I fail to understand why the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 performs so horribly compared to my Galaxy Nexus even when the GNex is in completely stock and unrooted/modified form.
My Tab 2 suffers so much graphical stuttering, lag, etc that I can't even stand using it. Some of the initial custom ROM's (Clean ROM and InfectedROM) help with this but it's still so uncomfortable to use!
Does Samsung's additions to Android really suck that bad?
Sorry if this sounds too much like a rant. I just really wasn't expecting such poor performance when seeing the specs. I wasn't expecting Tegra3 performance but damn, I just need things to stop hiccuping and stuttering all over the place.
Yes there Addons do suck up a lot of performance. I can tell when I switch roms.

I've seen some people complaining about the same issues. I would recommend you to just return it and get something else, like an Iconia from Acer. It's weird for me to see people complaining about the bigger model, but so far no one complains about the 7 Incher performance wise.

The stock rom is not optimized at all. The g nexus (which I also have) was built to run andriod 4.0. Thing will get better as time goes on but the roms available for the 10" are not as good as that available for the 7".
What this thing needs is some Franco love. LOL

I have a 7 2 and on the stock touchwiz it is very sluggish compared to a lot of other tabs. Its a lot better when you debloat or run cm9 or aokp. Stock is just to bulky with to many background processes. My opinion if your going to stay stock return it if you think its to slow because it won't get better.

Even debloating the stock and using an overclocked kernel its slow. Aokp and cm9 are the only way to go IMO. I rooted and switched ROM's an hour into ownership. I made sure cm9/root/cwm was out before purchasing. If you dislike the lagging, flash it.
Cars, computers, phones and the like are never left stock for long around here!

As soon as one CM9/AOKP pops up you'll have a dozen to choose from a week later. Patience!
I agree debloating the stock Rom just doesn't help with the performance. Im just gonna be patient and wait for a well developed Rom. Not saying the current custom roms are bad. Much love to all devs that work there ass off

The P5100OXXALD9 stock kernel is a jewel. Sure, I cooked my own ROM, had a bunch of stuff to fix, but the Samsung bloatware is all but gone now and using CM9 apps instead of that bloat helps a lot. The UI is a lot smoother now and I no longer get any frames skipped during scrolling etc.
So, after shaving off 250MB of bloat and tweaking the kernel and the ramdisk just a bit, my P5100 feels like something else. It's still about 40% stock and the kernel is also almost stock, so there is still room for a lot of improvements. For now, it's better than what I expected.
It's not impossible, just a lot of work :-D

I ended up trying your ROM even though I have a 5113 and it is, by far, the best running of the 3. I can accept a few extra useless menu options and a "you don't have a cell phone signal" icon for the added smoothness.
Thanks for your work!
I have been loading most of the patchwork JB Roms that have been popping up here. I like some things about it, like Google Now, but I cant seem to understand "project butter." I cannot tell any real difference in smooth-ness. It still seems pretty laggy on my NS4G. I am hoping this is because either I have been using a newer device as my daily driver, or just that these Roms are hacked from other releases.
Does anyone else feel this way? What are your experiences with devices like the nexus 7 that were designed with JellyBean? smoother? same?
Nope I can see the difference its faster & smoother than ICS open app draw opens fast in ICS it took a little longer jellybean is the best OS update from Google so far 2 big thumbs up & I'm getting the same or a little better battery life than I was on ICS

I can definitely see a huge difference it terms of smoothness. You should probably delete some apps you don't need or do a factory wipe.

I mirror your experience, however am still hopeful that when Sprint releases the actual files, things will be better. I haven't experienced JB on any of the newer devices, but the reports are good. Life is all about expectations ... guess we should be thankful that we're even receiving the updates.

FYI---it is VERY hard to understand you without any punctuation.
You still should keep in mind that we're on a 2 year old device... yeah yeah the original Nexus S came out in Dec 2010... not quite 2 years, but it's based off of tech that debuted in the original Galaxy S in the summer of that year. It's great hardware, but it's expected that we'll have a tough time dealing with newer OS' ... quite frankly I've considered going back to a stripped down CM7 just because of the smoothness compared to ICS (and JB) ... we're just running into serious RAM limitations on this device.

Try different kernels as well with the rom.
I definitely see a difference,
I have no more lag at all with what i used to before.
I think, the UI can be a bit smoother, but multitasking and opening/closing apps works smoooooth!
Much faster and smoother than ICS.
Running Jelly Belly 1.5.1
Don't expect 2 much from old device like nexus s.
Google is getting sued for project butter being "too smooth" by apple because apple claimed smoothness was patented.
Kidding,
But, I could see it happening.
JB is 3 steps ahead of any other OS :x
I am on jelly bean. I want to ask too why browsing in chrome is laggy? Opening apps and switching between apps is smooth though, but I dont feel that only switching and opening apps constitute the project butter.
I just don't like the fact that it keeps the phone awake over night. You ask me jellybean trying to do too much in the background. Last night I turned off 3g. When I woke up someone sent me a mms at 12am. When I check the battery stats it kept my phone awake trying to download a mms without data on. Not to smart

JB gave new life to my NS, definitely the smoothest it has ever been, and I don't feel the need to OC. As I do with all phones/roms, all transitions and animations are turned off, including the third one added with JB. Also using Nova launcher, but am going to try Apex again now that they updated it with JB base.
And the biggest thing I noticed is how quickly the recents come up now, it's instant. I honestly didn't think that would be possible on the NS.

Why don't you try setting animations to 0.5?

Battery is almost always better with stock, while AOKP seems a lot faster(no touchwiz to slow it down) and smoother. I for one have always been a fan of CM, but lately I have not really felt the urge to go over to CM, as the stock rom comes with a lot more features and is pretty smooth(enable GPU Rendering and HW Composer). The clock, camera, motion controls etc. makes it a lot more difficult to switch over these days, but one should always try it out for oneself before making up one's mind.
I agree, I wanted a phone I could put CM9 or CM10 on but all the Samsung goodies are compelling and I find myself waiting on the next stock leak and not interested in CMx at all.
i wish beats audio would work on JB
I agree with all of the above. I love CM and AOKP and their unique set of features and vanilla goodies, but Samsung have really done a number on the S3! I find myself flashing the latest leaks almost straight away. They've just included so many useful features into the OS that I've become reliant on that, while I certainly prefer the vanilla look and speed, I don't want to sacrifice such genuinely useful features for it.
Except S-Voice of course, Lloyd* only knows what convinced Samsung it was going to be of any use to anyone - didn't they try it for themselves first?
Mind boggling to say the least. I do have to say though, the latest AOKP build looks mighty interesting with its tablet UI feature - wonder if it's done in a similar way to ParanoidAndroid?

The latest experimental build from Codeworkx is definitely faster than stock dli8, and smoothness ia pretty much on par. Still a couple of bugs to iron out, but once it gets to a stable release I could see me switching over for good.
With SGS1 and 2 I used CM until ICS leaks come out, since then it is not worth the performance "difference", comparing with what we loose
First thing I do is install GO EX launcher and delete TW

TW launcher is and TW framework are different things. Deleting the seclauncher.apk and using go launcher does not make any difference over the whole rom.

It's available in the CM10 thread. I would advise you to read the instructions before flashing CM10, as it is not exactly like flashing a Samsung rom.

That's why I love Vertimus and Domination Theme! Best of both worlds, for the most part. We just saw a post that said JB 1.3.1 will be showing up sometime this week.
If you want battery, I would recommand using the FoxHound Rom (0.5 now) with Siyah Kernel (included) plus the STweaks Hardcore3boost. That's what I did and my system is still very smooth.

i have also encounterd some adrops in performance while using custom roms.....maybe bcoz of more features ...stock rom is more stable and simple that makes it perfct for devices as its in its native environmnt. So i assume stock is faster than custom but at same time boring
You can try who is the most faster for you
I'd think a basic aosp build with a good kernel would be faster than stock. (Even though aosp is technically stock)
I've also noticed this, I've tried most custom ROMS and stock is hard to beat in performance although it lacks options

its the same. but booting into stock is indeed always something special because you're fullwiping into a clean system and that can be felt. the more apps you install, things that hog in the background mostly, you start to notice slight differences but that you get on stock, too. android is much like windows in that regard, it degrades in time. i had stock android for a long time on my nex7, at some point it got so laggy i had to start from scratch. anyway, technically roms are faster, but i doubt it matters in daily use.

There we go! Thanks.
Now onto the point, I would go with touchwiz. I just change the crappy launcher. My problem with AOSP/AOKP is that there is always a problem with something small but for some users its a big problem. For example with Task650's rom for the galaxy s3, it took forever to get bluetooth to work properly. And one update killed it again. By bluetooth I mean connecting it in car/other devices and using it for voice/audio.
It just never feels as fluid as a stock rom.
aosp is smooth and lag free but it lacks some features that differentiates samsung phones from the rest. camera will be completly basic, all the gestures and such will be gone, and so on. the only way to retain them and have a smooth experience is to use a custom launcher, like nova or apex.
Just remember these:
AOSP - be ready for some small bugs (always) Faster roms though. I need bluetooth, and it was a nightmare to keep this working.
TW - stable.
Ran aosp for along time and was the roms of choice. Nit picking annoying bugs drove me away, I use my phone for business, and asop can not hold up.
My opinion Only!
AOSP all day.

I ran AOSP/CM on all my phones up until now. The S4 and it's features are unique. The phone is fluid and smooth using nova prime. I've never had lag from the moment I got my phone. Never thought I'd say this but I'm content as of now with touchjizz. Finally having options for kernels and Nottach's module along with xposed framework this phone has been and absolute Stunner IMO. Best phone I've ever had hands down.

My thoughts exactly. With Nottach's xposed mod, I can make this this look as cool as any ROM. Nova Launcher and widget locker and jellybean keyboard from the market make sure I never see a trace of touchjizz. Except when I go into settings, but I can live with that since I have activity shortcuts to data usage and battery info. Dealing with on/off small issues with Bluetooth, mhl, camera, etc on cm10 just wore me down on my GS2.
I don't have the time that I used to to keep on top of which nightlies work and which ones have weird bugs. Now that things just seem to work, I think I can be happy.
