-sub from here in the test videos part. Which is 30mb & bitrate: 3400 kbps.
My phone is rooted and bloat removed dont know if that helps....?
No man i got mine from minitheatre.org some small awesome anime encodes i thnk ur right that a few big ones play well i noticed sd ones work perfect its only hd ones i have trouble with them i use MX player ill test ur file to see if its working an all. Also I love bleach so put many bleach eps which i rewatch bout 100 times a day lolz on ma xperia play to but in 480p.

Dice Player... best video player so far. I've been playing with it for a couple of days and it plays 720p well. I've jacked my CPU up to 1.6ghz and Dice is handling 720 downloaded mkvs which is exactly what every other player can't do. (It still works without overclocking but I tried a 6.5GB movie at 1ghz and it was jumpy, TV shows were fine though).
It's not got the prettiest GUI and OK, it's not the most stable, it just stops playing the video sometimes and even force closing the app doesn't get it playing again, you have to reboot... which isn't the most convenient but hey, at least I don't have to spend hours converting mkvs to mp4s!
I haven't tried any 1080 vids because I don't have any and I'm not downloading an 8GB file just to try it.
I've just bought the full version (you get a free 3 day trial to test it out). I am hoping that with my hard earned $3.95 the dev will be able to make it even better.
Try the 3 day trial, seriously.

thats quite contradicting. Have you tried MX Videplayer? It too can plany 720p mkv vids with no issues. and it doesnt have any of the problems you mentioned about. Check out MX and let me know if you still feel the Dice is superior.
The thing that always makes me go "wtf?" is why people would WANT to play high profile 720p or 1080p video on their Xooms.
It'd kind of trash your battery, even if you could get it to work software-wise.
Much better to handbrake to a format where the GPU can do all the heavy lifting.
I tested it for 3 days and ended up buying. It plays 720 mkv files better than MX Player. I convert movies with Handbrake but don't want to take the time with TV shows. It's nice to just move them over the wifis with File Manager HD and watch them when I can.
What I like best about Dice is that it can play everything. I don't like switching players for formats. All the old wmv from when my son was born play fine, avi, etc.
The dev is pretty active in the Transformer forum. Seems like they try hard to make the player better.
Dice and Mizzu Movies make a nice combo.

Just tried MX Player - it's not playing the files that Dice is. It's playing Entourage at 720 but very jumpy and no sound and it's just force closing when trying to play Ironclad or Platoon 720 mkvs. Basically the same results as Mobo player.
Also, don't care about battery, I'm using the Xoom mostly on 1hr long train journeys to and from work. I just want to be able to download a TV ep in the morning, transfer it to the Xoom and go. I can do that now without messing about re-encoding them with Handbrake/Badaboom etc.

Most? I wouldn't say so. If you're downloading 720p content, chances are it's high profile and in those cases the video players you mentioned won't play it. Dice Player is the only one that's played everything I've thrown at it.

I figure if it's something I'm going to use every day and it helps towards the development of an even better app, 4 bucks isn't a lot of money.
I'd much rather pay that and know it's going towards a quality product than mess around with re-encoding.
Well, it is the better mkv hd 720p player. But it is not perfect yet. Some 720p movies don't play. And 1080p don't play too. But I recommend, because play smooth many tittles.
Hey now this is GOOD NEWS!

What always happens when I played them they fastforwarded by itself but with the MX player you have the option to play via H/S or S/H meaning play with software or playing with hardware software.
So you simple set to (surprisingly S/H) you can now play those HD files that are 720p and also hear the sound and in sync and everything, before I had to use handbrake and wait for 7 hours to decode a movie from 720 HD Mp4 TO 720 HD Mp4 (weird) using xoom setting wit Handbrake.
Now I can watch HD movies on my tab finally without conversion!
Next step MKV files! Can be seen excellent on Mobo player but without sound and with VLplayer you can hear sound and see the image but the video stutters all the time.
Give it up to our developers/modders! That managed to fix one CRUCIAL AND COMMERCIAL function!
Cheers!
07/08/2011 Edit: MX Video Player got an update and can now play MKV with new feature setting S/W Decoder (fast mode) and High Definition 720p mkv's can now be played with little or no lag! Awesome!
Really? Nobody happy?
High profile which level? Moboplayer always work fine for me even better on galaxy based rom
I'll test mxplayer when back to home
Sent from my Xperia Arc using XDA App
you can actually play 720p Hp with dice player. though u are restricted by the file size. andof course u have to pay for it though. it's lag free with sound sync.

Sorry, did I miss something? Did you post something or are you just happy it's playing well?
