[Q] How to Update from MF3 to Kitkat - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

How to update from stock AT&T 4.2.2 (i337 MF3) to kitkat?
Do I need CWM or can I use safestrap?
I prefer to flash directly from my cellphone since I can't use Odin because I have a Mac.
Thanks in advance! :good:

You'll need to flash tar files so will need Odin.

That is not correct. I did some reading and I found the information I was looking for.
I was able to update my stock AT&T i337 4.2.2 (MF3) to stock AT&T i337 4.4.2 (NB1) without using Odin.
This is a very easy and simple procedure that doesn't require root nor custom recovery. In fact, it will only work if you have stock AT&T (no root, no custom recovery).
First, update to MK2 using these steps:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2573080
Then, update from MK2 to NB1 using these steps:
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/att-galaxy-s4-sgh-i337-android-4-4-2-kitkat-ota-update-i337ucufnb1/
Great solution to those who missed the AT&T OTA. No root needed, no unlock, no custom recovery, just the stock recovery. Beautiful!!!

Good job, I'd forgotten about the update.zip

Thanks. It took me about 4 hours of researching and reading to find that.
There are too many solutions and ways to do things which just make it more difficult for us to do a simple task.

4.2.2 mf3 recovery??

Hey guys,
I have been doing alot of research but cannot seem to come up with anything. I have a i-337. 4.2.2 mf3 firmware. I have seen the safestrap recovery but did not want to use safestrap. Is there any other custom recovery that I can use to flash a custom rom? Thanks for the help.

Thats what I figured. Everything I read is from september, so I was just trying to get the latest word. Is 4.3 out for us I-337 users? And if so, Can someone point me in the direction of the tar file to install using ODIN, if that's possible yet? Thanks a bunch.

No Odin tar for 4.3 yet, but search through the 4.3 thread in the General forum and you'll find links and instructions buried in there on sideloading 4.3 via ADB, (if you don't simply want to wait for the OTA). Note that you must have a pretty clean stock phone to get it to work. If you want root, I would suggest rooting MF3 first, then enabling survival mode in SuperSU Pro, as that's the safest way to get root on 4.3. One more thing: no custom ROMs, recovery, anything is available on 4.3, just root.

Status 7 Error when Trying Manual OTA

Getting the Status 7 error "/system/xbin/dexdump" has unexpected contents when attempting to manually flash the OTA vía stock recovery. Any one have a fix or files for this? I really don't want to clear the Wife's phone as she has it all set up already. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you are not completely stock, the error shows it found modded files in your system partition. Odin the full mk2 tar file first and try again.

I was hoping to avoid doing the full flash again. I have seen some threads of some Nexus 7 members flashing the required files they were so kindly provided so they can move forward to the 4.4.2 update similar to my situation. If I can't then I guess I will have to suck it up and erase her info and start over.

You don't have to erase her info, just flash the mk2 tar file and then install the update. No data wipe required.

Wait dumb question... .. . I take it that the flash won't erase the info due to being an official rom? I mean the one from random45. This has slipped my mind.......

Correct, the tar will not wipe data. Everything will be in tact from random45's download.

This forum is for the Sprint Galaxy S4, and it seems you have the T-Mobile device. Here's a link to the tmobile forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-tmobile
MK2 is the version number that is specific to Sprint. T-Mobile may have the same number or not. But all you need to do is download the .tar file for the latest 4.3 ROM that is available for your phone, put the phone in download mode, and flash via the ODIN utility that you can download as well. This is not a complete guide, so see the relevant threads in the TM forum. Alternatively, there may be a T-Mobile .tar for 4.4.2 that you can ODIN directly. It is up to you to see if it wipes data or not. The one for Sprint does.

[Q] Help!!! Flashed my S4 to Danvdh GE 4.4.2 and it keeps rebooting!!!

First of all, thanks for reading this...
Here goes the story. I have a Galaxy S4 SGH-I337 AT&T. Yesterday I updated to 4.4.2 OTA. The idea of flashing to google edition ROM came into my mind so I did some research. I found 4.4.2 with NB1 baseband cannot be rooted and it has to downgrade to 4.3 first. So I followed this link:
[NB1►DOWNGRADE★UPDATE◄MK2] ★ [NB1 FULL ODIN] ★ [100% SS ROOTED STOCK] ★ [Mar.23.2014]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2663545
to do so. Everything worked fine. I installed Safestrap-v3.71. Then, I downloaded GOOGLE EDITION 4.4.2 BY Danvdh from (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2537495) and followed this link:
http://www.teamandroid.com/2014/01/...42-kitkat-danvdh-google-edition-custom-rom/2/
to install Danvdh GE 4.4.2. The post said it needs CWM however I was unable to install CWM on my phone so I assume Safestrap should work the same. I used Safestrap to install the zip and got a successful message.
HOWEVER, when I reboot the phone, it just keeps rebooting (i.e., power on, Samsung logo, black, vibrate and reboot again)!!
Please help!!
Oh, I did not flash Loki doki. Is that causing the problem???
I don't think that rom will work with ss. If you have an i337 I think you need a mdl firmware.
Edit, looking at the rom I know it won't work with ss.

OK... if that doesn't work, is there a pure 4.4.2 Android ROM that works with my phone?
Glad I have Safestrap installed and just bought a microSD card reader. I'll try to flash the ROMs from that list...

Given my phone's current status, is there a way to install this ROM? Flash with stock ROM and try to install CWM?

Yes, safestrap. You can not install cwm on your device. You can only use ss and touch wiz based roms. You might have to Odin back to mk2 and start over

Actually, I am able to get into download mode.
I'm downloading the full odin tar files file however... I still could not understand what it is. Is it the MK2 ROM?
nvm. Got it. It'll turn my device back to stock image.
If that works, there is a way I can flash a pure 4.4.2 KitKat on my phone? Or "I337UCUFNB1 100% Stock Rooted ROM" is my best bet?
Thanks!!!

There is a guide below with all the answers you seek young Android flashing apprentice. Please slow down & read it thoroughly before flashing anything. Reading saves phones! If the method or rom you want isn't posted in the guide, it can't be done on your MK2 S4. All the roms that will work on MK2 firmware are listed as well as the way to flash the listed Kit Kat roms too. I recommend you try the At&t roms 1st instead of the international versions. Please thank the op in the threads that help you. Good luck. :fingers-crossed:

You can't flash any AOSP roms with safestrap, only Touchwiz based ones. Your bootloader is locked so it's impossible for you to flash any vanilla android or google edition roms.
The "I337UCUFNB1 100% Stock Rooted ROM" is basically stock GS4 Touchwiz firmware that is rooted.

MF3?

I just got this s4. It has 4.4.2 ota, does this mean I have MF3? If I do have MF3 am I just limited to safetrap recovery ?
You probably have nb1 or nc1. From a terminal emulator on your phone type
su

That'll tell you for sure
In either case you are limited to safestrap

I read a bit. It seems not worth it gonna have to leave the device I get a chance , it stinks because it's for such a silly reason
The guy who I traded my note 2 with isn't willing to trade back. I'm stuck with the s4 it seems. Gonna try to work on this phone today after work . Along the way if I run into issues I'll ask here. Thanks
I just read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2692825 a little bit more. Can you guys tell me if I'm comprehending all these right. So step 2 gets me to MK2 bootloader from NB1 that I currently have. And with the MK2 bootloader I'm able to use the 4.3 root methods indicated in the thread. What's preventing 4.4.2 from being rooted isnt kitkat itself but the NB1 bootloader that came with it through ota, because from the look of it after MK2 "downgrade" I'll still have kitkat?
Step 5, if my final goal isn't just to have stock rooted can I flash a rom of my choice here instead of the stock rom indicated in the thread ? If I am able to just flash another rom in step 5, will I still need the stock kernel in step 6 ? Thank you thank you
Edit: step 3 indicates nb1 safetrap but would I have already "downgraded" to Mk2 tho ?

If you update, you will be forced to use safe strap to boot roms and will lose the ability to flash custom roms and recovery by using LOKI. If this means nothing to you, then there is a flashable ODIN stock 4.4.2 tar file you can download from this forum.
