Do NOT flash your hero phone with 3rd party ROMs unless necessary. I have played with many kinds of ROMs for 1 year. Most of them are downright laggy, unstable, or battery-draining although you could have some new features. These Roms are not fully tested. Some of them even contain spyware... You normally need to wipe your phone for most 3rd party ROM updates and that means you need to re-configure your phone again and again.. Now, I got my stock ROM back after making a Gold-card and I'm very satisfied with my HTC stock ROM. This is a fast, stable, power-saving and fully-tested ROM. Upgrade is very smooth and not painful.
I would suggest you to flash your phone by RUU and then root it by some tools, e.g. http://www.unlockroot.com/. But, please keep an eye on the install procedure. Do not install unnecessary apps unless you want.
The above is only my personal experience. Hope it helps.

You must have been loading up some really bad ROMs if that was your experience. What kind of spyware have you even seen installed in ROMs? Each to their own.

Yeah, if it wasn't for custom roms I would've gotten myself a new phone ages ago. If you want a bugless Rom you just flash a fully tested Rom, if goin want to try something new flash a new Rom. I've never heard about spyware either.

My used ROMs include Crons, CM, Villian and some others that I can't remember. At present, I don't think there is any spyware in Crons, CM, Villian. Crons, CM, Villian are generally recognised as good 3rd pary ROMs. However, I don't think any of them is more stable or faster than stock ROMs.
I found some spywares installed as system apps in some Chinese ROMs disributed from hiapk.com and bbs.anzhi.com.. These are individual-maintained ROMs.
To my understanding, if an app requires extra permissions than what it actually needs, then that could be a spyware.
I'm not a professional mobile device developer. What I need is a rooted ROM that is bugless, does it job well and therefore suitable for everyday use.

Well, New features are very likely to require more computational resource. If you had a machine for win98, and you wanted to try Win7 with that, then I would suggest you not to do it.. HTC Hero is extacly that win98 Machine.

That's why you stick to well known sites I also run my ROMs through tests before every release.

Sounds good. I've never tried your ZERO ROMs. I may ask my friends to try it. I'm tired of changing and like the stock ROM (gets charged once and keeps running for three days).

Now I use a repack of the oficial OTA 2.1-update1,flashed it and i get some Force Close errors(like com.htc.bgp etc).
I tried VillainROM v12 and v13 and i was stuck on the load-screen (i think it is the Sense app that is stuck on).
I saw that @dastin1015 uploaded his Zero Hero Sense 3.5 ROM, looks nice and I would like to try it, but I have some doubts about some bugs. Also, i searched the forum, and couldn't find any info on how to downgrade to 2.1 (if something goes wrong). I can't post a question under the Developer forum (as a new forum user).
Any instructions or help for me(a new android user).

Bharat has a new RC version of dastin315's rom. Its at the bottom of the thread. Maybe that'll help?
As for 2.1, you could flash an official 2.1 RUU and then root afterwards.

I'm a custom rom addict, rarely do I have a rom for more than 2 months before looking for something which more/better features. Sure there's some laggy roms out there, most of which are still in beta so you can't expect them to be "perfect" Roms. That said, there's plenty of excellent roms being worked on by some very clever and creative people, that go above and beyond the features stock roms offer. Get them from trusted sites/developers and you'll enjoy the experience

The fact is that some Sense lovers are tired of laggy new sense ports I guess
Therefore, a stock android ROM is not a choice.
So, in a way, I must admit that gnubot is right.
But we can't deny that the work that JieeHD, dastin1015, elelinux and other devs did is pretty awesome!
And to finish, I don't really remember how many months HTC devs took to make a correct release of the new Sense...

That is SO correct!!
I've tried non-Sense roms, they're great and fast and stable and good-looking, but not for me... i don't feel comfortable with them.
I even have got back to generic 1.5. So getting back to stock is not a solution.
At this moment, i have Wildheroc RoseV5, it's sense and it's GB.
I'm waiting for the Zero Hero Sense 3.5 to be "stable" and i'll flash it
I just had to post in this thread because of the title. It's pretty ridiculous that you'd create a topic on this site as bline007 said and not somewhere else. Especially using that topic title? You didn't really expect that anyone would agree with you I hope. For your sake I can only assume you meant to say "Be careful I've found some 3rd party roms with spyware" or the like.
P.S. I apologize for the flameish response but I feel a lot of patronage for this site and it's members because of the work massive amount of work and personal time they have spent to make my 'legacy' phone go out of it's comfort zone just to bring us features, options and a longevity we never expected from this phone. Hello everybody and excuse me for starting a new thread. I would like to know wich is the best custom rom for HTC Magic, a friend of mine gave me his phone to flash a custom rom, he has no idea of flashing roms and he is amazed by my custom roms on Galaxy S. As long as i know the phone is rooted( i verified with Titanium Backup)
and i will follow the steps for flashing something on this device. All i want to know is what should i install for him? I just want something stable. Thank you!
Honestly if you want something stable and good on battery life, stay stock and just theme the stock rom. . . it's less hassle, don't have to worry about flashing radios, spl's, or worrying about a bug .ect .
I've used CM6, and ezGingerbread. . . unfortunately none of these froyo rom's worked for me after the 1st boot so i went back to stock and themed mines .

Thank you for the info...i'm pretty disappointed about this phone, however is not mine , it's a pain in the ass to find all the **** you need (like outdated links). Finally i flashed CursorSense and my friend is happy with.

I've been pretty happy with the DreamTeam Froyo ROM. It's been very stable and in my experience the phone is a bit snappier as compared to the stock (T-Mobile) ROM.
Ion Rom for Magic is perfect. It's the most close to a stock rom, but with better energy behavior.
I've just pull my Magic out of the cupboard to use it during "dangerous" activities (trekking, etc), and I'll give him Ion again.

The most stable rom I've ever used is Froyobylaszlo. I just ext 4 and nothing else and it runs fine.
sionce i had this phone i never wanted to use the stock 1.5,, it's so annoying and very stupid and not supported by most of my apps "skype,viber,nimbuzz,whatsapp..etc" and so i changed to CM6 and it was so stable running it for daily use for about a year!! it's soo stable and powersaving is much pretty oookaay
now i'm using GingerYoshi it is reeeaally awesome and makes everything fast and easy and more stable than CM6 in games but it reboots immedietly if RAM went full it does not manage it well u'll need to use a task manager and close apps frequently..
short words,, i was really happy with my CM6 froyo but now i'm happier with GingerYoshi.. GY here i guess it's sticky up there in development

If you want something stable, you'd probably not feel like trying those mimicking the custom ROM on Galaxy S.
The stablest ROM I tried ever, with New Radio on my 32A device, is FroyoDragon0.7 with custom Froyo themes.
All the APKs you need can be found in the Android Market (Enabler).
It is really worthy of a try.
Totally agree with above post, froyodragon 0.7 is by far the best rom i've come across for this phone, second to that would be bananabread 3.1...very fast roms. no prob;lems so far, currently using froyodragon.
So I am currently running stock ICS on my A500 and was thinking of putting a 3rd party rom on it. Currently the OEM rom is fine, only 1 issue and that is, its not mounting usb when connected to my computer...
But thats another time, for now I would like to get some opinions on some current roms for our device. I want something that is: fast, lightweight, everything must work. Thats basically it, pretty easy, I dont ask for much
So just doing a quick search, I found 3 roms that look pretty popular and fit most of my requirements. A fourth would be stock ICS (current rom).

From your selection I`ll recommend FLEXREAPER too and maybe the extreme version because you are all ready on ICS bootloader.
But personal, means with full hearth, I recommend tegraowners ICS ROM v168! This ROM has a lot more options then FLEXREAPER f.e. USB modem support for a500.

AOKP officially supports the A500 too, but I don't think their ROM is complete.
I'm running Flexreaper with the latest ICS bootloader = OVERCLOCKING. So the speed is there, lots of crap has been stripped out of the ROM and there is nothing that I know of that doesn't work.
The Tegraowners ROM has a lot of extra features that the ROMS on here don't have but if you also read the thread there are a lot of people who have problems here and there for it. I've tried it. It's slick but I fell Civ's is just as good and he is more helpful to the XDA community.
Well Civato is definitely a great guy , but Thor is very helpful not only to this community but many more , XDA thwarts progress in many ways (i wont go into the thor deal) ,but I wouldnt suggest one over the other , they are both outstanding and we are lucky to have the "few" devs for a500 that we have , I remember a bout a year ago there was twice as many ,xda seems to run alot of these guys out for what ever reason (not my problem) ! Your gonna get complaints from whatever rom you choose , I would suggest reading the OP for the rom and then re-reading it often ,your less likely to have problems that way!

I've been running various versions of Flexreaper for a while now, and I really like it. I tried taboonay for a while, but Flexreaper worked better for me. I also love having the Acer ring. I don't know how many ROMs have that, but its handy for sure. Civato (Flexreaper Dev) is putting out new stuff all the time, too.
Have tried them all. Personnaly flexreaper has been the best for me. As long as you do a full wipe before installing and have the correct bootloader installed. The best thing to do is check them out yourself. I stayed away from betas and test builds until I learned restore and recovery techniques, as I locked up my tablet the first time I flashed a new rom.
Hey guys, so I'm kinda new at doing custom roms and kernels and I'm super eager to learn everything. I just unlocked my bootloader and rooted my phone succesfully yesterday. But of course, rooting the nexus s is a must to install custom roms.
I want to know what you guys think are GOOD and STABLE ROMS where everything seems to function.
I was looking at the nexusshacks website and they have the AOKP kang jellybean ROM but I'm hearing from a bit of people that not everything works and it freezes at the boot screen. also there's a problem that apparently you cant see your gallery and music, and also data doesnt work on it.... I just want something that works good and is stable and gives me good battery life!

The best thing about these ROM is you can try them for yourself and see if it work for you.
A lot of people don't follow the instruction and complain all the time, there are people enjoying the ROM and you will never hear from them. My respect to the developers who do great work, because of them I have the latest and best android experience ever, for the last two years I have no need to upgrade my phone.

Rooting isn't a must for installing custom roms you can always use fastboot tool to install custom recovery
I've flashed one million custom roms to my i9023. And what I learned from it is flashing most of them was just a waste of time. However, if I hadn't done this, I wouldn't have known what to choose now. Gingbread roms are really fast and responsive. However they are not so smooth when it comes to scrolling. Also gingerbread roms lack a lot of nice features that come in later builds.
ICS was a misunderstanding for me. It was slow, laggy but the functionality was better than gingerbread. I was ready to sell my nexus because of that disappointment.
Finally Jelly Bean came along. And that, my friend is something different. Project butter makes the phone so smooth, scrolling is superb, animations and applications seems so smooth now. Speed of gingerbread(almost) and looks and functionality of ics
You can try every rom you can. You're gonna waste a lot of time just on flashing restoring, flashing and restoring and so on. You might even get frustrated. Or you can try this and simply start liking your phone

cool thanks man... ONE question before I begin... Im assuming the kernel is already in the ROM .zip file here right? Now if the kernel is seperate do you just add into the SD card like adding a ROM to the sd card? do you have to do anything under recovery?
Kernel is included. Just install this rom from the recovery kernels are always in a zip file, you install them like you install a rom.
But this time you don't have to even think about the kernel, because it's already built into whole rom zip file

the pic & music issue is probably related to the bad Rom manager app update that put .nomedia files where they didn't belong.
I always run a new/updated Rom with its baked in kernel for a day or two to see how it does before flashing a separate kernel, unless I have major issues related to the baked in kernel. Not all devices act the same, even on the exact same setup.

If you're new to the whole flashing game with the android devices id say start with Flashing Custom Kernels. So you can get the the feel for what just the kernel can do for your phone. There's a couple well named ones that you might hear a lot about like the Matr1x Kernel, GLaDOS Kernel, Thalamus Kernel. For the most part a few of them have the same stuff but certain Kernels run faster or smoother. Once you get the hang of that then move to Custom ROMS. As everyone says you kinda have to try out Everything for yourself as 2 people can have 2 completely different experiences with flashing. Essentially though, the Names that you see a lot are typically the most liked ROMS and Kernels for there Features and Stability.

I think its the other way around due to fact that I would not recommend flashing a kernel over stock ota without backing up first. Reason for this is that if you want to get an ota update with the stock ROM it won't work if the kernel is different from the one Google provides (experienced this problem while trying to flash a completely stock Google provided rom). So I would first flash a ROM and test it, trying as many features and see if that's what I like and then start experimenting with different kernels as most might not be stable for your particular phone. I am a vanilla Android type of person nonetheless.
Note: the rom a developer chooses are most likely the ones that he thinks are the most stable so in theory you should not run into any problem with it.

Hey guys i really appreciate the advise. Just to let you all know, I flashed AOKP kang ROM and it's so smooth and quick. I also flashed a matrix kernel v.22 (believe its the cfc version). However, I was really hoping to overclock my cpu a little to get some better gaming performance. I'm looking everything under the ROM settings and the actual phone settings to see if there's anything to change for the cpu.
How do I overclock the cpu??? I know there's customizable roms where you can overclock the cpu for games then tone it down for normal usage and what not; that's really what I wanted.

I use a an APP called "NSTools" or "SetCPU"
I'm order to oc, you must be using a kernel that supports oc. The matr1x 22.5 (his jb version) doesn't support oc, but he should have a new version it soon. I can't say if it can be overclocked though.

OK wow I just installed my previous apps and now the phone is slow and buggy as hell.. must've rebooted itself at least 10 Tims in then last hour while I using it

good question.. personally I use codename (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1839249) with air kernel(that supports oc, even if I set max cpu 1000 as default).. really fast, no lags with good battery life and everything seems work great. I've tried a lot of roms and a lot of them are really good (I like to change a lot) and in my opinion you have to try a lot of them and chose your favourite
p.s.every time you flash a rom or kernel is better to make a backup(and then a wipe), so if something went wrong you can restore the phone as it was before.. sometimes kernel is not included in rom, you have to check it in phone informations.

well i'll tell you right now, AOKP kang is not for me. Keeps crashing, almost all ****ing day. Its rebooted itself atleast 10 times within the last 10 mins. i click something and it freezes and crashes and reboots... ts ****ing ridiculous... I'm gonna go to codename

aww I forgot a thing.. usually results are different for different models. I have i9023 but I think it's good even in other models

Hey I actually checked out that codename jellybean thread you showed me... I clicked on the link and their zip is 3.1.0 and i have 3.3.2 downloaded on my computer.... I got the file from nexusshacks.com - am i missing something? Also, Im not sure if there's a kernal that comes with it, so i was wondering if there is any kernels and if there is, do you have a link?:cyclops:
EDIT: I'm going to have to apologize to AOKP. I think the ROM i was running on my phone was a buggy ROM, the unstable one before BUILD 1. I didnt realize this until I watched a video on nexusshacks.com.. but either way i flashed codename jellybean

kernel is not included in that rom.. I use air kernel, which has everything you asked for (use nstools to control it). this is the link

hey, I just flashed codename and air kernel (no modifications) and i just downloaded NStools. It came as an apk. file, I was just wondering what to do with this? do i just throw it into my SD card?

I recently got Nexus 4 and I'm getting back to the android scene now since my old Mytouch 4G days. I was an iphone user. So, Ive read lot of forums and did search up typical questions I have.
Firstly, is there a relatively good custom rom for availaboe for nexus 4 besides the Stock 4.2 that im using currently. Any opinions? I prefer better battery life, touch screen response, and overall smoothness, but dont want to compromise performance though. Also, is CWM more reliable custom recovery than TWRP?

Well first of all to get those "Custom Rom's" you need to Root (Jailbreak) your device.
Cyanogenmod 10.1 is pretty good for starters Rom wise. And before you do anything DO YOUR HOMEWORK! ... go on Youtube watch and learn how people Root, Flash Customs ROMS & Kernels (Overclocking, better Battery Life etc etc) before blindly doing anything.
What you are asking here is purely opinion. I prefer TWRP and others prefer CWM. I like Twrp because I can easily flash multiple files instead of flashing them all separately. Custom Rom I use is CyanogenMod. But again, that's all opinion. See, we have an AOSP device, so most roms will be very stable. Custom Roms are based on AOSP instead of Touchwiz or other skinned Android version. This means less hacking is required to get things working in custom roms. When a Samsung or HTC phone gets CyanogenMod or another AOSP based Rom, there are several hacks to get things working and even then, not everything works. You will find all Roms to be stable. I choose CM because they have great features, but don't go overboard. AOKP IMO is too much and most of it is useless to me. But, some people like having all the options AOKP brings.
I suggest trying things out! That's the best part of Android. Make a backup of your current setup in recovery and flash away! It's easy to restore what you had. It's nearly impossible to brick a Nexus and I recommend giving each Rom you try more than just an hour or two and really try it out. You made a great choice by getting a Nexus as your first Android after being away for a while. Take advantage of it!

Try sr1 ROM,,that thing runs the smoothest out of all the ROMs out there. Which is crazy, as anything you'll try will be rather fast due to how responsive this device is. Pair that with Franco kernel and you'll have pretty great battery life as well.

Haha lol, Thank you my new friend for the advise ! I am currently reading a thread here on XDA on manually rooting and stuff. I am learning C programming so this should help me in learning =)! I prefer XDA thread guides over Youtube videos, which honestly have and are bad, in my opinion. I want to know exactly why this and what this even the minor details. Thanks for your input !

Wonderful reply, thank you. I did use TWRP on my brothers Gnex, it did a soft brick, and had to revert to CWM when flashing CM on his phone, i dont know why it did. I did full wipe, and other wiping in recovery :S. For a noob like myself, I'm just afraid of bricking despite all the reading I do and know it well, in real world things do go wrong. As for Roms, I do understand what AOSP and AOKP mean, but don't know whats the difference in actual roms.
I won't have a lot of time with flashing roms my university opens soon, so I can give it a shot. CM 10.1 nightlies is a good start? Or Xylon? From my research, I leaning towards them and the MinCo + Franco.
Thank you for the warm welcome , I feel really happy and glad to be back to android again . This time there is no going back, I love penta band 3G phones and they only exist in android and windows. But, prefer android due to so much you can do now!
One last thing though, about the kernel, should I start with Franco one, or stick with stock for now?

Aright , thank you friend ! I will start with sr1 Rom then and see how things go from there .
You must read a lot before start tweaking, xda is the biggest encyclopedia of all.
I highly recommend Paranoid Android, it's just super awesome!
