[Q] KK ROMs have tablet UI? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I apologize if I have missed this information in my searches, but I have been searching and have flashed a few KK ROMs and haven't found Tablet UI in a KikKat ROM. I'm running 4.3 w/ Xposed now in order to have tablet UI.
Are there KK ROMs with tablet UI?

What i've read here on XDA is that google removed tablet UI from the framework in 4.4.
I'm no developer, but i believe that means it would have to be rebuilt from the ground up by someone willing to tackle this, so even if it is possible to see it again, it likely won't be anytime soon if at all.

[Q] TW 4.2.2 vs GE 4.3 (custom roms)

Hello,
Seems there are a lot of TW vs AOSP/AOKP/GE threads but what I'm asking is for a custom TW 4.2.2 rom such as Goldeneye, Infamous, etc... vs GE 4.3 what is everyone running as their DD?
After trying a lot of the TW roms with KT Kernel it seems that no matter how fast you make your TW rom, the GE 4.3 Rom just has the increased smoothness mitigating any smidgen of lag. I really want to run GE as my DD but am conflicted of losing TW camera. I know that in the Sprint roms forum someone is working on a port of TW camera but until then what is your thought process?
Is speed/smoothness your #1 feature regardless?
Personally, I'm running Goldeneye 4.0 w/ Ktoonsez Kernel 7/26/13 at the moment
I came from a Galaxy Nexus and always ran AOSP based roms. However, with the S4 I am only using TW roms because I like a lot of the touch wiz features. If there was a way to keep them (such as smart stay/scroll, air view, etc) I would probably go back to AOSP. Though I'll probably end up going back to AOSP when Key Lime Pie comes out because I won't be patient enough to wait for samsung to come out with their 5.0 update.

That is a great point, I think if Key Lime Pie came out and only came out as a GE rom, I would jump ship immediately.

That port isnt for the 4.3 GE rom...its for the 4.2.2 GE rom.
4.2.2 GE roms still has touchwiz frakeworks which allows touchwiz applications to be ported and installed. In the 4.3 GE rom, those frameworks no lomger exist....making porting a much harder task as you would nit only need to port the camera but also the required frameworks...something that I dont think has ever been done

Definitely agree with that. Sorry should have made it clear that I want some opinions based on never being a TW Camera port on GE roms.
My .02
I've had the S3, Note 2, and now the S4 and always rooted and custom ROMs. I always steered clear of the non TW ROMs for one reason, the camera was sub par. The 4.3 that was ported and recently removed (Per copyright issues) is what I'm on now, and it's hands down the best phone experience I've ever had. It's smooth, stable, simple and blazes the phone! Out of the box, the only change I had to make was to the APN to get AT&T LTE. You simply can't go wrong with this rom, even giving up the fancy schmancy gestures and such..

Are you sure about this? GE4.3 still has functioning S-View. Wouldn't S-View be dead (Like in CM) if the TW framework was not included?

Is it possible to find an Untouched/Odexed 4.3 GE Rom?

Ive been looking around the forum for an untouched and odexed 4.3 ge rom, basically i want a rom thats plain google edition thats untouched, ie as it would be on the actual GE S4 (stock kernel and everything).
does such a thing exist? the i saw on android dev section of xda are usually modified, and deodexed, or otherwise they are old 4.3 leaks and development has been discontinued.
anyone else looking for something similar, does a rom like that even exist or am i going to have to make do with the modded ones?
-thanks for any replies. :good:

[Q] Noob Question - About Kitkat

Hello guys, sorry to take your time reading this but I really got confused.
I see many posts of people that succcessfully ported Kitkat from Nexus 5 to Nexus 4.
Also, saw people that could install Stock 4.4 Kit kat Rom by flashing binaries and factory images. (And I am too noob for that).
So, my point is, didn't anyone was capable to get stock by flashing binaries and etc and them, turn the rom available for download for everyone?
I think if it was possible, it would reduce A LOT the threads over here.
it is available for download silly.
you have aosp and the factory img. factory img you flash via fastboot, and there are plenty of 4.4 aosp builds that you can flash via your recovery. just because someone flashes the factory img via fastboot onto their phone, does NM ot mean that they can provide to you whats on their phone as a zip. it has to be compiled as a rom for you to flash. spend some of your time going through the dev and original dev forums, find yourself a eom to flash.

You download the deodexed official 4.4 kitkat rom here or check out 4.4 custom roms in the development forum.

I think that I will wait for the OTA, I am too much noob to do those stuffs and devices in Brazil are really expensive to get bricked.
Also, I hear that the stock version for N4 (4.4 kit kat) is apparently waaay too similar to 4.3, does not brings transparent nav bars and notifications or white toogles. Also does not bring google experience of google now. Is that truth?
I was using google launcher for N5 and that would be great if I do not have to select always the launcher... everytime I select "always use this laucher", my device keeps me asking about what launcher would I like to use.

It is true that you don't get transparency on the Nexus 4 with Android 4.4 because it still uses (pretty much) the same launcher as for Android 4.3. You can, however, install the GEL as a replacement launcher and make it your default launcher. That will enable transparency and the full GEL experience with Google Now as the far left panel. You can find the instructions here:

Hey, tks for that.
But this will only be enabled (transp. bar and etc) with android 4.4 or android 4.3 as well?
Is there any way to impeach that the stock launcher keeps appearing for me?

The transparency only works with android 4.4. You might be able to get it on android 4.3 using the nova launcher but I haven't tested it so I can't personally guarantee.
You should be able to select the default launcher and the system should keep it like that. Just make sure you press the "Always" button before selecting your option.

Noob Question - Install Android 4.4 on low end tablet
Hi,
I don't know where to post this question as am new to XDA and since my question is obviously a noob one, apologies if I have posted in the wrong one.
I have a low end tablet, Prestigio MultiPad PMP5080B, running Android ICS. I would like to install/update Android 4.4, preferably vanilla (4.4.2 AOSP). How do I go on about doing it. There seem to many a method, can someone point to me a reliable and easy method (with the link to the page if available ).

Wifi Calling

Anyone know if there is a slimmed down 4.4.2 rom with wifi calling? I can'y stand the LG GUI and prefer the base 4.4.2 look but need wifi calling.
Currently there is no custom recovery for official kk. Rom developers are waiting for it before releasing custom Roms. Also, there are only two ways to get root while on kk, they are not that easy, so it will be tricky to slim it down yourself.
Aosp based Roms don't have WiFi calling. It's a closed source app. Also it doesn't use the SIP protocol so you can't use it that way.
Wouldn't be as simple though as flashing a KK rom with current recovery installed?

Nope. KitKat stock looks for kitkat bootloader, which isn't loki vulnerable.
kitkat stock WILL NOT boot without stock recovery and bootloader.
For now I assume? Only reason I ask is when I had my HTC One they seemed to be able to port the Wifi Calling over pretty quickly. Right now it looks like they have it available for KitKat, but they also have a recovery so I guess that's what's gonna hold devs back

Interesting. There's a large thread in the Nexus 4/5 forums where they have been trying to port over WiFi calling forever, but no one has gotten that working yet. Hell, it's been a year and a half.

Stock w/Xposed vs. Custom Rom?

Hey everyone, so I am pretty new to the whole android scene and had a couple of questions.
Do you prefer to use stock w/Xposed or a custom rom? And what are your reasons for doing so?
Also, I had a OPO before and had it rooted and had Blisspop installed. One thing that I really liked was the fact that I could install the nightly updates from the Rom settings, and it did not affect my root status at all. Are there any decent ROM's that can do the same thing for the Nexus 6p?
Thanks for the time and sorry if these are dumb questions!

Your custom ROM had root included.; standard feature in every custom ROM. But that doesn't matter anymore, since SuperSU 2.60+ doesn't write to /system.
Stock ROM, franco kernel, Xposed for me. Because I can.
You can install a custom ROM of choice and xposed. Just be careful not to enable any modules or settings that conflict with your custom ROM. If you have any problems you can always flash xposed uninstaller in twrp and try again. This way you can have the best of both worlds. I'm currently running pure nexus with elemental x kernal as well as xposed.
Does pure nexus allow you to install updates through the settings without having to manually flash a new image?
As of now I'm running stock with Xposed. Stock has just been so damn smooth, fast and stable I feel no need for a custom ROM. Plus Xposed takes care of all the little tweaks/mods that make the phone look unique/custom to my liking.
Most of the custom ROMs we have are just the stock ROM with some features added, so what you really need to ask yourself is whether you want features built in to the ROM, or whether you want to lose some of the ART opportunities by using Xposed.

What exactly do you mean by losing some of the ART opportunities by using xposed? Is there a downside to it?

With pure nexus you have to download a new update and flash in twrp. So far I've been able to dirty flash all updates except the 6.01 upgrade. It only takes a couple minutes to do.

When Xposed first came around it would only work on the Dalvik runtime. When Android switched to the ART runtime with Lollipop I remember reading that the Xposed devs had to mess a bit with the ART optimisations to get Xposed to work with it. It probably isn't all that noticeable in the real world. But really, most custom ROMs for Nexus phones are based on the stock ROM anyway, they're both derived from the same aosp builds. So the argument that stock is smoother is pure placebo. You can choose to have features built into the ROM, or choose to add features yourself via Xposed, the native option seems like a better choice to me.
I'm also on stock + xposed. I thought this would be the most stable, but I seem to get apps crashing at least 10 times per day, ie "App X stopped working. Close or Wait?".
Does anyone else have a similar problem, or would this be addressed if I installed a custom rom?

I'd certainly try a custom ROM, you won't know until you try unfortunately.
