[Q] Upside down screen rotation problem - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm sorry if there already is post about this problem, but i couldn't find anything useful so i decided to ask for myself.
The other day i bought a second hand i9505, the problem is that the screen rotates upside down. When i start any app and turn the phone sideways the screen rotates exactly 180 degrees from what it's supposed to be, which is very annoying when watching a youtube clip or taking a photo. The phone was on stock 4.4, at first i thought it was a callibration problem so i installed a stock 4.2.2, but no luck. Then i installed slimrom but still no go, tried different kernels (like 4 or 5) and still nothing.
So my question is is there any way to fix this without taking it to the shop? Like a patch or an app to fix it, and how can i see the values of the gyroscope to see if it is outputting what it's supposed to ?

As you have tried several different ROM's, presumably the error is hardware related. As you bought it as second hand, I'd bet that it was reason of sale (mechanically caused sensor(s) damages are not covered by warranty).
sorry that I could not provide more optimistic assessment.

I figured as much, but thanks anyway. So there is no app to flip the rotation ( invert it so that it is normal ) ?

Video of Hermes problems... please watch and let me know your opinion?

Hey all,
I've read these forums, and am 90% sure I have a defective Hermes. However, I'm unsure, as these forum posts were just text, and therefore can't really accurately describe the problems being seen. So, I made a YouTube video showing a couple of my issues, especially the screen fading to white. Like I say, I'd just like confirmation, and I'd like this post and video to serve as a help to others who are wondering if they have the same problem. You know what they say, a picture is worth a 1000 words .
Here are more details of my problems, in no particular order:
o The buttons reset after a quick power off and on (not a reset).
o The screen fade problem resets itself after a quick power off and on (not a reset).
o The screen calibration issue (not shown in video) seems to last a little longer sometimes. The issue is that calibration gets a little off. It seems to be by 10-20 pixels, but I can't repeat this as readily as the screen fade.
o This has happened with and without a memory card inserted.
o I've tried two different batteries, with the same results.
o I've tried three different firmwares (original, WM5 update, WM6 Black 2.0).
o The battery quick powerdown issue has only happened to me once (battery drains 10% every minute).
Here's the link to the video. It's only 84 seconds, so take a peek!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQWqTkoMX_4
Let me (and others) know your thoughts. It'd be appreciated.
PS... about the screen calibration...
FYI, I know about the screen calibration issues some have had wth the Hermes. However, I don't think this is that problem, since I never, ever have to recalibrate my phone. It always corrects itself eventually.

This has been documented HEAVILY in the wiki and the forums so I wont answer that.
The rest seems VERY weird indeed especially the screen going white?!?!
Is it still in warranty because I would so send it to be repaired.
Not seen anything like that on any forum. Are you keeping it somewhere hot or near an e.m. field just before use?
What additional apps have you installed? Do these problems still occur with an "empty" phone (i.e. right after a hard reset before installing third party apps)? If so then that should rule out software and firmware (ROM).
Fade to white issue: hardware problem IMO
Buttons stop working issue: looks like software IMO

I agree, the screen going white is similar to when I had my O2 XDA EXEC (HTC Universal) in which whenever I moved the lcd into the mini laptop mode the screen would fade to pure white. When I sent it into PPC Tech they notified me saying in which the lcd cable was damaged itself. Im not sure if thats the case with you necesarily, since it seems the screen goes back to normal after powering the device to standby and back.
The keys are most likely software/rom issues. Perhaps maybe you should reflash to a recent rom and see what happens. Although if that doesnt work I suggest you send in for replacement or warranty. I neeever in the 6 months I had my phone did I ever have problems like the one you've listed.
::EDIT::
I just realized I saw that you tried multiple roms, if thats the case I realllly believe you have a defective phone. It does happen that one in a hundred tend to go bad..
Had similar occurance when mine had gotten damp.
fading screen and hardware buttons
Hi,
I've reported some time ago these issues, they started with LVSW Edition (2007-03-20) and after that Pro - BLACK 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and still with 3.01.
I don't think is hardware related. i happens in random way. No specific apps or time or connection.
I've had similar issues with the buttons not working on my 8525. It seems to have to do with changing in and out of landscape mode. For example, I'll always have problems if I reset the phone and leave it in landscape mode and I always have to push the keyboard in and pull it back out to get everything working right.
If the buttons DO work, they are usually wrong, like up and down will instead move left to right. Again, pushing in and pulling out the keyboard fixes it for me. I recently upgraded to a new ROM and couldn't say if the problem persists or not.
As for the white screen issue - I'd say it's FUBAR'd.

unable to unlock screen "screen totally unresponsive"

HI Everyone
my dell streak screen has totally gone unresponsive,i cant even slide to unlock it ,ive tried factory reset & reloading stock froyo 2.2 & still nothing .up untill yesterday it was fine till it just rebooted on its own now nothing
i have not dropped it ,have dells case for it ,its a o2 stock rom but no more
im now gutted ,& not sure what to do .
any help or any suggestions greatly appreicated
the answers you are looking for can be found on the forums HERE, HERE, and HERE
people have tried screen recalibrations and it seems to work, others have said its because of static and simply removing the static by swiping the entire screen with your palm fixes it
if that was the case i would except it but nothing works no static no washing of hands or no calibration fixes the problem, ive tried all resets &recalibrations the screen is dead to any movement
Thanks for the feedback here but my Dell Streak screen had died, unable to fix so as being under warranty o2 replaced it.
So now a Happy Streaker again
I have had that issue a few times too.I think it is because the pockets kinda squeeze the device a little bit,to me the solution is...put the device in your front pocket with the screen facing the outside. When mine faces my legs and I sit down after I stand up I come across this issue.
Dell you should know better.
Actually for me none of those suggestions work (even thought that was the way). I can make the screen freeze by charging it with the AC adapter. However usb charging doesn't freeze it.
No fix for now?
all i did was recalibrate the screen and havent had any problem since
Another cause: camera is running
At least on one device, the running camera seems to interfere with the unlock screen. If the above fixes didn't do it for you, have a look at this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13604352
Quick test: cover the camera / light sensor (or put phone down flat), then try the unlock again and see if that does it.
Please post your results at thread above (would be good to know if that fix is specific to IDEOS X5).
Alternative solution: camera running in background

Sorry if it appears a stupid question. But how do you go about recalibrating the screen on my streak.

[Q] Turn off faulty sensor?

Hi, just bought a cheap iconia a500 with a dent on one corner so obviously been dropped. It works fine however.
Only issue is one of the sensors seems faulty. I installed a custom rom and still same so not the rom at fault.
I only noticed it after installing words with friends. You can shake to shuffle tiles but mine just shuffles em continuously unless turned upside down. Not sure which sensor which sensor it is as rotate works fine.
I guess the drop caused it but is there a way of turning it off?
Anyone?
I can imagine it would have an impact on battery life also.

Dude, you have posted this multiple times. You can't turn off the gyro. Sorry to say, you have to live with it, and forget about Words with Friends.
I posted it once before in the wrong section so posted it here. I would delete the other post if I had the option like other forums but alas I can't.
I can live with it actually especially at £40 and an answer to my question was all I wanted not an arsey comment dude.
No one told me it can't be switched off and I could find that answer nowhere after a long search of the forums, hence why I asked

Dropped N7, screen no longer rotates

Hi all
I accidentally dropped my Nexus 7 (32GB, WiFi) and the screen not longer rotates. All the autorotate settings are correct. I checked GPS Status and all the readings are out. I also got SensorTester and the orientation sensors are definitely out of whack. So, I'm guessing the sensors got disrupted in the fall. I tried recalibrating using both apps with no luck.
I've seen threads about doing a hard reset, but I'm not sure how that would work, particularly since I suspect it's a hardware problem. Unless the sensors are somehow software dependent? Is there something I can do to fix this, or would I have to send it in for repairs?
I'm running stock 4.2.2
Thanks!

You broke the sensor but just be glad that's all you broke. You could have easily broken the screen.
I've looked but can't seem to find a replacement for the sensor. But you'd probably need to be very handy with tiny soldering jobs to fix it even if you could find the part.
Are you known with rooting etc?
If so there are some ways to flash the stock ROM
I would not say its broken immediately, because when I dropped my iPod touch the iOS just went crazy and didn't boot anymore, but all was fixed after a reset...

I know! I hadn't realised the N7s were so prone to screen shattering and dislodged digitisers before I started looking for solutions to my problem. I'll be a lot more careful from now on lol. Fortunately everything else is working, although the GPS stopped working for a while.

I've been toying around with the idea of rooting it for a while now. Haven't really had any need/want to. Until now. I'll give it a try when I have the chance.
Thanks for the advice

[Q](cm11) phone app freezes, screen becomes unresponsive

Hi all,
Im at a loss here, I dont know how to move forward with this problem so im asking for help lol XD.
I just gave my nexus 4 to my gf ( just got my opo last week). The phone was running cyanogen mod 11 ( some nightly version between m6 and m7).
So when my phone came in the mail, I dropped her sim in my nexus 4 (witch was working perfectly) and after making a phone call with it, she tells me she thinks the phone app is broken or something...
So I have a look at it and this is what its doing now. When I call someone, as soon as you click call the screen goes black. To bring back the screen you need to click twice on the sleep/wake button on the side ( kinda like if you were closing the phone and re-opening it) just for the screen to show again but none of the buttons work. Well none of the phone app buttons work, I can still click back/home/previous app buttons or slide down the top menu just fine. just cant click any of the number keys, hang up, hit speaker phone or anything related to the phone app. So in order to hang up I have to click home and then use the drop down menu and click hang up under the phone notification.
Before droping her sim card in the phone I did a standard wipe/factory reset on the phone just to give her a clean platform. So since that was already done I've tried updating to a stable ( M9 in this case) release, problem is still there, so I tried to wipe dalvik, cache and done a data wipe/factory reset from the CWM recovery and flashed a fresh cm 11 M9 with gapps and I still have the problem.
Im at a loss at where to begin looking for a fix for this situation, I've looked on the xda and cm forums and ran plenty of google searches for this problem but im coming up empty ...
any help would be greatly appreciated,
regards
Chris
Edit: omg screen protector was interfering with the proximity sensor... Is this a common problem with nexus 4 or could this provblem still be related to my hardware/software ?
(I've never used a screen protector before).

If the screen protector isn't applied carefully, it might interfere easily with the sensors. If you want to check, then download a sensor tester from the play store, and use it to see if the sensor is working without any protector over it.

haha thanks for your reply, I've been trying to solve this issue for a week, been looking on the cm nightly and stable forums and here on xda trough all the posts that sounded closely related to my problem and didn't find anything... as soon as I post a questions 3 minutes later I found the problem.
To test it, I simply peeled the screen protector off and held it there while I made a call and it worked perfectly !! Then I cut out the part that goes over the prox sensor and its perfect again ( looks like crap but works ). Still gonna download that sensor tester ( curiosity XD).
P.S: totally unrelated to this post, I've been reading some of your "how to" posts here on xda, just wanted to say thanks for all the info you have put out there XD.

Hehe No problem
This happened with my co-worker's Nexus 4 (which is now my Nexus 4). She had been complaining about this for like a month, until I actually saw her screen, and that the corner of her screen protector had flapped loose and had a bunch of crud built up underneath it. It was a forehead smacker for me when I realized how obvious the cause/solution was. Not so obvious when I took possession and replaced the screen and had the same problem.
