Wifi Calling - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone know if there is a slimmed down 4.4.2 rom with wifi calling? I can'y stand the LG GUI and prefer the base 4.4.2 look but need wifi calling.

Currently there is no custom recovery for official kk. Rom developers are waiting for it before releasing custom Roms. Also, there are only two ways to get root while on kk, they are not that easy, so it will be tricky to slim it down yourself.

Aosp based Roms don't have WiFi calling. It's a closed source app. Also it doesn't use the SIP protocol so you can't use it that way.

Wouldn't be as simple though as flashing a KK rom with current recovery installed?

Nope. KitKat stock looks for kitkat bootloader, which isn't loki vulnerable.
kitkat stock WILL NOT boot without stock recovery and bootloader.

For now I assume? Only reason I ask is when I had my HTC One they seemed to be able to port the Wifi Calling over pretty quickly. Right now it looks like they have it available for KitKat, but they also have a recovery so I guess that's what's gonna hold devs back

Interesting. There's a large thread in the Nexus 4/5 forums where they have been trying to port over WiFi calling forever, but no one has gotten that working yet. Hell, it's been a year and a half.

Sprint Samsung S4 upgrade to 4.4

I'm still on a stock rooted 4.2.2 Rom and I need to upgrade to 4.4
I've really had no issues with the touchwiz and I'm running the KM kernel, but from what I was told I need to unroot to get 4.4. I don't know if that's true or not, but seeing as you don't have that many touchwiz roms here maybe I should go with ASOP instead? I was looking at the master list of roms but are the roms carrier dependent?
but from what I was told I need to unroot to get 4.4.

You can update your phone through settings (as long as you didn't mess with system files and apps) but you will definitely lose root and get knox.

Yes, roms are carrier dependent (with the exception of CM11 nightly builds, which are now unified across all carriers, the rest provide separate builds for different carriers)

My phone is rooted but running the stock rom, when it came time to upgrade it would not upgrade at all, I forgot what it would hang at but it ended not doing anything, so getting tired of seeing the upgrade was ready to be installed I hid the message.
But now I need the upgrade because of Google Wallet and tap & pay.
So as far as getting another rom I assume I should be just looking under my carries forum here instead of the master list? Now having said that.. OK say I find a ASOP with 4.2 can I just use that instead of unrooting and then doing the update?
In other words installing a custom ASOP rom would still get me on 4.2 as well?

It depends on what version of android the rom features. CM11 for example is a 4.4 KitKat rom so if you install CM11 you would have 4.4 AOSP rom that is close to the original AOSP rom you would find on Google devices.
For some reason I can't boot my phone into recovery.. I'm holding vol up, home and power and I see it saying booting recovery in the upper left but if I keep holding the buttons the screen and the phone just turns back off again.
*edit
I just noticed I use TWRP Recovery so I think I have to start it from the phone being on.
Well this is odd.. OK so I moved the zip file to the root of the SD card and looking at the recovery and it's not listed under the root of the SD card.. I don't get it.
Oh never mind forgot the setting to switch to SD card

I'm OK now, I'm happy to have waited this long for an AOSP ROM.
I can wait longer if it becomes a L ROM for our G3!!
Great news !
it's hard to say...i'm working on a lollypop port since weeks now and the main problem is a kernel panic related to the modem resetting.. i think that once i will figure out how to solve it i will be able to release a first beta
It is usually very hard to get new android versions ported to a device where there is no official rom of the same version for it - you basically are going in blind trying to get all the hardware to work.
If we are lucky we might see one or two builds before LG release theirs (which is now less than 2 months away!) but I would expect them to be buggy with some hardware not working - so far we don't even have a fully working Kitkat AOSP build for our device.

bah, who needs the LG Lollipop rom? probably gonna have their own skin again which, in my opinion, is inferior to stock lollipop. plus, if you have not read, Android 5.0 Lollipop gives developers the option to completely lockdown devices and prevent root, specifically in our devices where bootloader is not unlockable. Don't think I'll take the risk though. It's a huge one!

this is true although (and i may well be wrong) i would presume this would only apply if you take the update from OEM and not custom rom .... if we take a flashable custom rom i would assume that this lockdown is completely irrelevant and fairly risk free providing the devs can get all the hardware side of things up and running
ah yes, you are right. personally though i would prefer to go straight to stock rom after rooting. not really sure what the difference is (if any big changes) between a rooted and non-rooted stock rom

that all depends what you want to be able to do on your device ..... without root you cannot use xposed (although until made to run on ART it wont work with lollipop onwards ) ... you need root to delete / modify any / all system apps and other tweaks under the hood ..... there are many things you could need root for

Root alone does nothing. It's what you do with the elevated privileges that matters. With root access, you pretty much have complete control over the phone's software, so you can do next to nothing, or completely overhaul everything to the point where it is indistinguishable from a stock, non-modified phone.
By the way... If LG isn't blowing smoke up our backsides, we'll have a working Optimus UI w/ 5.0.. guessing 6 weeks, give or take. And it remains to be seen how quickly they release their sources. Until those sources are released, any 5.0 custom ROMs are going to be Lollipop on top of LG's KK stuff (kernel, radio/modem, graphics drivers, etc). Not sure how stable that will all be. My only experience with a phone running a ROM like that was running early KK builds on my old Galaxy S3, which was Android 4.4 built on top of Samsung's Jelly Bean stuff. And that was buggy as hell, tons of problems. Basic stuff, like every time it switched from Wi-Fi to mobile data, I got a kernel panic and it would reboot.
So I would be wary of any LP ROMs for the G3 that didn't include the native LP stuff from LG.

I have an SGH-i337z on Cricket and I was able to root and install TWRP using hroark13's method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...cket-aio-sgh-i337z-jflteaio-twrp-2-7-t2858698)
I've been trying various CM builds, the Google Play Edition ROM and PACMAN, but they all seem to have issues (5GHz WiFi, one app or another not working properly, notification glitches). To be fair, they are AT&T ROMs. Also, it takes a bit of work to install as you have to remove the asserts line from each ROM before installing. But if you just want to root and use TWRP to backup it works fine!

Just out of curiosity, was the GPE ROM you tried the Lollipop one? Also, are there any roms for this phone that work well and stable in your experience?
I haven't tried any lollipop roms yet. The 4.4.4 kitkat GPE ROM was stable with the exception of breaking a music streaming app I use (subsonic). It was also the only ROM that identified the carrier as Cricket instead of AT&T.
Pacman I didn't really like so i can't speak much for its stability.
CM11 can be hit or miss. The nightly seem more stable than the stable or milestone versions usually, but one gave me 5GHz wifi problems. I was never able to use 5GHz with the milestone I tried.
Right now i am using 12/13 nightly CM11 and it has been running very well. I really like the slider shortcuts on the CM lock screen, so I'll probably just stick with CM.

Yes, CM11 is working great! If anything is broken I haven't come across it yet. There are certainly a lot available and any unified or AT&T ROM should work (no need for safestrap), so feel free to try out anything that looks good! I liked GPE and it seemed to work really well until I found it didn't work with one app I use occasionally (subsonic). You might not have any issues with apps you use. I also seemed to get better battery life with GPE. The wifi issue I had with an older CM11 build seems to have been fixed, so that's working well now. The author of the root I used seems to like Skyfall, so you could go that way if you like touchwiz.
Have some fun trying out a couple, and make a backup before installing something different so you can easily go back if you decide you liked one better.

FWIW, I've gotten Goldeneye, Skyfall and stock T-mobile running on my i337z with TWRP. [Q] Phone refuses to boot with a rom

Hi, I've been trying to install a custom rom (at this point ANY custom rom) on my friend's phone. I have worked on several phones before, including my own sprint GS3, but this is my first time trying to work around a locked bootloader, and BOY is it a pain, haha. I'm no dev, but I would like to think that I'm pretty competent.
First a few things to note, are that the phone is currently on NI1 (Been too much of a sissy to go to NJ4 in case it screws something up, I don't even know why), it is the 16Gb version, I am using an external sd card to flash everything, and yes I am flashing loki-doki after everything.
So what I've done so far is:
- Try to install TWRP
- Find out that won't work and finally figure out I need safestrap
- Successfully install safestrap after using towelroot by ODIN-ing the NC1 kernel then going back to the NI1 kernel
- Try to flash Resurrection Remix and KToonsez kernel using a new rom-slot, and wind up soft-bricking (stuck on bootloader screen, can get to download mode)
- ODIN NB1 tar then ODIN NI1 update
- Repeat the last few steps several times because I'm too idiotic to realize that it JUST ISN'T GOING TO WORK!
- Finally find a reference to flashing the ATT kernel modules after the rom. That got me past the soft brick and safestrap screen, but I don't even see a boot animation
As of right now my sequence to successfully not soft-bricking (what an accomplishment) is to flash the rom>gapps>ATT kernel module>supersu>loki-doki>wipe dalvik/cache
Now, is it worth it having already spend a good 7 hours, just to get a custom rom? Of course not, it's not my phone and my friend isn't picky. He'd be just fine with rooted TW. However, It kills me that I don't know what's going on, so here I am lol.
TL;DR: Phone has safestrap, is rooted, but any time I flash a rom it gets past the boot loader/safestrap screen and never shows a boot animation, or anything past that. Can anyone help figure out what's going on please?
Thanks in advance.
You can only flash touch wiz based roms with safestrap and you can't flash kernels with safestrap. That's been your problem with soft bricking.
Edit, see this for roms you can flash http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=53758227

Thanks guys. I thought I read through the whole thread, but there is so much information, it's pretty scattered, I must have missed the thing about only TW roms working.
Now a few more questions:
1) Is it worth updating to NJ4? The phone is new and doesn't have any app data or anything that would be missed by updating. I see quite a few roms in 4.4.4, but it looks like most of them are AOSP based, which leads me to my next question...
2) Is there a way to get AOSP roms to work? I see all of these AOSP based roms, obviously for this phone, but it would be pointless to make them if they don't work.

It wouldn't hurt to update to nj4. But it's not going to help you either. Only phones on mdb or mdl bootloader can flash non touch wiz based roms using loki. And you can't go back to those bootloaders

Oh, I get it now. That didn't quite register before. So just to confirm, after I flash the rom (which already has its own custom kernel included), I still need to flash the stock ATT kernel, correct?
Flash the rom, super su, and the att module for your base. Hyperdrive is a very good rom, good luck. Also the rom doesn't include a kernel, your original kernel stays put. That's why only tw roms work, because your new rom has to be compatible with the kernel already on your phone.
Just reporting in, I now have the phone up and running using Hyperdrive Rom. Thanks for the help!
I actually had a problem where it would not shut down correctly, but found out it was because I was installing the rom in a rom-slot in safestrap. As soon as I tried the stock rom slot, it worked flawlessly.

What Roms is everyone running?

What ROM's are people running on their Verizon LG V20? Im getting ready to root mine and go through that process. Looking over the ROM's though and they seem to be lacking. Back in the day we had tons of options, now we have a handful on XDA. Are there ROM's people are running that arent listed?

The Verizon build of not so stock is probably what you're looking for. Stock based so everything works minus all the bloat. Has static at boot, search some of the other kernels, there is a few that fix static at boot.
