The best way is to boot into download mode. Volume down + power button. If you don't know what it is, you should learn cuz you'll hear a lot of it with Samsung.
To get into download mode, power off the phone, press and hold volume down, home and power buttons. Once the phone starts to boot, release the power button. You'll be greated with a caution screen, press volume up to enter download mode. The model # should be one the screen.
Trying to find the model # from the ROM settings is not always a reliable method.
Combined all the advice I got from the internet when I started out.
Although I am sort of experienced in flashing ROMs and troubleshooting if something goes wrong, however this device is particularly new for me (A week).
So, here's the process I followed to set up my phone with a custom ROM and Recovery:
1. Check your model no. There are several variants of the S4- I9500, I9505, I9506 etc. And we have different ROMs/Mods for different variants. Check your model no. to proceed. You can do so by going to Settings>About phone/device>Model No. or simply take your battery off and check the sticker that is pasted under it.

}
EDIT: As suggested by @Pwnycorn, check your model no. in download mode (Vol Down+Power+Home->Vol Up)
2. Prepare your computer. Find and download all the drivers, Kies, the root files, Odin etc. Install your drivers and see if your computer is recognizing your phone. Always download the stock firmware for your device, so that if anything goes wrong, you will have something to quickly fall back on. A quick tip: Try to use the data cable that came with your phone. I personally faced a lot of problems without it.
3. Root it. I followed this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/general/guide-t3018625 It has several variants of the S4 in focus, plus he has provided all the necessary files you would need for the process. Follow this guide and if you did everything correctly, your device should now be rooted.
4. Install a custom recovery. Well, you probably have already done this in the previous step, but if you haven't, look for CWM/TWRP/Philz Recovery for your specific model. Remember that recoveries are model specific and one recovery wouldn't work for another device it is not meant to be installed on. I am using this for my I9500- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2362838
Flashing a recovery involves critical steps, which if not done right can brick your phone. Read guides before you attempt this.
5. Research about custom ROMs. What ROM do you want to install? What specific features do you want? Is the ROM you like made for your device (Like I love JDC Team ROMs but they aren't for my device). Watch YouTube videos, read about it etc. Here is a video that really helped me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhRdy6BiJBU
6. Flash the ROM you like, flash scripts and mods and set up your phone: Pretty self explanatory. Go through the ROM's development page, and understand the installation process. Install the ROM and any other scripts/mods and you are good to go.
COMMON TERMS
1. Firmware/ROM: It is the operating system your phone runs on. Like a PC typically runs on Windows/Linux/Mac, phones too have such software. They are called Firmware or ROM. In our case, our phone runs on Android.
2. Stock/Custom: Stock Firmware is the OS which came preinstalled when you got the phone. Custom ROM is developed by third party developers and you have to flash them in order to use it on your device.
3. Flash: In simple words: Installing. Flashing a ROM or Recovery means installing a ROM or recovery.
4. Root: "Rooting is jailbreaking for Androids, and allows users to dive deeper into a phone’s sub-system. Essentially, it’ll allow you to access the entire operating system and customize just about anything on your Android. With root access, you can also get around any restrictions that your manufacturer or carrier may have applied. You can run more apps, you can overclock or underclock your processor, and you can replace the firmware." (Courtsey: Digital Trends. http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/how-to-root-android/ )
5. Custom Recovery: Read this very well written guide. http://www.howtogeek.com/193055/what-is-a-custom-recovery-on-android-and-why-would-i-want-one/
6. Recovery Mode/Download Mode: These are special modes you can put your phone in. In recovery mode, using your recovery you can flash ROMs, Mods, create backups etc. You access recovery mode in S4 by pressing Volume Up+Power Button+ Home Button simultaneously. In Download mode you flash files using your computer. Files like custom recoveries, stock firmware etc. You access download mode in S4 by pressing Volume Down+Power Button+ Home Button simultaneously, then pressing volume up when the prompt shows.
I sincerely hope I could be of help to you. You can PM me anytime for any help you need. Good luck and happy flashing.
Forgive me if I have written something incorrect. Let me know and I will correct it right away.
Checking the model number in the about menu or under the battery sticker is the worst idea. Why? Because many S4 phones have been repaired with parts from other S4 phones and are then being sold as new.
The problem here is that models get mixed sometimes and, when trying to root, you end up bricking the thing.
Info in the about menu can also be easily changed. I can change mine to display "Pixel", a trick which is widely used to get Google Assistant on Non-Pixel devices.
Download mode is the only true thing that can't be affected by this. It's like a computer bios, it comes with the motherboard.

So I got a htc mytouch 4g And it has that phone icon with a triangle and exclamtion mark. I dont know anything about this phone since I have a att captivate From what I read is that if you have recovery you might be able to do it.
Also when I plug in the usb I go into recover and I Get a fasboot screen and other sorts of menus i have put a pd15img.zip in my external sd card and it loads installs It I guess but still boots into the same Icon.
from what I also read is that you can fix this by loading a stock rom pushing into your sdcard via adb but make sure is name update.zip but when I do that I get Invalid Operation.
when in recovery I have this message E:cant't open /cache/recovery/command also phone boots right into that icon.

This is my first time with a phone like this so I'm doing what I would normaly do with a captivate ish
I answered in your other thread here. However, now that you've posted a screenshot, I see that the phone isn't even rooted. I have no idea how you get into a custom recovery without root.
I connect usb while the phoneis off and then press volume up + power and that appears.

Yeah, see where it says "S-ON"? That means the phone isn't rooted. You need to perm root and it install CWM recovery, but with those cache errors you're getting, I'm not sure there's any point since those usually indicate a failed eMMC.
Guess my options are
1. call t-mobile and tell them what happen maybe they will replace it but I didnt buy it with contract I'm att and was going to ask my friend to get me unlock code, But idk if its possible I drop it and theres a crack on the phone
2. sell it for parts...
>.< money down the drain I guess fuggin phone
You're booting into stock recovery by default, that's the "triange". That might happen if you have a VolumeDown key/trackpad stuck.
The error in the recovery is natural - stock recovery expects a command when booted into, but finds nothing.
Check that you're indeed installing a correct PD15IMG that contains a complete system image, and if you are and it still doesn't help - try to shake the phone on the side / upside down, to try and release the possibly stuck buttons. If it doesn't help - the phone needs warranty repair. T-Mobile or HTC directly, your choice. To send it to HTC, you pay the shipping. But in any case it's under warranty, unless it has water damage or something.
download this go into fastboot/bootloader then run the ruu and flash, if after this u still get to recovery than its something else.

That appears to be the Gingerbread leak from the Canadian HTC Panache, but you might want to describe to the OP what exactly it is. Most people won't blindly flash something to their phone without a little info first. Also, could that be flashed to a non-rooted device?
yes thats the official RUU of panache which is glacier inside.
yes u can flash as its RUU.exe u dont need root.
u can even comeback to official mytouch RUU.zip using this exe later if wanted.
because its exe it will reflash everything boot, recovery, splash, radio every thing, thus fixing any problem thats not hardware.

i used this as noted but I get this error
Customer ID error (131) I read on these forums is has something todo with a goldcard?
Edit-
I manage to load a stock rom into a External sd card. it updated it everything pass exept step 8 it skip it and the said finish updateing press power to reboot. Rebooted but the whole (second) mytouch splash was going for a long time. I try to use the RUU.exe and it wont boot into bootloatder just boots and stays on the splash screen.
this is what I get now and is stuck on That screen updating radio
Damn.
That would be the first completely stock Mytouch4G in the forum that has a failed eMMC chip.
Yes, it's bricked, you need to exchange it.
But it's also a good proof that gfree has nothing to do with failed eMMC, extra write cycles of flashing ROMs most probably just speed up the destruction process.
you got one large scratch on screen, how good have you kept your phone? have you droped it badly once or twice?
when you used the RUU.exe when did u get that error, does it go upto where it showed you the rom version?
if u got there than you can try one more time but this time with official mytouch RUU.zip. i'll tell you how to do that, later if u got upto that part.
edit nevermind my post cameback above this
If it shows "Fail-PU" in bootloader - then the eMMC isn't functional anymore. No flashing will help him in this case, only warranty repair.
hmm too bad, feel sorry for him
Hey Guys,
I am trying to return a Galaxy S4 Duos GT-I9502 back to stock, for someone who attempted to root the device, which failed. I am however experiencing some difficulty doing so, and would appreciate some help, if anyone has any suggestions.
This is the screen on the device:

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

}
I am able to put the device into download mode, though I keep getting this error message when I try flashing the device in Odin.
"Complete(Write) operation failed."
When attempting to flash the device, it quickly goes through boot.img, recovery.img and system.img (when it should take longer for each step, and you should see the little green progress bar move), before failing. Does this mean that Odin is having issues writing to the device?
I am pretty confident that I have the correct Samsung drivers installed, and I have tried completely closing all of the Samsung Kies processes on the computer. I have even tried using a different computer, and two different ROMs.
I have tried flashing the below ROMs:
I9502ZNUBMG2_I9502CHUBMG2_CHU
I9502ZNUAME3_I9502CHUAME3_CHU
I have also tried the 'Firmware upgrade and initialization' option in Samsung Kies, though I keep on getting this error message, before it closes (I do not know what it says, Google translate doesn't give a good translation).
"Binary files are not registered U.S. Congress gyeongmu mouth mid-sprocket
Bow can proceed
Please check the binary file registration myeobu"
Does anyone have any suggestion / idea of what is going wrong? Any help would be highly appreciated!
Never mind, I was able to resolve the issue by re-flashing CWM recovery!
same problem
i have exactly same problem with I9502ZNUBMH4 version , does anyone know how to flash this device because i tried 100 time with different versions of odin , and every time i failed repaird it with cwm .
oh and the device won`t do a full wipe , every time i full wiped it my files didn`t deleted ?!
Samsung S4 GT-I9502 root / flash failed - HELP
Hey Guys,
I tried to root my Samsung S4 GT-I9502 (OS Android 4.3), for that I found this website:
http://marrkdaviid.com/2013/08/fix-caller-id-install-google-play-on-the-galaxy-s4-i9502/
But it failed (see more Information below) and I had the following error message and no wifi.
"Complete(Write) operation failed."
When attempting to flash the device, it quickly goes through boot.img, recovery.img and system.img (when it should take longer for each step, and you should see the little green progress bar move), before failing. Does this mean that Odin is having issues writing to the device?
I live in China and I just bought the phone, I needed 5 days to download the necessary files, because most download pages are blocked in China. So I am loosing my last nerve right now.
I am pretty confident that I have the correct Samsung drivers installed. I don’t have Samsung Kies installed. I have even tried using a different computer (Laptops), and two different ROMs.
I have tried flashing the below ROMs:
I9502ZNUCMG2_I9502CHUCMG2_I9502ZNUCMG2_HOME.tar.md5
I9502ZNUEMK3_I9502CHUEMK3_I9502ZNUEMK3_SVA.tar.md5
Someone with a the same problem tried the 'Firmware upgrade and initialization' option in Samsung Kies, but it didn’t work, so I didn’t try. (Here the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2382979)
Instead I tried a recovery. I used Odin 3.07 and the following file:
i9502-cwm-recovery.tar.md5
I got my phone back to work for a while, I reset the phone, just in case. But know I can’t switch the Wifi on and the phone wants to Reboot.
So I allowed the phone to Reboot, I clicked on “reboot system now” and then on “Yes – (I forgot what was written behind the Yes, but I didn’t just click on the normal Yes, I clicked on the Yes - …)
The problem here: The Phone changed to a China Unicom Screen and stayed like that. After 5 h I took the battery out, but I couldn’t restart the phone.
So I did an cwm recovery and know I am afraid to reboot. The Wifi is not working and I can’t find any information about how to fix it.
So please help me. Do I reboot? Can I already install SVA ROM, although I couldn’t flash the Stock Firmware? Do I send the phone back and give up?
Please let me know if you need any other information to be able to help me.
PS: This is the first time that I flash a smart phone. And although I already spent several days now, searching the internet for how-to-dos, tips & tricks, guidelines, Q&As and god knows what, I still do not fully understand what exactly I am doing here. Hence, I would be very happy to receive somewhat easy understandable answers.
Thank you so much for your help!
Anna
Philz 6.00.2
I have a similar problem.
I tried to install philz _touch_6.00.2-i9505.tar, by uisng Odin 3.09
Everything went OK. I got PASS! and my Samsung S4 i9505 rebooted into the stock ROM
However I cannot enter Philz. I tried to keep pressed volume Up + Home + Power but the phone goes immediately into the main Samsung screen. I have tried many combinations...the only working combination is:
volume Down + Home + Power > which leads to download mode (for Odin)
Thank you for your suggestions!

Same problem, how did you fix it?
I have the same issue, how did you fix it? It's been a day that I've been trying to fix it. I've got the Exynos version I9500
I'll apologize in advance for not trading the entire 41 page thread about the update. I started to read through it and saw discussion about a lot of stuff not pertinent to the upgrade.
I just gave my daughter an S4 for Xmas and trying to update from 4.2.2 to 4.3 (AT&T) before she starts customizing (I will factory reset after the update). I've kicked off the update a few times - message has popped each time about phone being up to date in the middle of the download, but download would continue. Then it would eventually freeze.
The really weird part is that the update says it's a 728MB update, but twice I've gone beyond that size (last time was almost 900MB/125% before it died).
What the heck is going on???
I read there was an update after the original 4.3 update and thought maybe it was actually downloading 2 updates. But I also wonder if I'm downloading the 728MB update twice somehow.
Anyone have any tips/pointers/suggestions?
Thanks

The official thread hurts my eyes, trying to sift through 1,200 posts for pertinent information to my situation.
This might be the part where I get in trouble - asking/saying things I might not supposed to on a dev site. But when you start talking about rooting, sideloading - while those are things I could probably do if I put the effort in (I have rooted and put a ROM on one of my tablets), I'm not going to at this time as I think it's ridiculous that I'm unable to update a brand new never been used phone via either OTA or Kies. I'll return the phone unused before I have to do something to it that should be available without a workaround
I'd really appreciate it if someone can comment on how/why I seem to be downloading more than the stated file size.
Thanks
Just downloaded Kies to your computer, plug it in, and update it through there.

Tried Kies - told me that the phone version is updatable (or something like that) via Kies.
Just tried OTA updating for about the 8th time - popped up around 500MB that there's an update available and closed the window I was watching the update download on. Hit update and it acted like the download was still in process - picked up saying it was already at 500MBish. Then download went past 728MB AGAIN, and a short time after told me the phone was up to date (no forced restart to install the update). Now it just popped up that it's downloading an update again - shows 754MB/103%, and it's not increasing.
Getting pissed that I've spent about 5 hours on this thing so far today. Giving up and downloading the file Ted posted and figuring out how to flash the update, since that sounds like I won't technically be rooting or flashing a custom ROM.
I just keep getting more and more frustrated with this thing.
I went through the effort to download the Android SDK on two different machines (it wouldn't launch the SDK Manager on the first one), than had to mess with installing the Java SDK on the 2nd computer because the SDK wouldn't install without that. I finally got the SDK loaded, made sure ADB is installed and running, downloaded the update.zip from Ted's thread, and...
the freakin' phone won't let me boot into Recovery Mode?!?!?!?!?!
I *think* ADB is installed correctly and recognized the phone - I ran 'adb devices' from the command line and it listed the phone. I have tried entering the bootloader myself, and also with the ADB reboot bootloader command. The phone appears to go into the bootloader, but I don't have the ability to do anything - trying to attach a picture of the screen. At the top is just says 'Odin mode' or something.
And help/direction on how to fully get into the mode I need to in order to flash the update?
Thanks

Finally - after about 10 hours working on the update on xmas day, I got it to update and my daughter was able to start playing with her phone.
Thanks, Ted.
Hi,
I bought what was described as a refurbished i9500 off of ebay. The phone itself looks to be genuine when compared to my i337.
In the About Device section, it is listed as a GT-I9500. The sticker on the back says GT- i9500, but according to the IMEI, it is listed as i337 Galaxy S4. Here are some interesting points: it has Snapdragon 600 processor, and it connects to the 4G LTE network on At&t. When I ran a factory reset, everything was in Chinese. After changing the language to English, the calendar still has the lunar calendar locked in and two Chinese calendars that I can't delete. Also, there were two Chinese apps that appear after the reset (that I deleted). The phone seems to work fine- my wife is using it, but I don't like the fact that things don't match up. I tried to update software in Kies, but it says it is updated (has 4.2.2), and it lists the phone as a i9500. I don't know much about phones, but is it possible that someone loaded i9500 firmware on i337 hardware? If so what is the best /easiest way for me to correct this?
Thanks for any help you can give.
Put ur phone in DOWNLOAD MODE:
- Firstly, power off your Samsung Galaxy S4 totally and after that remove its battery and keep it out around of 10 seconds.
- Secondly, Re-insert the device’s battery back in its specific location.
- Thirdly, press and keep holding the following combination of buttons: Volume Down, Home and Power buttons simultaneous.
- Now, when the ‘Warning!!’ message will be displayed release the buttons.
- After you released the buttons, press Volume UP button, for confirming that you want to enter into Download Mode Menu.
Attach here what appears (ur phone is a clone if the letters appears in chinese) :highfive:

By the way, it's perfectly fine to hold power button and turn off device.
It just says don't in case you're flashing firmware with Odin or Kies

One XDA member had same problem: HERE
You have 2 options under my point of view:
1. Let it how its if the phone runs ok.
or
2. Flash the firmware SGH-I337 through ODIN if the phone becomes to do weird things: This ONE (This method may brick ur phone forever, do it by your own responsibility).

Thanks for the link to someone else with a similar issue. I tried doing a search but couldn't find anything. Maybe my search terms were wrong. The phone has been running OK. It has a few quirks compared to my I337.
It says the firmware is up to date, although it is 4.2.2. Even with kies, it will not upgrade to the latest firmware. My wife is happy with it as is, but I feel it should have the proper firmware to match the phone. Is it really that risky to flash the firmware through ODIN? Also, if I do that, will I lose all information on the phone- texts, settings, etc.? I would have contacts and images/videos on a separate memory card. Also, do I need any other files- I see some videos on youtube where people are using the firmware plus some tar file. Some of these videos claim that their methods will unbrick or unroot a phone. If I try to flash the firmware and it doesn't work, will I be able to unbrick the phone? I don't want to ruin a quirky, but working phone.
Thanks again for the help.
Can attach one pic of kies?

I have kies on my desktop- I connected the phone to try to update to 4.4.2. What screenshot are you looking for with kies?

I see everyone put huge "do this at your own risk, you may brick your phone" warnings when suggesting flashing the firmware. Just how much of a risk is this, if I follow the instructions exactly? Also I see videos talking about "unbricking" your phone. If I do brick it, will I be able to unbrick it? I would like to put the correct firmware on the phone, but I don't want to ruin it either.
Thanks for any help you can give.
My tmobile galaxy s7 got stuck on something like bbl error and in the center of the screen the android logo and the sbl error and upload mode nothing else not able to get on download mode or recovery mode totally stuck need help odin not able to flash anything none of the latest firmware nothing,..
Ehat i did was i flash with odin a verizon firmware or something like fof6 combo firmware with the latest tmobile firmware found on androidfilehost.
My phone is now bricked or what i call softbricked i need any kind of help on how to flash or a tool to forcely flash something to unbrick and be able to restore stock firmware any nice developer please help i still paying this s7 and i really want to revive my phone any help will be greatly appreciated?
I'm no expert by any means, just a dude that was in the same position a few weeks ago.
First you'll want to get ODIN, which is your flashing tool:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3804544&d=1467772303
Next you need to find the stock firmware. Lots of sites will have it but 99% of them use some kind of bandwidth throttling crap. The firmware is 4.5gb uncompressed and about 2gb compressed. So if you can find someone hosting the firmware on their Google Drive that's your fastest bet, otherwise it'll take hours or days to download.
The latest firmware at the time of this post is G935TUVU4APIA. You don't necessarily need the latest, you just need to get your phone restored. If there is newer firmware available than what you flash to your phone, when your phone successfully boots you'll get an update to the latest.
Wish I could find a direct link for you but it seems these will always be moving around. That being said search for TMB-G935TUVU4APIA-20160927113301.zip. That was the file I downloaded and it contained the 5 files listed below, which you should extract to your preferred location on your PC:
AP_G935TUVU3APG1_CL8439036_QB10213096_REV02_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5
BL_G935TUVU3APG1_CL8439036_QB10213096_REV02_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5
CP_G935TUVU3APG1_CL8439036_QB10213096_REV02_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5
CSC_TMB_G935TTMB3APG1_CL8439036_QB10213096_REV02_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5
HOME_CSC_TMB_G935TTMB3APG1_CL8439036_QB10213096_REV02_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5 (optional)
The first 4 of the 5 listed above are the important ones. The 5th file, "HOME_CSC...", from what I understand preserves your data should you need to flash over a working phone, but we'll ignore that file for this task. Note the "AP", "BL", "CP", etc., at the beginning of each filename - more on that shortly.
Finally, the home stretch.
* Power off your phone completely. If you're boot looping hold VOL DOWN and POWER.
* Boot into recovery mode by pressing and holding VOL DOWN, HOME and POWER at the same time. Release when you see recovery mode warning.
* Connect your phone to your PC.
* Open ODIN and make sure the phone is recognized. It will show up under ID:COM and have some assigned COM port like 9 or 10.
* Click on the BL button and select the BL_G935TUVU3APG1_CL8439036_QB10213096_REV02_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5 file from your extracted firmware package.
* Repeat this process for AP, CP, and CSC files.
* Once all files are selected click START.
After some time your phone will be flashed with the stock firmware and everything should be back to the way it was when you purchased it. Hope that helps!

Sorry man, I can't read! Missed the part where you said you already tried ODIN.
You may want to do a factory reset first before flashing. I think you hold VOL UP, HOME and POWER to get there. Follow the steps to do a factory reset. Then try ODIN again with stock T-Mobile firmware.
tmobile s7 upload mode

sbl error upload mode

tmobile s7 upload mode
this was the file I flashed before this happens
found it on android filehost under the search of G930T
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=529152257862666887
it may give some directions thanks
Sorry my friend, wish I could help here. It looks like your bootloader is jacked. Did you mean "sbl" instead "bbl" error? I think that's the secondary bootloader. And from the file you linked it appears you flashed the Galaxy S7 "flat" (G930T) firmware onto your Galaxy S7 Edge (G935T). Never thought that would be a brickable operation but apparently so. Unless someone's dealt with this before your only option may be to return the phone and see if they can either reflash it with some other proprietary tool or exchange it. I don't know how to push the stock boot.bin and sbl.bin onto these phones but maybe someone here does.
tmobile s7 upload mode
