kitkat update is just a junk... don't update. - Galaxy Note 10.1 General

Hello friends
Many note 10.1 owners were waiting for kitkat update
Now its available...
But its a total junk
I would recommend pls don't update it
Its trim down many of its essential features for nothing
1. Lock screen is ugly now there is no option to reduce size of giant missed notifications,
app shortcuts is on right side only not in canter like before,
only right hand can be use to swipe unlock, swiping on left side can't unlock
2. S pen detach menu options has been gone... now there is no options when you pull out s pen... its a total shame Samsung
3. OS UI is just like phone not like tablet... there are only 3 soft buttons on bottom now just like nexus phone and upper part is just like mobile notification bar and also very tiny its very hard to use it like a tablet...
4. Air view in gallery is very tiny... don't know what the f**k they hv done to it...
Same problem also with video air preview and massages n emails app ... very tiny..
5. Almost All apps are same **** like before no update at all
only very few apps like calculator dealing app etc. are slightly changed
But worth update in my opinion....... NOOOOOOOOOOOO
And if you just want kitkat which is another junk from Google
I think jelly bean was also very stable n yes its work on tablet UI...
but now I hv 10.1 screen n hv to tap here n there just to operate this....
Thanks
Sorry for my bad English
N someone pls tell me how to revert back to jellybean official Indian firmware
Thanks
One more new problem I found today: keyboard has lost its gesture control to change keyboard's layouts
you hv to set it up manually...
update : no more floting windows option in multi windows just 2 fixed windows..... helllllllll

I agree with you that Samsung's implementation of 4.4 and Android in general sucks. But that is where agreement stops. Original Google 4.4 and actually 4.3 as well as 4.2 are very usable and nice looking operational system. And pretty functional too. I feel sorry for all of this millions of Samsung's that stuck with what ever company put on their tablets and phones that are very nicely designed hardware but software Samsung is using not a much for hardware. If you are brave root your device and install one of the non- official close to real Google KitKat firmware and you will be shocked how much better it is. Just mine 2cc. Note 10.1 Original 2012 with OmniROM.

1. I would disagree with you, I think it's an improvement over the old lockscreen: https://hostr.co/file/bRNkmTritpRP/1401072520160.png
2. You can use GMD S Pen to get back the menu that shows up when you pull out the s pen. For me, I found it pointless because it wasn't very customizable nor convenient for me.
3. That's Android's fault, buttons are center now, even on stock AOSP rom.
4. I agree with you that the air view is not that great, but for me this isn't a deal breaker.
5. Not necessarily a bad thing, people have already ported many apps from the Note 10.1 (2014) and other newer devices onto our note.
Google isn't to blame for the issues you have, Samsung is. KitKat actually has many great improvements on our Note 10.1 (being able to move apps to SD Card, more apps are compatible, and overall better performance.
If you insist on going back, you need to flash the old rom via Mobile Odin, but you won't be able to flash the bootloader because of KNOX.

Works Great for me..... :good:

I'm just waiting to see he they make an update that posts out the mess or if one of the many custom roms comes up to the mark soon ie. With all the features working and the original interface.

In my own personal experience I've seen that the performance improvement is leaps and bounds over the 4.1.2 any day and that's all I really care about.

Hallo,
That my mine.
KitKat Update for the Flagship Device, Note 10.1 (2012), is a Shame, a Quick and dirty Update, only they can say we update to Kitkat.
No new Feature (Air Command), Old Software (Weather) convert to new ROM.
The Center Buttons and the Lockscreen come from Google.
In the Future i don't buy any Flagship Device from Samsung, i buy any Budget Device and after 12 Month i drop it into the Trash and buy a newer, but not from Samsung.

This is exactly what they want you to do. Buy and consume... unfotunately we have money to consume and pollute environment for nothing.
I have begun thinking to get Surface for my next tablet when my N8000 is end of its life. Allthought three things was necessary to me - a tablet, phone and a pen - to have in one package, i need to think it all over again. And probably need to have a phone and a tablet in the future (which i dont like, but Samsung cant offer reliable support for its devices).
Sent from my phone - Note 10.1 (N8000)

Agreed with OP with some points
Go for omni if you don't need camera and screen recording features
Omni offers latest kitkat 4.4.3 and gets updated everyday (Delta updates), super smooth, customisable etc.
I installed Touchwiz because i need to use video and screen recording otherwise i would have never updated to touchwiz again, but one good news for touchwiz kitkat is that someday in future out tablet has touch to wake functionality through boeffla kernal..... :good:

I've been waiting and waiting for kitkat but as I have N8010 is gonna be a long time yet I guess......
I wanted to try gnarbo rom but I don't want the phone stuff as I have no need for them.
I'll just have to wait for the official kitkat for my tablet, but then am still unsure whether I'll update as I want the goodies of what my 2014 has so will probably wait for someone to release a good custom rom for my device.
I got my 2014 note 10.1 as a present but had always said it wasn't worth the extra as it wasn't that much better than my n8010. That was before but now I'm changing my mind, I think it is alot better.
Still might ditch them both just to get a galaxy tab S........

My biggest problem is the notification window (when u pull down)
its so freaking big n ugly
anyway does anyone knows when nordic countries will get it?

well, i do want to go back to jelly bean 4.1.2
because its very easy to use by 2 thumbs only
so plz tell me...
does i need to root my tab to use mobile odin?
or just install mobile odin and install firmware through it...???
any possible problems which can occur?
i dont care about boot loader i just need clean os

I'm in the same situation... But I think I will update first to the stock 4.4.2 (whenever that happens) and only after I'll put some custom rom... The "problem" is that I use SPen a lot (that was the reason to buy this tablet), so support for the samsung framework is essencial in whatever rom I'll end up installing...

I have no plan to update Note 10.1 Classic to 4.4.x so I can keep using flash player.
If I want 4.4.x, I just buy Tab Pro 10.1 or use Note 8 (updated to 4.4.x).

I suppose that we should give it some time until it get's really usable. As far as I remember there was a mod or something to remove the ugly and uselesss bottom 3 button bar and restore more or less the 4.1.2 look? Might be mistaken, though....
Anyone actually tried the cracked Phone Screen Sharing program? Does it work on KitKat?

TouchWiz for Android 4/ICS = EPIC FAIL

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ISAI6qbQm6U
Obviously this is a beta version of the upcoming samsung official ICS release for S2, it looks like a total catastrophe with TouchWiz..it looks NOTHING like beautiful Nexus Interface.
If it will look anything remotly similiar on the GNOTE it would be catastrophic..
Yeah agree. If the final looks like this i'm gonna flash vanilla ICS.. Well, i'll probably flash that either way.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
yes this is total dissapointment, all people expect a total new UI, and what we get is something that looks identlical to the interface we have right now... it does not look like ICS at all... looks more like gingerbread... what are Samsung thinking drop the TouchWiz crap, TouchWiz has played out it's roll... it feels like windows 7 but with the xp GUI...
We should send a protest list or something to samsung cause this looks like a total nightmare...all people expect the brilliance of the Nexus GUI.. but this looks even worse then I could imagine.

I wouldn't mind vanilla ICS, but there'd better be a way to turn off the on-screen soft keys on phones that have hardware ones. Also, I can't stand having to reach all the way to the top of the phone for anything but notifications. The menu button at the bottom better continue to work the same.
The vanilla runs well on the fassy. Same stuff new version.

To some one who have not used android before, can you explain to me what you mean with Vanilla ICS ????
You mean it will be possible to root with the standard ICS interface ?
Will the performance be as good as the official or will be lagging and buggs etc ?
Anyway, why it look so similar to todays gingerbread is maybe cause samsung are doing an half-hearted upgrade..
they have promised us ICS.. but they only seem to put small amount of energy to make a big update...
the interface looks identical etc.. Why I wanted ICS was cause it is basically a totally new OS...compared to gingerbread.

Stock Android. The way Google had intended it to look, feel, and perform.
This is unbelievably disappointing. I'm still glad I have my S2, because of the ASOP rom currently under development. I'll most definitely switch between phones whenever I want and just store any content that matters on an SD card, so my phone is virtually hot-swappable between devices.

Yes I understand that, but there will be no official version cause the stock version most be modified to be able to work with GNOTE ???
I just wonder if it is possible to port the ICS to GNOTE without any glitches and performance loss... how does past vanilla versions works for other phones ?

It depends on developer support. If the devs for CM9 can port it to the Note, than only then can we expect a (hopefully) fully functional ICS rom on the Note.
As it stands, Google only releases official vanilla roms to their Nexus line of phones, and they release the source for other manufacturers/devs to port to other phones.
I hope that answers your question mate, the way it was worded was a bit difficult to fully understand.

Well official as in with 'nothing' on it, no carrier or vendor tweaks/applications added and in this case, things like Touchwiz.
Also ICS was launched with Galaxy Nexus not Galaxy Note, but regardless I would presume that Samsung or another developer on XDA or any other forum will create a port to the Galaxy Note.
Vanilla just means that it doesn't have the other unnecessary stuff loaded e.g. Touchwiz. Vanilla is always compiled directly from AOSP source.
Why is everyone so angry about samsung including touchwiz into the ICS rom (I assume that's what this discussion is about?). Isn't the best thing about android the incredible ease of installing another launcher? Shouldn't the stock launcher just be a .apk away?

Well it's true what you said, but Samsung will skin almost everything.
The phone, browser, music player....all of them will be skinned with TW & I guess people in this thread (me include) prefer the stock ICS look and feel.
atm i looks not really nice, but! it is an internal beta, maybe even a alpha version, nobody knows if samsungs is just trying and looking if touchwiz is working under ics, i'm sure that they will make some more cosmetics for ics.
Dunno but no on saw the video? Didn't you something wrong or better few things that where not as expected on it? First the phone had a yellow triangle meaning Samsung had a problem flashing a non stock Rom on the phone. Second on the *#1234# if you not 100% eye sight old man here the csc is unknown.......... . Third the keys back and menu keys aren't functionally at all, only if they had the drivers for them to implant on csc so they could work. Fourth the browser not sure was on xda forums when he started? Or did I see wrong or now I know they where looking xda forum for a working csc file to make the buttons work.
And about touchwiz give me ics on note even with a touch I don't care, so someday the devs can make a custom Rom, on our needs. But they need to have something to play with and take some codes/ideas from the custom files.

Wow.. that is disappointing... i thought i could just flash back the stock rom when ICS is out. Now looks like I'm going to stay rooted for good.

[REQUESTS] MODS, HACKS, ROMS, and features you would like to see on SGS3

Since the launch of the phone is eminent - I figured I would set up this thread for people to request features or mods to be included in the ROMs that are developed for this phone.
If you have a MOD or a feature you had on your previous phone and would like to have it ported over to the GSIII please post it here along with a link to the the original MOD.
I look forward to see what the DEV support will be like for this phone.
REQUESTS: (Collected from thread)
MODS / HACKS
- Continuous scrolling in the app drawer can be changed to scroll right into the widgets tab
- Five App Columns in TW
- A circular battery with percentages, with charging animation, kind of like style A at the UOT Kitchen
- Extended power menu
- Extended notification menu
- Fully rotating desktop, like in Andromeda3
- Remove the at&t branding from notification bar
- Port of AOKP
- Free way to tether
- Remove most of the bloatware
- Voodoo sound
- SamsungDive
- LED notification colors can be changed for specific events
- Convenient method for setting brightness
- A stable USB mass storage mode that does not trash your flash/SD memory
- modded email app that will allow administrator-less access to exchange
- Include the AOSP ringtone/notification/alarms/UI audio alongside samsung's "inspired by nature"
- HQ camera - hi res video at 30 fps, quieted shutter, better sound encoding on video, Concert mode for better sound recording
PORTS
- Ezekeel Kernel
- Stock ICS experience - None CM9 - ie GNexus
- Debloated and optimized TW Rom
- AOKP
- Cyanogen Mod 9
- Fireflys Themes
- ParanoidAndroid Hybrid ROM
THEME COLORS
- Charcoal and light blue combination themes, apps, and dialer
- Lime green color, ROM themes, apps and dialer
idk if this is possible but if the continuous scrolling in the app draw can be changed to go right into the widgets tap that would be nice
i understand that there r launchers out there that would do that for me but just to keep TW would be nice
Five app icons on a single row... I know there's a name for it, but I don't remember it.
I would just love for gtg465 to jump on board and make a tw based rom. Totally a elite dev IMO.

Confirmed method to wipe ROM Install counts (Triangle?)
Root, with method for UnRoot
Devil Kernel on this phone
If you couldn't tell, my priority while under warranty time would be a way to restore to default in case of warranty need.
Those items are a given.... Hence what do you want in your ROMs.... My understanding is both triangle away and the use jig still work for resetting Odin count
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
I've been reading quite a bit, and I read the jig works for getting into download, but does not reset count; and I've read that Triangle will need to be modified to work.
Who know which is right?
I'm basing my 'wants' on what I've experienced with an ICS ROM and Kernel on my Captivate.
I'm particularly interested in kernel things such as overclocking; undervolting; possibly Swap/Zram support; and good tools for modifying. As example, this Kernel for AOKP ICS used on Captivate (and others I believe); and this for making mod settings in the Kernel.
Looking forward to AOKP on the S3...personally i think touchwiz is beyond horrible
Think I will give stock TW a run for a little bit since it is getting some great reviews.
However AOKP is a must and I would love to see MikeyMike bring over Serendipity 9 if he goes this route.
As far as a specific thing in a ROM.....I gotta go with AOSP mms and email apps....TW ones really are junk.

Highly unlikely. Newer devices (see Galaxy Note and Tab 2) and even newer bootloaders on devices like the SGSII do not allow the jig to work when it comes to resetting the binary counter.
Also Triangle Away DOES NOT work with non Exynos processors which is why it works on the international SGSIII but does not work with the Skyrocket, US Galaxy Note, and most likely not the North American SGSIII. (maybe I'll be proven wrong)
So my vote would be to first find a method of rooting and installing CWM without tripping the counter, similar to some of the great work that the devs on the US Galaxy Note have done recently.

I have to admire your tenacity ... did you search for all my posts and decide to "warn" people about the risks of odin and the jig issue. I am sure it is appreciated by those who are here because they want to make their phone cool. Please remember that this is a DEVELOPERS forum which implies that the people here are aware that making modifications to your phone will void their warranty.
With that being said... in the other thread you mentioned that people are putting your posts down... this could be because you are posting the same information in every single forum and thread.
You made a post about the dangers of ODIN in the Development forum... even though this post had no development use and should have been in the general section... further you posted the info in the ODIN forum and this MODs/HACKS thread...
We got it - installing ODIN on your computer will void your phone warranty. I have gladly added a warning to my ODIN thread in the hopes of Warning people and I gave you the credit for the info... let's stop cluttering the forums and stealing threads...

[Q] Anyone ditched KK for 4.3 or 4.2

Just curious to know how many have decided KitKat isn't for them on their Nexus 4s and gone back to a previous version of Android, be it 4.3 or 4.2?
Also, any particular reasons for moving away from KK?
Been on KK for a week or so but I do miss some of the customizations that more establish roms from previous versions offer such as theme engine and various tweaks. I appreciate some of the newer KK roms are getting there but it's still early days.
Thanks.
I switched back not because of the customizations. I am using complete stock. I switched back cuz its like a beta version. They said all the blue in UI will turn into white/gray but its stil blue. Just like a little part of the UI is like it should be. Kinda disappointed that its not done at 100%. Switched back to 4.3 and lovin' it.
I went back to 4.2 because I don't like the direction Google is taking. Now that Android has won the popularity vote, it seems Google is pushing forward more aggressively with its agenda, control.
Android was supposed to be about choices, yet I can no longer choose if I want to use talk instead of hangouts, AOSP browser instead of Chrome or other apps for example. You can no longer use HotSpot (T-Mobile user) unless you modify a db file. Things are being blocked or taken away while being forced into their ecosystem. Google plus, their recent youtube changes. Also instead of privacy being DEFAULT you have to dig deep into settings to enable it. The new Google caller ID while a nice idea, should be an option to enable not one that has automatically been selected for you. The whole agenda is to pry into your private information as much as possible AND make you feel comfortable doing so. But what ship can I jump to? iPhone? No thanks. Stop using smartphones? Not likely.. I guess for now my only option is using an older version of Android that is actually very functional.
Otherwise I do like the smoothness of KitKat, I'm just trying to choose the right ROM that brings back some of the old features with the new.
/sorry for the rant.
KitKat taste better than JellyBean.
What are you looking for as far as customization?
I am still running 4.2.2 on my Nexus 4, it has nothing to do with Kit Kat tho. I'm looking for a 4.4.2 rom that I'm comfortable with, but haven't found one yet. I don't do stock anything so that's out of the question. ?

It is pretty clear when moving to KK that a lot of useful features have been taken away. Many more utilities need root access now to do things like control Airplane Mode or to read battery statistics. I'm sure Google will have some excuses around "security" but I just feel like the walls are closing in on Android. Also KK seems to have introduced more bugs than useful new features. I've had several irritating battery drain problems, partly due to stupid default settings but also to bugs. Seriously considering going back to 4.3 which was perfectly functional for everything I needed.
I stayed on 4.2.2 aokp milestone mostly because everything works perfectly fine without a bug. The only thing not letting me moving forward is the whole thing about using 1 default messaging app. For example i like the default messaging app but i need the quick send from chomp sms. No, i have to use only one. That's what's android is all about, ( the choice that you want to do with your device, if im gonna be taking all the good options away, then mind as well say go iPhone.
I had been using the stock rooted version of 4.4.2 for almost a week now and have been having trouble with the phone freezing up every few hours wherein none of the hardware buttons response. Need to restart the phone then
Not sure how many have been facing these issues
Now i m switching back to Carbon Rom again

Just curious to know how many have decided KitKat isn't for them on their Nexus 4s and gone back to a previous version of Android, be it 4.3 or 4.2?
Also, any particular reasons for moving away from KK?
Been on KK for a week or so but I do miss some of the customizations that more establish roms from previous versions offer such as theme engine and various tweaks. I appreciate some of the newer KK roms are getting there but it's still early days.
Thanks.

I'm waiting for a gingerbread ROM, best android version so far - but no ROMs for the nexus 4. Far faster than anything since.
If you're aware of one, please let me know.

I'm on KK but I also feel that android(AOSP) is going in wrong direction: left side of home screen is Google now in gel, read somewhere and agree that it reminds like iPhone UI,
And all love for android is because is different than iOS, so im in doubt to downgrade, speed on jellybean is good for me and its smooth enough.

It's not possible cause there are no drivers of N4 for gingerbread.
And kk is by far the best Android. I love the design, the features, the speed (ART). I haven't had any bug so far and I am using stock rooted. I think kk is the first of android revisions that's as smooth as ios or even better.

Err, my "gingerbread" comment was meant as a joke.
Of course kk is the best yet, there's really no good reason not to use it. Unless you're a Luddite.

I can see why quite a few look at KitKat and think it a half baked product. It just doesn't seem quite complete, almost like it was rushed out in time for Christmas or something.
The wife has just had her KitKat OTA for her MotoG. She knows nothing about rooting and all the fun stuff, her phone is a phone! However she said she prefers it before the update as her battery life is much worse now. The MotoG comes with pretty much a clean Google rom.
I've tried KitKat again over the last week, but I'm going back to a 4.3 rom as it "feels" more complete if that makes sense.

Rom's are a personal choice , my favorite right up until jellybean was Ginger bread and to be honest I wasn't overly impressed with KK.
However apart from Google trying to undo what android is about .
I can honestly say my battery life and general running is far better on kk and I really like it now.
Wouldn't think about returning to JB.
I missed network indicators and hated hangouts but after searching and fixing my dislikes I now believe my phone has never been this smooth , good looking and battery friendly.
Again its a personal choice but with a little searching and modding I think you can get good results on KK.
Phone : Nexus 4 /Rom : cataclysm / Kernel : Stock.
I'm happy with KK it looks nicer, but in saying so it doesn't feel complete but I guess that's why with have devs coding awesome ROMs to add anything they think is missing. For example... I'm running the latest 4.4 AOKP and at the moment its almost like a stock ROM with only a few features and tweaks. But in time everything we know and love from AOKP will be added. So all in all at the moment I think its just a waiting game while developers work their magic.

Have you even tried Kitkat? You can still use the default messaging app or any other sms app. When you first boot up Kitkat, by default hangout is a messaging app but you can change it. Hangouts > Settings > SMS > SMS Enabled > Default SMS app > Choose any other sms app you prefer.

Poll upgrading 4.4.2 or sticking with whatcha got

Here is my simple poll... I am not giving reasons to why I am sticking with 4.2.2, as many will argue against my points. This is a poll so if anything it is all about your reason not mine, and how many are going one way or the other.

Outside of some small issues with stock firmware, once ironed out, 4.4.2 is more hype than what Google is offering. Change is good, as long as there is a reason to. So far I have no reason to change unless Samsung releases Tizan to the Note 8.0, which will never come.
Already updated using the UK update. Glad to be able to save Google Play All Access music to my SD card now. No down side that I can see.
Polaris Office 5 "usable" (without the long stripe, not root)... not sure if I deleted that app before or installed with 4.4.2 but for taking notes on clasess is a big plus for me. :good:
been using civs rom and kernel and don't feel a real need to update. a new rom won't speed up my ebook reading and comic reading. so it's gotta be preety feature packed for me to update. I haven't even taken 4.4 update on my gn10.1 2013 yet either.
just notice civ updated... so I most likely be upgrading soon, lol.
No good reason to upgrade other than having all 3 notes running KK. Goodness, not a good reason. Frankly, nothing outstanding was gained.

You can now upgrade without the need for flashing the Kitkat Knox bootloader.
Install a custom Kitkat rom of your choosing and then install this kernel and you will have wifi and all things working + some extra's.
for now only for the 5110

I have used your kernel on your 4.2.2 Flexbeam. I had issues with Miracast and Fat32 on SD card. Stock is the only way for me to have my cake and eat it.
There is no real benefit, unless you want a few features that you won't use. A properly setup 4.2.2 will work just as good as 4.4.2 without all the headaches. By the time I will need a feature that I don't have now, I'll be upgrading my hardware. Since my poll has been created, we have a definite split. Yet nobody can give good reasons to upgrade, outside of being newer is better.
Civato, since you are pushing your custom ROM, I have the right to say what I think about it since this is my post. I have tried your ROM before, and found good work with your efforts, but the features you provide are not worth having issues associated with customization of the kernel. If anything nobody not even google can not fix their media subsystem. So, having 4.4.2 for me would be undoing what I have fixed on my device, an I do not care to do anymore troubleshooting as I have done since November with my Note 8.0.

First things first, some fish slapping???????????????
I think you missed the whole point of my post.
Now as it is my right to answer you in YOUR THREAD. Here it is , THE WHY?
Sir,
I posted this info so any user Not wanting to upgrade to the kitkat bootloader that comes with the Knox counter and not possible to revert back to JellyBean Knox free bootloader, can now install a custom Kitkat rom and kernel and check it out. If they don't like it they can go back to JellyBean stock state with the Knox Free JellyBean bootloader.
clear enough.
Now my turn.
Watch my words, in the end 99% will be on kitkat as more regions are supported. I don't understand people. They b*tch about the late Kitkat update and when it finally arives they b*tch about nothing much has changed in UI.
Now mirrorcast is crap for me as it is samsung closed source. Im not supporting any propitairy thing as Android should be 100% open. If not I should by me a Apple.
your exfat problem? Not having it on kitkat as on kitkat they made it open source. On JellyBean it was also samsung propitairy crap so not ablle to really build it good into the kernel , for some cards then.
I have OTG with ntfs RW support , so easy to read out my big hdd. I have cifs, so easy to connect to the pc and read out a whole hdd of my pc.
I have dongle support what you may not find important but a lot others do.
I have supurb batterlife onthe new kitkat kernel and supurb speed that you will never get on stock kernel.
I can control any setting I want of my kernel.
If all people have the same attitude as you , root, custom roms , kernels, triangle away,..... would not exist. Buy a Apple is my advice to you then.
My 2 kids got both a Ipad mini and for them it is the best. Easy in use and really closed so they can't mess with a thing.
Oh and I'm not pushing my rom, I clearly say "a" custom rom.
Is this even my time worth ?

I tried to be polite, but you took some of my explanation to using my poll as a solicitation, a bit personal.
I did praise your work and efforts. I am not knocking in any way your ROM, just making a point for those who are tempted to understand there is a price to pay for using a modded ROM. Maybe I am being a bit protective, but about 50% upgrading to KitKat are finding issues they do not want to deal with. About 33% just jump right in without knowing when there is a lot of info available here to read up on.
Sure, I did not read up on your ROM and Kernel, but I was not interested and did not want to point one thing over another.
I admit your ROM adds some speed improvement, added customization and what not. I consider myself a novice in the Android world, and have managed to figure simple tweaks to make my stock ROM perform better than most custom de-bloated ROMs. Yet the pros seem to have to push 4.4.2 every way possible, for whatever reasoning, personal or not.
The Note 8.0 is not a gaming device, yet peeps think benchmarks are more important than usability. I am just calling it as I see it, 4.4.2 tweaked or not, is not much better than 4.2.2 when properly setup.
Not to point my finger to your ROM customizations, but all non-Samsung stock ROMs in general... Miracast, SD card, and S-pen are the big reasons why I chose Samsung, so they also happen to be propitiatory, many don' t see them as an issue, until they need one or the other to work.

I don't want to fuel a debate with this post cause that is not my purpose and is not helpful to anyone. However, just want to say that after reading the last few posts I feel that you are being a bit harsh on civato for posting some useful info. The post specifically states "any kitkat rom" and never mentioned a specific custom rom. This info is obviously aimed to anyone thinking about upgrading which is what this thread is about.
Personally I appreciate any additional info provided, especially from a highly regarded dev/contributor, that could sway my decision either way and/or make things easier. Glad civato took the time to post for the benefit of others. :good:

S-pen = Crap on stock kernel, as it is way off. A pen needs to be 100% accurate and not so and so.
Did you take the time to look at text pen cursor, of by 5mm, that is a lot. and that is rom problem. JellyBean and kitkat
Pointer is 3mm to the left (Kernel problem, JellyBean and kitkat) , again that is a lot for me and people that use the pen for what it is made. Else I would bought me a Tablet without the pen support.
The only thing you post that I can agree with is lossing Miracast if you use a custom kernel. I don't have any SDCard problems.
And yes the pen is why I buy samsung Note devices.
It seems that my info is still not clear,
You can TRY kitkat now without the feared KNOX kitkat bootloader. Revert back to JB without any problems.
Sorry for my to offer this to the users.
I think what you are trying to do is make believe that KitKat is crap, or you are trying to convince yourself.
It is well known that most people are afraid of changes.
Why start this poll if you are happy with what you have and not interested in updating. ...the truth is you want to see what the rest are doing and then be deluded that you are doing the correct thing. ..
There can be different uses for different guys and needs are different. .. so don't compare. .. do a back up of your current set up, try different roms and stuff,.... decide for yourself. ... you can always go back to your backup if you don't like anything you tried, ... but frankly, 4.2.2 was buggy and Google quickly updated it to 4.3 for fixing those bugs
Frankly you cannot sit on the beach and wonder how it is to be at sea.... you have to take a boat and sail the sea to know for yourself...
So unless you try the update, how can you come to a conclusion what's best for you?
Chill out and enjoy your way

kitkat 4.4.2 on note 8.0 has bugs?
After updating to 4.4.2 my note 8.o is acting strange. Some time my home button isn't working. Some time my capacitive buttons aren't touch activated. (Though interestingly its always working with the included stylus!) When the screen is locked the home button doesnt bring the lock screen back. i.e. it remains black even I press the home button!
Any one facing this problem here after kitkat update?

Updating possibilities for Samsung Galaxy Note 2

My note 2 is updated to 4.4.2. It is rooted. I have Xposed framework installed. I use the phone -as phone, for messaging (WhatsApp), browsing, note taking (Handwritten) - mostly using "Write" APP, and some illustrations using "Write" or sketching Apps. I use Google Handwriting Input as keyboard for English and Marathi (Indian Language).
The software is showing the age and phone has become slow. Cleaning provides some temporary relief. To address this "problem" and to experience the latest version of Android, I'm looking to update it to whatever is possible. I scanned through many threads and found out following:
1. There are quite a few Marshmallow ROMs for Note 2. CM 13 and Resurrection ROMS seem to be most used/discussed. There are few more (like Bliss), based on CM.
2. These ROMs, though provide latest Android version, do not provide the access to S pen.
3. For accessing S - pen DN4 seems to be the most preferred choice. As I understand, It is android version 4.4.4 - not the latest.
4. S-Pen accessibility/functionality is also available through SPenCommand APP (Paid). It's available for CyanogenMod, AOSP and MIUI ROMs.
I'd appreciate any help/suggestions on choice of choice of ROM and any experiences on using SPenCommand with any Marshmallow ROM. Any pointers on what could be pitfalls, or, nasty surprises, in the process are most welcome.
Thanks and Regards
Vikas Garud, Pune, India.
I've tried most of roms available for note 2
Miui/RR Rom/Rubbaband and much more :|
it looks like Eclipse Rom by Ac is the best out there, its based on 4.4.4 but heavily themed like s7/N5 MM .
go for it
Thanks Iskander_mal for sharing your experience!
Eclipse V8
Let me tell you my opinion as a heavy flasher on Note 2, S3 and some other phones that I own.
So we're talking about Note 2 now.
If you need new stuff, very high android experience gor for Unofficial CM13 builds by Trafalgar Square: what's not working now on he's latest build: gps, youtube in Chrome, SD Card as internal storage.
If you want something stable and fast but you don't really need the newest android go for the Official CM 11. You get OTA updates almost every 1-2 weeks and new security updates. Everything I tested so far works there.
In my opinion OCM11 and UCM13 are the best ROMs for you.
Eclipse ROM is themed and optimized with Agni Kernel. I'm not using it. I'm more into stock android because stock is faster.

Thanks "andrewKode" for detailed response. I am looking for something stable and fast. I'm not looking for cutting edge android features. Official CM11 seems to be the way to go for these requirements. Just one doubt: How do you get the S-Pen functionality? I don't need anything fancy - scribbling on some APP like "Write", or sketching on some APP would be sufficient for me. Off course, anything extra is welcome!

Thanks. I was under impression that the stylus itself may not be supported. I've played around with Papyrus and it's good. I'm not particular about Samsung apps. All that I'm looking for is ability of the styles (S-Pen) to scribble something. Your response has relieved me.
Vikas Garud.
All custom roms support Stylus. Some touchwiz based custom roms also support Air Command features.
Note II was released with android jelly bean 4.1.1 which had a strange bug called Sudden Death Syndrome. That bug prompted me to root my phone and install custom ROM in it. But after flashing CM10 I missed Samsung's note taking app as I was by that time so much used to it. I was also looking for note taking app and came across papyrus.
Can someone help me root my Sprint (boost mobile) note 2? I know nothing about rooting or roms or any of that. Just letting everyone know. I'm not very tech friendly when it comes to rooting, roms, flashing or any of that. Thanks in advance! Oh and what would the benefits of rooting and installing those roms be? I have noticed my note 2 hasn't received any updates from Samsung like the person said it would when I bought it from them??

Marshmallow 5Gghz hotspot / Fast Charging
Im still looking for an appropriate upgrade for my CM 10.1 (4.2.2) install on my n7100.
I'm stuck on it since I've had quite the charging issues over time.
I use NEAK kernel to ensure fast charging (2100 mA) adjustable up to 2900 mA (but I don't know how realistic that is to achieve.
Any ideas on fast charging Kernels/ROMs?
Anyway I'm hoping that a new Marshmallow ROM gives access to establishing a 5Ghz wifi hotspot on the device.
In theory the API from Android 6.0 allows this.
Has anyone tried this OR if using a MM based ROM could you have a look?
I have that feeling though I'm not going to be able to get both
DN4 v2.1 makes you feel that you've got a touchwizz for note 4, seems to works great but I've flashed my efs also after flashing adblock host, wifi is stuck 15mins after boot... otherwise of you like samsung stuuf it's fun. btw I'm a total nub!
Then I've tried CM12.1 lollipop by Ivan, everything works, flashing host file with moab seems to introduce latency... Sometimes it did freeze. at this time VR was broken.
Now I stick with CM13 still by Ivan, even though it's not the latest, everything works flawlessly so far! As usual adding a few MB size file host is not perfect for latency flashed batch cm13, gapps nano, moab after being fully wiped.
Even if VR didn't work, it's no longer an issue.
By the way you may need the latest Bootloader, mine is PC1. There is a cap in BL, once reached a special version, you may not be able the remove it easily. I havent tried to remove that, because I'm a total nub and I've got only my daily device to play with
Globally, I was expecting much more trouble! Just try to fly everthing in a row, otherwise it did added extra freezes and latency in my case
hey i went through same problem as you are now.
i have note 2 and i am running resurrection remix marshmallow and to be honest i think its a better option to run this rom on our ageing device than going for stock 4.4.4 roms.
as for spen functionality ,look at my signature, there is a link that provides alternatives to touchwiz/spen functionality.
Honestly RR-MM is the best rom there for our phone<<<<personal preference of course
just try roms and see what fits your needs.
here is a link, which may help you for spen cynogen or aosp by fizzingbees

My friend, listen to me. Do not listen to anyone else here. If it wasn't for Cyanogenmod 13 and Android 6.0 I would have thrown my phone into trash by now. It was so bad and crappy and laggy (and all Androids before Lollipop were). You know people at google work hard to issue out new versions of android to improve performance and everything. Lollipop was a huge jump! They (samsung) didn't give us update to Lollipop or newer because you are expected to buy new Note 4 or something.
Recently I had to revert to stock rom (4.4) for a while and I couldn't believe my eyes. It was the same hardware, the same phone! How could just software make such a huge difference?
Now I see you use s-pen and that may be a problem (i lost my s-pen a while ago so I don't know how it goes).
Anyway, install any rom with android 6.0 and you'll see yorself what I'm talking about. If you don't like it you can always go back, but who in the world would do that?

I have that feeling though I'm not going to be able to get both

regarding your battery charging,i just cant begin to understand why you want to charge your battery at such high mah, given that samsung stock kernel charges it around 1800-1900mah. I hope its not a phony kernel feature otherwise its a miracle that your battery hasnt exploded yet.
i am using agni kernel and you can max charge at 2000mah which is pretty fast given my phone charges from dead to 100% in 1 hr 30min.
for 5gh wifi api,i hope you know what you are talking about. i am in no way expert but having a api and actually having a hardware that support and make use of that api are two different concepts.
i have MM ,so if you want me to,i can check it((if you tell me how to))

I've tried most of roms available for note 2
Miui/RR Rom/Rubbaband and much more :|
it looks like Eclipse Rom by Ac is the best out there, its based on 4.4.4 but heavily themed like s7/N5 MM .
go for it

dont you feel that eclipse rom is somewhat heavy and slow when compared to RR-MM rom.
