Touchscreen dead strip! - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've noticed just today that there's a dead strip on the touch screen. It didn't do this yesterday. The Nexus 4 was dropped once from 2 feet high, but that was almost a month ago and everything worked fine until now.
The screen still looks beautiful, no dead pixels, no cracks, and the phone is in a protective case with a screen protector.
It seems to me that the digitiser crapped out, but I'm not sure why it happened so randomly.
A funny thing though is that when I drag something fast across the strip it works. And sometimes it'll recognise a touch as a long touch or two-fingered touch along the strip. Weird.
I attached a few touch test photos to show the issue.
Hopefully there's a fix. Has anyone else had this problem? And if you had to send it back to Google, was something like this covered under warranty? What should I do?

You can try to replace the screen yourself or tell LG/Google to send a replacement via RMA. They have parts floating around Ebay

How risky/costly is it to replace it myself? And does anyone know if it's covered under warranty? Cause if is, it'll be cheaper just to get a replacement from Google.
Are there other ways to check if it is indeed the digitiser? I've seen that sometimes touch screen problems are software related. And if that's the case, it'll be easy to fix.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

And .... Out of curiosity, what does cause a digitiser to fail without the screen actually breaking?

Depends. If you follow the instruction properly, it works well. If you screw up, then Google/LG wont be able to help. A lot of people have done it and succeeded. There are great articles on the web. The price of a digitizer would be about $50-70. I MAY BE WRONG WITH THE PRICING.

In most cases no. Because it worked well and suddenly stopped working. Thus Google would say that its your fault. If you are somehow able to convince the Reps that it wasn't your fault, then there is some hope. I

One way is to remove it and put it to a tester or another motherboard and see if it works. But that takes a lot of time and money,

Anything. The phone might have overheaten to the point that it flashed a certain section of a digitizer. It may also be a battery problem that escalated. If you feel that it's software problem, flash a ROM a see if it works.
IMHO You should send it to LG and get it fixed for about $140~.

This problem should be covered under warranty. If you honestly haven't done anything to cause this damage. (I'm also clueless as to what a user could do themselves to make just one section of the digitizer stop working)
Then lasting 5 months or less would not be considered reasonable and you should be entitled to a replacement.
Remember it is down to the retailer to prove that you caused any damage.
And if you honestly did nothing and it just crapped out on you then you should have nothing to fear in sending it back for a warranty replacement

That happen to my iphone when it got water damage. But if you did not do anything wrong, it should be covered by warranty.

Ditto

I did an RMA explaining everything like I said above. I got my Nexus 4 replaced by Google, and they didn't charge me anything. New Nexus 4 works fine with no issues - I've been using it since May.

Did you ever find a solution for this?

Same bug here in Italy where I'm living now even if the the phone was bought last year on UK Play store. Problem is Google rep wrote me RMA can take place only in UK or any other county where N4 was originally available on Play store i.e. NOT Italy.
Does anybody know of a workaround to get the RMA here?
Thanks

Yeah, I think the overheating might have been what happened to mine. I was using a blackberry charger and I think it might have overheated my battery and fried a strip of my digitizer.

Even i have got the same problem, i dont know who bumped this old thread, but please guide me to for a low cost workaround for my situation
No drop or glass break.. Dead pixel just one..

Hi,
Anybody found the reason for the issue, i too got the same issue; a dead strip exactly in the middle of the screen, My warranty is over already, so anyone has work around for this??

This looks like a dead thread, but Ill take a punt. I dusted my old Nexus 4 off the other day, which had exactly the same issue with the dead strip on the digitiser. I had tried replacing the screen and digitiser (I have up trying to get the original screen off the original digitiser). The issue remained, so I tried a full factory reset, but that also didn't work. I am now wondering if I should get a cheap motherboard, or try flashing the stock ROM again. Has anyone else had any luck with either?

[Q] just purchased a g2 for $30. screen doesnt turn on

The phone definitely boots up because the lights on the buttons flash on then turn off after some time. The keyboard also lights up. You can tell the backlight turns on on the screen, but there is no picture.
Anyone have any idea about what I should do? Thinking about trying to restore to a stock Tom somehow tonight. Then I'm thinking about looking for screen replacements.
I was curious if anyone has had this issue before.
Update 07/14/11
So I got the screen and switched the old one out for the new one. This one also only has the backlight turning on, but I noticed when I put a part back on, there was a little bump in the middle of the phone. Haven't had a chance to fix it, but I noticed it's a piece hitting this rubber piece that seems to "transport" the sound for the mic from the bottom of the phone to the actual microphone module within the phone.
Removed that rubber piece, and I'll try installing it later. I was getting some blue and red visible in the middle of the phone. Anyone know what's wrong?

How sure are you it's the LCD screen? Replacement screens cost more than what I bought the phone for...lol
it's mostly the physical connection to the screen.
and on your note about it costing more than what you bought the phone for... there are tons of parts on the phone that will cost more than 30bucks. not much you can do about that since you got it non fully functional.

Never had to do it myself, but there is a cable connecting the two parts of the phone. That is usually where this problem originates from. It's not easy to fix though if your not familiar with fixing electronics from what i have seen.

I've taken apart my laptop completely and put it back together before. Completely as in taking the lcd off and different chips and wireless modules and stuff. I think it may be something I can handle. I'm going to take a look at it now. Restoring wont do me any good because not even the boot screen shows up.

It's pretty much a ribbon cable that feeds data to display and stuff. When you buy a spare screen, it usually comes with a connector

So I completely tore apart the phone, got to the point where if I had another LCD screen, I could have easily switched it out. But I don't, so I just put it all back together. I really hope this new LCD will fix the issue. I really hope it's not some other motherboard issue. If all else fails, it goes up on eBay for $70-$100 as is for the phone. If I fix it, I just got myself a phone that goes for $200 used for only $57.
sure. goodluck with it. if you can do it then you're all set. good luck

Sorry. After some searching on eBay, I found some sellers selling it for a few dollars less than 30, e.g. 27.
But I decided to go with a seller who sold more than 200, who claims the screen is an OEM screen, and who is top rated. He sells his for $32. Which makes my phone $62 after all is said and done.
The housing has some scratches on the top and bottom though, which decreases the value a bit, but hey, if it works I'll probably keep it as a backup. Currently have the HD2, but I got a Vibrant with original box and accessories for $100, so I think I'm going to sell the HD2.
That was kinda off topic, sorry
LCD screen should be here by the 13th.

I don't own a G2 but I still think this could be a similar issue to what we get over here on the HTC Droid Incredible. First, what makes you believe its still a screen issue if it lit but just didn't throw picture? Usually thats the symptom of having the wrong recovery version for the device hardware version. Normally for us what happens is we will get somebody who is new and rooting for the first time and they'll end up flashing the wrong recovery or freak out because they don't realize the root process takes a little while and yank the cord. End result being exactly what you've explained above. Phone starts but no screen. So we end up having them do the ruu or a second option which we call a "blind install" where you drop whatever your p file(ours is PB31IMG.zip) so whatever it is for the G2 drop that on the SD and reboot to hboot and do the update process by simply knowing how long to wait between key presses and what keys to hit without useing the screen. Its a unique process and all very magical. Haven't lost a single Inc yet because of this issue.
Anyways bud just a thought...

It doesn't seem to be a ROM issue.
Update 7/18: Sold the G2 on eBay and still made a good lump of money. I was very happy, until another G2 popped up with the same exact issue. Got it for a steal as well, and I tried the OEM screen I got from eBay, and it was still having issues, and it seems to cause the phone to overheat while charging. Definitely a defective screen and someones getting a great deal on a decent condition G2 because I already took the payment after I figured it was the screen I got.
I'm going to try to get a replacement from the guy that sold it to me on eBay, but I already left him positive feedback thinking it was the phone's fault.
Will update probably late July or early August when all of this gets sorted out.
TL;DR: bought 2nd g2 with same issue, turns out replacement screen didn't work in the 2nd g2, too late to not sell the first g2, getting another replacement screen to fix 2nd g2. First g2 was in better condition though =|
SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET

[Q] Is this normal?

Just recieved my Nexus 7 today and when going to turn it on, I was greeted by a fantastic grey, washed out screen. This can't be normal can it? Has anyone else had this problem and managed to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I have attached an image for people to inspect, and the only reason I am creating a new thread is because I don't think this is the same issue as the other 'screen washed out' thread. Thanks!
Oh wow. There is no easy way to say it but, no, that is not normal. It may be just that the display cable is not connected all the way or that there actually is something wrong with the screen itself. Either way though, I would RMA that. Tell Google to overnight it like the rest of them that are shipping and you want it advance RMAed.
The problems with these devices is unacceptable.

Hmm this is going to seem VERY weird, but just two seconds ago, I got up out of my chair quickly while holding the device and now the screen looks fine. What is going on with the QC with these? Would you reccomend still RMAing it? I am not even joking, I simply stood up with the device and it fixed itself.
EDIT: Well guess what. I left the device off for the duration of just writing this post and it is back to its washed out self. Looks like it's time to RMA!

Yes, definitely. Just because the problem has(or so it appears to have) fixed itself for the time being doesn't mean that the problem won't creep up or just full blown come back right out of warranty/return window. Also, if something like that got through quality control, what else could be wrong with the device? I would still RMA to be sure. Since this problem appears to be coming and going, I would try to send a picture of the problem in action to someone at Google and have them attach it to your RMA. Maybe even try to put your Google email address in there on a piece of paper or something so that they know that you indeed did take the picture because if they recieve it with no apparent problems, they will assume that you are just returning the device and charge you a 15% surcharge.

Your not the only one that has this problem looks like first batch shipments have alot defects and bugs
Thanks very much for your replies! I have used the Google Play 'contact us' page (not sure if this is the best way but it's a start!) to get this RMA going. Very annoyed at the QC on this device and this many glaring issues really doesn't give me high hopes about the replacement either.
Already sent mine back to ebuyer. Had light bleed. So annoying. Rushed them out I think.

NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

It finally happened I have a big dead area on my Atrix. I can no longer type the letters T, G or V. It's weird, in Multi Touch Tester when I put my finger there, it shows points on both sides of the column. It has rendered my Atrix nearly useless. I tried formatting everything and reloading a ROM in CWM and it is still busted. I guess this is the end. Sadly, I can't get a new phone for a few more days.
I'm really disappointed by this. I don't even know what new phone I would get....
Is it even worth replacing the digitizer? It was woring fine this morning, this happened after dinner. A sad, sad day indeed

i have the same problem (again)
fist time i hat a part of the upper screen not working now its also the letters t,g,v that seem to be dead areas.
my guesses are that i had my device running under too much heat, as i stresstested it for some periode of time with 80+°C and the letters are near the area of the cpu which was causeing much heat. well now it's just some 30-40 bucks for a new digitizer and 15mins of work for replacement.
little tip: install a cm7-rom and enable 180° rotation so you can use ur phone even in portrait mode. if you have probs with lower screen area just rotate your device
If you get a new digitizer with the frame its pretty easy to fix yourself, not particularly expensive and you should be able to return it easily if it's faulty. Check ebay.

I tried with an "OEM" digitizer off eBay and it was faulty. Got an original used one off eBay with bezel attached in good Nick and it was much easier to fit and works like a charm.
One word of warning, remove the LCD before pushing the digitizer cable through the phone.

I wish I knew this as well. It must be some sort of separation between the digitizer and the screen because wedging something between the battery and fingerprint reader can improve the touch sensor.

I think its overheating in general. I've never over locked this phone and even simple browsing through xda heats the CPU up to 55-60 degrees.

Purple and black stains on the display

Hello!
I bought the Galaxy S4 about two months ago and since then, I always used it with a screen protector and a case. But today, I found that many purple and black spots and smears have formed on the AMOLED. I have never dropped the phone or exposed it to heat. I tried rebooting and activated the LCD test mode, but none of them helped. Is it a hardware issue?
Can anybody tell me what's going on and help me?
Best regards,

Definitely hardware. Looks like the AMOLED itself. If you have warranty, I suggest you use it, because that's hardware, not software.
Hm, thanks for the help, although that certainly isn't good news... I will try to contact Amazon, let's hope they can help me with this problem.
As there is a large concentration of purple in the corner, I'd suggest that Samsung will try and tell you its been dropped and in that case, I don't think they will cover it under warranty.
I wish you luck!

Odd indeed ... usually when a screen is damaged or faulty bars appear pixel burned altered colors and stuff ... if i saw that and didn't know i d tell u that u definetely someone spilled ink on the screen ... those marks are exactly like it ... hopefully they ll repair it ...
I think samsung should change it under warranty because clearly, screen is not broken and still degraded. So it's bad display.
But they might say it's caused by water damage which is not covered under warranty.
Let's hope for the best.
They do have a way to tell if it's water damage, there is a sticker which turns blue when wet, so if there is no damage to the case, they should change it fine... I have had good luck with Amazon regarding returning faulty items...

Thank you guys for all the support, I sent it back to Amazon and today I got the mail that they have got the package. Now someone's going to look if this is covered by standard warranty... Let's hope for the best indeed!
Hope they change it for you. As for sure seems the amoled has burned

Wow thats terrible, i hope samsung sort it out for you!
I am curious what happened? I woke up this morning and I had black and purple all over my screen to. It was fine when I went to bed. The last two apps I used were Pandora and Xtreme alarm clock if that matters

Definitely hardware. Looks like the AMOLED itself. If you have warranty, I suggest you use it, because that's hardware, not software.

[Help] Dead screen before and after screen replacement

Hey guys, so a couple of weeks ago I dropped my N4 in water for about 10 seconds, as I was attempting to shut it down the screen flickered and it all went dead.
Fine, so after a week taken apart and in rice the battery is screwed, standard stuff, bought an OEM replacement battery, and then it turned on, worked as it should, except the screen was completely dead, no backlight no nothing.
Again fine, I order a non-OEM screen/digitizer/frame assembly, it arrived today and after being god damn sure everything is correctly assembled I power it on to find the screen is still completely off even though the phone is starting up and working normally (I can hear it unlocking, I can receive calls etc)
Is there another component that has to do with the signal to the screen that may have suffered from the water damage?
Bump. Can anyone shed any light on anything else to try?

My guess is you got a bad screen. There's lots of cheap ones out there. See if you can return it

I suppose it's a shame I can't know for sure cause the new one could be faulty, and the old one could be water damaged in some way.

Hang on, I just realised the digitizer works on both screens, I can unlock it and navigate what I remember from my layout just fine, it's just the display on the new one and the old one, surely that means something else is broken on the mainboard perhaps?
