MF3? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I just got this s4. It has 4.4.2 ota, does this mean I have MF3? If I do have MF3 am I just limited to safetrap recovery ?

You probably have nb1 or nc1. From a terminal emulator on your phone type
su
getprop ro.bootloader
That'll tell you for sure
In either case you are limited to safestrap

That's what you're going to need to use. You'll downgrade to mk2, install safestrap and then flash a rooted rom

Do I follow this ? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2692825 step one says to flash that stock rom in Odin I'm still 100% do I just skip step 1 ?
Edit : never mind I see what he did there. So after 6 steps I just boot back into safetrap recovery and flash roms as usual ?

Step 1 says to put the rooted nb1 rom on your sdcard, you'll need it to flash in safestrap, you don't Odin that one You use Odin to flash the mk2 stock firmware to downgrade your phone, root it, and install safestrap

I read a bit. It seems not worth it gonna have to leave the device I get a chance , it stinks because it's for such a silly reason

The guy who I traded my note 2 with isn't willing to trade back. I'm stuck with the s4 it seems. Gonna try to work on this phone today after work . Along the way if I run into issues I'll ask here. Thanks

I just read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2692825 a little bit more. Can you guys tell me if I'm comprehending all these right. So step 2 gets me to MK2 bootloader from NB1 that I currently have. And with the MK2 bootloader I'm able to use the 4.3 root methods indicated in the thread. What's preventing 4.4.2 from being rooted isnt kitkat itself but the NB1 bootloader that came with it through ota, because from the look of it after MK2 "downgrade" I'll still have kitkat?
Step 5, if my final goal isn't just to have stock rooted can I flash a rom of my choice here instead of the stock rom indicated in the thread ? If I am able to just flash another rom in step 5, will I still need the stock kernel in step 6 ? Thank you thank you
Edit: step 3 indicates nb1 safetrap but would I have already "downgraded" to Mk2 tho ?

[Q] Galaxy S4 SGH-i337 4.4.2 root help!

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong place or if there is already a thread about this. If there is, I couldn't find it. I really want to root my phone to use it as a mobile wifi hotspot for my tablet and I am having a really hard time trying to find a link to a forum or a youtube video about how to root my phone. So far, I have only found root tutorials for models other than mine. Do I just have an obscure phone model or is it just more difficult to root? I have wanted to do this for quite some time now so any help is appreciated!
4.4.2 is a new release so currently there is not a root method. As of my last reading there is some significant progress in finding a root method. This is definitely not an obscure phone model. Just a brand new update that developers are still working to root.

This is the only option. All you have to do to mount system is a quick flash of one package in ODIN, and then you just have to do another ODIN after you finish flashing in recovery. It's not that bad really.

Not being able to flash and restore backups on the go definitely is a downside, so this definitely isn't for flashaholics or people who want their flashable mods wherever they are. It's a matter of whether you're willing to take time to set it up stable all at once or just chill back until things are updated (root method and safestrap namely)

That is not correct. I did some reading and I found the information I was looking for.
I was able to update my stock AT&T i337 4.2.2 (MF3) to stock AT&T i337 4.4.2 (NB1) without using Odin.
This is a very easy and simple procedure that doesn't require root nor custom recovery. In fact, it will only work if you have stock AT&T (no root, no custom recovery).
First, update to MK2 using these steps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2573080
Then, update from MK2 to NB1 using these steps:
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/att-galaxy-s4-sgh-i337-android-4-4-2-kitkat-ota-update-i337ucufnb1/
Great solution to those who missed the AT&T OTA. No root needed, no unlock, no custom recovery, just the stock recovery. Beautiful!!!

[Q] Updated to 4.4.2 KitKat any Rom suggestions?

I recently updated to 4.4.2 KitKat on my AT&T Galaxy S4. I am rooted with safestrap installed. I am new to Androids and I was wondering if there were any roms available for baseband I337UCUFNB1, I found GoldenEye but it won't work on my baseband without a certain file being flashed through Odin first, every link I have come across to download this file ends up saying file not found. Are there any safe roms out there that I can use? I've searched all over and found some, but it's just kind of confusing to me. Thanks in advance!

You can safely downgrade. To Sim unlock, you don't need to downgrade.

All required info in All Things AT&T
Steps:
1. Root (read root section of the thread)
2. Install safestrap v3.72 and install recovery using the app. You may have to use selinuxmodechanger app to set selinux to permissive if the recovery installation doesnt work
Reboot the phone and safestrap recovery can be accessed from the splash screen that will be shown during boot.
3. Flash the MF3 modem from safestrap recovery (link to modems available in the ATT thread)
4. Reboot the phone and run regionlockaway app. This should successfully sim unlock the phone for you.
5. You can flash back the NI1 modem in safestrap recovery.
Will be doing this now. Will let you know when I get working

[Q] GALAXY S4 ATnT 5.0.1 OFFICIAL NEED HELP HERE!

My playstore not working said. " cant initialize...."
I know the cause of this is the freedom. I used freedom when im in kitkat official. Im also rooted that time. Then i forgot to delete the "host" file before updating. Now my "at&t galaxy s4 is 5.0
1 official" can someone help me root this device pls. To fix this problem ? Or any fix/method to this problem without root ?
I also dont know what is lock and unlock bootloader, even how to check if i have lock or unlock bootloader. What does it mean if i have lock and unlock bootloader
Note: my galaxy s4 is at&t 5.0.1 not rooted.
My galaxy s4 at&t can read any sim card because its already factory unlocked.
First, freedom is warez. DO NOT USE IT. To get you're phone working properly again you'll most likely need to flash the nb1 firmware in Odin. You can then work on rooting your device and getting back to 5.x. But you'll have to read this very carefully first, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53758227

All at&t i337's have a locked bootloader. So don't worry about that. Carefully read the link I gave you. Yes it's long and yes it's going to take a lot of reading and re-reading before it makes sense. And yes you can downgrade to kitkat, nb1, and yes you can have root on 5.0. Look at how to flash nb1 in Odin, how to update to nc1 and root, and how to keep root to oc3, 5.0.

The people who contribute here donate their time to the forums. Usually, they do it because they like to help others. For many it is like a hobby.
However, there is already a lot of information collected here on the forums. Most people don't really enjoy saying the same things over and over. And besides, it is not really very polite to ask someone hold your hand, when you can find the information and process it yourself.
Most people here would say, if you can't understand the directions, then you shouldn't probably be trying to modify your phone. So, to re-iterate what jd said, read the instructions, read them again, and again if necessary. Only proceed when you understand what you are doing. If something doesn't make sense to you, ask a specific question and someone will be happy to explain.
