s5 mobile Hotspot widget - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I use my mobile hotspot every day. I have yet to find a widget to turn it on from the home screen on the s5. I've tried several from Google play but none work. Currently I have to go through settings, other networks, etc to be able to turn it on. Has anyone found one that works with current s5 software?

So apparently there isn't one. Would anyone be willing to make one?

Have you tried downloading widgets from Play Store? Maybe, some of it will work.

hello
you can use the icon in the status bar :
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
and rearrange icons to have this in the very first icons.
or setup a widget with Widgetsoid https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jim2

I'm not talking about wifi, but the mobile hotspot for using my phone for internet. There isn't a hotspot icon in the drop-down menu. I have tried multiple widget apps from the play store, at least 10 different ones. Some don't work at all, some actually check subscription status but then don't turn it on. Yes I'm on a valid data plan because I can turn it on manually and it works just fine. Something is set up different with the s5 that doesn't let the previous versions work. Something will have to be made specifically for the s5. I even emailed the developer at beautiful widgets who told me it was not possible for an app to toggle the hotspot. Just got this email a few minutes ago btw..

hi.
So I've misunderstood your question. You want to share your mobile connexion (3G, 4G,...) to other people, who have to connect via wifi to your phone to gain access to this connexion ?
There is an icon named "wifi hotspot" in the statut bar. You have to swipe horizontaly the icons bar to gain access to other icons. You also can hit the icon to edit and rearrange order.

Yes, that's exactly what I'm looking for but that icon is missing from my Verizon based s5...
But that is what I'm looking for

Weird... try to use widgetsoid. With this you will be able to put a widget with the wifi hotspot, activate by simple click. I've done it, it's working.

Here pics on how to setup, once widgetsoid is installed:
Choose switcher widget:
Select hotspot wifi
Click apply (you can choose colors,...)
You will have the button on screen. Click to activate, button will enlightenment:

Sadly it does the same thing as the rest I tried. It checks my subscription status, but doesn't turn the hotspot on.
Btw, I'd like to thank you for your help so far, even if nothing has worked yet, I appreciate your trying

Well... maybe time to flash another rom...

Was really hoping to avoid that. I rooted my first Android years ago and found it was more hassle than it was worth to me. I'll probably just live with it till someone makes a toggle that works.

Hello. Seems here a solution: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2733065 .
As I can understand, your operator has disabled this option.

I too am annoyed by this on my AT&T S5. I've tried many toggles, Tasker, NFC, etc... Oddly a few times I can get it to turn on if I use the toggle to turn it off then back on. But it only works once for any given toggle, after that nothing. I use it several times a day for my Nexus 7 so a quick toggle would be nice.
The best I can find is a shortcut to the settings sub-page where the Hotspot on/off toggle is. I use Nova launcher so I don't know if this is possible elsewhere. Long press home screen->shortcuts->activities (Nova only option?)->settings->Tethering and WifI Hotspot.
This at least gets me 2 steps to hotspot, beats 4 steps I guess. Perhaps AT$T and Verizon wanted to hide the hotspot option figuring many would never look for it and therefore use less Data.

Not sure why they would want us to use less data since the more we use, the more money they make. It really surprises me that I don't find more people unhappy about this.

it's too bad that Verizon disabled the ability to use a Widget to turn on the wifi hot spot. I use it often and its a pain in the you know what to have to go through a number of screens just to turn it on or off.
Wish they would allow a Widget or Notification bar icon. They load our phones up with crap then leave out important features like this.

Try installing power toggles from the app store. I use it and it works great! Hope this helps.

I use Desktop VisualizeR, which can change apps icons and hide labels, and resize the icons, plus some more, and works with the stock launcher

Yes I am happy with Touchwizz, I am rooted using the Omega rom and have customised alot, but i need to remove the app names from the homescreen and app drawer to give it a cleaner look
Surely one of the great Developers have come up with a mod other-than those launchers?

When I was trying to change the Label, first i tried to just clear the name and create the shortcut but I realised you have to add a space to get it too work if you know what i mean...

Given that you were asking several months ago, this may not be of interest to you anymore. But a few lost souls may actually use the search engine in your footsteps.. i see this question asked three or four times a year.
So here are the various options available to someone who wants to get rid of the home screen icon labels. You can use, as you discovered, a shortcut or folder app such as Desktop visualizer to replicate home screen icons without labels. This app won't create an icon without a label, but if you type a blank space you create the visual effect of no label.
You could do as most do.. which is install a custom launcher. Nova is one popular choice. One recent custom launcher is very, very close to stock, but with added features - a sort of super-Touchwiz here.
Or you can look for customized stock launchers. This would be exactly what you originally asked for.. a stock TW launcher that has just had one or two tweaks made to it. It's usually dock icons that most frequently have their labels removed. But you will sometimes see home screen labels and (rarely) app drawer labels removed as well. Other common mods include enabling wallpaper scrolling and using a different number of icons on a row. I've seen a dozen or more people offer modified stock launchers for various devices i.e. TW versions.
Or you could decompile the stock launcher and make the change yourself. It's not that hard and there are tutorials for Jelly Bean at least. And probably for Kitkat too if you search a while. For anyone unwilling to try modding their own launcher.. well then you can't really claim that you "need" the change that badly, can you?
TW icon labels are removed by making the "text box" too small to hold the label. The net effect being that no label is displayed. This is one of the tutorials on making the change on a JB TW launcher. A secondary guide on using a decompiler like apktool can be found here.

Hide icon names in home screen
Open TouchWiz30Launcher\res\values-mdpi\styles.xml
Code:
Find <item name="android:layout_marginBottom">4.0dip</item> (the value may be diffrent, so simply look for layout_marginBottom)
This value depends on the cellHeight from the previous patch. it equals cellHeight - 57
if you have a 4 line homescreen, then set it to 43
if you're making a 5 line homescreen, then set it to 23

Many of the element names changed with Kitkat, but the general procedure will be the same. At a guess, after you decompile the launcher e.g. Touchwizhome.apk or SecLauncher.apk, etc., look for the string name i.e. android:layout_margin_bottom in Touchwizhome.apk > /res/values/styles.xml. And it should reference the actual variable(s) that you need to modify in the /res/values/dimens.xml file.
I hope that helps someone out.

Meizu MX5 and push notification issues

I bought them for almost two months and overall satisfied with everything except one thing - push notification issue. This is apply to all apps that owner need to be notified such as LINE, WhatsApp or even Gmail. It would happen around 1-3 minutes after your phone standby. Delay could be from 5 minutes to 15 minutes and more. No "Power saving" and "Wifi sleep" enabled. This was happen a much less when I was with 4..5.2.5A rom and much more when I upgraded to 4.5.2.7A. You could see messages only if you open those app manually most of the times. It was ridiculous
Here are solutions I tried and non of them work so far.
1. Went to Security --> Permissions --> Set "LINE" / "Google Services Framework" / "Google Account Manage" as auto restart.
2. above + Went to Security --> Power Saving --> Set "LINE" available to run while idle. Two setting simultaneously and still not work.
3. above two + lock "LINE" application to work on background. Three combination still doesn't ring a bell.
4. Roll back to 4.5.2.4A / 4.5.2.2A / 4.5.2.1A and still the same. (4.5.2.5A has been merged by Meizu developer so non available for download at the time.)
5. Try install almost every Launcher, every notification apps and even "push notification fixer" (for non-root) and still the same.
Do you have any idea or recommendation for a custom rom or a custom fix for this issue?
Hi.
I have just the same issue with recently bought Meizu M2 mini: Hangouts, Skype, Gmail - no notifications.... It's really frustrating
I have never had notification problems with M2 and MX5, this is what I do:
Security App, permission, Launch. Here every app to notify. Google stuff also.
Security app, powersaving. The same
Also this apps blocked in the multitask
Settings, wifi, advanced, wifi sleep disabled
Lock the app in ram via multitasking bar, this will not let the app to turn off.
anyone find a solution to this?

How to enable wifi calling in MM

Marshmallow comes with a new native wifi calling feature, but it's hidden on Moto G3. Here's how to enable it:
Step 1
download and install this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.szalkowski.activitylauncher
Step 2
run the app and click the pull-down menu up top. choose "all apps"
scroll to settings and expand the list. scroll down to wifi calling:
{

}
Long press the wifi calling option and select "create a shortcut"
Step 3
navigate to your home screen and find the new wifi calling icon. click it and turn on wifi calling
Awesome!!! When I go and turn it goes on but going back into shortcut it's off. Any ideas?

we may need root to be able to keep it enabled, or possibly just have it set as on by default with a custom rom.
Out if curiosity I tried this, and got the same thing as well on CM13. As soon as I leave the activation screen it shuts off.

If the features is in your device but hidden, probably... If it's not capable, disabled, or removed, no. All activity launcher does is create a shortcut for an app or activity that's already installed on your device, it doesn't add new features other than its own (to create shortcuts to things).

I have the 3g and on TMobile. They have wifi calling.
Unlike the iPhone that actually has a setting for turning it on and off, the 3g has no such feature. It is a feature of MM. Don't understand if you can turn it on with activity launcher why it doesn't work. Doesn't even stay on. I know with TMobile and the iPhone, first time you turn it on you have to verify your address for 911 purposes. So I guess only certain phones actually support wifi calling, even though MM has it built in.

LED Notification and AOD on/off programmatically?

Does anyone have any clue as to what activity or intent to send to turn on/off LED Notification and Always On Display on the S7 Edge?
I make extensive use of AutoMagic Premium (http://automagic4android.com) and Lightning Launcher Pro (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.pierrox.lightning_launcher_extreme) and their collective abilities allow me to automatically change home screens (like when I connect to the Bluetooth in my car) and start activities and such. I'd really prefer not to load yet another app to do these things but, instead, just send an intent that turns on or off LED Notification at the appropriate times and turn on/off AOD. I've been through the list of activities in quite a few apps including those in Settings and the Samsung apps (via Activity Launcher, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.szalkowski.activitylauncher, and a few other such apps) haven't found anything that will actually do the job.
I've tried searching for help but haven't found a good set of search terms that'll yield useful results -- everything directs me to Settings or a review of the S7 Edge and what AOD is or what color the LED flashes
For the LED, you can use Tasker with the Samsung LED controller plug in:

There are some other apps that support Tasker plug-ins, but I don't know if the ones you mention do or not.

Thanks, works great! Automagic works with Tasker plug-ins and Lightning Launcher can be driven by Tasker (and compatible) programs so I've set up a little task driven by time-of-day to automatically have LL display my Night home screen and turn off the notification LEDs. I've also set up another task that gets triggered when I long press the Back key on my Night home screen in LL that sets "Day" mode and turns the notification LEDs back on.
Samsung LED controller doesn't seem to affect Always On Display. Does anyone know of anything I can use to set/reset this without going to Settings? I'm using Good Lock and AOD isn't currently available in the quick settings.

I had completely forgotten about Secure Settings, thank you! The plugin works with Automagic, too.
I bought Tasker back when it first came out and used it then but Tasker's UI and lack of decent documentation finally got the better of me and I haven't used it nor any of the plugins i used/bought for it for a couple of years. Automagic has its own quirks but I guess I'm used to themm Maybe I should take another look at Tasker? Hmmm...
Anyway, thank you for the Secure Settings pointer! Work great and, with that, my quest is over. Well, almost Just wondering if anyone else has any other suggestions? Development seems to have stopped on Secure Settings and, while it does everything I need it to do, I'd like to have another option, just in case.
I have found that you can find some good Tasker solutions by searching on Reddit. I agree that there should be more documentation for Tasker.

There are good solutions on Reddit and there are a lot of good solutions here on XDA...there's even a Tasker Tips and Tricks forum at http://forum.xda-developers.com/u/tasker-tips-tricks! My problem is I just don't have the time anymore to do that much reading! Learning new container architectures and new language (GO, anyone?) and new (to me) delivery facilities (Chef, ANT) are taking up most of my time nowadays
Well, thanks to the pointers and apps given to me by the contributors to this thread, I've managed to accomplish everything with just Automagic! I'll document what I did in case anyone else is looking for a solution. I have no doubt that I could accomplish the same thing with Tasker but I'm using Automagic so that's what I'll document.
I can (un)set the system setting LED Indicator by using Automagic's "Set System Settings" action and manipulating 4 settings in the System category: led_indicator_missed_event, led_indicator_low_battery, ed_indicator_voice_recording, and led_indicator_charing (note, no "g" -- it's not charging, it's charing!).
I can (un)set Always On Display by using Automagic's "Set System Settings" action and manipulating a single setting in the System category: aod_mode.
Thanks, everyone, for your help!

Thanks for this. I hadn't found that option in Secure Settings. It would be nice if they listed all the options alphabetically, instead of randomly.
Tried to switch AOD on and off on my S7 using macrodroid and secure settings but the AOD doesn't turn on when I use 1 or off when I use 0.
Any help please?

mobile data tethering - portable wifi hotstop turning off

hi does anyone know how to keep the portable wifi hotspot on !!!
I recently was travelling back in my car which had the MOBILE DATA on and TETHERED to my car sat nav for LIVE traffic updates and speed camera locations, but after about 30 mins te PORTABLE WI-FI hotspot switches off???
....so no live updates for the rest of the journey -- approx 2 hours
I don't know if this is something to do with being in a bad mobile network coverage area or a setting within the phone?
android 6.0.1
advanced wi-fi setting - keep wifi on during sleep ON
display sleep after 30mins? - max and don't know if this has any effect
screen will never sleep while charging ON
I have searched the internet but cannot find any relevant help or any apps which could prevent the timeout (lots for screen time out)
thanks for any help
kevin
I use my Yotaphone as an Internet modem, with the hot-spot running for for a long time (months now) .
I haven't experienced your issue, but use Tasker to turn om WiFi hot-spot every hour or so.

Thanks for your reply - will have a look at using tasker (but not sure if you need a rooted phone)
No need for root when using Tasker for hot-spot. [emoji846]

thanks again - I have downloaded tasker but don't really know where to start - could you provide your profile? task and scene? for the hotspot turn on or point me in some direction
thanks

Running on Android 6 and Android 8
# Task
Net > WiFi Tether > On
# Profile
Depends really on your usecase. You could have a timer profile that runs every 15 minutes or so that runs the task above.
once again thanks for your prompt reply. I have put the task values in (think that was simple enough)
the profile I set a timer for 5 minutes from now 5 pm to 8 pm because it appears to be switched off around 10 minutes to see if it worked
at 5 pm I got a dialogue box "can modify system settings" tasker - allow modify system settings with the slider button on? & I now have a notification saying no active profiles? after 5 pm - tasker is on in the settings and profile slider switch is on? AND HOTSPOT STILL SWITCHED OFF -GRRRRRR android
don't know what else I can do at the moment?
thanks
Start with the task only first.
With the hot-spot off, try running the task itself in Tasker using the play button.
When the task itself is working you can try working on the profile.

hi
think you got me there. had to change the profile time edit to every 2 minutes (smallest repeat value)because the hotspot was switching off after ten minutes then I would have to wait for a further 5 for tasker to work
notification still says no active profile but guess it's not actually running for long ie only looks/operates at the 2-minute intervals?
once again thank you for your help -- cheers
Really weird though that the hot-spot is turning itself off.
Have you checked in the settings that you don't have a timeout?

hopefully, settings checked ---
wifi keep on during sleep - always (if applicable?)
display sleep - 30minutes max after activity
cannot see anything else that might apply (nothing in the tethering & portable hotspot section)
