Ever since I got my new Galaxy S4 (Fido) the other day my reception has been less than expected. I get 1/2 bars in a room in my house where my previous phone (Motorola Atrix 4G) had full bars. I already exchanged the phone for another S4 and the new one has the same issue. The only constant is my SIM card which I will try and replace, but if that doesn't work are there any reliable radios which can be flashed on the S4? I know for the Motorola Atrix 4G there were some better radios compared to stock which gave me great reception. If this is the same for the S4 can somebody please post a link to the radios I can try? Thanks!
You should flash the modem appropriate for your region. There is a big modem thread in the General section with lots of resources available to you.
Thanks for the reply! Although I can't seem to find the Canada modems for the i9505. Canada isn't listed in the firmware checker link provided in that post. Can anyone recommend or let me know which modems are compatible with a Canadian i9505? The baseband of my phone right now is l337MVLUFNC1.
Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly. I haven't flashed anything on my phone yet, it's all still stock. I'm waiting to flash a new ROM and modem since when I do I can't bring back the phone anymore and as of right now I'm thinking about returning it since I'm having bad reception. If someone can tell me for certain that a specific Canadian modem will give me good reception then I'll be more likely to keep the phone.

1. Your phone is OK if you go outside and you have full signal.
2. You need exchange ur phone if you go outside and you have low signal.
3. Don't ask me again if you can flash other modem. With 3 times is enough.

I heard doing this could possibly erase your IMEI number. Personally, I'd only flash my carrier's modems. Just to be on the safe side.
Its not wise to use other carriers modems, and it will clear the IMEI, but I have heard that it can be done. Kinda of a hit and miss thing, if you are going to pursue it, backup your efs first.

Your welcome, and trust me, do not get into the IMEI restore thing, you talking about a pain, try that once.
good choice. in all the diff radios i have flashed on various phones they gave no more than minimal improvement if any
i thought initially the mf3 radio was better, now not sure

I hope I'll never have to go through that but if I did, can you share the steps? With my s3 (may it rest in peace) a simple "reboot nvbackup" and "reboot nvrestore"command in terminal emulator was all it took, and it saved me many times. Would this also work with the s4?

You're right that has been my experiences with different radios also.
replacing the IMEI, talk about a hardline approach from Samsung.
I remember on my S1 flashing radios from S1's all over the world, Europe, China etc etc
Though thanks for this thread, I was actually wondering about flashing a canadian modem, to unlock AWS and since it's one build higher than the AT&T modem
Just a reminder, it is not wise to run other carriers modems, the modems we have are sufficient to do what you need, and if you find a way, you will not see much of a change if any.
Good luck to all.

Hey man, i am starting to think i would have to flash another variants modem on my s4 m919v because i dont see any modem files for my phone on xda or atleast i cant find many because this variant isnt all that common. What do you think its possible right?
Oh and the reason i want to flash modem is because i want to flash an older modem for s4s that allowed them to be unlocked using the *#0011# code and i cant do that currently. I have heard flashing an older one will allow me to unlock my phone.
Hi there, new to the forums posting but I read here constantly. I have an sm-900w8 note from Telus in Canada. I was running a custom rom before and decided I wanted to go back to stock before the Kitkat release. Anyway, I flashed the rom from sammobile.com that was for my phone (the link said it was for telus and the file even ends in TLS). So I flash it using odin and everything is perfect, the phone reboots and odin is finished. After that I decided I wanted to clear all my data and apps off the phone as well so I did a factory reset. The next time I turn the phone on everything is working (wifi gps ect) but I can't get on the network and it says I don't have a valid SIM. Also I notice the app packages from telus are not the correct ones and one of them is labelled Bell. So I am guessing the site has the bell firmware for telus as well? This doesn't matter to me but I do need my network running. Do you think it would just be a modem problem? Any information would be GREATLY appreciated guys!

The first and most important question: Do you have a backup of your EFS folder?
If so, you'll be happy. If not, prepare for the worst case scenario.

Well, that's not exactly accurate. The phone can boot with a corrupted EFS, but you will get no network access (and no IMEI number.)
It's happened to me, so I know it's possible. It's a common symptom of the OP's issues on Samsung devices.

True, however, OP states that it was Telus FW that was downloaded and flashed...but it's showing BELL.settings, So the probability of it being EFS is low, it's sim locked the device via the BELL firmware more than likely. Reflashing the correct or unbranded firmware will indeed fix it

Well Sammobile isn't immune to mistakes, but it's rare it happens, they're genuine enough.. You could try the modem, first thing I'd do is test the back up and see if it's the downloaded ROM that has cause the issue.
And yes, you can flash the modem via Odin.

thank you but I think I have a real problem on my hands. I looked at my buddies galaxy note 3 and in his settings I could see his hardware version and in mine its blank. I haven't been able to receive any signal on the device since I got it, but on WiFi it works. I know for about 2 hours I had 4G and it it wasn't a strong signal it would go beck to no signal no service. Even when it had full 4G I couldn't place a call, I'd get mobile network unavailable.
I really appreciate the help and I will be sending you thanks when I get home
You may want to try flashing the full stock tar file.

I ended up giving the phone back to the person I got it from and they say that they are going to try and return it to Verizon because it's defective. The only issue I'm having now is I can't find the slip cover that has the IMEI on it. I'm pretty sure its at my house but if not is there anything I can do? Contact Samsung and see if maybe they can send another one I'm not sure.

Sent from my Galaxy Note S5
Hey guys,
I'm new to the forum so please excuse me if this is the wrong place to post this. I'll start from the beginning. I bought a Galaxy S4 (SGH-I337m) from somebody in my city. They said the phone originally worked with Rogers/Fido, but that they switched the logic board on it so now it works with Bell/Virgin. The thing is though, when I put my Virgin Mobile sim card in the phone, it won't let me send texts or make calls. I checked the IMEI and it's not blacklisted or anything.
It says No Service and has the little circle with a diagonal line showing up in the notification bar and when I try to send a text, it says No Network Connection (No signal found for mobile networks). I find it weird because I still get a notification saying that I have an unheard voicemail.
I've tried resetting the phone multiple times. I've also tried flashing both the Bell and Virgin Mobile Lollipop firmwares and that didn't work either. To be honest, I'm not sure how to tell which one I would need to install. I noticed when trying to flash the Bell firmware, that the phone kinda skips to a black screen quickly every time I close an app. I'm assuming that would mean it needs the Virgin Mobile firmware.
That still doesn't fix the mobile network issue though. If anyone could help me out, I would GREATLY appreciate it!!!! Here is a bit of info, I'm hoping it helps. If you need anything else, please let me know.
Model number: SGH-I337M
Android Version: 5.0.1
Baseband Version: I337MVLUGOC4
Build Number: LRX22C.I337MVLUGOC4
Also, in the "Status" menu, I noticed it says:
Service State
Voice: Out of Service / Data: Out of Service
Not sure if that has anything to do with it or if that's normal. Again, if you have any suggestions, PLEASE let me know. I'm super desperate as I can't afford to lose the money I paid for this. Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Coincidentally my girlfriend has a Galaxy S4 of the same model and with Bell/Virgin. I opened up the ABOUT DEVICE menu in both phones and the only other difference I noticed is on hers it says:
SE for Android Status:
"sepf_sgh-I337M_5.0.1_0013"
And mine says "sepf_sgh-I337M_5.0.1_0009"
Does that have anything to do with it maybe?

In all my experience, Bell/Virgin are always interchangeable. Same with Telus/Koodo and Rogers/Fido. I tried putting a Bell sim card in though just now and it still has the problem. It doesnt load any of the signal bars or anything. Oddly enough, when there is no sim card in the phone, the bars show up?

Since it was from Bell, would flashing the Virgin Mobile firmware somehow mess it up? What are the exact steps I would need to take to try to reset it back to stock settings? I'm wondering if I'm missing anything. Or if the APN settings have anything to do with it? I set them to default already and tried adding the Virgin Mobile Canada apn settings as well

Hi there, fellow enthusiasts!
My phone doesn't connect to WiFi when the screen is off. As soon as I turn it on, it's good to go; connects within 2 seconds or so which is great. I'm just wondering why it doesn't connect to WiFi when the screen is off. I've tried every option possible and for well over a year now it just doesn't go thru with screen off automatically. I've switched ROMs, done stock, you name it.
It's annoying to have to take the phone out of my pocket, wake it up, and then check my notifications; it should be doing this automatically. I know it does this with data fine but I don't use my phone like that, I'm a WiFi only kinda guy.
Help me troubleshoot. Any help would be of so much help. Thanks!

From what I can gather the WiFi needs to poll more when the screen is off. Once in a blue it'll connect with screen off (may take up to 2 hours) to a known SSID. I'm not concerned about battery life with more polling, honestly. It'd be way more convenient to not have to turn my phone on to connect to an SSID.
I believe it used to work on 4.4 but I can't be sure. That thread I linked to said the behavior started on 5.1 if that's helpful.

Ok
The issue you are having was a common issue, but no one has that issue anymore. If I remember correctly that issue happens when you are running an old modem on new firmware. The wifi disconnects when you turn the screen off.
You are using a 4.2.2. bootloader and a 4.2.2. modem with a Lollipop rom. Why haven't you upgraded to a Lollipop bootloader and modem?

I don't know which modem since this is the section for the i9505. It's a different model. You can also just flash the latest stock rom.
You have to check here, but at least you know what to look for.

I assume I should use the latest: MF9FirmwareAIO and Odin. I'll be right back.

Same result. Firmware upgraded to latest.
It's not that my WiFi turns off when the phone is asleep. It'll stay on whatever WiFi I'm connected to, but as soon as I am out of range from it, it obviously will disconnect BUT then it doesn't connect to any other WiFi in range unless I turn the screen on first. That thread I linked you to lists the same exact problem.
I appreciate the help.

Your modem didn't update. Try reflashing the firmware you just flashed. Only this time do it twice. So flash it, reboot phone, flash it again.

I was on L720VPUAMDC when I made this thread, then after Odin it's on L720VPUAMF9. That's the latest, no? What do you mean it didn't update? Anway, I'll try again twice.

L720VPUAMF9 = Jelly Bean 4.2.2
So not, it's still a very old modem.

Oh *slaps self* I see. I upgraded the modem to NG2. Still the same issue unfortunately. I really thought we had it this time. What else could it be?

*edit* Actually...IT WORKS! It connects to a known WiFi network when the screen is off in exactly 4 minutes. Much better than before where it was not at all or hours. You've been completely helpful, dude. Thank you. I just have one more question, is there anyway for it to poll faster with the screen off? As in, can I get it to connect to an open WiFi network under 4 minutes or instantly?
