[Q] TW 4.2.2 vs GE 4.3 (custom roms) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hello,
Seems there are a lot of TW vs AOSP/AOKP/GE threads but what I'm asking is for a custom TW 4.2.2 rom such as Goldeneye, Infamous, etc... vs GE 4.3 what is everyone running as their DD?
After trying a lot of the TW roms with KT Kernel it seems that no matter how fast you make your TW rom, the GE 4.3 Rom just has the increased smoothness mitigating any smidgen of lag. I really want to run GE as my DD but am conflicted of losing TW camera. I know that in the Sprint roms forum someone is working on a port of TW camera but until then what is your thought process?
Is speed/smoothness your #1 feature regardless?
Personally, I'm running Goldeneye 4.0 w/ Ktoonsez Kernel 7/26/13 at the moment

I came from a Galaxy Nexus and always ran AOSP based roms. However, with the S4 I am only using TW roms because I like a lot of the touch wiz features. If there was a way to keep them (such as smart stay/scroll, air view, etc) I would probably go back to AOSP. Though I'll probably end up going back to AOSP when Key Lime Pie comes out because I won't be patient enough to wait for samsung to come out with their 5.0 update.

That is a great point, I think if Key Lime Pie came out and only came out as a GE rom, I would jump ship immediately.

That port isnt for the 4.3 GE rom...its for the 4.2.2 GE rom.
4.2.2 GE roms still has touchwiz frakeworks which allows touchwiz applications to be ported and installed. In the 4.3 GE rom, those frameworks no lomger exist....making porting a much harder task as you would nit only need to port the camera but also the required frameworks...something that I dont think has ever been done

Definitely agree with that. Sorry should have made it clear that I want some opinions based on never being a TW Camera port on GE roms.

My .02
I've had the S3, Note 2, and now the S4 and always rooted and custom ROMs. I always steered clear of the non TW ROMs for one reason, the camera was sub par. The 4.3 that was ported and recently removed (Per copyright issues) is what I'm on now, and it's hands down the best phone experience I've ever had. It's smooth, stable, simple and blazes the phone! Out of the box, the only change I had to make was to the APN to get AT&T LTE. You simply can't go wrong with this rom, even giving up the fancy schmancy gestures and such..

Are you sure about this? GE4.3 still has functioning S-View. Wouldn't S-View be dead (Like in CM) if the TW framework was not included?

why root or custom rom a stock Android device?

I just bought my Nexus 4 with 4.2.2 installed.
The question is nexus 4 has stock AOSP android software. Why are their Roms like AOKP or CM10.1 which is the same anyway?
Also nexus devices are always the first to get the updates so why custom rom?

Because custom roms can and do offer new features, better battery life/better performance, more customizability and all of that allows us to make our smartphones feel a bit more personal.
The reason I use android phones is because I enjoy the freedom of being able to tinker with every part of it rather than be locked into the same corporate borefest offered by Fruit-based phone companies.
That's my opinion anyway.

Because that's what XDA is all about. Besides custom ROMs add features that pure AOSP doesn't have. Basically it comes down to personal choice.

What good ROMs based on new Euro f/w?

Since Samsung released a good update to the International versions recently with a bunch of bugs fixes for lag, camera issues, apps to SD, I've heard there have been some ports for our AT&T version?
When I had my Note 2 I didn't do any ROMs since I thought it ran just fine stock, but I used to ROM the heck out of my S3 when I had it. Now that I have the S4 and it just runs like crap in many ways, I am very excited about the new big update. Unfortunately we don't have any idea when it will hit AT&T.
So can anyone recommend a good ROM for our AT&T S4 which is based on that new International Build?
Thanks.
Just head over to the Intl i9505 section and grab a ROM and flash it then flash an at&t kernel. Done
Mint jelly all the way. There are a few choices though.

Goldeneye is pretty damn awesome; keeps all the features, option to install sammy bloatware, and all the speed. Best of AOSP and TW features IMO. Cyanogen Mod breaks too much.

Is it possible to find an Untouched/Odexed 4.3 GE Rom?

Ive been looking around the forum for an untouched and odexed 4.3 ge rom, basically i want a rom thats plain google edition thats untouched, ie as it would be on the actual GE S4 (stock kernel and everything).
does such a thing exist? the i saw on android dev section of xda are usually modified, and deodexed, or otherwise they are old 4.3 leaks and development has been discontinued.
anyone else looking for something similar, does a rom like that even exist or am i going to have to make do with the modded ones?
-thanks for any replies. :good:

[Q] A few questions about Bootloaders, Safestrap, and custom roms For Verizon Note 3

I have a client who wants to have his Verizon Note 3 rooted so he can install custom roms. I currently have a T-Mobile Note 4 so I can install any roms I want
In the past I owned an AT&T Galaxy S4 that had the locked bootloader running SS and I remember you could only install TouchWiz custom roms, and you could not run Cyanogen Mod or other stock android roms.
So is this also true for the Verizon Note 3 due to the locked bootloader. He really wants to be able to root to run CM or ASOP roms. I really don't know much about the Note 3 since I skipped the phone from the Note 2 to the Note 4

You are correct.
Due to locked bootloader, there are no AOSP ROMS for this device, including CM. There are AOSP themed ROMS such as Eclipse which actually have AOSP code in them according to the developer, but it is still Touchwiz based. I am currently on the latest Alliance ROM and it works great! Using Nova launcher in combination with all the options that are present in that ROM, I have no issues not running an AOSP ROM(even though I would love to ) Plus you still get to take advantage of the S-Pen and its goodies. Something that would be missed by flashing AOSP(CM) ROMS.

I have seen AOSP based roms on the note 3 (for verizon, at least). It needs to be on NC2 firmware, however. If you have taken the NC4 OTA, you will have issues.

You are terribly mistaken my friend. Their are no AOSP based ROMS for the Verizon Note 3. Maybe other carriers. Please link to whatever it is that you are referring to.

That is not AOSP based. That is still Touchwiz based.
AOSP means the ROM was built from source using the Android Open Source Project. Samsung has their own interface over the top of AOSP called Touchwiz. Due to Samsung locking down the bootloader, we are unable to flash any AOSP based ROMS. Locked bootloader means no custom kernels which I believe is required to build/run AOSP ROMS(someone correct me if I am wrong.)

Would it be possible to flash an AOSP rom and kernel in the stock rom slot instead of in an alternate rom slot?
I'm not sure if that would change the dynamic.

Unfortunately, no you can't flash an AOSP ROM on a Verizon Note 3. It must be a TouchWiz based ROM. However, Eclipse is a TouchWiz based ROM with AOSP styling.

Ok, what about JasmineRom? It's basically a stock touchwiz rom with a bunch of awesome features. It, however, is the only rom to boast being able to work in a rom slot with NC4 firmware. All others require NC2 firmware.
Do you have any insight on this?

NC4, NC2 are still Touchwiz based. You can flash in Safestrap any ROM that does NOT state "only for Developer Edition". That means Eclipse, Hyperdrive, Alliance, Biggins, CleanROM, JasmineROM, and probably a couple others. These are all Touchwiz based. Now the difference might be what kernel is needed for each ROM as some is made for specific ones. Some will work on either NC4 or NC2 and others will only work on the UNified kernel. You will have to read the opening post in each thread to find out.

[DISCUSSION] KitKat ROMs for titan.

Hello everyone, I'm thinking of compiling some cool KitKat ROMs for titan (Mokee, Carbon, AICP, PAC, AOKP, etc). But I have a doubt. Would anyone even go for kitkat? Like we have mm ROMs, lp ROMs, would you flash KitKat? I personally would love to, as not all mm/lp ROMs deliver the best performance our device is capable of. And plus, KitKat can have more features than ANY lp/mm rom. So just a shout out to know how many people would love to have KitKat revived. If the number is desirable, I'll build some cool KitKat ROMs for titan

I tought once to port some KK ROMs for Titan, but I never had enough time to do it. So, if you're into KK, do it! I will (as well as many others that also likes KK) certainly try.

I never used any KK ROM, so what would be the advantages over marshmallow?
I really like kitkat roms but since my phone (XT1064) came with Android L, it has a different front camera which I think isn't supported in kitkat. I flashed CM11 and front camera wasn't working. So people with this same phone variant probably won't use kitkat roms for this reason. This might be something to take in count.

You rock man! I'd like to see, if it's possibile, an update of KK PA, because i loved that rom, but also every new kitkat rom would be awesome!
i prefer kitkat more than lolipop. its too stable more than lolipop .Yes lolipop has some new features but in stability and perfermance no one will take kitkat's place . i will wait for you new kitkat rom
Add me here too. Like to try a new kit-kat rom.
For me, if you can build something with AOSP base ill use it for sure, since i dont like CM base roms at all, but now im not sure how many AOSP based roms are for KK. But, as everyone is saying, you can go, i think some people will be happy testing them

The problem is that no one maintained AOSP KK for our device. LuK did Cm 11 but had to abandon it cause well he was doing cm 12.1 and AOSP 5.1.1.
Plus there is no layers support( I think) since layers was introduced in LP.
@Vidhanth Go for it. I would like to use KK again.

Yes ofc a kitkat ROM would be welcome, maybe slimkat based? but don't expect too many users(You can expect me, lol!) Also if you don't mind me asking, how about an updated 5.1.1 ROM? I don't like 6.0.1 romS much because of the touchbug. Any 5.1.1 rom would be cool
Sure!! I would definitely flash kk rom. Personally I love KitKat. I was thinking of flashing PA 4.6 B5 today.
Special request:- Could you port Nexus 5's Chroma Layers LP Rom? If possible

Yea, if you say kk roms have more features than lp and mm roms then yes.
+1 here
If you go back to a kit kat rom from an lp you need to do something with the bootloader or you just flash the rom?

Just flash the rom
If you could recreate the magic of Paranoid Android complete with Halo and Floating Windows (KK/JB), I'd be the first to download!
I would try it for sure. If it works fluently I'll maybe stay with it. MM ROMs still have some bugs.
