[Q] Need Advice- phone screwed up- what model is it? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I bought what was described as a refurbished i9500 off of ebay. The phone itself looks to be genuine when compared to my i337.
In the About Device section, it is listed as a GT-I9500. The sticker on the back says GT- i9500, but according to the IMEI, it is listed as i337 Galaxy S4. Here are some interesting points: it has Snapdragon 600 processor, and it connects to the 4G LTE network on At&t. When I ran a factory reset, everything was in Chinese. After changing the language to English, the calendar still has the lunar calendar locked in and two Chinese calendars that I can't delete. Also, there were two Chinese apps that appear after the reset (that I deleted). The phone seems to work fine- my wife is using it, but I don't like the fact that things don't match up. I tried to update software in Kies, but it says it is updated (has 4.2.2), and it lists the phone as a i9500. I don't know much about phones, but is it possible that someone loaded i9500 firmware on i337 hardware? If so what is the best /easiest way for me to correct this?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Put ur phone in DOWNLOAD MODE:
- Firstly, power off your Samsung Galaxy S4 totally and after that remove its battery and keep it out around of 10 seconds.
- Secondly, Re-insert the device’s battery back in its specific location.
- Thirdly, press and keep holding the following combination of buttons: Volume Down, Home and Power buttons simultaneous.
- Now, when the ‘Warning!!’ message will be displayed release the buttons.
- After you released the buttons, press Volume UP button, for confirming that you want to enter into Download Mode Menu.
Attach here what appears (ur phone is a clone if the letters appears in chinese) :highfive:

Here's what I think I can read (it's small) in the top left corner:
ODIN MODE (in red text)
PRODUCT NAME: SGH-I337
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official
SYSTEM STATUS: Official
CSB-CONFIG-LSB:8x38
Write Protection: Enable (in gray text)
In big letters below the android- "Downloading... Do not turn off target!!"
No Chinese- That's a good sign- What next?

You have an i337 dude.
By the way, it's perfectly fine to hold power button and turn off device.
It just says don't in case you're flashing firmware with Odin or Kies

One XDA member had same problem: HERE
You have 2 options under my point of view:
1. Let it how its if the phone runs ok.
or
2. Flash the firmware SGH-I337 through ODIN if the phone becomes to do weird things: This ONE (This method may brick ur phone forever, do it by your own responsibility).

Thanks for the link to someone else with a similar issue. I tried doing a search but couldn't find anything. Maybe my search terms were wrong. The phone has been running OK. It has a few quirks compared to my I337.
It says the firmware is up to date, although it is 4.2.2. Even with kies, it will not upgrade to the latest firmware. My wife is happy with it as is, but I feel it should have the proper firmware to match the phone. Is it really that risky to flash the firmware through ODIN? Also, if I do that, will I lose all information on the phone- texts, settings, etc.? I would have contacts and images/videos on a separate memory card. Also, do I need any other files- I see some videos on youtube where people are using the firmware plus some tar file. Some of these videos claim that their methods will unbrick or unroot a phone. If I try to flash the firmware and it doesn't work, will I be able to unbrick the phone? I don't want to ruin a quirky, but working phone.
Thanks again for the help.

I see everyone put huge "do this at your own risk, you may brick your phone" warnings when suggesting flashing the firmware. Just how much of a risk is this, if I follow the instructions exactly? Also I see videos talking about "unbricking" your phone. If I do brick it, will I be able to unbrick it? I would like to put the correct firmware on the phone, but I don't want to ruin it either.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Repair your I9100G Samsung Galaxy S2 which has been flashed with wrong firmware

Hi Guys,
I've bought a GT-I9100G, flashed it with an original I9100 rom and the phone was bricked by the wrong firmware. After that, I couldn't flash it with the right firmware neither.
I have spent a whole day to figure out the problem and I have found a guy, who had the same problem earlier.
He told me what to do:
Warning! Use this description at your own risk! I can't guarantee that your phone will be alright. If you are brave, just give it a shot.
1. Download the required files:
-In case of the blocked file servers, the pit has been uploaded to a reliable Hungarian site-
Odin 1.85:
Odin 1.85
TI OMAP 4 .PIT FILE:
PIT for I9100G Samsung Galaxy S 2 II

The stock ROM:
Go to http://www.sammobile.com/ and find a rom for your device (rembember, you have to look for I9100G firmwares not for I9100 ones)
2. Repartition with Odin
Turn off your phone and remove the battery.
Put it back and Press these buttons in this order:
Volume Down + Home (Menu) + Power Button
After that, you will see this:
Now, press the Volume Up button.
Your phone is in Download Mode now.
Connect your phone in this mode to your PC. It will install a few drivers, just wait patiently.
After the installation, you have to see this:
Now, browse the downloaded .PIT file to its place.
Check the re-partition box and press START.
When it finished, detach your phone.
3. Flash the new Firmware
Browse the downloaded firmware to the PDA section in Odin.
DO NOT CHECK THE RE-PARTITON BOX THIS TIME!
Hit the flash button and wait patiently.
When it finishes just enjoy your SGS II!
If you don't understand something, just ask in the thread or send me a private message.
I'll write some keywords here, so Google can find this thread easier:

Yes, exactly.
First of all, make a repartition with Odin. Check the Re-partition box and browse the PIT file.
Click on the START button.
After it finishes, browse the rom file to the PDA section, and click START again.
This method worked on my phone.
Good one, hope I don't have to use it
Hi! suffering from same probelm. My phone doesnt go into boot mode and a yellow triangle keeps flashing. How could i use the PIT file? any step by step guide available?
Thanks!
I have made a more accurate process description.
Hello,
I once had the same problem and wasn't able to go to the download mode, I had the image of a PC and a phone on my screen and when removing the battery the phone goes off, and when I put it again and turn it on, automatically I found my self on the same screen without being able to do anything. I had no choice but send my phone to be repaired !
Archive PIT
I have read in forums that the android Archiving PIT would not be necessary, is this true?
Rats, thanks to hotfile being made entirely out of fail and megaupload being seized by the feds this guide is of no use to me as I cannot get hold of any of the files needed to repair my phone.

That's download mode... It's "forced download mode" - phone is telling you that you HAVE to flash something in Odin or you're not going anywhere.

what about flashing wrong kernel? What should i do? I've flashed the i9100 kernel, mine is i9100G
I've made it too, but it's not a problem. If you have download mode you can do everything.
Just follow the steps in the first post.
To the others:
All of the files have been uploaded again. Please contact me if something goes wrong with them.
Good luck and have fun!
Thanks a lot for this post.. was great help to me...
However for those who can't get to download mode using the VOLUME DOWN + HOME + POWER KEY combination, this worked for me..
Disconnect your phone from usb cable
Remove the battery and place it back again
Press the VOLUME UP + VOLUME DOWN KEYS SIMULTANEOUSLY and without releasing them,
Insert your USB cable...
if it shows a phone connected to a PC with a yellow triangle between, and ODIN recognises it, you are good to go.
Just proceed with the instructions from ToMmY_hun
That is how I fixed my SAMSUNG GT I9100G.
this post helped me out so much big big thanks

The PIT is useful in order to clean deeply your device, so if you have lag, brik or freezing the PIT guarantees a better functioning of the system.
If you don't have any problem, you can avoid the PIT and simply flash the rom
Amazon.de ships 9100G !
Hi,
I just had the same problem. Today my new SGS2 arrived from Amazon.de
I flashed a LA2 based I9100 Firmware (CF-Root-SGS2_XI_ITV_LA2-v5.0-CWM5)
I flashed only the PDA Part in Odin without any other changes in Odin, thinking that I can boot afterwards in CWM and install a CustomRom.
My phone was stuck at the Galaxy S II Bootscreen with the yellow triangle.
Afterwards - I know, a little too late - I realized that my retailer sent me a I9100G (with a german LA1 2.3.6 Firmware) instead of a I9100!
So I downloaded an original 9100G Firmware from sammobile.com. Unfortunately there are no european firmwares available for the 9100G, so I had to use the only 2.3.6 Firmware I found I9100GJPKK1 (United Arab Emirates).
I started Odin, didn't change any of the checkboxes and flashed it (only PDA). Everythin is working right now but I want to exchange it with a 9100.
I'm not sure if I can return the Handset to the retailer. It was his fault that he messed up the phone models but now I have a mobile with arab emirates firmware that does not support german.
Hope my little journey helps somebody...

Hi, I have the same issue, I've tried updating to the latest stock software using odin but still does it, doesn't seem to affect the unit but I wonder if there is a way to stop it from happening, did you find out how to prevent it? The KNOX is still 0x0 and I haven't rooted it and it shows that it is BTU csc. It flashes up immediately after the vibrate on power on from being switched off and then disappears just before the Samsung logo is displayed, it is only there for about a second, I managed to get a photograph of it below. If you put it into Odin mode it also shows under the normal text but it is in a darker grey colour text. It will still go into recovery boot mode and when you do that the blue coloured text shows underneath that writing just before it enters the recovery screen. I've tried clearing cache and factory reset in recovery mode but it always appears no matter what. There must be something I need to update somewhere to get rid of it?

[SM-G9008W] Stuck at Samsung Logo

I created an account here because I need all your help and I've been crawling all over the internet, but I cannot find anything for my problem.
Whenever I charge my phone, I turn it off, shut it off to be exact so that it charges faster. One morning, I woke up and I booted it up, but it won't get past the Samsung logo. It will stay like that for a while, then it will vibrate and will appear at the same screen again. Also, whenever I put the battery on, a green LED will stay on even though the phone is still not on. I cannot access recovery mode, only download mode. My phone is rooted. It has been once submerged in water but no problems. No custom ROMS, but there is a custom recovery that is INACCESSIBLE. I badly need all your help since it makes me feel bad having a $600 paperweight. I have tried leaving the battery out for weeks and almost a month now. Ask me anything and I will try to answer with what I know.
Thank you and I hope for the best. (Cause it made me really sad. :crying,
Robert

Hi *Detection*
Sorry disturbing your wonderful support effort but I would like to provide @hyperfused07 with some links that I consider useful:
To speed up your SamMobile experience, before finding your devices section (that you didn't provide) I suggest using the below tool to perform the download:
[TOOL] SamFirm - Samsung firmware downloader & checker
Just provide Model+Region and it will find you the newer available. Please, before download, check the boxes: CRC32 & Decrypt
Lastest Odin v3.11.1
To use Odin you will have to enter "Download Mode" by pressing: Home + Volume Down + Power buttons
Nice regards.

Actually my support effort was perfectly adequate, if OP had read and followed the instructions I provided in my first post
I don't enjoy having to post the same thing twice, especially if OP won't even read it once, hence my shortened 2nd post

The best way is to boot into download mode. Volume down + power button. If you don't know what it is, you should learn cuz you'll hear a lot of it with Samsung.
To get into download mode, power off the phone, press and hold volume down, home and power buttons. Once the phone starts to boot, release the power button. You'll be greated with a caution screen, press volume up to enter download mode. The model # should be one the screen.
Trying to find the model # from the ROM settings is not always a reliable method.
Combined all the advice I got from the internet when I started out.
Although I am sort of experienced in flashing ROMs and troubleshooting if something goes wrong, however this device is particularly new for me (A week).
So, here's the process I followed to set up my phone with a custom ROM and Recovery:
1. Check your model no. There are several variants of the S4- I9500, I9505, I9506 etc. And we have different ROMs/Mods for different variants. Check your model no. to proceed. You can do so by going to Settings>About phone/device>Model No. or simply take your battery off and check the sticker that is pasted under it.

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
EDIT: As suggested by @Pwnycorn, check your model no. in download mode (Vol Down+Power+Home->Vol Up)
2. Prepare your computer. Find and download all the drivers, Kies, the root files, Odin etc. Install your drivers and see if your computer is recognizing your phone. Always download the stock firmware for your device, so that if anything goes wrong, you will have something to quickly fall back on. A quick tip: Try to use the data cable that came with your phone. I personally faced a lot of problems without it.
3. Root it. I followed this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/general/guide-t3018625 It has several variants of the S4 in focus, plus he has provided all the necessary files you would need for the process. Follow this guide and if you did everything correctly, your device should now be rooted.
4. Install a custom recovery. Well, you probably have already done this in the previous step, but if you haven't, look for CWM/TWRP/Philz Recovery for your specific model. Remember that recoveries are model specific and one recovery wouldn't work for another device it is not meant to be installed on. I am using this for my I9500- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2362838
Flashing a recovery involves critical steps, which if not done right can brick your phone. Read guides before you attempt this.
5. Research about custom ROMs. What ROM do you want to install? What specific features do you want? Is the ROM you like made for your device (Like I love JDC Team ROMs but they aren't for my device). Watch YouTube videos, read about it etc. Here is a video that really helped me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhRdy6BiJBU
6. Flash the ROM you like, flash scripts and mods and set up your phone: Pretty self explanatory. Go through the ROM's development page, and understand the installation process. Install the ROM and any other scripts/mods and you are good to go.

1. Firmware/ROM: It is the operating system your phone runs on. Like a PC typically runs on Windows/Linux/Mac, phones too have such software. They are called Firmware or ROM. In our case, our phone runs on Android.
2. Stock/Custom: Stock Firmware is the OS which came preinstalled when you got the phone. Custom ROM is developed by third party developers and you have to flash them in order to use it on your device.
3. Flash: In simple words: Installing. Flashing a ROM or Recovery means installing a ROM or recovery.
4. Root: "Rooting is jailbreaking for Androids, and allows users to dive deeper into a phone’s sub-system. Essentially, it’ll allow you to access the entire operating system and customize just about anything on your Android. With root access, you can also get around any restrictions that your manufacturer or carrier may have applied. You can run more apps, you can overclock or underclock your processor, and you can replace the firmware." (Courtsey: Digital Trends. http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/how-to-root-android/ )
5. Custom Recovery: Read this very well written guide. http://www.howtogeek.com/193055/what-is-a-custom-recovery-on-android-and-why-would-i-want-one/
6. Recovery Mode/Download Mode: These are special modes you can put your phone in. In recovery mode, using your recovery you can flash ROMs, Mods, create backups etc. You access recovery mode in S4 by pressing Volume Up+Power Button+ Home Button simultaneously. In Download mode you flash files using your computer. Files like custom recoveries, stock firmware etc. You access download mode in S4 by pressing Volume Down+Power Button+ Home Button simultaneously, then pressing volume up when the prompt shows.
I sincerely hope I could be of help to you. You can PM me anytime for any help you need. Good luck and happy flashing.
Forgive me if I have written something incorrect. Let me know and I will correct it right away.
Checking the model number in the about menu or under the battery sticker is the worst idea. Why? Because many S4 phones have been repaired with parts from other S4 phones and are then being sold as new.
The problem here is that models get mixed sometimes and, when trying to root, you end up bricking the thing.
Info in the about menu can also be easily changed. I can change mine to display "Pixel", a trick which is widely used to get Google Assistant on Non-Pixel devices.
Download mode is the only true thing that can't be affected by this. It's like a computer bios, it comes with the motherboard.

True. The repair thing did not cross my mind.

Note 4 failed upgrade and now I only get an error screen.

A month or two ago my Note 4 notified me of a software update being available. I told it to go ahead and install. Once it was looking like it was done and went to reboot itself, I ended up getting a screen that said "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." I called Samsung for support and after troubleshooting they told me to take the phone to the Samsung kiosk at my local Best Buy. The employees there were unable to fix it. I contacted Samsung again and they said they could reflash the firmware for a fee of $70.13 which I was willing to pay since I love my Note 4. I sent the phone in with the battery per instructions, waited for repair, and when the phone came back it was not fixed. Included was a message saying it was beyond economical repair. How did they know how much I am willing to spend to fix my phone? Also they did not return my battery. I contacted Samsung and They DID end up sending me a battery, but told me they could not fix my phone since it had been rooted. I know for SURE it had not because I bought the phone BRAND NEW. Now I am stuck with a phone that will only turn on to an error screen and don't know what to do.
This is what appears on the screen.

Go to sammobile and download the latest firmware for n910p.
Download 'Odin' software aswell.
Extract tge zip thatvyou downloaded from sammobile, you will get a .tar.md5 file.
Then, open odin and click on AP button.
Select your n910p..........md5 file.
It will take time to load, leave it alone, the screen will look as if it is not responding but give it a few minutes.
Once the file is loaded, put the phone in download mode (the one that you shared in the image, is called download mode), connect the phone to pc and press the start button in odin.
Leave the phone and pc for 5-10 min.
Once the flashing process is done, the phone will reboot.
Press volume up+home+power buttons al together for 7 sec, the phone will boot into recovery mode, select the fatory reset option with the volume and power keys.
Then sleect 'reboot system'.
Done.
The phone should not take more than 10 min to boot.

Just download the specific firmware from sammobile and flash it via odin.
The first line says, 'odin mode', that means it will be detected in download mode.
