[Q] Stock android 4.4.2 custom rom cooking - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
I'm new happy owner of the g2(d802) i was wondering how can i create a rom by my self just usual things like make a flashable zip from kdz, deodex, root, zipaling stock rom and flash it. I tried with dsixda's Android Kitchen but i cant get it boot(always hang at bootloop) so i was wondering what tools apps and programs do you guys use for those things i tried to look for the guides but i didn't find useful.
Thanks in advance for your help and informations
All the best
Edit:
So looking for a friendly dev who can describe us how to extract, debloat, deodex, zipaling and create a flashable zip from a stock kdz firmware!
Thanks to everyone who want to help me(us) i will create a how to guide in general when i learn some basic things so a lot of people can modify their roms for their needs and there will be more custom roms and building ideas

you can use this guide to make a stock rom, if you want to debloat just grab ext2explore and save the system.img as a folder so that you can debloat it but you want to deodex/root/zipalign use ArchiKitchen just get a Linux virtual machine if you don't have access to linux

what are things you are modifying from the stock rom, have you tried just making stock rom first and flashing to see if that works?

here is something to try after flashing the rom instead of rebooting setup and adb window and type adb logcat but don't press enter, reboot your phone and when you see lg logo press enter in adb and when phone bootloops into recovery copy the logcat to a notpad or something so that can see if you can find any errors

I'm very interested in making some custom roms but i need a small help at start

hey @Boris31 can you share the updater script you are using?, also another thing if you are using twrp to flash, after you flash the modified rom instead of rebooting go to advanced>file manager and scroll to your system and check to see if any files are there after the flash/if you are using philz you will need to setup the aroma file manager(although if you were then the flash process wouldn't succeed and it would just hang if your problem is what I think it is)

[Q] Verizon G-Tab Update - Effect on rooted tab?

If I do the Verizon update will it "unroot" my Tab? Will it screw anything up?
Thanks.
I'm not sure, I'm rooted and when I clicked to install the update, my tab did nothing. I know that doesn't help.
Same thing happened to me, there is another thread about this and there is a post of the update file, I ran that and it worked

Hmmm. When I click those links I get a bunch gobblygoop on my screen.
EDIT: Just read it needs to be opened in IE. Weird.
Yeah, I found it weird too.
I never tried from the Tab though, might work from there I guess
Update:tried from tab with Dolphin....same result as Chrome
Ok, so now it's on the Tab. How do I make the update do it's thing?
name it update.zip....put it in root of SD, reboot to recovery and choose install update.zip
At least that is what I did and it worked perfectly......do it at your own risk though.

Dumb question: How do I boot to recovery?
Turn off....hold volume up while powering on
Volume down to install update.zip and press home. (after menu comes up)
Make sure you have decently full battery or on AC
Worked! Thanks!
Still can't copy/paste from the mail program.
Update
I zipped the file so it should be easier to dl. Try this link. If you are going to rename it unzip it first, then rename. It was originally a htm file in my cache folder but as above some have had success renaming and flashing it. I have not tried yet myself yet as I'd like to here from people who have root and bootstrapped ext filesystem. If you do let us all know your results. Cheers.

I put the update.zip on rapidshare for anyone who wants it
http://rapidshare.com/files/456489639/update.zip
So has anyone successfully updated that was rooted and running ext4?
Will it affect kernels or root access? If this gets rid of my of my kernel and won't allow to reflash ill be pissed! So if anyone has installed this please let me know. And if it's for the worst. Tell me how to get rid of the damn update icon!

Root was still there, and kernel build number did not change. the [email protected] did change.
I cannot guarantee that it will not affect kernel, but it did number change the build number so it suggests it did not

DeadCalm(Rage) has the boot logo in 2 locations. The normal place, system/media, and another, I think in system/data. Use a file explorer to find the one that's NOT in the system/media folder and just delete it. You're looking for something by the name of "bootanimation.zip."
I have looked in the file you stated I have had no luck finding it

Sorry, it took me a while to respond. I had to try to figure out if I told you correct locations. The boot animation should be in system/media, however I told you it could also be in system/data on this ROM. However, I looked around a little and I think it's actually in data/local or data/media. I saw this in another thread, but I wasn't able to check in phone because I'm running a different ROM. Delete the one in data/local and leave the other one in system/media.

is it possible that the deadrage logo was somehow embedded between the rom and recovery and thats why i cannot delete it and if so how do i get rid of it
btw are you one of the original developers of the rom
i have attempted to delete the file in the location you stated but to no avail

Sorry, I'm a little dense sometimes, it just clicked in my head that you were talking about the image and not the animation. This needs to be flashed in recovery. There is a thread on Droidrzr.com and, I think on here, that have flashable boot images. Again, I apologize for being slow.

Here's the thread on DroidRzr. It gives you two options, you can make your own or you can DL the flashable .zip. Personally, I take the easy way and choose the flashable .zip. Just DL and flash in recovery.

[Q] Cannot change boot animations/sound

Before you all start yelling at me for not looking around on the forum, i actually did look around, but most answers were different and were confusing me.
Im running bobcat Rom and the boot animation and sound are horrible! I tried alot of methodes to install boot animations but always failed.
Can someone please help me out with this stupid thing?
Thanks ♥
From where you are downloading bootanimation? It must be flashable zip file?

I tried boot animation app, and i tried some bootanimation from here, which i installed trough "install update from ZIP".
Yea..im quite confused with the bootanimation and bootsound file structure of this phone. Usually it will just be sitting there, bootanimation.zip, but here, all I see is .qmg?

I guess you forgot to paste the boot-animation link.
Your fone must be rooted as you are installing custom rom. you can manually replace the bootanimation file using root explorer.
Try this thread.

Let me know if you still have issue.
Yeah same all i see is .qmg
and tollboy, Isnt it obvious when someone has a custom rom, that hes phone is rooted? lol

I was implying the same..:victory:
Ok, but can someone ****ing give the solution already to this easy problem?
I have the same issue, is someone have found a solution yet????
you can copy/paste files to the phone in the followingstructure:-
/system/media/bootsamsung.qmg
/system/media/bootsamsungloop.qmg
/system/media/bootsamsungmini.qmg
/system/media/bootsamsungminiloop.qmg
/system/media/audio/ui/PowerOn.ogg
/system/media/audio/ui/PowerOff.ogg
/system/media/video/shutdown/shutdown.qmg
/system/media/video/shutdown/shutdown.qmg.cover
first 4 files are to do with boot animation, next 2 are the boot and shutdown sounds and the last 2 are shutdown animation.
once you copy them accross, you msut set permisions on all files to rw-r--r--
an example of a flashable zip is attached, and this just saves the bother of doing it all manually. just flash it from custom recovery (and maybe need to wipe dalvik and cache, I've heard that changes to system files on odex roms require this?)
p.s. the attached file is the s5 boot animations and sounds. i didn't make it....can't remember where i got it, so apologies to the creator

Recovery Issues

Hey guys I'm fairly new to the droid, but not new to installing stuff and that. I've tried multiple times to install a recovery but twrp doesn't, through fast boot it says it's invalid or something. Somehow I got cwm on it but to install a new Rom I've to make a complete backup since I've heard these phones brick pretty easily. The data can't be mounted to backup And I can't backup on internal storage either.
If you guys could help me out a bit it would be great. Thanks

Which system version are you on, and which version of TWRP did you try? Where did you get the TWRP? Check this thread it has all the walkthroughs and download links needed... Side note this should be in general or q&a not in the Dev section
We cannot teach people anything; we can only help them discover it within themselves.
I'm on the stock rom 4.4, and I've already gone through the steps, as I said and understand how these things work, the cwm I'm using now installed but doesn't allow for a data backup. I read there isn't one for this phone which allows that.

Which TWRP did you use... Where did you get it from.... Please check the linked thread and ensure you grabbed the proper TWRP for our device also maybe try flashing by a different method if you did use the correct TWRP

I'm a noob... but not so much to make that error... I rename the zip because I was thinking that the dots (CloudyG3_[2.1] <---- these dots) is making adb not read the zip, so I rename it to a simple "cloudyrom" and it doesnt work anyway.... but I'm a little more happy because I know that I can still make the phone work
