Dropped N7, screen no longer rotates - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
I accidentally dropped my Nexus 7 (32GB, WiFi) and the screen not longer rotates. All the autorotate settings are correct. I checked GPS Status and all the readings are out. I also got SensorTester and the orientation sensors are definitely out of whack. So, I'm guessing the sensors got disrupted in the fall. I tried recalibrating using both apps with no luck.
I've seen threads about doing a hard reset, but I'm not sure how that would work, particularly since I suspect it's a hardware problem. Unless the sensors are somehow software dependent? Is there something I can do to fix this, or would I have to send it in for repairs?
I'm running stock 4.2.2
Thanks!

You broke the sensor but just be glad that's all you broke. You could have easily broken the screen.
I've looked but can't seem to find a replacement for the sensor. But you'd probably need to be very handy with tiny soldering jobs to fix it even if you could find the part.

Are you known with rooting etc?
If so there are some ways to flash the stock ROM
I would not say its broken immediately, because when I dropped my iPod touch the iOS just went crazy and didn't boot anymore, but all was fixed after a reset...

I know! I hadn't realised the N7s were so prone to screen shattering and dislodged digitisers before I started looking for solutions to my problem. I'll be a lot more careful from now on lol. Fortunately everything else is working, although the GPS stopped working for a while.

I've been toying around with the idea of rooting it for a while now. Haven't really had any need/want to. Until now. I'll give it a try when I have the chance.
Thanks for the advice

Have to Align Screen again and again - it Annoys me

Hey i don't know what happened to my Wizard but suddenly after installing two Alarm Clock softwares i just started losing my Screen Alignment. To fix it i even tried re flashing my Wizard but this time the problem started early and without installing those programs. Did anyone of you have the same problem?? If you do have a patch do post it in reply. Cause after using the ROM I'm using now all the other ROMs seem to be too Slow.
NOTE: Information about my Wizard is updated and in my signature.
Thanks in Advance.
HI,
Have you ckecked the connection between the screen and the print? Maybe it has a bed contact?
If you still have warranty, the you better send your phone back to let it repair
good luck

Hey im sure that there are no problem with the HARDWARE cause if there were problems with the hardware then it should not even work after i align screen and secondly if you know any ROM faster than mine (mentioned in my sign) cause when i switch to nayother ROM they seem to be too slow.

Well there's your problem right there. Anyone that sure of anything can't be right about it.
Seriously though. This sounds like an intermittent fault, and that is the domain of hardware failures. This kind of thing happens when hardware ages. Especially around things with moving parts. That slide-out keyboard wreaks havoc on the ribbon over time, and eventually, they just give out. You may have one that's merely loose, or it may be getting ready to break, or it may already be broken and just touching often enough to make you think it's okay.
The chances of this being firmware or driver-related are really slim. If that was the case, the error would be constant, not intermittent.

Sorry! but i dont guess i said that anywhere by reflashing i meant reflashing the same ROM. If the problem still presists then it might be a HARDWARE fault but for now its working pretty fine.
Forgot one thing, if this is an HARDWARE issue then is it fixable?? if yes how?
hey man i had this annoying issue whenever i remove the battery..but it should be OK when u do alignment a couple of time repeatedly...try it and post the results here..
I have had alignment problems for a long time. Clearly mine is hardware related, since stock and custom ROMs both show the same problem. Sometimes I'll go for months with no problem, and then I'll have to start realigning several times a day. Thank god for smartskey, otherwise I could rarely close a program. I was told that it was probably a hardware problem and that it would've been covered under warranty (if I was still under warranty), but I never sent it off. Somebody else told me once that It was probably due to there being pressure put on the edges of the screen from the frame around the screen, and if I disassembled it, made sure the seal/padding wasn't touching the touch-sensitive part and then reassembled it, I should be fine. But I looked up the process in the service manual, and WOW it looked like a lot of work with a lot of places where I could screw up the phone, so I just live with it. Sometimes sliding it open and closed would totally mess it up. It seems to help if I just squeeze the edges of the screen to really "seat" it, and then align. Then it seems to stay pretty well aligned for a good while. Good luck!
I cooked up a ROM and installed it and it works now i dont have the problem. Please try my ROM and give me feedback link to it exists in my signature. Thanks. TC

[Q] touchscreen issues?

Before, my vogue had issues with it's touchscreen (dropped it too many times).
Now, it seemed to work for like 4 days without major problems. Usually if it freezes up, a simple reboot will fix that. Nowadays, it happens more often.
The main problem is that it'll freeze up and I'm unable to do anything with it (touchscreen becomes unresponsive).
Anybody experienced this problem? Is it time to get a new phone?
Would a new digitizer affect it?
I read a forum with a person saying a new digitizer was the cause of their touchscreen not working. It may fix yours though but also try calibrating your screen.

It sure fix'd mine! And, only $6.99, with a beautiful new front housing bezel.

Pic shows 2 pieces, but they come put together as a single facia unit. Pretty easy to install too. Details here:

unresponsive touchscreen?

My nexus 7 currently has an unresponsive touchscreen. Almost none of my touches are working now and yesterday the tablet was working just fine but some of the touches were not working. Now almost all the touches arent working, did the hardware just fail on me?

Here is what I posted yesterday on another thread, but short answer is that yes it's most probably hardware fault (I don't have picture at work, so can't attach it here).
I purchased my Nexus 7 from Staples during business trip to San Francisco. My device started having touch screen issues after few hours. Factory reset did fix it and I liked the device a lot so I didn't return it as I thought touch screen issue was just a SW glitch. Issue came back at the airport . Unfortunately I didn't have time to return the device at that point. Issue wasn't manifesting itself all the time, but seemed to come up every time I plugged the device in charger. Symptoms were exactly as in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVkvCXDKU2M and the other one in which multitouch is demonstrated. I suspected different applications as a reason to the problem as well as faulty charger. Then I found this thread and became assured that this must be a HW problem.
As I'm living in Finland and don't know when my next business trip to USA will take place I decided to try and fix the problem myself. I took off the back cover and touch screen worked perfectly. Initially I suspected grounding problem but pretty soon came to conclusion that it can not be the case. The problem in my case was the "sponge" pushing (what I assume is) display / touch flex. I have marked that in the attached picture. Even a very light touch to sponge caused touch screen to go crazy. As I don't have the luxury of immediate warranty repair I decided to remove the sponge and my Nexus 7 has been working flawlessly ever since. I can even charge and everything works as expected. When I started charging the device I placed my Nexus 7 on the table. It probably caused slightly increased pressure on back cover and therefore to "sponge". After removing the sponge I can't see any of the touch screen problems I was having. Couldn't be happier as I don't have any of the other problems people have found and device is working as it should, at least for now.
I don't encourage anyone to do what I did, but if you are in the same situation as I was with imported device, you can try to take off back cover and see if the problems are fixed. You should be very careful though not to break the device especially when it's powered on with back cover off. Hope this helps someone.
EDIT: 22.8.2012. Forgot to mention, that turn of WiFi if using device with back cover off. Turning off NFC and GPS won't hurt, although GPS is receiving only. Reason is that antennas are located on back cover.

[Q](cm11) phone app freezes, screen becomes unresponsive

Hi all,
Im at a loss here, I dont know how to move forward with this problem so im asking for help lol XD.
I just gave my nexus 4 to my gf ( just got my opo last week). The phone was running cyanogen mod 11 ( some nightly version between m6 and m7).
So when my phone came in the mail, I dropped her sim in my nexus 4 (witch was working perfectly) and after making a phone call with it, she tells me she thinks the phone app is broken or something...
So I have a look at it and this is what its doing now. When I call someone, as soon as you click call the screen goes black. To bring back the screen you need to click twice on the sleep/wake button on the side ( kinda like if you were closing the phone and re-opening it) just for the screen to show again but none of the buttons work. Well none of the phone app buttons work, I can still click back/home/previous app buttons or slide down the top menu just fine. just cant click any of the number keys, hang up, hit speaker phone or anything related to the phone app. So in order to hang up I have to click home and then use the drop down menu and click hang up under the phone notification.
Before droping her sim card in the phone I did a standard wipe/factory reset on the phone just to give her a clean platform. So since that was already done I've tried updating to a stable ( M9 in this case) release, problem is still there, so I tried to wipe dalvik, cache and done a data wipe/factory reset from the CWM recovery and flashed a fresh cm 11 M9 with gapps and I still have the problem.
Im at a loss at where to begin looking for a fix for this situation, I've looked on the xda and cm forums and ran plenty of google searches for this problem but im coming up empty ...
any help would be greatly appreciated,
regards
Chris
Edit: omg screen protector was interfering with the proximity sensor... Is this a common problem with nexus 4 or could this provblem still be related to my hardware/software ?
(I've never used a screen protector before).

If the screen protector isn't applied carefully, it might interfere easily with the sensors. If you want to check, then download a sensor tester from the play store, and use it to see if the sensor is working without any protector over it.

haha thanks for your reply, I've been trying to solve this issue for a week, been looking on the cm nightly and stable forums and here on xda trough all the posts that sounded closely related to my problem and didn't find anything... as soon as I post a questions 3 minutes later I found the problem.
To test it, I simply peeled the screen protector off and held it there while I made a call and it worked perfectly !! Then I cut out the part that goes over the prox sensor and its perfect again ( looks like crap but works ). Still gonna download that sensor tester ( curiosity XD).
P.S: totally unrelated to this post, I've been reading some of your "how to" posts here on xda, just wanted to say thanks for all the info you have put out there XD.

Hehe No problem
This happened with my co-worker's Nexus 4 (which is now my Nexus 4). She had been complaining about this for like a month, until I actually saw her screen, and that the corner of her screen protector had flapped loose and had a bunch of crud built up underneath it. It was a forehead smacker for me when I realized how obvious the cause/solution was. Not so obvious when I took possession and replaced the screen and had the same problem.

Proximity sensor not working after screen replacement.

So I've replaced the phone screen and after that, i cant get the proximity sensor to work correctly. I've tried using the phone with the motherboard not attached to the screen (dumb i know) but i was at least able to verify that the sensor works somewhat. It's like it cant see through the glass.
I'm currently on The "Final" version of Resurrection Remix.
What i've tried:
The app Proximity Sensor Reset/Repair.
The app Proximity Fix.
This terminal code/solution here.
Tried *#*#7769#*#* in the dialer but all it does is clear the dialer and nothing else. Weird, it happens with a good number of other codes too. :/ So basically its an issue in its self I think.
Resetting Cache and Dalvik/ART Cache from TWRP.
I'd settle for having the proximity sensor disable so I can make calls in Snapchat, messenger and the dialer. At least, if I cant fix the calibration :/

There's a tiny rubber grommet over the proximity sensor that probably got lost during repair. I have seen this happen several times on this forum. Usually it's stuck to the old screen.

Oh, wow.. welp... this is probably it then. I am indeed missing that part. however, its lost. I have all the old parts but it's not attached to them :/
This doesn't look like the kinda thing I can get easily. How would I go about getting a new one?

The last guy that posted about this went to the city dump in his small town and found that tiny part. stuck to the screen that he threw out. I was amazed by that. Anyhow, some guys used a coffee straw etc, but from what I remember it never worked right. I can only think of buying a broken 6p from ebay or swappa.com/boneyard but that's a lot of money for a grommet. I'd be searching the carpet or repair area really well first.
