[Q] Screen replacement issue... - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I dropped my phone over the weekend and only half of the screen is working. I took it into a local repair guy who comes highly recommended and has excellent reviews.
He tried replacing the entire screen component with two different replacements and there was white banding/lines down the screen both times. He thinks his replacement parts were defective and that the issue has nothing to do with the phone, as there are no white lines with the stock cracked screen.
I'm rooted on cloudy stock and wondering if that has anything at all to do with those lines? For some reason i feel like I remember hearing about this issue on the occasional custom ROM.
Hes getting more in tomorrow and will try again and let me know.
Does anyone have any idea?
Thanks.

The digitizer might be broken. If that's the case, you're better off getting a replacement as digitizers can cost about $300-$500.

The digitizer and LCD assembly is around $100 on eBay...not $300.

Oh wow, it dropped significantly since the last time I checked. Regardless, that could be part of the issue. She you say you replaced the whole screen component, are you talking about the digitizer as well?

Yeah. I just got my galaxy s3 yesterday and I noticed the same thing. I hheard this is a common problem with super amloed screens. Mine has a lot and I'm hoping to return it tomorrow for another one with less.

Or exchange it...it is very common on GS2's and Galaxy Nexus...I've seen people post, they bought a Nexus from Google and they have gone through like 5 getting one that doesn't have the dark blotch problem. Some GS3's have it too, mainly international versions. If you got a bad one, take it back...run LCD Test and show it to them, they have to exchange it.
It's something with the glue not drying inside the digitizer/glass assembly
one of the reason why I have not bought a galaxy s3. I don't want to play the exchange game.

im like that too.... but this defect doesn't bother me as much since it is on ALL phones..regardless if people say they don't have it...they are lying or not testing it properly
it's almost like a guy who says he never masturbates....yea right!
Oh crap.. i was thinking of exchanging my unit because it came from factory with a small hairline nick/scratch on the area above the line sensor. Everything else is mint except this part and it annoys the hell out of me. However, I don't have any small black marks nor blotches on my screen. I just tested with LCD Test and it is perfect. Now I don't know if I should exchange it now for risk of getting a bad lcd :/
Would you guys exchange it if you were in my position?

You have to use lcd test on black with maximum brightness, you have to be in nearly complete dark, and you have to let your eyes adjust to darkness. Otherwise, you won't see them. Even the capacitive key lights are bright enough to wipe them out.
It's really a nonissue, unless your phone is defective. Some people's phones are really defective, and they are even able to take photographs of those.
Normally, there's no way to see them in any real world use.

Ordering a replacement for a cracked screen?

I just cracked my phone and i haven't even had it for 2 weeks. The phone isn't even responding anymore only the left side of the screen is responsive. Has anybody else tried to send their cracked screen in and not get charged?

So you want to extort money from LG?
It costs around 140 to fix through LG repair centers...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Do the lg repair as it is cheaper than buying a screen kit... 140 vs 220 is a no brainer. Just make sure they actually do everything right. They didn't even replace my screen (granted it wasn't cracked) and they forgot to put the torx screws back in as well. I had to get a supervisor on the phone to fix the situation. They were at least able to fix the situation by sending me the two screws, but its been about a week on a 9 day wait for the stuff to arrive.

Touchscreen dead strip!

I've noticed just today that there's a dead strip on the touch screen. It didn't do this yesterday. The Nexus 4 was dropped once from 2 feet high, but that was almost a month ago and everything worked fine until now.
The screen still looks beautiful, no dead pixels, no cracks, and the phone is in a protective case with a screen protector.
It seems to me that the digitiser crapped out, but I'm not sure why it happened so randomly.
A funny thing though is that when I drag something fast across the strip it works. And sometimes it'll recognise a touch as a long touch or two-fingered touch along the strip. Weird.
I attached a few touch test photos to show the issue.
Hopefully there's a fix. Has anyone else had this problem? And if you had to send it back to Google, was something like this covered under warranty? What should I do?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
You can try to replace the screen yourself or tell LG/Google to send a replacement via RMA. They have parts floating around Ebay
How risky/costly is it to replace it myself? And does anyone know if it's covered under warranty? Cause if is, it'll be cheaper just to get a replacement from Google.
Are there other ways to check if it is indeed the digitiser? I've seen that sometimes touch screen problems are software related. And if that's the case, it'll be easy to fix.

And .... Out of curiosity, what does cause a digitiser to fail without the screen actually breaking?

Depends. If you follow the instruction properly, it works well. If you screw up, then Google/LG wont be able to help. A lot of people have done it and succeeded. There are great articles on the web. The price of a digitizer would be about $50-70. I MAY BE WRONG WITH THE PRICING.

In most cases no. Because it worked well and suddenly stopped working. Thus Google would say that its your fault. If you are somehow able to convince the Reps that it wasn't your fault, then there is some hope. I

One way is to remove it and put it to a tester or another motherboard and see if it works. But that takes a lot of time and money,

Anything. The phone might have overheaten to the point that it flashed a certain section of a digitizer. It may also be a battery problem that escalated. If you feel that it's software problem, flash a ROM a see if it works.
IMHO You should send it to LG and get it fixed for about $140~.
This problem should be covered under warranty. If you honestly haven't done anything to cause this damage. (I'm also clueless as to what a user could do themselves to make just one section of the digitizer stop working)
Then lasting 5 months or less would not be considered reasonable and you should be entitled to a replacement.
Remember it is down to the retailer to prove that you caused any damage.
And if you honestly did nothing and it just crapped out on you then you should have nothing to fear in sending it back for a warranty replacement

That happen to my iphone when it got water damage. But if you did not do anything wrong, it should be covered by warranty.
Ditto

Same bug here in Italy where I'm living now even if the the phone was bought last year on UK Play store. Problem is Google rep wrote me RMA can take place only in UK or any other county where N4 was originally available on Play store i.e. NOT Italy.
Does anybody know of a workaround to get the RMA here?

Yeah, I think the overheating might have been what happened to mine. I was using a blackberry charger and I think it might have overheated my battery and fried a strip of my digitizer.

No drop or glass break.. Dead pixel just one..
Hi,
Anybody found the reason for the issue, i too got the same issue; a dead strip exactly in the middle of the screen, My warranty is over already, so anyone has work around for this??

This looks like a dead thread, but Ill take a punt. I dusted my old Nexus 4 off the other day, which had exactly the same issue with the dead strip on the digitiser. I had tried replacing the screen and digitiser (I have up trying to get the original screen off the original digitiser). The issue remained, so I tried a full factory reset, but that also didn't work. I am now wondering if I should get a cheap motherboard, or try flashing the stock ROM again. Has anyone else had any luck with either?

Where to buy quality touch screen replacement?

The glass on my nexus 4 has cracked couple months ago after falling 1-2 feet from my table. Only recently I decided to replace it with the Display + Frame kit in order to avoid all the mess with the heat gun. Replacement was a piece of cake, very easy phone to work with. Sadly, there are bad news. The touch screen is ghosting and being erratic. I bought the replacement from ebay, linked below, and have messaged seller about replacement.
I tried to save couple bucks, but now I will have to ship it back for RMA and have to deal with down time. The unit does not look like a cheaply made clone, but the labeling is pretty much copy and paste with weird font, suggesting that the item might be clone. Now take a look at replacement from repairuniverse website. The touch screen controller has a version number on it, which is 1.1 The original screen on my N4 is version 1.0 (1238). If I am not mistaken, the new touch screen fixes the issue of random minor-ghosting which I did have form factory.
I will try the RMA replacement, but if that does not work, where can I buy the quality touch screen with frame? Is the one sold by repairuniverse as good as it gets?

My sister smashed up her phone a few months back (Nexus 4), and then a few weeks later my girlfriend did the same thing to her Nexus 5. I ordered both replacement screens from ETradeSupply (here's the N4 one: http://www.etradesupply.com/oem-lg-...nd-digitizer-assembly-with-front-housing.html) and while they are definitely pricey they have been working so far without issue.
I feel they are overpriced though and there might be a cheaper and just as reliable solution.

Would you say that those were original parts or counterfeit? Judging by the pictures, they look like original, but then on ebay the seller put up pictures of original replacement and sold counterfeit. The biggest giveaway is probably labels of ribbon cables.

I am not sure, their site says OEM but I do remember there being some strange gold stickers on them that weren't on the busted screens. A few of the sticky tabs (like the one that sits under the camera, and the one under the micro USB port) also did not look the same. Everything else did though, like the radio cables etc., were all the same color. Honestly I don't know for sure.
You should go with spareslg.com. They are the only site I know that appears to sell brand new service packs. Bear in mind you should replace the battery as well, it is impossible for the average person to reuse the battery after a screen replacement.

I will keep spareslg.com in my although they are outside of my region.
Why would the battery need to be replaced? Because of possible damage when taking it out?
I found it easier to take everything out first, and battery last. It is easier to pry the battery on the side where antenna cable is taped.
You can try reuse it. I've seen cases where people have done that and then 2 weeks later it has swollen so much it cracks the back of the phone. LG would replace your battery if they fixed the screen.
Nothing is impossible with right tools and patience I have changed lcd and back glass few months ago and still using old battery without any problems ...

You can check the lg website for Portugal. They will link to spareslg.com for OFFICIAL parts. So there are some global websites that will sell you OEM spare part. They are in my region but for what I see they ship worldwide.

So here is another update. I have put away my broken N4 and used HTC Amaze 4G for quite a while. Recently Amaze began to have issues with touch screen until part of it stopped working all together.
Figured I would give ebay another try. Seller is wholesalegadgetfix, item number 151206512431. Item is listed as OEM, but when I asked the seller they weren't sure. Whatever, placed an ordered and received it today.
First of all, the unit looked OEM-ish. Synaptics MC was clearly labeled and its ribbon cable was stamped with few numbers and Rev 1.1 Display ribbon cable had markings with numbers that are similar to updated actual OEM item.
Overall, markings look OEM, but not necesarly in right place. Frame itself is OEM. Tried to test the unit before assembly but it was almost impossible, therefore, I proceeded with the install.
Right off the bad, no issues with touchscreen like previous ebay unit had, at least not yet *fingers crossed*. Display quality looks good, although I don't remember what original looked like.
One bad thing about it. There is slight light-bleeding at the bottom left where back button is. It's not terrible, but I imagine it won't be a big issues with translucent bar. After-all, this is my best phone option as of now.
Sorry for bumping an old thread.

Nexus 4 unresponsive screen...

Hi,
I have a Nexus 4 16GB here and a Nexus 4 8 GB and my 16GB one isn't working, the screen turns on and it boots fine but the screen is completely unresponsive to touch...
I have tried swapping the logic boards over and the 16GB one doesn't work in the other phone either, which rules out the screen/digitizer but points towards the logic board...
I can't even click on anything in TWRP... Anyone got any ideas or advice?
Bump, could really do with some help on this...
Sounds like display driver on the logic board is done.

I'm afraid nothing can be done on that borked mobo. At least the digitiser is fine!
Shame it's a knockoff digitizer, it was a phone purchased as "brand new" which it clearly wasn't, from eBay.
Lasted a matter of a day before giving up...
I got a full refund after enough hastle so now I'm left with this bit of junk I my room.
Got a spare battery and front/back if I damage my legit 8gb one.
Should I remove the battery from the poop phone? (Does that stop them from becoming dead?)
Bump
I am also suffering from same problem, but in my phone 1/5 Lower part of screen is not receiving any touch, i want to ask something that shall i need to change the digitizer only or digitizer+screen
