S5 OC - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In several of the kernel threads I see a mention of OC although none that I have tested has actually had this feature implemented. So what I was wondering if there may be something I'm just glancing over without trying it out that includes OC? I got my M8 a couple weeks ago and compared to that the UI just feels so sluggish (I'm sure it's due to the TouchWiz but still I know it can be loads better with just a little bit of tweaking here and there.) I saw a video on YouTube claiming to be Galaxy S5 OC abilities but I'm not sure how true that it is, you know because everything on the internet is completely true. If there is something I am missing please point it out to me.

I'm trying to find a kernel for I can o.c. my Gs5.

[Q] roms and kernals for the transformer

so i just rooted yesterday so far i likey likey, however not a fan of the prime i dont really see a difference so i was wondering what everyone is using as there custom rom on rooted t.f. i am also using a o.c. kernal running at 1.6 ghz. that is the best feauture that i have found.
i dont think any of the devs have got ROMs that are wildly different from stock yet - thats not a criticism of the devs, its just that over time more fixes and improvements and variations will appear.
I tried the Magnus ROM and thats fun if you want to play a bit with fonts. The Magnus 'standard' font truncated stuff a little too much for me but the dev has built in a great new font changer app.
To be honest though i reverted to PRIME.
I remember when i first got my DesireHD.......not a lot was happening in the development section...look at it now.Still early days here.....the good times are coming

Agreed. The development scene on the Desire and then the Desire HD really snowballed and I can see the TF being the 'dev tablet of choice' for the moment ...
Well, fingers crossed anyway
The first ROM i used was modac hr5 and it as nice. Now I have prime although I didn't meant on getting it, but i must say that it works great. It is notably faster then stock, and although there are not many changes on the surface (except this one transformer rom who's name I don't remember) most of them have some cool tweaks under the hood. .
Just out of curiosity, what is it that you are looking for in a rom? I mean, prime does quite a bit of under the hood tweaking which makes it noticeably faster. If you are looking for it to look different, check the themes section.
To be fair, Honeycomb is closed-source at the moment. So.. it's kind of limited. It's even luckier that we even have a custom 3.1 kernel without ASUS releasing the source yet.
Voodoo components are coming for the TF101 very shortly soon! That'll help feed your hunger. If you never used Voodoo Sound (or anything related) you're going to be heavily impressed.

Really strange 'cuz Note, even with stocks, is powerfull in terms of GPU and HW. Are you talking about its reactivity? Flashing other kernels and other ROMS you'd see the fastest device you can find right know, but I repeat, even with stocks I remember it was fast so it's too strange :banghead:

My one works great. It might be your phone... try returning?
My acted the same. On stock rom it was choppy and laggy.
Custom fw solved the issue.
Same here...
Quite laggy and slow on stock firmware once I filled it up with apps.
Custom solved that though. I used Rocket v22, (full wipe when went to that final version along with Abyss 4.0). I got some strange results though, v22 was laggy for me and Abyss 4.2 got me battery drain. Also, Abyss 4.0 sometimes had the tendency to overheat. AGAIN, this is opposed to what most users have reported, so...might just be my phone, the way I use it...I don't know.
I finally found bliss in DarkyRom, with Franco Kernel. Smooth gaming, no lag (yet). Also, I've found ICS Roms to be really really smooth, although I had to go back to GB due to some features missing in these betas.
Thanks guys
Well im wait'n to the ics update..
Does anyone have a clue when its gonna released ?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2 Beta-3
My only lag was in the Contacts,it usually took a long time to open, but a third party application solved it.
As for the ICS its better you check the sticky thread, the Moderater who is a bit temprimental guy could easily delete this thread as soon as he notices that word mentioned any other place than there.
However my personal opinion is that it wont come before the end of June.
Noticed this also. I am coming from an Epic 4G Touch and even completely stock that device was amazingly fast with everything. My Gnote was unbearably slow on the stock KK2 firmware and is a lot faster/smoother on LC1 with Franco Kernel 9. However still not as responsive/smooth as the Epic 4G Touch was for whatever reason.
I noticed that my Note is no as spritely as my old iPhone 4S.. I found after turning on it was better not to rush, pause for a split second and then everything is ok.
Thought so..
Im using startup auditor and now its much faster then before.
Hope that the update in june will fix the problems.. im kinda missing the 4s in teaems of camera quality but the overall performance are great.
too bad that the screen is Pentile based and not Plus..
Hope that the SGS3 will come out soon..
Thanks guys!

Crummy Performance

I fail to understand why the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 performs so horribly compared to my Galaxy Nexus even when the GNex is in completely stock and unrooted/modified form.
My Tab 2 suffers so much graphical stuttering, lag, etc that I can't even stand using it. Some of the initial custom ROM's (Clean ROM and InfectedROM) help with this but it's still so uncomfortable to use!
Does Samsung's additions to Android really suck that bad?
Sorry if this sounds too much like a rant. I just really wasn't expecting such poor performance when seeing the specs. I wasn't expecting Tegra3 performance but damn, I just need things to stop hiccuping and stuttering all over the place.
Yes there Addons do suck up a lot of performance. I can tell when I switch roms.

I've seen some people complaining about the same issues. I would recommend you to just return it and get something else, like an Iconia from Acer. It's weird for me to see people complaining about the bigger model, but so far no one complains about the 7 Incher performance wise.

The stock rom is not optimized at all. The g nexus (which I also have) was built to run andriod 4.0. Thing will get better as time goes on but the roms available for the 10" are not as good as that available for the 7".
What this thing needs is some Franco love. LOL

I have a 7 2 and on the stock touchwiz it is very sluggish compared to a lot of other tabs. Its a lot better when you debloat or run cm9 or aokp. Stock is just to bulky with to many background processes. My opinion if your going to stay stock return it if you think its to slow because it won't get better.
Sent from my GT-P3113 using xda premium
Even debloating the stock and using an overclocked kernel its slow. Aokp and cm9 are the only way to go IMO. I rooted and switched ROM's an hour into ownership. I made sure cm9/root/cwm was out before purchasing. If you dislike the lagging, flash it.
Cars, computers, phones and the like are never left stock for long around here!

As soon as one CM9/AOKP pops up you'll have a dozen to choose from a week later. Patience!
I agree debloating the stock Rom just doesn't help with the performance. Im just gonna be patient and wait for a well developed Rom. Not saying the current custom roms are bad. Much love to all devs that work there ass off

The P5100OXXALD9 stock kernel is a jewel. Sure, I cooked my own ROM, had a bunch of stuff to fix, but the Samsung bloatware is all but gone now and using CM9 apps instead of that bloat helps a lot. The UI is a lot smoother now and I no longer get any frames skipped during scrolling etc.
So, after shaving off 250MB of bloat and tweaking the kernel and the ramdisk just a bit, my P5100 feels like something else. It's still about 40% stock and the kernel is also almost stock, so there is still room for a lot of improvements. For now, it's better than what I expected.
It's not impossible, just a lot of work :-D

I ended up trying your ROM even though I have a 5113 and it is, by far, the best running of the 3. I can accept a few extra useless menu options and a "you don't have a cell phone signal" icon for the added smoothness.
Thanks for your work!

Can touchwiz be uninstalled on a rooted phone?

It's been awhile since I haven't been on pure AOSP. I can't remember if Touchwiz can be uninstalled on a rooted phone or just like an app or is it hard coded in the OS.
Lag on such a powerful phone should be embarrassing to Samsung!
Thanks.

It's not an app. It's built into various parts of the OS as far as I know. I have no lag though so I'm always surprised when people mention lag. Actually, to clarify I have seen some lag since I started doing some tweaks and mods posted on here but they usually clear up after a few reboots. OS seems pretty self-optimizing to me. But again, I always say this, lag depends on what phone/OS you are coming from. Someone coming from AOSP will probably notice lag where as someone like me coming from a stock S3 finds this much faster.

Depends on what you mean by TouchWiz. If you mean just the launcher, it can be frozen/disabled or removed. But the hooks of the TW framework go deep because a lot of the features in the ROM depend on it. TW can be tweaked, and various unused RAM wasting TW related services can be frozen/disabled. On my previous S2 and S3, I ran custom tweaked TW ROMs with Nova or Apex launchers that were as smooth or smoother than AOSP/AOKP ROMs. Once the bootloader gets unlocked on the AT&T S4 and the devs get to do their stuff then things will get better. Who knows, the lag could just be the result of a kernel governor that needs a little tweaking. These days, running AOSP will make you lose a lot of the features that the manufacturers are putting into their phones. Of course whether or not someone would consider all of these new features useful or gimmicky is another story entirely.

Thanks, Yeah it's nothing substantial but noticeable to me. Just scrolling from page to page on the home screen it's just a little jerky, poweramp has skipped a few times, stuff like that. hopefully a root and de-bloat will help.
Over 1 gig of ram is comsumed just with the phone idle and no open apps. I know Android will manage memory well when needed but shesh.

Have you turned off all animations in developer settings? My phone didn't lag, but doing that made it even faster.
TW is so integrated into the ROM you really wouldn't want to uninstall it. Stuff just wouldn't work.
Just be patient and wait for our awesome devs to put together a custom ROM for this wicked cool phone.

Solution to a lagless device

I know I should have posted this in the q&a but maybe we could have a discussion on the matter.
So as we know, this phone is one of the lagless devices I've ever had and I've had quite a handful of phones recently so I wanted to know your opinions on what do you thunk may be the reason. I know HTC dedicated about a fourth of the ram to hardware and I think that helps a lot. Do you think it's that or just plain old optimization?
From the way I see it, I think it's a big help from the hardware ram but lots of credits due to optimization. What do you think, why do you think so, and what are your views on hardware marrying software?
It's down to both hardware and software optimization, looks like HTC's Sense 5 has been built from the ground up to work with the new processors and Android JellyBean. They've done a great job stripping down the unnecessary bloatware and complicated options. They have refined the software to a point that everything just snaps.
For the first time since Sense first got released, I actually prefer this to stock Android. Love Sense 5

I agreed. It's butter. Had a gs4 for almost 2 weeks can't never compare to the smoothness of the HTC one.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 4 Beta
did not notice any lag on InsertCoin 3.0
HTC have done a solid job on Sense 5 but I also think it's down to not including a bunch of useless software (like on the S4) and sticking with the tried and tested 4.1.2. I hope 4.2.2 and above are just as non lagging and stable. I can't believe how stable this device is.
Sent from my HTC_PN071 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
It's not so much about this or that, but it's just that Samsung for whatever reason has not fully implemented Project Butter, the biggest feature for many for 4.1 The S3 didn't have as much bloatware as the S4, but when the One X and S3 got updated to JB, the difference was night and day on the One X, while it MOSTLY stayed the same on the S3.
true story, project butter fully implemented even on the One X JB
equally HTC is known to use higher speed internal storage mmc
and of course the whole Sense 5 light thing and being optimized specifically for the s600 (unlike the s4 exynos and s600 duality)
lets just say its a very clean job
regarding 4.2.2, it's even smoother after the OTA especially the app drawer
Dont know if anythings wrong or the reason that im using the power save mode all the time.......my phone lags a bit at times, any other conclusion anyone??

My last samsung was the sgs2, which could be perceived as laggy but in reality wasn't, some of the perceived lagginess was caused by design decisions (eg home botton lag, which was so multiclick combos can be done).
Try another (generic, not specically optimized launcher) launcher on a Galaxy phone and see it not lag at all....

Itd *could* be powersaver if your cpu limit is set. It will limit the cpu speed between 384-1134mhz when its on. 384-1727mhz when its off. Also, if you have alot of apps running in the background using *cpu* that *could* be it too....
