ADM can't locate phone unless screen is on - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have a peculiar issue, and I'm not sure what the cause is. I used to be able to locate my phone through Android Device Manager just fine, and it sort of provided a safety net for me which was quite reassuring. Thankfully, I haven't needed to use it in quite some time, so I just forgot about it. Recently, I stumbled upon it and decided to test it out, just to make sure it was still working fine. It couldn't locate my phone, regardless of how long I waited. So I reach over, unlock the device, and start looking through the settings. ADM was still searching, and within a few seconds of turning the screen on, it located my phone. That's great and all, but if I ever lose my phone and need to find it, I doubt the screen is going to be on by itself (unless someone has found it and is looking through it). Does anyone know what could be causing this? I tested the same functionality on my dad's S3 and it located just fine, so I know the problem can't be with ADM.

WiFi stopped working suddenly

I just picked up my phone and started fiddling around with it, and I discovered that the WiFi just doesn't work right anymore. It connects to the access point just fine, but when I try to go to a website, it acts as though I don't have a connection at all. I have no idea why this is happening, but I recently used ICS Control to replace my internet connection while my modem was messed up, and the phone heated up quite a bit. However, the WiFi connection to my phone was working just fine the whole time, it never disconnected, so I think it's some settings that ICS Control might have messed with.
So, I tried deleting settings the my access point in the WiFi settings screen and reconnecting to the router, but that didn't work. I also tried soft resetting my phone, but that didn't work either. I don't want to hard reset it right now because I don't feel like losing my settings, yet it seems that I might have to try that too. I need some backup software.
I haven't tried using my phone as an access point again, but I get the feeling that'll actually work, so I have no idea what to do. Should I try reinstalling the radio or something? What the hell could have caused this? It just broke on its own.
I bet you have a software problem with something you installed. A hard reset is probably the best choice.
Okay, is there some good free backup software I can use to backup everything, including contacts, apps, settings, etc? I'll do it, but I don't want to have to change every little thing.
Also, the only things that I think could have caused this are either ICS Control or WmWiFiRouter or whatever it's called. I uninstalled the latter before installing ICS Control and I love it, but I dunno if WMWFR might have messed something up.

Crashes/Reboots when using Maps/Navigation/GPS

Hi Everyone,
I'm just received my AT&T Nexus one last night. I'm upgrading from a Touch Pro 2 and was excited to try Android. However, I have already encountered a very troublesome and annoying issue with the phone. After setting the phone up with my Google account I proceeded to start to become familiar with the phone and programs on it. One of the applications I was interested in using was Google Maps and navigation. I opened the application and browsed around the map for about 30 seconds until the phone spontaneously rebooted - showing the 4 color X logo for about 2 minutes and then continuing to boot into the operating system. I wasn't sure what happened so I tried to continue using the phone as usual, but this quickly became rather frustrating.
I had been able to use all the other applications on the phone without any issues. However, any time I opened the Maps application for about 30 seconds or so the phone would reboot. Sometimes it would come back into the operating system but other times it would sit at the 4 color X screen for at least 5 minutes before I pulled the battery to reset the phone. After this happening a few times I decided to try a factory reset on the device. Again, after this had finished and I used the maps application the phone rebooted after about 30 seconds of use.
This morning I was hoping my luck had changed and I wanted to see how the navigation application worked. I set the phone up to navigate to my workplace and began my drive. However, as I feared, the phone promptly rebooted after about 30 seconds of use (those 30 seconds seemed promising, if I could actually use the phone). The operating system came back up and I decided to give it another shot. Unsurprisingly, the phone once again rebooted after about 30 seconds of maps/navigation use. Even more frustrating, upon reboot the connection to the cellular network does not always come back online. Sometimes turning off the phone and turning it back on again works but other times I have to power off the phone, pull the battery and SIM for at least a minute, and try again.
This problem is extremely frustrating since the rest of the phone seems to work properly. I can use all of the other applications, send email, SMS, make calls - all the other things I would want to do on the phone. However, the maps and navigation feature was a huge draw for me to this phone and I am very frustrated that it is not working properly. While trying to figure this issue out I have already done 4 factory resets and even tried using the maps application before setting up my Google account, but I have not been able to find anything to keep the phone stable while using maps/GPS.
As of right now the phone is sitting back in the box ready to be shipped to Google/HTC/whoever support (if they ever get back to me). This is one of the most frustrating experiences I've had with a phone, and coming from a Windows Mobile user that's saying something. I tried to do a lot of searching online but couldn't find anyone else who had the same kind of problem that I was reporting. I have two friends who also own N1's (on Tmobile) and they have had nothing but great experiences with them. Does anyone know of what could be causing this issue and any way to fix it?
Thanks in advance!
That is crazy! Sounds like a bad lemmon... more likely the maps program didn't install correctly when it was flashed at the factory... have you tried using it with GPS turned off? This would isolate the issue to whether it is the maps app, or the GPS unit itself.
In either case, I would have the phone warranty swapped. Even if you could just re-install Google Maps, and it would be fixed, I would still be worried it was something more substantial. If you wouldn't be worried, and a re-install of google maps fixes it and that is good for you, there are places to get the .apk for google maps. I am at work, so no link is possible to a download for the google maps app on my end right now.
I agree that there is probably something wrong with the hardware. I did notice that there was a maps update available in the marketplace (sometime between the 2nd and 4th factory resets) but upgrading didn't seem to make a difference. I have contacted both Google and HTC support hoping that they will offer me a replacement device. However, I'm worried that the US holiday on Monday may slow my progress on the issue.
Thanks for the tips anyway!
Welcome! I would just demand that they declare it Dead On Arrival... that way they will ship you a brand new unit, then you return yours in the pre-paid packaging they send you. You probably won't get it until Tuesday/Wednesday because of the holiday.

[Q] Dock app no longer works

I have a non-rooted Droid 2 and the Desk/Home dock. When I first tried it out, it worked as expected--starting the home dock screen when placed in the dock. However, I now find that whenever I dock the droid, the notification bar shows that it is connected to the multimedia dock but it does not start the dock application. I used Astro to browse the /system/app folder and found a file Dock.apk- clicked on Open App manager and then Launch at which point I get a message saying "Activity not found com.motorola.dlauncher". I am assuming this is related to why the dock app is not running when the Droid is docked.
Can anyone PLEASE tell me why this suddenly stopped working (related to trying to see if a magnet next to the phone will do what the dock does?) and more importantly, what I can do to get it working again? I do not want to do a factory reset as I have spent all too much time getting apps loaded and configs setup. The app appears to be there but it won't run.
THANKS.
Sounds like maybe you removed a necessary apk from the phone, something that contains the missing activity...
I agree that is what it looks like but unless an app can do that on a non-rooted phone, I don't know how I managed to do that. Also the dock.apk seems to be there (unless it is damaged in some way). So now , the question is how to further narrow down what is missing or damaged and how to repair it.
You probably installed another app/program that changed or disabled that functionality. Hard-reset. Try again.
Given how much effort I have expended getting this Droid to where I want it, I would really like to avoid doing a factory reset. I don't know of an easy way to backup all of the apps and settings so that they can be restored (as is possible on the iPhone) unless the phone is rooted. Can anyone suggest what I might try doing other than a hard reset (which is the Verizon answer to any problem they can't solve).
Thanks.
OK... You said that when you load it in the dock, the notification bar indicates that the dock has been detected... So what happens when you drag the notification bar down and tap on the "Multimedia Dock" notification? Does the Dock app load, or does it give you the error at that point as well?
I don't believe this...I have a feeling that you were about to actually solve this problem because after trying to get this to work innumerable times, I just put the Droid in the dock to tell you precisely what the message was ("Multimedia Dock Detected" and when I tap on the notification, " Activity com.motorola.dlauncher not found") and low and behold it started working again. Very strange (unless VZW is doing OTA changes that somehow repaired the problem. I think that it knew you were going to tell me how to fix it
Thanks!
well, I didn't have an answer for you, merely going to try and help troubleshoot a bit. Glad you got it figured out.... Did you do anything to it since the last time you tried? Reset the phone?
If you had a rooted phone, there would be lots more that we could have tried, such as moving files and checking permissions...
Hope you are enjoying your Droid, despite this problem....

A few problems im having with WP7

Hello, I have a few problems im wandering if people know how to fix.
1. Before i put WP7 on, i had the ENERGY rom, and when ever i start up my phone, i always get the energy logo show for a few seconds before MAGLDR screen shows. Any way to change this to the standard I heart windows phone HTC screen?
2. My next problem is i believe with my SD card. I have a 16GB sandisk card which seems to work, and ive had very good random IOPS speeds, however after installing an application, i get a huge slow down, anything on the menu is slow to load, including settings, zune etc.
Allot of the time, when i go to start a downloaded application, it closes and goes back to the menu screen, i try again, and again, and then eventually it works... Sometimes i give up and it never works.
Now, what i want to know is if anyone else is having anything similar to this? Because i havent heard much about this issue on XDA.
I know im not going to be able to get a fix to this problem besides the usual 'incompatible SD card', but i believe my card is as compatible as im ever going to get (ive tried 3 others all of which havent worked). so i just wanted to be assured that this is a current issue and not just my card.
3. When using the Automatic speach recognition, it doesnt recognise 'find' or 'search' commands, it only recognises open or call commands.
I am using 7.07392 Yuki's one.
4.Sometimes will say its searching Wifi forever, and never find any networks, even though im standing right next to one! Usually requires a restart, which brings me onto number 5.
5. When switching off the phone, depeending on how slow its been prior, will take any where between 30 seconds, and 2 minuites! After a while i endd up just taking the battery out!
6. After switching off the device or taking the battery out, the automatic clock changes to a completely random time! And there is no way to my knowledge to force it to search for a time over the phone network
I am aware there are a fair few questions, and i would be very greatfull if someone could answer them!
Thank You!
Next time try searching first most likely the SD card but you can try a different build and see if you get the same issues

Restart/Boot Issue Help

Hello all,
I have checked around and have tried some suggestions on the forums, but here's my story in detail.
I bought this focus from an ebay store. Was told aside from physical damage it worked as expected.
I got the device, and plugged it in to charge, after which it turned on no big issue.
Tried setting it up and turned on wifi (no sim or microsd in the phone since I got it). And it first crashed around setting up wifi, but I thought it was because I hadn't given the battery enough time to charge. Left it over night.
What happens is this, when the phone soft-resets (through updating via Zune for eg) it goes into a weird boot loop, going to the samsung logo then off and on again. I've seen the problem before and suggestions and no follow up anywhere to what may have worked.
I tried the suggestion of putting back what would have been the original ROM but still, the same issue.
It happens during updates and anything that would need a soft reset. The phone at times also crashes and restarts itself when using the camera or maps. HOWEVER, when it crashes here, it reboots no problem. And depending on the length of time it's been on or left alone, when I try an update, seems o be a 10% chance the first reboot (the one to download the update to the device) seems to go through, but the next to finalize never does.
I am starting a new topic mainly cuz of the lack of final resolutions and also because my problem extends to these weird crashes in the maps and camera apps (maybe something to do with enabling location?) to see if anyone has any advice.
I have tried the rev1.3 US rom, I have wiped the phone, and such. I would love some help as the seller seems adamant the phone was perfectly fine before sending it off, and while i've escalated it to ebay, I'm still waiting around.
EDIT: Should note also, the phone is easily picked up on Zune, but not Kies. Not sure if that means anything.
I would suggest returning the phone, I'm not aware of any resolution for these issues.
*sigh*, Was hoping there was something I missed in the search. Guy doesn't want to take it back, raising the issue to ebay. Thanks.
