[Q] Dock app no longer works - Droid 2 General

I have a non-rooted Droid 2 and the Desk/Home dock. When I first tried it out, it worked as expected--starting the home dock screen when placed in the dock. However, I now find that whenever I dock the droid, the notification bar shows that it is connected to the multimedia dock but it does not start the dock application. I used Astro to browse the /system/app folder and found a file Dock.apk- clicked on Open App manager and then Launch at which point I get a message saying "Activity not found com.motorola.dlauncher". I am assuming this is related to why the dock app is not running when the Droid is docked.
Can anyone PLEASE tell me why this suddenly stopped working (related to trying to see if a magnet next to the phone will do what the dock does?) and more importantly, what I can do to get it working again? I do not want to do a factory reset as I have spent all too much time getting apps loaded and configs setup. The app appears to be there but it won't run.
THANKS.

Sounds like maybe you removed a necessary apk from the phone, something that contains the missing activity...

I agree that is what it looks like but unless an app can do that on a non-rooted phone, I don't know how I managed to do that. Also the dock.apk seems to be there (unless it is damaged in some way). So now , the question is how to further narrow down what is missing or damaged and how to repair it.

You probably installed another app/program that changed or disabled that functionality. Hard-reset. Try again.

Given how much effort I have expended getting this Droid to where I want it, I would really like to avoid doing a factory reset. I don't know of an easy way to backup all of the apps and settings so that they can be restored (as is possible on the iPhone) unless the phone is rooted. Can anyone suggest what I might try doing other than a hard reset (which is the Verizon answer to any problem they can't solve).
Thanks.

OK... You said that when you load it in the dock, the notification bar indicates that the dock has been detected... So what happens when you drag the notification bar down and tap on the "Multimedia Dock" notification? Does the Dock app load, or does it give you the error at that point as well?

I don't believe this...I have a feeling that you were about to actually solve this problem because after trying to get this to work innumerable times, I just put the Droid in the dock to tell you precisely what the message was ("Multimedia Dock Detected" and when I tap on the notification, " Activity com.motorola.dlauncher not found") and low and behold it started working again. Very strange (unless VZW is doing OTA changes that somehow repaired the problem. I think that it knew you were going to tell me how to fix it
Thanks!

well, I didn't have an answer for you, merely going to try and help troubleshoot a bit. Glad you got it figured out.... Did you do anything to it since the last time you tried? Reset the phone?
If you had a rooted phone, there would be lots more that we could have tried, such as moving files and checking permissions...
Hope you are enjoying your Droid, despite this problem....

Haunted Device?

Hello,
Up until recently my nice new XDA Exec has been great. However, since yesterday it seems to have grown a mind of it's own which has me worried.
It's fine, and then all of a sudden, it goes very strange. The backlight starts to get really bright, then really dim randomly by itself. Then, applications start going odd. For example, the wisbar skinned startbars background disappears, and bits and peices in applications start to stop showing up. This is then followed by the device forgetting what is trusted and what is not. Trying to launch any program or utility results in a '<x> is untrusted, would you like to run' box coming up, even if it's Word, file manager or the most basic settings panels. Pressing yes allows the application to run, but it's very odd.
The first time this happened, I got a message saying there was insufficient power to support 'SD' (sd card?) even though it was on external power and there was no SD card in the device???
A few minutes after, the device freezes, leaving nothing but a soft reset as an option. After doing so, it all goes back to normal and runs fine. I'm yet to find any cause to this and would appreciate any ideas, it seems quite odd to me. It happens when both on battery and external power, so I can rule that out.
Any ideas? This is a relatively new device, pretty clean ROM with a few applications and the TrueVGA modification - however, it ran fine with all of these for a week or so, so I'm at a loss.
Thanks for your time, I would appreciate any ideas or thoughts
Just do a hard reset, all the problems will probably go away.
The solution is obvious. You need to call someone. But who you gonna call?

[Q] Applications keep freezing

I'm not sure it hasn't been asked before, but I couldn't find the topic so far (maybe I haven't searched thoroughly, in this case I apologize). I'm using a DesireHD NAND ROM. So the problem is:
After letting my battery drain to near empty, I tried to turn on my phone for a few times, but I didn't watch the whole boot sequence, I was just surprised to find it turned off again after a while. Then I figured I have very low battery, then i plugged on to the wall charger. Then everything went fine, the phone booted and Sense loaded. I got a few error messages, like: The application (<application name>) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. The only choice was to Force close the application. Then came the first strange things, namely:
- a few applications' icons are shown as stock android package files
- practically no application is functioning, apart from Contacts and some fundamental programs, they all give the error message like the one above.
I guess it has something to do with me letting the battery drain that low, but I don't have a clue how to fix it. I wouldn't like to hard reset my phone, if there is other way.
Thanks for any help in advance!
You should try to fix permissions. If that doesn't work, start to see whether your rom recognizes your sd card. If it does, I would recommend a total wipe and reinstall. Make sure to wipe cache, etc. This should be a last resort though, as you will have to reinstall everything and there is risk involved.
As a last *last* resort, task29. As with the reinstall, risk is involved. If you don't pay attention and do these correctly you may be phone shopping soon.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
I found the Fix Permissions option in the ROM Manager, ran it, and rebooted. Now background processes (Appkik, SetCPU) seem to be working fine, though the icon of Dolphin browser is still missing and some app icons are still shown as android package files, and are not working. This has happened before, don't remember exactly what made them go away, but they somehow disappeared. Thanks a lot!

Strange Issue when connected to PC

Hi guys,
Thanks for all the support and guides posted here, they've been very useful in helping me getting my Kindle rooted and getting rid of the horrible carousel, however I'm having a bizarre problem.
If I leave my Kindle plugged into my computer for a prolonged period of time (I.E to charge it) It seems to reset all the hardwork I've done. Nova launcher completely vanishes from the device as do a few gapps and the stock launcher returns with Carousel etc. I've also made a few edits to the LCD density within the build.prop file and this also seems to revert to it's default settings. Strangely, any apps I've downloaded from the Google app store are still there.
Once these things happen I also seem to lose the ability to copy or edit any files at root. I can view everything but I have to re-root my Kindle in order to make edits or move files to the system/apps folder.
Has anyone else experienced this or know what the issue might be? My Kindle is connected to WiFi 90% of the time and nothing like this happens, but if I leave it plugged into my computer for 30 minutes or more everything resets.
Help? Suggestions?

cdbailey,
I am sorry for the delayed response, we had to go out to an emergency call and got
back an hour ago. Sounds like Amazon sent a software update to your Kindle. Has it
happened more than once? If not, I would mark it up to a Software Update. The
Service is called OTA (Over The Air) Update Service. Look in the Device > About,
what is your software version? If this is not possible you need to send it back to
Amazon for replacement. Remove Google Play before sending it in to Amazon.
This is NOT normal.
Hey that's no problem at all, it was thanks to the help.of your guides that I've been able to get my head around all of this.
The first time it happened my initial thought was, like you said, that my device had received a software upgrade. Unfortunately this has happened a total of three times and each time I've followed my daily routine of coming in from work, plugging my USB from the Kindle into my computer, going back to it a couple of hours later and finding it has all reset.
I don't know if it can be related at all but I have been using a slightly older version of Nova launcher as opposed to GOLauncher like your guide suggests.
Last night after finding it reset for the third time I decided that if so many people were having luck with GOLauncher then I'd try the same. As an experiment I left my Kindle connected to the computer much of last night and so far, so good.
I'll update here if it does happen to reset but I'm still not sure what caused it. Thanks again for the reply.
Okay... literally seconds after my last post I went to check my Kindle for the software version to find it had reset again. This time it wasn't connected to my computer and my software version is currently 7.2.3
Could editing the build.prop file be forcing my Kindle to update itself as it doesn't recognize the contents to be correct?
I don"t recommend editing the build.prop yet till you can back up the device or this may happen

cdbailey,
Although we do not recommend editing the build.prop there is nothing that would
perform an inventory forcing an update. You can edit just about everything in
the Kindle and it would not send a signal to be updated. I suspect the OTA
Inventory Service database is sour, not recognizing you current software
version, thus looping the update. We just posted a new tutorial that
would shutdown these services. Please perform these steps to disable
the update service (Note: You may manually execute the update):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2086450
This will be an interesting experiment to see if it clears up your looping
update service.

Issues with my device crashing

I purchased a Mi 9t a few days ago, and I'm experiencing a recurring issue that I can't seem to solve.
From time to time, the UI will simply crash. I can still see my apps but I can't open them, and the notification bar on top of the display just disappears. I can't access anything and my only solution is to reboot. Sometimes I'll have to reboot multiple times a day, which gets old quite quickly.
Most of the time it seems the issue occurs when I'm trying to go to the home screen, whether with gestures or with the home button.
- At first I thought it was a conflict between the gestures in Nova launcher and the gestures of the phone. Turning them off in Nova didn't fix it, so I tried to disable the phone ones and started using the navigation bar, but it didn't fix the issue either.
- I did clean Nova launcher's cache along with the system launcher's one, didn't fix anything.
- I tried to do a full factory reset, it didn't fix anything either.
- I tried to disable the search bar, didn't fix it.
- I tried using another launcher, didn't work.
- Using the system launcher didn't work.
I'll add that my phone and apps are all up to date.
I didn't find anything helpful on the internet, and now I'm out of ideas. Is it software, or could it be hardware ? I can still send the phone back and get a replacement, should I ?
Thanks for your input !

Hi there,
When you did a full factory reset did you start from scratch or did you import your backup?
If you did it with your backup once you were setting up your phone again, it may be some app that you have recently installed.
If you did factory reset (without restoring your backup) and still experience the same issue it could be Software/hardware issue (software being more likely) and yes you should send your phone for repair or get a replacement phone.
But before you do I would advise you to wait until another software update / Security patch is out and see if that resolves the issue for you if it does it was software issue if it does not it is a hardware issue.
Hope this helps
Thank you for taking the time to write an answer, I appreciate it !
Because of a delivery error I received a second device, so I decided to switch and send back the first one. I also suspected that it was more likely to be software rather than hardware, but thought I'd do it just in case. So far the issue happened once on the new device.
You raise a good point I hadn't thought about. I transferred the data from my old phone to the new one, at first. When I did a factory reset I entirely wiped the data on the phone, however I had backed up my data with Google and the Mi cloud, which I restored.
I think I'll try doing an entirely clean install if the issue persists. Thanks you !

had this issue out of nowhere yesterday, and wasted trying to fix till 2 am, well it seems at first it was impossible as this check happens on google play service internal app, so if gapps is installed its kind of difficult to get rid of it without some hacking with internals. Even after full format and adding crDroidAndroid-12.0-20220214-walleye-v8.2 for my pixel 2 somehow invoked the check, so I went to sleep uncertain if I can get my phone back online. Then in the morning I tried lineage-18.1-20220208-recovery-walleye.img instead following same install instructions as droid and for whatever reason it didn't got the same threatening notification that your device gonna be reset in 2 hours. So for now the issue went away maybe because of the OS or maybe it just expired? Not really sure, but happy that lack of sleep I guess paid off.
