[Q] touchscreen issues? - Touch CDMA General

Before, my vogue had issues with it's touchscreen (dropped it too many times).
Now, it seemed to work for like 4 days without major problems. Usually if it freezes up, a simple reboot will fix that. Nowadays, it happens more often.
The main problem is that it'll freeze up and I'm unable to do anything with it (touchscreen becomes unresponsive).
Anybody experienced this problem? Is it time to get a new phone?
Would a new digitizer affect it?

I read a forum with a person saying a new digitizer was the cause of their touchscreen not working. It may fix yours though but also try calibrating your screen.

HTC HERMES Touch Screen Software Issue

I have had a problem with my touchcreen for 2 weeks now. The touchscreen all of a sudden stopped working, i tried all the suggestions on the wiki to re-align the screen. It didn't work. I then replaced the touch screen and it still did not work. My hermes isn't in warranty so i had no choice but to get it fixed myself. I then rang HTC and they told me it was a software fault and they have no solutions as of yet but are looking into it.
I have seen, looking through the forums that many of you have the same problem as me... do any of you think HTC will be true to there word and find a solution, or will we all have to live with smartphones now?

Quite frankly I don't believe HTC's answer. Yes some of these cases maybe software related in which case a hard reset should fix it. If it doesn't then the device is faulty and should be replaced under warranty if possible.
However most cases in my experience are neither hardware nor software!!!!! They are related to the pressure put on the screen/digitizer by the case/bezel and are often intermittent, apparent when device is warm or in a few cases permanent alignment or no screen response is shown. Many report random or even predictable responses such as start menu opening and applications closing despite no user taps on the screen.
I have made several posts telling users not to spend money buying new screens as in the majority of cases there is no fault with the screen or indeed with the software but rather a proportion of cases put pressure on the touch sensitive screen.
I would further point out that a software issue would be apparent for all those with that model - this is not the case.
Mike
I had this problem last week and I solved it realigned the screen. Now, everything is fine. Fortunately.
I think you can soft-reset the HERMES to check if it will work properly, or hard reset.
Did you unlock your screen?
Hello
In some cases, the problem is in a broken conexion under the main processor of the PDA (no phone processor). In other cases, you can see if have a dent in a surface of font case, around of the display. It causes a false measurement in the touch screen system.
Please, you excuse my bad quality for English.

Digitizer replacement?

The warranty for my HD is gone and I would probably need to change the touch screen digitizer myself, found these on ebay for ~60€, but does anyone know how to change them? Again, any help would be appreciated!
Originally:
HTC Touch HD, it has been a wonderful phone until now. I have encountered a wierd problem with the touchscreen.
First the touchscreen stopped working completely, after awhile it suddenly started working, at first it recognized some bits and pieces but now it recognizes every touch as normal, except..
It is very inaccurate and the "sum of inaccurity" seems to change depending on where I push the screen, the screen alignment option in settings does not fix this.
I recorded two videos to show this problem better:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xd1vjiHr2QU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TynTTFIQJv8
Any help would be appreciated on how to fix this!

I have handled it with great care so no big knocks or drops. Ill contact the store about the warranty. Just wondered if theres a way how to simply fix this.
Just noticed, the screen works normally sometimes for one touch, then it goes back to the inaccurate **** :/
Im now guessing that some cable could be loose or something like that?
Have u tried recalibrating the screen? I can't remember exactly where I found it, but its in programs or settings somewhere.

I can tell you from previous experience, HTC does NOT warranty touch screens. You mentioned "a store", so I hope they help you, because HTC will not. >sigh<
Seems a little unfair if they don't seeing as the HD is purely touch screen!

Hmmh, well the store probably sends it to some service center here in Finland that fixes HTC phones.
Indeed sounds very stupid if the warranty doesnt cover the touchscreen.
Perhaps my HD suffered from something else than a broken touchscreen, eg. mainboard or a chip that controls the touch screen. Who knows I'm just hoping it "passes" the warranty :|
Well... Had Hard-SPL on my touch hd and duttys 1.7 rom, so the warranty is gone
Didn't know they were so picky about it, they said it would cost 605€ to repair the screen. So now I should probably start looking for a screen digitizer on ebay and some help on how to change it... Already downloaded the service manual, but there was nothing on how to change the digitizer, could anyone here show me some light to this? Thanks.
I have dismantle my HD to see if there's any way to change only the screen (it's broken)
There's no way, as far as I saw. You have to replace LCD, tourch screen and screen. It's one piece and there's no way easy way to open it without break it.
You can find all of them for about 200E.

Another sad story // hopefully with a good ending
I kinda have the same problem as Viba and others. Sorry for the looong post. But decided to describe in more details my experience up to now, and hope you can help as well.
All of a sudden, I started having problems with the touch screen of the Touch HD. I started noticing that whenever I touched the Touchflo buttons, the phone vibrated. Soon I came to realize the if I touched in some spot, the phone recognized that I was touching lower, to the point that it could not recognize touches in the taskbar, for instance.
The united has 2 or 3 months max. It had some falls before and I do not really know who (or which one) was the culprit.
Tried this as fix: re-alignment, hardresets, Official ROM upgrade. Then I started reading and understanding that the problem was probably the digitizer ("nice to meet you").
I live in Brazil and the Touch HD is not expected be released here any time soon. So the few HTC service centers do not know how to fix it and do not have parts for it. And also, I bought mine from an auction site by some user who bought it abroad, with no warranty whatsoever. I am left alone in this.
I was very frustrated and eager to get my device running again. So I started looking for a new digitizer and also the tools to open my phone. The digitizer (just the digitizer, not the LCD screen) I ordered from an ebay shop in Hong Kong on Monday and is expected to still arrive sometime in this century (IF Brazilian port authorities do not mess up). The tools arrived yesterday.
I downloaded the service manual and said to myself, let's see if the digitizer problem is maybe due to a loose flat cable. Got to work and carefully disassembled the device as per the service manual. (I have to say that, although I try to be carefull, I always scratch, bend or mess something up when I do jobs like these. So I was afraid of cracking some plastic or worse and actually did some.)
Up to where the service manual show, it went incredibly very well. But that's the problem. The service manual guides you to disassemble the unit up to the point where you are with the bezel, LCD and digitizer in one piece.
But hey! I saw zillions of internet shops selling the bezel (actually, the hole housing, but with no LCD), the digitizer or other parts separately! What is going on?
So I started trying to unmount the bezel, LCD and digitizer. Tried several things. It got really late. I was impactient. So I tried splitting the digitizer from the LCD, by inserting a hard plastic aluminium tip between the digitizer and the housing. A very thin plastic kind of tape came out (at lest part of it). So I tried doing it more. No success. And then I put a very thin screwdriver between then (just enough to get an ulgy bent it the plastic housing).
When I had played enough with that puzzle, I gave up and began mounting everything back. The good part is that I was able to get everything back and the phone is working. Well, except for the digitizer.
First thing I did was to kidnap the wife's Nokia E71 I bought her last month and she is not using yet (she couldn't learn to use yet; well, she hasn't even tried it), because I have to have mobile access to my emails.
And I really started now to consider other alternatives. Will some user like me EVER be able to change just the digitizer? Is it even possible? If it is, I would like to give it at least another shot.
But I am also afraid that it could be another part which is in failure. I just don't want to spend more $$$$ in this. It would be better to buy another phone (and maybe not a complete touchscreen - gosh, I miss my Tytn II). I so regret being a gadget freak and not waiting a release in my country.
Shoud I send my phone abroad for a service center repair? My sister lives in Dubai and she may be able to help.
Should I give up my unit and seel the used parts in ebay?
Hope to hear your suggestions. Thanks anyway.

I have already tried with 3 custom roms and 2 original SPL:s with two original roms.
The Finnish law allows me to get my HD replaced if I could prove that the custom rom didn't brake the digitizer. Already sent some emails to the local repairstation for HTC phones here in Finland, lets see...
I run a repair center (US). I have not gotten curious enough to take mine apart, but if someone has a dead one to experiment with, PM me.
Broken digitizer glass
I have the same problem with the digitizer glass being broken. I have had the back off the phone and stripped it back as far as I dare, but the service manual just doesn't tell you how to replace the digitizer and glass only. Checked out youtube where there are many videos with instructions on how to replace the screens and digitizers on lots of different phones as well as the iphone, just nothing on the Blackstone yet.
Any one else found a solution or decent instructions?
Today I disassembled my HD too, found a loose screen wire but nothing else. Even when I attached it properly the screen didn't work.
Has anyone found out how to change the digitizer?
some info
Hello,
I am also have HTC Touch HD, and I am also thinking about replacement of touch screen and housing because of scratches. Here instruction in Russian
http://www.pdacenter.ru/razborka/htc-touch-hd/
step 24 is not shown on the picture, but there is mentioned that in order to replace screen you should push it forward from back side of the screen; also mentioned that screen is fixed with double sided tape (probably it is fixed to the touch screen)
Also, did you try to use any polish to remove minor scratches on the touch screen? HTC Touch HS has resistive screen and probably may be polished (in contrast to capacitive touch screen that has some coating).
All the best
Also, about this problem see
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3911326
You guys should be smarter! If you want to warranty exchange it, flash the normal SPL again and flash a stock rom!

Weird! Mine doesn't have this issue, I've tried the Notes line drawing test.
Neither do I..
Go get a replacement, it might be a faulty device. Not sure what's the point here. It is not a problem with the device, it's a problem with YOUR device.
To be fair mine did do it every once in a while, thought it was perhaps sumthing I had on my finger (oil/grease/water/sweat whatnot) however, desensitised the screen and popped a screen protector on it and it's 100% reliable now..
The first video is not mine so it is NOT my device problem and i tested on another hd2 and it made the same thing. That's why i came up with the touchscreen tweak you find on the tips and tweaks sticky but even that do not solve it 100%.
It has been confirmed has software problem like the pink camera here.

that was my exact thought but with a screen protector i could make it do that so i quitted on it at the end.
Good to know i'm not alone here.
Same problem with mine, have applied the touchscreen tweak and aligned the screen which does make it a little better. Maybe the 1.48 rom will fix it and the camera when its officially released.
dude that is exactly what i got. its hard to write one word without the need to correct it. the keyboard is such a horror. it was easier to write on my diamond. im still thinking about to get money back, ask for a replacement or wait for an update.
Unfortunately rom 1.48 does not solve touchscreen problem nor camera pink issue.
So it's a hardware problem ?

Why don't you take your phone back and go get an iPhone instead? Complaining about it here isn't going to help any and it's not, as far as I can tell, a general issue as plenty of people do not see this effect (myself included).
just tried 2 of the tests on mine and i do not get any of the problems.
I just got an HD2 a couple of days ago on O2 in the UK. I have the stock 1.43 ROM at the moment and have this keyboard jitter really bad too . Should I ring O2 and get a replacement, or is a new ROM likely to fix it?
Cheers.

HTC HD2 Screen Unresponsive

Hello Gents and Gals. I am trying to fix my friends HD2, I flashed his ROM with Energy couple of months ago and all was working fine. He gave the phone back to me saying that it is locked.
I tried unlocking the phone but it seems that the screen is unresponsive, so I flashed it again by going into the boot loader screen "Volume Up + Power Button". The phone stated that it is starting for the first time but the screen was still unresponsive. Any ideas on how to fix this issue? Or do I need to tell him to send the phone back to HTC for repairs?
Sounds like the touch screen died ....
Time for a repair ..
Also this really should have been posted in general , as it is not a ROM release , just an FYI
Aww okay. I'll let him know. Thanks.
I'll post like this in General next time. Tks.
HI, I have now the same problem after ROM Flashed, did you solve the problem by yourself, or really the touch screen died.
Rgds
Same thing with me. I ordered new digitizer+LCD and changed them, but the screen is still unresponsive. Other ROM didn't help.
Some advices?
i seen this happen with several phones, reflash to stock and send to HTC they will repair it for free.
I have same problem, yet my phone was bought 18 months ago...worked perfectly until now.
Can a touch screen get defective after normal usage ?

Yes it can, if your touch functionality of your HD2 has stopped working then your digitizer has probably went out.

This is usually due to the replacement components not being properly installed. Also when one is working with the internals they have to be very careful as some of the internals are very easy to break without you even knowing you did. So the cases you spec of are more than likely not because it was not the Digitizer or LCD was not the problem, but human error.
i fixed mine and it didnt cost me
the unresponsive screen maybe the digitizer buts its more likey the end call button, believe it or not dirt can get behind the contact or because the back button is next to we use the far edge of the end call button thus leading to bending the contact, when any of this happens your screen will be unresponsive
you can either take it to a shop and pay for a new screen and digitizer or take it apart and clean the contacts
go to ifixit for step by step guides
hope that helps

I have no idea what are you talking about, that doesn't make sense, as far as I know is no direct relation between END button and (non-working/responding) touchscreen: you may even disconnect/replace bottom buttons ribbon/flex from motherboard and touchscreen will work if OK(or not, if defective).
Is there anybody who can confirm this(or not)?
3 weeks ago I had a LCD/digitizer replaced (cracked screen, but was still working) all was great till 2 days ago. Screen stopped working - took it back to the place I had replace the screen and they tried 3 brand new screens and still no go. Ended up being my main board - luckily I had a spare HD2 and they pulled that board and all is well again.
Believe it or not your LCD/digitizer might be fine - find someone or a way to test main board would be where I would start after the last 3 days.
Good luck
PS - I did NOT try the end button idea prior to the repair.

From my own experience :
1. It's a common issue, there are hundreds of reports in this forum and I read them all because I had the same problem some months ago
2. Probably not. It's generally hardware-related and often the digitizer (touch responsive screen) . Brief explanation : There's a flaw in the design of the HD2, the thin cable wiring the digitizer to the motherboard, is just below the power button. After some extensive use of your powerbutton, it might happen that the power button touches the cable and cause some kind of shortcut in it which makes the digitizer unresponsive to the motherboard.
3. I replaced mine here : http://www.htcphonerepairs.co.uk/ . Fast repair, secure shipping to Belgium, good price and excellent customer support. (Sounds like advertizing but I swear to be only a happy customer )
There are also multiple videos on youtube explaining how replacing the digitizer yourself if you dare !
Also, I read answers saying that you can somewhat "play" with your buttons (especially the power one) to turnaround the problem. That's correct, BUT it's absolutely inevitable that the problem with come back again if you use the buttons, and you'll have to force more and more to unblock again and repeat again and a again... and that will damage your button bar.
I did this during almost 2 months and that put down all my buttons and now they are really close to the chassis which is very annoying. If only I knew it before I would have replaced the digitizer directly !
For 6 months with my new digitizer + using ICS with soft buttons, I have no problem at all !

Just because this dude has "no idea" it doesn't mean he knows it better.
It IS the END button that gets pressed too often and at some point it begins to mess with the digitizer connection. It can be dirt. It can just be the cable came lose and needs tightening, it can be wear-out.
whatever it is, it is caused by the end-key being too close to the connector cable.
If you guys only searched for this on the HD2 Forums before posting this Thread hat not been necessary. It is the most well known design flaw of the HD2 and as such well documented and commented here.

You didn't get it right or at all:
END key may determine touchscreen failure along the time(being the CAUSE! of this), but the EFFECT is an unusable touchscreen, which cannot be repaired in any other way than replacing it(the touchscreen!!, I mean).
Any other attempt to repair, clean, bend, press, cut or whatever WILL NOT FIX an already faulty touchscreen (even caused by END button excessive or not usage) and who thinks otherwise, no problem with me: SWEET DREAMS!
You sound like my comment hurt you. Sorry if it did. I'm not one hundred percent sure that this issue can be fixed without replacing the screen, yet fairly certain. I've now disassembled two HD2 and couldn't quite find the precise spot where the damage occurred, yet after properly assembling the devices again, one came back alive, the other not. The one which has the screen and buttons not working right is the one that got thrown at me by a kind person. It most likely has physical damage somewhere, although I couldn't locate it. The other one didn't get damage and has screen and buttons work well after complete disassembly and assembly.
Both devices also have different screen types.
I now gave up both devices and am withdrawing myself from the HD2 world. Too many issues with the devices getting old.

Do you have widgetlocker, by any chance ?
Or a lockscreen replacement which disable the notification bar during the "slide to unlock" state ?
I didn't know there was such thing as widgetlocker. I use CM7 latest nightly, never seen that thing.
I also facing this problem from last 2 weeks and i also think this is digitizer problem. If anyone else found the solution else changing the digitizer, then please post.
This is beautiful phone but htc added a poor quality things in it, due to which many users facing such problems.
Nah.. I dont think its because of widget locker.. its the digitizer..
well that's a shame, gotta buy a new digitizer on ebay after just over 1 year of use...

I have the same problem. my screen doesnt work anymore because some water got in from the grill above the screen :S
should I try to take apart and dry off or shall I buy a new digitizer directly?
I think it may be a good idea to try disconnecting your digitizer and reconnect it as it just might be helping. I did it on my girlfriends legend and it has been working perfectly ever since. Maybe a good idea to at least try that before buying a new one. So i guess it could be in the connector to? At least this worked for me.

I also have this problem, but if I wait a couple of minutes the touchscreen
becomes responsive again. Half of the screen works when it's unresponsive (right half of the notification bar and down). It's quite annoying but I cannot afford a new phone at the moment.
I'm also wondering if this might be temperature related, this problem reoccurred very often during the summer but stopped during the winter. But now (spring) it's back again.
My problem got worse and the phone became totally unresponsive, changed it, got a new phone.

exact same problem here, mine works when it feels like working, totally random, I simply can't understand why, I doubt it's the temperature... I think its in the device theres something wrong, I smack it numerous time and it works right after a big smack on the screen, or rub your whole hands on the screen, also, the angle you are holding the phone affects this problem, if none of these work, a phone restart always makes it work at the beginning. Oh boy did my phone took and taking much beating... oh well, I wish I could permanatly fixed the problem here, as I was thinking of handing the phone to my brother when I upgrade, I'm using CM 6.1.
I still recommend the same thing that i posted earlier here, her screen still works perfect.
I had the same problem few months ago. The problem is with the touch digitizer. I bought a digitizer on ebay and replaced it myself. After that my phone has been working fine. Its not that hard to replace it if you have a small knowledge about hardware.
I use to get that unresponsive screen issue only in the summertime, plus it gets worse if I add humidity (read: sweat). I just need to give it some time then to dry off/ cool down outside my pocket, and it's all fine again.
