[Q] Best ROM and Kernel? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Next week i'm getting a LG G2 and i would like some advice in which is the best ROM and Kernel i should use?
In other words i would like to know the best combination of ROM and Kernel for LG G2?
sorry for bad english

It's quite difficult to tell... Some people like AOSP roms better, some Stock...
LG's stock is amongst the best of stock roms imho so I suggest you first get to know it and then figure out whether you'd like to change or not.
As for kernels, same story here: if you prefer stability, stock is always better. Battery life is not dramatically improved by any of the kernels I've tried and it's really a matter of preference...
Sorry buddy but these questions either lead to "the depends" answer or to a non-sense argument, usually between stock-partisans and AOSP-partisans... Although for LG there seem to be a consensus around stock being very good anyway, unlike some other brands.
Now for the personal taste: CloudyFlex 2.2 with CloudyKernel is my current daily driver. Stable and smooth plus some great features from Flex rom.
If I helped you, please thank me

One more question, to install CloudyFlex 2.2 which recovery and stock version of android (4.2.2 or 4.4.2) do i need?

Root the device, install Philz Touch recovery and flash away. Doesn't matter which version you start with. If you come from JB and flash a KK rom, make sure you flash the KK baseband but that's all indicated in the OPs

sorry to ask so many questions,
the KK baseband is flashed after or before updating to KK?
and
is it possible to install cloudyflex 2.2 with TWRP (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2449679), because TWRP is much easier to install?
If you are wondering 'WOW, this guy must be really lazy?', my answer is yes, i am lazy, because internet in South Africa is expensive and very limited and i will thank you as many times as i need until i know everything i need to know!

Everything you need to know must be posted in the dedicated Q&A thread, no need open endless topics
You have 5 posts and already opened 3 threads, this looks like a small abuse...

Dude, I realize I already gave you all the links in another similar thread you opened...
I find Philz to be easy and it seems compatible with more roms but I can't vouch for that.
BB can be flashed before or after I believe. Or you can flash along...

ready to root and flash

Hey guys. I'm to the point where I'm ready to flash my phone to get it's potential out. I'm seen the guide on how to do it. So what is the best or most stable Ics ROM? I also want to get into voltage and clock modding and all that good stuff. Any advice? I've done this multiple times but they have all been on prepaid smartphones. Not sure if there is a big world if difference.
Am I in the wrong area? Not responses yet
Hi,
Section is rigth but question is quite too general....each of Us have different taste. For example I hate Samsung style(stock rom) so currently I am on Paranoiddroid rom (Cm9 based rom with lovely custom Dpi per app).
Anyway my personal advice before flashing any Ics based rom is...READ READ AND READ again because there are many risk related to buggy kernel that can hard brick your Note.
Sorry for not being too detailed about this but, believe me, best thing in Xda is Read, it will make you understand what you are going to do and, most of all, will prevent you to hard brick your really expensive Smartphone.
Bye
Hey I too am in the same state as you. However I looked at some roms and so far I would recommend the kingdroid ics ROM v.2.0. I've read the 2.1 is buggy unlike the 2.0. And that ROM has the s pen functions. Paranoid ROM doesn't have the s pen function but can access the tablet mode of each apps. I'm not sue if king had the new s memo. I'm pretty nervous about doing it since all the news about bad kernels and hard bricks. Hope this is useful.

I'm pretty much the same, except my note is already rooted. But I'll only flash gb roms until a much safer ICS rom is released.

1. CassiesXtralite
2. CheckROM
3. KingDroid
are ones I like. I have yet to flash ICS.
Stock ROMS are also nice.

[Q] Custom Roms

Hi all!
I recently got Nexus 4 and I'm getting back to the android scene now since my old Mytouch 4G days. I was an iphone user. So, Ive read lot of forums and did search up typical questions I have.
Firstly, is there a relatively good custom rom for availaboe for nexus 4 besides the Stock 4.2 that im using currently. Any opinions? I prefer better battery life, touch screen response, and overall smoothness, but dont want to compromise performance though. Also, is CWM more reliable custom recovery than TWRP?
Thanks!
Well first of all to get those "Custom Rom's" you need to Root (Jailbreak) your device.
Cyanogenmod 10.1 is pretty good for starters Rom wise. And before you do anything DO YOUR HOMEWORK! ... go on Youtube watch and learn how people Root, Flash Customs ROMS & Kernels (Overclocking, better Battery Life etc etc) before blindly doing anything.
What you are asking here is purely opinion. I prefer TWRP and others prefer CWM. I like Twrp because I can easily flash multiple files instead of flashing them all separately. Custom Rom I use is CyanogenMod. But again, that's all opinion. See, we have an AOSP device, so most roms will be very stable. Custom Roms are based on AOSP instead of Touchwiz or other skinned Android version. This means less hacking is required to get things working in custom roms. When a Samsung or HTC phone gets CyanogenMod or another AOSP based Rom, there are several hacks to get things working and even then, not everything works. You will find all Roms to be stable. I choose CM because they have great features, but don't go overboard. AOKP IMO is too much and most of it is useless to me. But, some people like having all the options AOKP brings.
I suggest trying things out! That's the best part of Android. Make a backup of your current setup in recovery and flash away! It's easy to restore what you had. It's nearly impossible to brick a Nexus and I recommend giving each Rom you try more than just an hour or two and really try it out. You made a great choice by getting a Nexus as your first Android after being away for a while. Take advantage of it!

says the guy who bricked his n4 ...i kid
Try sr1 ROM,,that thing runs the smoothest out of all the ROMs out there. Which is crazy, as anything you'll try will be rather fast due to how responsive this device is. Pair that with Franco kernel and you'll have pretty great battery life as well.

Haha lol, Thank you my new friend for the advise ! I am currently reading a thread here on XDA on manually rooting and stuff. I am learning C programming so this should help me in learning =)! I prefer XDA thread guides over Youtube videos, which honestly have and are bad, in my opinion. I want to know exactly why this and what this even the minor details. Thanks for your input !

Wonderful reply, thank you. I did use TWRP on my brothers Gnex, it did a soft brick, and had to revert to CWM when flashing CM on his phone, i dont know why it did. I did full wipe, and other wiping in recovery :S. For a noob like myself, I'm just afraid of bricking despite all the reading I do and know it well, in real world things do go wrong. As for Roms, I do understand what AOSP and AOKP mean, but don't know whats the difference in actual roms.
I won't have a lot of time with flashing roms my university opens soon, so I can give it a shot. CM 10.1 nightlies is a good start? Or Xylon? From my research, I leaning towards them and the MinCo + Franco.
Thank you for the warm welcome , I feel really happy and glad to be back to android again . This time there is no going back, I love penta band 3G phones and they only exist in android and windows. But, prefer android due to so much you can do now!
One last thing though, about the kernel, should I start with Franco one, or stick with stock for now?

Aright , thank you friend ! I will start with sr1 Rom then and see how things go from there .
You must read a lot before start tweaking, xda is the biggest encyclopedia of all.
I highly recommend Paranoid Android, it's just super awesome!

To new frontiers, quick, before they become old ones! Built like a brick...

Firstly, let me give MASSIVE props to mskip for turning rooting a new baby from a horror into an ice cream on the beach with his S3 Toolkit (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488).
I began my android journey 2 years ago with the original S1 i9000. It was awesome, I fell in love, i rooted and flashed everything from stock root to cyanogen / darky / MIUI to debusROM. I ended up using MIUI for a while and eventually settled for the most stable ROM - cyanogen 9 (stable version).
I have just bought an SGS3 and face a dilemma. Without custom ROMs, the android (read:samsung) experience if unsatisfactory to say the least. However I need this phone to WORK, so cannot afford flashing buggy ROMs. Cyanogen 10 is only released as a nightly (unstable), and while some people say its fine, others say it doesn't play well with the S3.
I'm looking for a JB ROM that is as stable as a brick ****house and will not give me any issues. This is not a "best rom" thread because that implies subjectivity. This is a binary query, a yes / no statement. Either its stable 10 / 10 or its unstable 1-9 / 10.
I'm leaning towards WanamLite (from what I've read), but would like input on which custom ROMs offer a completely stable experience, with everything working.
Thanks for your replies, thanks for this awesome community, thanks devs, yo.
Cape Town, South Africa
I am a constantly dissatisfied rom slut, and I have tried at least 95% of the roms out there ranging from Samsung based MIUI to CM10.1 and there have only been quite a few that I've really come to like.
On the aosp side, there's CM10.1, which I deeply love. Though, I don't stay on it for longer periods because it has its fair share of bugs. All because of Samsung's unwillingness to give out the sources needed for the exynos SoC.
JellyBam (another aosp rom) is also quite nice because it's a mix of three aosp roms. CM, AOKP and ParanoidAndroid.
On the Sammy side, there's the Omega series. Absolutely wonderful Samsung based rom. Touchwiz isn't as near beautiful as AOSP is, though it's not bug ridden either.
WanamLite is okay, but I like Omega better. Greeks now their stuff.
I'm swaying back and forth between aosp and Samsung like a palm tree on a windy day.
Thanks for the reply. So Omega is like stock, but with extended power menu, more control, etc?
That might be the way to go, even if it is samsung...
I HAVE A BUILD / BASEBAND QUESTION
I am slightly confused as to what is important. My stock details read:
Baseband Version:
I9300XXDLID
Build Number:
JRO03C.I9300XXDLJ1
The baseband is my modem, right? And the build of a rom i flash needs to be similar to what I already have? What if I can't find a custom rom with the same details? Does it not matter?
I don't remember i9000 rom flashing being this complex with regards to build numbers...

Yes, Omega is like stock, though with a black statusbar, blue circular battery icon and some good looking quick toggle icons, plus a lot of mods.
You don't need the rom to match your current setup, so long as the rom you flash is for the i9300; you're good to go.

busy downloading Omega 44.1 (XXUFMB3) 4.2.1.
Wow.. i remember when roms were 150mb!
Once this is downloaded, what kernel do you suggest? The one that comes with Omega? Also, where can I find a list of modems, and how to i find out which one is good for South Africa?

baseband is your modem......there are two modem threads, one with just modems, and one with modems and their corresponding RIL, I suggest using the latter.
Don't worry about the build, not relevant really.
Follow induction from the thread for installation, and just as a foot note
I advice putting your Rom on the ext sd card, several Roms ask in the installer if you want to do a super wipe prior to installation, this will wipe internal ad, hence the advise! Don't forget to make a nandroid, do a titanium, and most importantly back up your efs with HC-KTool from Play store
Thanks. Please explain what the latter actually is? I've flashed tons of modems in my i9000 days, but never heard of a RIL.
I wish devs always released an Odin-flashable version. Always so much easier.

RIL = Radio Interface Layer, has some carrier specific info as far as I know.
Flashing a modem in recovery is easier than doing it with Odin, but most modems have both versions available
don't go with omega 44.1 if you want a stable rom. it 's based on a samsung 4.2.1 leak and pretty buggy as of what i've heard. Try the 43 which is the latest 4.1.2 based omega.

As usual,a best Rom thread in disguise
©®™
Omega 43 w/ PERSEUS kernel. It's an amazing kernel with features like screen calibration and custom cpu governor tweaks.
My screen looks SO MUCH BETTER bc of Perseus. The new calibration profile is beautiful. I can't believe how ugly the S3 screen was compared to now. Finally, I have true whites and blacks.
There are other kernels like Siyah, yank555 and Boeffla. But Perseus is the deepest and most sophisticated.
Also, forget sounds tweaks like Acid and Boeffla. Go straight to MegaBassMods. Other sound mods cancel each other out. MegaBassMods offers no nonsense bass with an EQ.

This seems like a "best ROM" thread which aren't normally allowed. Everyone has their own opinion and what works for them best. I would look at features and bugs and see what fits you best.

[Q] Need help choosing a rom

Hey guys,
Sorry for the noob question but I wanted to hear some of your opinions on this.
I got my Note 9005 shortly and after finally getting the Network to work, I decided to flash CM11 for now. I love CM11 but for a phone like the Note 3 which has an insane number of cool features, its not the best.
The problem is, I would use the stock rom for all the features but I absoloutely hate Samsungs UI and with the trouble ive been having with Odin, I thought id ask if there was a different rom I could use?
Is there some sort of alternative to the stock rom which:
1) I can flash with recovery
2) Has alot of the stock rom features
3) Does not look like a child made it (sorry to people who like TouchWiz)
I hope someone can help.
Thank you!
Better go for heavily themed roms based on stock rom

Hi, i have read it. Why dont you try some AOSP ROM: C-rom, Cacbon Rom
Carbon rom looks good but im more looking for something that takes full advantage of the Notes features not just Androids customizability.
If you really like "features" you may want to try a stock based rom like Omega or XNote

[q] [help] i just got my note 3 sm-n9005

Can someone help me decide what ROM to flash on my note 3 or who can tell me whats the best ROM for note 3?
OH! BTW do i have to root my phone first before flashing a custom ROM? I honestly don't know how to ROOT and FLASH(sorry don't have much time to back read coz of my F#cking work) I'd really appreciate if you can help me or give me an easy STEPS for me to follow.
i am looking for a ROM that is stable and fast, i mean i like to play on my note 3 so i'd really like to flash a ROM which is fast and can extend my battery life by tweaking or whatever.
THANKS in advance!!

- Asking for the "best" rom is prohibited on XDA, because no one can answer that question
- Regarding rooting before flashing a custom ROM, it is not mandatory. Some custom is pre-rooted already. Or you can root later.
- If you want to root using CF-Auto-Root, I will show you steps, it's very simple and easy, but it will trip the Knox. If you don't want the Knox to be tripped, search for Towelroot instead.
- As for extending battery life, you can try Lean Kernel (I have not tried it).

Lean kernel is here.
It's almost "impossible" to recommend a ROM. Everyone's needs/wishes are different. The best - and only sensible, to be honest - advice I or anyone else can give you is to read read and read again all youcan about a ROM, flash it, see if you like it, and repeat as necessary.

The dl links don't show for me from my work pc, but if you're in Europe and you have the 9500 version, I'm 99% sure it's 3.11-hlte-Eur or something similar.
Some custom ROMs may come budled with Lean kernel - not sure, I don't use it any more.
I know you're not asking for advice, but I mean well - as you say, you're new to flashing/ROMs etc. If I were you, I'd get to know whichever ROM you decide on first and its capabilities, especially root. Tweaking kernels would be the last thing I'd want to deal with. Trust me, you'll have more than enough tweaking to keep you happy for days irregardless of what ROM you use
