Sounds like you are not completely stock, the error shows it found modded files in your system partition. Odin the full mk2 tar file first and try again.

I was hoping to avoid doing the full flash again. I have seen some threads of some Nexus 7 members flashing the required files they were so kindly provided so they can move forward to the 4.4.2 update similar to my situation. If I can't then I guess I will have to suck it up and erase her info and start over.

You don't have to erase her info, just flash the mk2 tar file and then install the update. No data wipe required.

Wait dumb question... .. . I take it that the flash won't erase the info due to being an official rom? I mean the one from random45. This has slipped my mind.......

Correct, the tar will not wipe data. Everything will be in tact from random45's download.

I'm not a complete noob,,, Just partially...
Can someone point me to where I can learn how to flash the mk2 tar file and where to find that file...?
I'm have this same issue trying to get KitKat on to my T-Mo S4... Stock... Rooted a few times using the Kingo app on Win 7 - But currently un-rooted.
If I have asked this question in the wrong place, mea culpa.

This forum is for the Sprint Galaxy S4, and it seems you have the T-Mobile device. Here's a link to the tmobile forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-tmobile
MK2 is the version number that is specific to Sprint. T-Mobile may have the same number or not. But all you need to do is download the .tar file for the latest 4.3 ROM that is available for your phone, put the phone in download mode, and flash via the ODIN utility that you can download as well. This is not a complete guide, so see the relevant threads in the TM forum. Alternatively, there may be a T-Mobile .tar for 4.4.2 that you can ODIN directly. It is up to you to see if it wipes data or not. The one for Sprint does.

I would like to update to mf3 but after doing the ota update it reboots to recovery but I now have twrp instead of the required stock recovery...
After doing a lot of searching the only solution I found was to flash the official firmware with odin, but I'm assuming I will have to do a factory reset after this?
Is it possible to replace twrp with the stock recovery without having to do a factory reset or is there another way to get the mf3 update with twrp? (I'd rather not have to re-install all my apps and settings)
I hope my questions make sense its late and I'm tired.

There is always a risk of screwing something up...so read the thread, follow the directions, and decide if you want to take the risk..it's your decision.
Why not just flash a sweet custom rom like omega v9.0? That's the best thing about a custom recovery. It makes it easy to back up your current content and then try out a wide variety of mods and roms.
It's kinda counter productive to flash a stock recovery when you are trying to mod or customize your phone.
Odin is the cats butthole when trying to return to stock. Also, read the poop out of these threads... somebody has done what you want to do already so most things can be resolved with the solutions others have presented.

The OP said he wants to update to MF3. I can't figure out why anyone would willingly do so either, but it is his decision. Personally I would also just flash one of the MF3 ROMs or International updated ROMs and still have the ability to use custom recovery with the benefits (I don't really think there are any) of MF3.

thanks god did not turn my cell into a $600 paperweight :laugh: ... the process worked, but, when I try to do a factory recovery a sign from ATT says, in the top:
Secure Fail: Kernel
and a yellow exclamation with the following message: "System software not authorized by AT&T has been found on your phone. Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest AT&T store for help."
has anyone seen this?

You can flash your recovery with fastboot command:
Code:

Had the same problem, you are probably on MJA (eg. 4.3) and you can't Odin back to 4.2.2 (thats what samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SPH-L720 firmware links are); rwilco12 has the stock MJA firmware that you can flash over modem to get back to stock.
Rwilco stock MJA: rwilco12.com/downloads.php?dir=Files/Devices/Samsung%20Galaxy%20S4%20%28SPH-L720%29/Stock%20ROMs/MJA/Original%20TAR
So just flash with Odin PC and the mja tar too fully revert back to stock? I'm currently running cm10.2 mja

Raidel00 has a thread opened up for mf3 to mj9. I don't know how successful his thread has been since I used the other method (link) you posted and it worked fine for me. But don't you just have to side load it through adb or through SD card? Since your on mf3 you dont have to download the mf3 partial file that I had to download since I was on mj6 correct?

If you do have troubles still when your phone boots and you are rooted use a file explorer to look at the log files in /cache/recovery to see where it failed.

Choose only one. ... If u use 4 files then u need to place it according to image on post #2...... Each file goes to each Odin slot. ...... but if u choose all in one file then only place it on PDA slot from Odin. The others separate files from post#3 use it only if you soft bricked and want to replace certain file ( recovery, boot or modem).Both 4 files and all in one files would wipe your data and apps..... How do I update my phone when it's rooted? I have twrp installed and when ever I go to install the latest update, it goes through the process on twrp and then fails. Do I have to unroot my phone to get the latest update?
I really want to update my phone to 4.4 kitkat but I'm not sure if I can or not because I'm rooted. What do you advice I should do?
Other info:
* Carrier: Sprint
* Model number: SPH - L720
* Stock Rom
* I made a backup of my phone as soon as I got home from picking it up from the store.
Please search. This has been answered before when the update first came up. You cannot be on custom recovery to install an ota. You need to be on stock un rooted with stock recovery. Either Odin MK2 tar or NAE which will be equivalent to the OTA with NAE baseband, software, kernel, and bootloader.

Oin will not wipe your phone. And you don't have to factory reset. Just put grab the NAE tar that is available in the development section. And make sure you have Odin and Samsung drivers installed on your computer. Then follow the OP's instructions on how to use the tar.
Just to be safe you should back up any important data since there have been some instances where the phone after using the NAE tar will hang on the sprint splash screen which requires a factory reset. I hope this makes some sense. I'm still half asleep. Lol

Pardon my ignorance. But assuming you are rooted now with TWRP can you just update OE1 to OG5 and then flash BeastModeStock1.0-N910P-OG5.zip to get root back? or is it more complicated than that.

It is slightly more complicated. If you're saying update with this stock tar, yes but in addition to TWRP and Beastmode kernel, you still need to flash the SuperSU zip to root. And then there's the need to reapply your debloat, getting rid if Knox and ItsOn and any compatible mods.
Or just update with the tar (drag it out of the zip to a folder prior to flash in Odin), Odin TWRP and flash custom pre-rooted OG5 ROM. Not to get technical but you had it right if you add SuperSU zip to your question unless you were asking if you could just flash a OG5 ROM in recovery. I wouldn't recommend that. Clean install is also recommended.
Here's a step by step guide if you have problems.

It's been reported (bottom links) that flashing the OG5 stock tar wipes the internal memory. Try Helium in Google Play or KIES or Samsung Smart Switch for backup and restore.

The OP in this thread points to a faster download for OG5 stock tar.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=62371911

I wasn't sure if userdata applications were wiped or not.
Did you have to do anything special to get Android Pay to work with root? What were your steps and applications used? Standard AP apk or the one recommended for root users?
Or did you just flash stock tar, setup AP and then root?
Trying to get to the root of the issue others have. I hear rooted stock works with AP but others are having issues with custom ROMs.

The end result is the same. It's much faster to just Odin OG5.
