Do I need root? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am waiting for note 3 to arrive. Ordered by my company.
I have a S2 now and have flashed many roms and was always rooted.
Now I run stock rom rooted only to freeze apps.
Having read a lot about knox and its warranty void, I wonder do I need root just to freeze apps? Can it be done without root?
EJ

No you can not freeze apps on a non root device but if it is a company phone you need to talk to your it-manager if you are allowed to do so. For Security reasons

Thx.
My company is real easy bout this stuff. Dont have clue what root is.
Anyway I thought apps can be turned off on 4.3? Through the apps manager?

Root without custom padlock

Hey guys. I know 3 different methods of rooting i9505(motochoper, cf auto root and pre-rooted roms). But apparently all of them makes your phone turns to a custom status and showing a custom padlock on boot. Does anyone knows a root method that keeps the phone official? Cause I remember that on my old galaxy s2, I rooted my phone using a very simple method, flashing a temporary cwm from external SD card and flashing a busy box that gived me root. Anyone knows if is it possible on s4? Thanks guys

Hi,
Using these Pre-rooted ROMS , it keeps the phone "Official" as long as you do not install anything custom.

Thanks a lot. Do you know if using those pre rooted roms OTA updates still works? And if it is, update will unroot the device? Again, thank you so much

Hi,
Yes, you can still get OTA.
But I am not sure why you would do that when the [OP] will keep the ROMS up-to-date anyway.
And yes , you would lose root if you updated.

N7105 4.3 upgrade UK users

Has anyone updated to 4.3 official using any of the roms from sammobile? I see the nordic countries 4.3 is available, I normally use either this, the German or Swedish version, I've even used a Hong Kong one before now lol, but with the recent changes Sammy have made regarding knox and location lock etc, I'm a bit dubious to upgrade.
They normally just work, just checking this is still the case before I end up with an expensive paperweight.
There is a thread somewhere by chainfire with a fix to sammys region lock. The lion rom is pretty much stock with nox removed, you just have to use devil's kernel for wifi

Cheers mate. I flashed it the other day haven't got around to posting an update yet.
Yes it has knox, but I'm not going to be rooting this device because I use it for sky and a few other apps that require unrooted.
Impressions are good so far. Everything is smooth and all my apps are working as they were before, including the sky sports app which got an update recently to work with 4.3.
One thing to note though, if you use allshare cast dongle. It has a problem working with 4.3 devices that have been updated. So if you run into this issue the fix is to do a factory reset.
There is a workaround for rooted devices on here, it's in the S4 section.
A bit of a pain having to reset I know but seems to be the only solution for unrooted devices that run into it.

Hi mate
I'm also using the sky go app, and on stock 4.1 I've just been using ota rootkeeper to toggle root when needed. I really need root for the viper audio mod.
I'm just wondering which 4.3 ROM you've got it to work on? With 4.1.2 it NEEDS to be stock ROM and kernel for sky go to work. If I upgrade I want to get a ROM without knox, but any custom ROM won't work.
Please let me know as right I'm sticking to 4.1.2.
Thanks

There weren't any custom rom's available for the 7105 that were stock with knox/location lock removed when I last checked (may be different now?). I just used the nordic rom from sammobile.
If there's none available I think you'll need to wait for a dev to rip the rom and remove knox if you don't want it. Unless you have the time and skills to diy I got the skills but not the time, unfortunately
As I said, I'm not bothered about knox at the moment. I was more bothered by location lock, but I've not had any issue so far.

Why not just flash the bootloader from DN3 it works with all the official roms and is knox free?

Yeah I will probably do that at some point.
I'm assuming I can restore my nandroid backup to 4.1.2 if I'm not happy?
The xposed mod unfortunately didn't work... Thanks anyway
Some apps are funny as to what they decide is a security risk. Sky are so far up Apple's arse they tend to look for anything that's NOT as the manufacturer released as a security issue. It's actually bollocks but try telling them that.
My other Note 2 is rooted and running 4.3 without all the bs. But most of the apps I need simply won't install/run due to idiotic requirements of the app provider. Hence why I have a 2nd note 2 which has been rooted but I had to unroot and reset the flash counter to get these apps to work. Guess Sammy aren't too fussed, they did get 2 sales from me lol

Knox info

Random question, but as I'm upgrading from the s3 I'm new to knox.
If I root, will knox keep warning me and getting in the way of my general phone usage?

Hi,
I did upgrade from S3 to S5, I also root my device immediatly
So, Knox won't jump at you if you're rooted, yet *I think* that you'll be warned when trying to actually using it..
I'm not sure because Knox can be disable, and along the way of transfering my data , knox was disabled (i think Supersu apps does that), else I'm sure you can find how to disable it somewhere on xda !!

You can now root without knox tripping.

Wasn't sure if any of you knew about this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783157
Basically you can now root the S5 and NOT trip knox.
Really it seems to be most phones that are 4.2.2 work.
This doesn't get you a boot loader etc. but gives root at least for those wanting to not risk warranty and get the bloat off.

After the simplest root ever, how does one go about a custom recovery? Do we still have to odin that or is it flashable?

If you do custom recovery you will trip knox making this method for you to root having been useless and you should have used one of the other options that does it all at once hah.
Can you use this root method and get the hotspot mod working without a custom recovery?

You can but you need to be aware that you can get stuck in a boot loop. But if you are willing to take the risk.
Download the Odex version that matches your system, this is critical. Extract the services.jar and services.odex files. Use a root explorer to copy them to /system/framework. Change permissions to rw-r-r. Reboot and it will either work or not.

[Q] Rooting?

I recently purchased a new Samsung Galaxy S5 from India. I would like to know if I can root it, if yes, how? And what are the risks of rooting it? And what to do after rooting!
Thanks in advance.
Sent from my SM-G900H using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Of course you can root it.
The risk is loosing your warranty, which is unavoidable. If you can't live without warranty, then don't.
There is alot of things you can do with root.
I personally think it's a bad idea too root SM-G900H, since the other version can be rooted without loosing warranty.
