Knox info - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Random question, but as I'm upgrading from the s3 I'm new to knox.
If I root, will knox keep warning me and getting in the way of my general phone usage?

Hi,
I did upgrade from S3 to S5, I also root my device immediatly
So, Knox won't jump at you if you're rooted, yet *I think* that you'll be warned when trying to actually using it..
I'm not sure because Knox can be disable, and along the way of transfering my data , knox was disabled (i think Supersu apps does that), else I'm sure you can find how to disable it somewhere on xda !!

Rooting mja

Hello everyone and thanks for helping me out in my last post. OK so I wait and get my mja update, which by the way fixed all the bugs on the gs4. Now I am thinking I want to root but I can't find a guide online anywhere, a Lil help would be appreciated.

You haven't searched or read much. You can use CF auto root.
Sent from my SPH-L720 using Tapatalk
No I have done my research CF doesn't work with sprint gs4 Mja build

The only way to root MJA is to use CF and trip the Knox counter.

OK just a few more questions. So in the distant future will it be possible to turn knox back to 0x0 and unroot phone?

Maybe. But it doesn't matter. At this point in time, it has been confirmed that Sprint will not be denying service for devices with the Knox counter tripped.

Yep your right. Only thing I'm having trouble with now is where is my cwm to flash cyanogenmod.
I also have great news for all gs4 users who aren't rooted yet and running mja. I ran cf auto root on my pc with all anti-virus turned off and everything worked perfect, no SU or knox problems at. I was on sprint mja build.
Read up, make sure u have the right software and drivers and you should be fine.

Mr.kennyglass123 just got some confirmed info that sprint will repair/replace your phone with the knox counter set 0x1 so that's some positive news. I've have been able to successfully root and add a custom kernel to 4.3 without any issues and it's not as bad as it seems just people where making the mistake of trying to go back to a earlier update and with the new bootloader that just not possible right now. So, it's not that scary to do this update but I can understand where ur coming from thou buddy. An important clarification, Sprint will do this! Samsung will NOT!!!! It is very important you understand the difference. If you are paying for Sprint TEP (Total Equipment Protection), Best Buy Protection, or even Square Trade Insurance then the Knox flag shouldn't be a problem. If you do not have any of the insurance packages and you are solely relying on the Samsung warranty for your phone than you should know that Samsung will reject any warranty claim if the Knox flag is tripped or they can tell that you rooted it. They will fix your phone for a fee.

Do I need root?

Hi,
I am waiting for note 3 to arrive. Ordered by my company.
I have a S2 now and have flashed many roms and was always rooted.
Now I run stock rom rooted only to freeze apps.
Having read a lot about knox and its warranty void, I wonder do I need root just to freeze apps? Can it be done without root?
EJ
Sent from my GT-P6800 using xda app-developers app
No you can not freeze apps on a non root device but if it is a company phone you need to talk to your it-manager if you are allowed to do so. For Security reasons
Thx.
My company is real easy bout this stuff. Dont have clue what root is.
Anyway I thought apps can be turned off on 4.3? Through the apps manager?

Easiest root method?

Hi
Iam starting to hate my note for every day.
I need to root to install ad block. No joy with all anoying ads over all. Even I use ad block plus without root it makes sites slow.
And oh my god to remove Samsung boatware( suggestions to methods or safe apps to remove?)
Devise updated to newest firmware. I guess I have no chance to root without tripping Knox? But I really don't care anymore. Any root methods that I can use without damaging the phone? As long as it works.
I appreciate any advice^^
No more Samsung Devises for me. At least never at full price.

Depends what your latest firmware is on your device as to IF you trip KNOX, tbh if you aren't fussed about a tripped KNOX and don't care (much like me and lots of others) then just use CF-AutoRoot simplest method now.
It is mj7

If MJ7 no RDLV(KNOX safe) method (unless bootloader is MJ1-3 or so) -- So CF-AutoRoot it'll have to be. Well that's what I am aware of at least. Unless someone else chimes in with an alternative(?)

I can't say I have ever heard of anyone messing up the installation process before. It's load the apk to your SD card, install it to your phone and then tapping the install button once you open it. That's it.
As long as your root method installs busybox and your SU app disables Knox, you should be fine.

Trying to load a custom recovery on a locked bootloader could mess up your phone. Safestrap was made for our phones. Read up a bit you'll see we can't do normal custom recoveries and we can't flash normal roms cause we're locked. Only thing we can do is root and safe strap. I'll suggest odin nb1 update to nc1 root. The reason I say odin to nb1 is because right now you don't have a recovery at all due to you trying to install cwm or twrp.

Do you have an AT&T S4? If so then no. It will not load if you try. Until someone figures how to crack the locked bootloader, we are stuck with ROMs that use stock Samsung (you'll also hear them referred to as TouchWiz or TW) kernels. I believe CM uses their own custom one.
I am able to use the Google Edition one because a user modified it to work on aTouchWiz kernel, and even then things like USB file transfer does not work.
I do not believe anyone has done the same for CM.

Yes I have the at& t s4. And that sucks I was really looking forward to flashing cm 11s. I don't care for the knox being ticked off being that I'm on no contract. Do you think I can use Odin or something to revert back to 4.2 safely without bricking the device. I hate touch wiz. And the battery drains quickly plus the phone gets hot when used for a while

Won't this look the bootloader cause I read downgrades are practically unsafe on this device. If not than I'd much rather go back to 4.2 so I can load a custom recovery being that u don't mind tripping knox. So long that it doesn't Brick or render the phone use less

Odining back to NB1 will not trip Knox. Also, I believe downgrading to 4.2 will not touch your bootloader, if it were that easy we'd all be rocking CM.
You could run this ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2767026
Its technically not a TW ROM, but it has its quirks. It was never intended to work on locked bootloader phones, but it has been retrofitted on to them.
Wrote this if you would like a guide on how I got 4.4.4 version up and running, it's kind of tricky.

Nb1 and nc1 are the same. Nb1 is just a small update over nb1, there isn't even a tar file for nc1 because it's such a small update. You won't be able to odin back to anything prior to nb1 unfortunately without bricking. Now I do understand the hatred of touchwiz but once you're rooted you're able to delete a lot of the garbage bloatware put on by Samsung and AT&T. This makes the phone so much better along with super long battery life. I've been able to get 4.5 hours of on screen time and about 16 - 17 hours of off the plug time like this.
When deleting bloat you can easily Google and find lists of what people have deleted off their phones using titanium backup (amazing app, let's your freeze or delete what you don't want). Also one thing I found out which is dumb. Deleting Samsung hub breaks auto rotation (what one has to do with the other I'll never know) but you can download the file needed to fix that here

I've had my touchwized sgs4 for about 3 weeks now and can say I'm not as upset with it as I thought I would be. Let me know if you have any questions about certain things. I've found a lot of workarounds and little edits here and there to get my phone a lot closer to how I want it.

Nope. Bootloader and knox are completely different. Knox will just give annoying messages once tripped. Bootloader without unlock we're pretty much dead in the water. There has been some talk about ways to possibly unlock the bootloader so it's definitely being worked on. I've also read that the black hat even (hackers convention) might have something promising. Also anything that is done on the s5 could very well apply to the s4. It's all just a matter of time

Phone freezing

Hey XDA community. I recently got a Galaxy Note 3 Verizon and have been having some issues. Randomly my phone will freeze then reboot. It's typically when playing games that are graphic intensive. I cleared the cache, done 2 factory reset, and uninstalled and reinstalled all apps giving me issues. It seems to be doing better now but it recently froze while browsing chrome. I was wondering if this was a known issue and how other people fixed it. I read somewhere that I should root and rom my phone since the factory firmware caused a problem with someone else. So any tips or thoughts would greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Ok so next question then. I am planning on maybe sending it to samsung for the factory warranty. I would like to try roming it first to see if that fixes it, but not if they are going to be able to tell and void the warranty. So is the reversal process possible on this phone so that they will never know it was rooted? Or is there a counter that they will be able to see?

If the previous owner rooted it properly he/she shouldn't have tripped knox. If you'd like to check put your phone in download mode and check. Power off phone then restart holding power, vol down and home. If you'd like to to restore and send it in then you'd use Odin to restore with the files here....http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47400062&postcount=1 as long as you're on MJE use the MJE factory tar file. Make sure you use retail if you're on a retail phone or you'll possibly brick it. If you decide to upgrade use the NC2 method and if it continues to act up you can go to stock with the MJE version just to keep it simple.
Ok so I checked and it says Knox 0x0. I am assuming that means it hasn't been tripped. Now is there a root method that will avoid tripping Knox?

Mine was doing this brand new unrooted. Exchanged it for a new one and the problem went away. There are lemons out there. Take it back to the Verizon store before it's too late.
Yeah I got it from someone else and I'm going to have to do the factory warranty I believe. I appreciate the info.
