Ok, is this *normal* that one by one the devs (jac, kk, sombionix and the rest of tw, and now - eugene373) proclaimed, effectively, that are abandoning (at least to a certain degree) xda? Their personal conflicts (which are unlikely our business) aside, is there anything else that feeds this tendency? In particular, are the xda modes doing enough (or anything at all?) to diffuse and perhaps reverse the trend? Or am I wrong to assume that this would be their business? I witnessed that 90% of (sane) xda members are being as supportive as ever to devs. There are, of course, the challenged ones, but it's the internet. So I don't see anything that regular (sane) members did wrong. And yet the facts are... disturbing.
P.S. Oh, and, after a week of admiring 'wannaby modes' nonsense here, do you mind not telling me that this thread doesn't belong to general or is off-topic? The point of this is to discuss if anything can be done to prevent that many see as an unfortunate trend in *vibrant* section.
I don't know about JAC or KK, because they are the older developers who works on the I9000 model before I even get a chance to visit XDA.
I believe that Team Whiskey moved out because they want to have their own support forum, with dedicated Donator Section for their supporters. Also to provide more ROM specific support for their ROMS.
As for Eugene, I am not too sure, but it may be due to people no respecting his work?
P.S. When did Eugene said that he is 'leaving' XDA?
He never said this. But he explicitly said that he is abandoning specific xda threads (which is, obviously, his full right) and will be posting only on his site.
i can understand this. Its starting to turn into a business, if they want to post their work that they put time into on their own website, that is their full right, and it makes sense. And it shouldnt be that big of a deal, its not that hard to make an account on either of their websites to gain access to their forums. So if they want to make their ROM's a little more private, then i give permission haha
While it's unfortunate, it seems pretty necessary to me. It's impossible to continue to have all discussion on a particular ROM in a single thread. It makes it much harder to find bug reports, for example. So having your own forum and website dedicated to your own ROM makes sense.
Just because they're leaving XDA doesn't mean they're gonna stop coding. And all of the devs know quite well that XDA is the best place to inform people about their ROMs.
Oh well I hope team whiskey makes a mobile app for theyre site
Still flashing , thanks to odin
Just for your knowledge..
KK was banned
JAC well know one knows
But just because most of us are opening our own sites doesnt mean we are going to jump away from XDA.
XDA is a great way to get our names out there..
Our personal sites are just so you guys have all our work in one location & can ask more questions or request features there. (Or that is was I do)
Keeping it classy, o yeah.
XDA is the hub... their sites are the gold mines.
Keep supporting the developers as much as you can, and that Vibrant is going to always be in tip-top form.

I try to keep the Wiki updated with information. Although it is not mine to house hold so if anyone else want to add their 2 cents to the wiki please do so. Eugene just want to post his stuff in his forum for what the other people mentioned. Which is his full right. And is still going to keep tabs on XDA as it is a good place to get together.

Ok, so maybe the xda mods need to show a bit more flexibility to better accommodate devs needs? Check either TW or Eugene's forums. Essentially, they replicate (nearly 1:1) the structure of xda vibrant sections. I understand that devs want more control over their threads and better organization. But it seems to me that it wouldn’t be that hard to implement the same right here:
A) create a separate sticky for each developer’s project
B) give devs certain mod rights within their threads
Again, I am certainly not against personal web sites, etc. And in no way am I trying to critisize the devs here (obviously it's their right to do whatever they feel like doing!). I am just trying to understand if xda is adopting to the situation. Maybe some small changes at xda can help to prevent the further devs fragmentation. I think nobody would want to see xda becoming just a hub for links to personal sites. Discussion, exchange of ideas, healthy competition (ok, this one may need to be put on hold for a while), comparative reviews like the one that swehes is doing are SO MUCH better when devs are actively participating.
EDIT: Actually, I suspect that if devs had a right to edit their own threads, some (if not most) conflicts would have never become public at the first place.
EDIT, 12/12/10:
It looks like there is a ton of desire here and drive to get some major work accomplished. I just spoke with ferman via PM regarding the future of this project. I wanted to throw the idea out there, and I want to be a part of it, but I am (obviously) in no way equipped to lead such an effort. As I told him, I am much more the monkey-behind-the-keyboard writing code than the project manager at this point, and would happily contribute to any group that desires to further the Captivate's development.
So, without further ado, I hand the reins over to ferman and anyone else that congeals together as communal guidance. I'll be happy just to contribute code.
I thank everyone for their patience while I haven't been here to answer anyone's questions or even acknowledge everyone's involvement. Once I am done with release season at work, I only hope there's still room on the team for another monkey behind a keyboard!
I struggled with whether to post this in "General" or "Development" - I settled on "Development" as it is regarding, well...development.
If enough people are interested, I'd like to start the group development of a ROM, tentatively named "QAM". Cornerstones of QAM? No donations accepted, except for git submissions ("Free and In the Clear" - get it?); group development with specialization based on the team members' skill sets; widely accesible code with an emphasis on sound open source development practices; and clearly documented, well tested changes and updates.
With all of the drama here recently, especially regarding Axura, I think it's time that some of us try to steer this place back to what it used to be.
I'm an enterprise dev in my nine to five. As many have voiced, I have no doubts about my ability to develop a nice ROM for my own personal use. But I value my time, recognize that I am not as efficient in some areas (UI and UX, for instance), and understand from my professional life how much better of a result can be achieved when you've got a diversified team developing together.
Anyone that is a fan of Agile Development Practices will know where I am coming from. If anyone is interested in working together, let's start a dialogue here and now. If you're merely interested in flaming and thread crapping, move along - this isn't the thread you're looking for.
[EDIT - 12/06/10, 8:51PM] Posted an update within the thread. I didn't anticipate this much interest, but I'm glad it's there. I'm going to go through the thread tonight and start assembling names, etc.
i'm interested, but i dont really have any skills in relation to creating a rom or anything of the like. but if can help let me know!

Sounds interesting. I'm interested in at least testing for you guys. I'd love to start coding for Android (BSc in Computer Science, but enjoy coding every once in a blue moon), but never got around to learning. I'll def keep my eye on this thread though, and help where I can
@OP:
Think this is an amazing idea! Definitely can see a lot come from this.
Idea though: you should maybe put up some slots to be filled so we can get some development teams, focused on their own individual part of the rom, together, so we know for sure that this will be great.
The most I can help with is being the app-writer-assistant XD.
I have yet to see a rom with its own app(s)(not counting DG's lbs launch) and I would love to see one with its own music player, notes, messaging, etc. I'm not experienced at all, i just know some java and I'm still learning android developtment(i got 3 big books next to me right now).
In fact I wouldn't be offended at all if you just say "no, thank you". I just really like the idea and I thought that if i proposed this it would at least give some initiative to develop custom apps with the custom roms and make this project that much more...unique
i'd like to see and participate in some REAL developement. A lot of these "devs" (especially the ones complaining) arent doing much developement and instead are just piecing together different things REAL devs have created into these roms and then trying to extort "donations" out of people. There's a select few developers frontlining the kernel developement that are doing real, good work.
imagine if we had multiple people creating roms like cyanogenmod on here...
I would be interested. I have done some android programming as well as some Other stuff. Never did any rom development but would like to give it a shot

This is exactly the sort of thing this thread and concept will help avoid. The Rom builders that are causing drama do alot of work. And we all benefit. Even if they are getting more traffic and donations than the ones doing the kernel and other mods and making them available for the Rom and kernel builders.
I don't mind seeing a little competition in the thread titles. And each dev has an opinion as to what's best and thus we have several different roms. But the bickering I've seen is ridiculous. But understandable. There are no rules in place. No required donation. No licensing on much of what's up. Its a bit of a mess.
Id love to see what a captivate oriented community effort will produce. Team whisky is great but not all that works on the vibrant works on the captivate.

Please stop derailing development threads, it really is getting out of hand. Instead of letting moderators step in, how about policing ourselves? If you don't have anything good to say, then don't say anything. If you take ownership to the matter, then settle it in private channels. This is only hindering people learning the inner workings of android and roms.
If one person creates rom A, built from source (obviously referring to aosp roms). Chances are rom A is using work done by other individuals in the community to achieve a certain goal. This is called an Open Source Community. So rom B comes in and uses A as a base. This is great, because I've found that when this occurs, bugs get squashed much quicker. No matter the skills of the user/developer, they have the ability to find some of the smallest issues that cause the biggest bugs. Even if rom B only has little things like the wifi scan interval changed, or added/subtracted APK's. The only thing necessary here, is a little bit of credit and submitting/notifying the original author of bug fixes and/or enhancements. When this occurs, there is no "he did this" "he got this working first" bull. I could go on forever on proper etiquette, but that's not my point. Let's let everyone do their thing, and if there is a real issue that needs to be addressed, handle it in a classy manner.
Thanks for your time, and i apologize in advance to moderators if this thread gets out of hand, feel free to remove it.
Well said, now if people will only start holding back their words.
Sounds good. Credit where credit is due. No one develops completely on their own (for the most part). Even the CM branch is a "team". When knowledgeable people work together (and acknowledge the source of their work) we all win, and the builds get better.
This model benefits all.
I know, as the user of a now ancient device, I would love to see development NOT come to a halt, or be pushed off to the unfindable fringes.

Thanks to everybody out there who participates and believes in these principles, and I look forward to your future endeavours.

Well said, Drew! Awesome
Yup Yup. Btw I agree with what you said in the other thread about not completely agreeing with the xda rule in regards to having to gain permission to use peoples work. Only thing that should be req is proper notation in the OP that its being used and that's it. Imho.
It gets real sad around here when people fight over work and even more so when they do so in public channels. Happened in the 3D section awhile ago and was redic.
If you did something and you don't see credit in an OP for it It's simple, PM the user to discuss it and if that doesn't work PM a mod to help mediate the dispute. NEVER should it be discussed in public threads!

Well written Mr Drew. I wouldn't worry about those who mess things for everyone else, they surely have nothing better to do.
Keep up the solid work.
Thanks.
That was perfect. Not only are you a tremendous developer, but a very wise person as well. Thank you for taking the time out to write this up. And thank you and everyone else for sharing your/their knowledge.
It would be really nice if there was a list where everything that's gotten done/fixed giving credit to that particular person. Or perhaps when you work off of someone else's work, you bring all of the credits with you. That way as it moves along the credits will stay with that particular version of rom.
By the way, preview7 is running great.
Thanks again,

Let's not forget about donating to the devs of which you use their hard work. Yes this stuff is free, but hours and hours go into the smallest things sometimes. Even if everyone donated 1 dollar to the dev(s)of the Rom or whatever you use, you're still making a difference. Let's show each other some respect here. Not just to other devs, but to other users also
I wrote this in the other thread but it applies here too. A huge thanks to all who are truly interested in moving forward and improving the Evo experience. And +1 on donating to the devs, all of the devs.

Well, everyone should just place nice in the sand box, end of story. Development will get back on it's steady crawl.
Hey guys,
The rules are rules and indeed, they have been getting heavily enforced in here of late, in regards to the whole 'pay for a pre-release full feature Rom' of Monx and iHackers.
Alright, so you need to donate to get the latest version of the ROM? I'll hold my hand up and say I've never done that, nor do I care, once xposed is on top of a stock rom with a few preinstalled performance mods, I'm happy. I find most 'contributor' versions to have trivial features I am personally happy to live without until they are fully tested anyway.
As it stands at the moment, at least with my 2 LB roms of choice, one has stopped developing his ROM and the other has the thread locked.
This post will possibly get locked, deleted, I'll be warned or banned, but frankly. Heavy handed tactics from some of the mods are KILLING the development of the Z1.

I thought XDA mods did pretty well. Why would you donate to receive a beta version of the rom? Put it this way, you PAID to TEST beta work from the developer. Be it whatever amount of the donation is. Infact, frankly speaking, at this point the meaning "donate" and "purchasing" does not make any difference at all. That goes without saying that the rom isn't own by them, they just tweaked and add little features over the roms, however the source is ultimately belongs to sony.
When you donate to get a rom/features (or whatsoever you called it) is like defeating the purpose of open-source. As we all know, Android is open-source, if you have tweak or something better than the original source, its a given that you should share to benefit everyone. Again, donate should come from the will of the donator, if you get what I mean.
Trust me, if you donate to "some" developer, when a new flagship comes out, with your money they will purchase the product and as a result, you will still lose a developer. Of course, I'm not discouraging donation, some developer truly deserve a drink or more. Ultimately, the money is yours, decide whatever you decide to do with it.
Handle with grace? As far as I remember, the mod did hit a warning note to the developer. Isn't that sufficient?
No offense, had to let it out.
Summon @eagleeyetom for your concern.
Exactly guys...
I'm very sorry to hear they are stopping developing and if I started that avalanche - I'm fine with that.
I'm here for a quite long time, I'm working for community but there's many guys who worked and are working ten times better, faster and more than me and they never asked for a cent.
Whole purpose of open source is to share.
It's ridiculous to charge money for something that's free or just tweaked.
I mean we built PAC for XS and never asked for a money and that was compiled from a CM source, it wasn't stock ROM with a MODs...
Don't get me wrong, I found ihackers to be very good ROM but this is XDA, not playstore or any store...
If they don't want to develop and work without money, then we don't need them.
We have plenty developer who are willing to work without price tag on their ROMs or MODs...
NUT is here, krab is here, niaboc will soon be here...
We have great THEMErs and MODers here and we will survive
I just don't give a damm for that one who only came here to get our money...

Lets say it was allowed to happen all over XDA.
It won't be long before the best features are reserved for those that pay.
Plus you'd get less quality and more crap because you'll get these little twats dishing out crap so that they can collect.
Now pretend that you had to pay $20 for xposed and $10 for every module that you use for it.
Would you be more or less happy than you are now?
And I don't know what you've been smoking, but the real development is only just beginning now that:
1. the broken camera is fixed after unlocking the bootloader and
2. full rw access to system works on 4.3 - thanks to @[NUT] , somebody who did alot of the epic development which paved the way for those roms you like so much.
It's not like that. Our purpose is not exiling or banning or whatever you call it the developers. Our decision wasn't taken lightly as without developers XDA would become yet another forum to talk about cats and ponies and we don't like it. Developers are the heart and soul of this site, but they have been given rules to follow and code of conduct, so it's more like bending them to get money. XDA gives a lot of options to show the appreciation (PayPal, BitCoin etc.) but paying to get early access is a no go and that was a main reason of closing these threads as you could all read in the closing message.
My Opinion is Dev's should not ask Money for ROMs.. donation is not a problem, but I saw some devs releasing a firmware for Money. If somebody pay him, he will give the link to user to download. So i say a forum like xda-developers must ban those f****** devs. i agree with Mods, they doing is rite.

Mate, when you talking about someone or mentioning someone, tag him so he could reply to you.
I won't repeat same things over and over again - ask moderators who reported ihackers for not playing by the rules.
Ask those guys how many XDA users reported monx for same thing.
Nobody force them to stop developing, they decided they don't want to do that if they can't charge money for beta or what they called that - contributors version.
It's not mine rules, it's XDA rules.
@Nut never did such a stupid thing and he get enough donations to buy Z1 and be able to continue his work.
So please, don't blame me because someone else behaves like a little child...
As I said million times before - I found ihackers ROM great piece of software, same like monx ROM but when bunch of users report rules violation - something, obviously, isn't right
Some of us are a bit longer here and we are trying to help, not to force devs to quit.

Yes sir! That is so. Also to name other devs like Kali- from fxp RaymanFX (ok, he's on xperia S, but he did a very good job and he says many times, that he don't want donations). And when a dev do a good job, he will get donations from users who really appreciate their work.

Please don't think otherwise and please show some love and respect for your fellow members and moderator/administrators here at XDA. They all do their very best to make the site enjoyable for everyone. Sometimes simple mistakes are made by moderators as well as members including myself. I was in violation of a couple of XDA rules and was informed of this so i made the appropriate changes and also requested the thread be cleaned up as well as time allowed for me to make these changes to my OP and upload a new rom soon. So please check back from time to time and get ready for version 2.2. There's a lot I have to do but I want to bring something awesome that will appeal to as many people as possible.
I really really want to stress that the relationship between dev's, members and administration/moderators is something that XDA takes seriously and I have witnessed this first hand for quite some time. Please be willing to overlook mistakes and inconsistencies from others and not be too quick to judge and make posts that you will regret. We all have done this but we can all work together and make efforts to keep making XDA an awesome & pleasant experience by being as respectful and curteous as possible, even when we might disagree with decisions/actions of others, including XDA staff.
Thanks for reading! Now let's sit back and take a few moments to appreciate all the good things we have in life and not dwell on negative things. That's not how I roll!!!!
