I just got an Epic.
Reading several threads across the Galaxy line, there is apparently a variation in screen color temperatures. From my readings, I see a pattern where perhaps the newer/replacement units have yellower screens. At the same time, those newer units also get darker in auto brightness mode than the older units.
From my own observation, the color temp gets cooler as the brightness increases.
Is it possible that Samsung tweaked the auto brightness so that the phone now gets darker in order to save the battery? So perhaps the different color temp observed are a function of how bright the screen is?
I don't care for the yellowish screen on my new Epic. I like a cooler/colder screen. Comparing the Epic next to my LCD Evo and Touch Pro 2, it is outright yellow. Comparing the 3 phones next to my Nexus One, the N1's screen looks pink. (I can post some pics tomorrow).
Bottom line, I'm trying to decide if I should try to return/exchange the phone for another and hope for the best. I read that there are some potential software solutions out of XDA, but I prefer to have a phone that is natively "cold".
Any input would be great.

Mine's pretty yellow. :-( In brighter light, it is not a problem. Darker screen is the result of a software update. Got mine on launch day.

Thanks for the information. Before the software update, when the screen didn't get as dark, did it appear less yellow at the [pre-update] low brightness?
In other words, does the screen now look more yellow than ever since the update and darker screen?

I got my Epic on Oct 1st, and I haven't noticed this yellowish at all, but maybe I need to do a thorough side by side with an older model?

Just as yellow as always. Post-update, the screen dims more. At this point, it appears yellower. My Captivate also now dims more, post-update, and seems bluer at dimmest setting.

The only time I've had problems with my screen was when my phone had gotten damage from water. I'm on my 2nd epic and this one doesn't have any yellowish tints. Only about a week old now.

I picked up my Epic on 9/29 and don't see any yellow tint at all. I'm not an expert here but I think I would notice a tint like that. My blacks are very clear and dark also. I did notice that it seemed to run on auto brightness a little darker than it had...that was probably the D-118 update after I had it for only a few days.
I will follow this thread and see where it goes.
I don't think the screen color variation is based on release date. I have two of them since 8/30. One of them has a yellowish tint compared to the other. They both have the same DI18 update.
It seems like a coin-toss what screen color comes. I wish we have a tool that would allow easy color temperature adjustment.
I read a thread about a way using a modified kernel, but it would be nice to have an .apk that works (even if it requires root).
I got one on launch day that had more of a blue tint to it. I got another one last week that was a refurb, and it definitely is more yellow.
Weird. I just got mine today and it's very cool (read: blue) compared to my Evo... being a photo guy, this drives me nuts. I prefer warmer diplays.

I have one of the cooler screens, and I kinda like it.
My thoughts:
1) Samsung is trying to extend the life of the blue oLEDs by altering the color temperature of screens. Since this seems to be happening independently of ROM version, it's probably something they're doing with firmware.
2) (IMO More Likely) The screens on different phones came from different assembly lines or different production runs, and have a slight variance in color production. The production date of the phone wouldn't necessarily matter in this case.

I currently have it running on my ROM. It adds a new "very low" brightness setting a the bottom that's much dimmer than even the lowest one available in DI18. (Note: it doesn't interpolate levels between them, either. Meaning there is a big jump in brightness from the voodoo lowest level to the DI18 lowest level, which is the next "notch" up on the slider.) It also adds a brightness level at the very highest brightness, which noticeably makes the display warmer. (The highest and next-to-highest brightness notches are the same brightness, the difference being the highest one is warmer.) At this point of its development, it's really of no use if you want to make your screen warmer at all brightness levels.
At any rate, the project leads me to believe that, with further development, we could have an app that allows us to freely change all the color settings for the display for all brightness levels, save them to profiles, etc.
The idea of the screen getting warmer as you decrease its brightness might be a natural phenomena, or just perceptual. In my experience, colors usually seem warmer as you decrease the intensity of the light. This is even true of light on a physical object.
My screen looks awesome. No yellowing or anything. I wonder if there is a difference based on who made the screen for that particular Galaxy S phone? I remember reading an article when all the Galaxy S phones started rolling out saying that Samsung was having trouble with the manufacturing of the AMOLED screens. Perhaps they started cutting corners.
However, there also seems to be issues with auto-brightness, etc...I have that disabled on my phone and the brightness set on its lowest setting (which is plenty bright for me and all my viewing needs) which may be the difference? But, I have cranked it up from time to time just to show others and I still don't notice any yellowing.
Is there a specific test image or something where one could view that would show/exaggerate the effect people are talking about? I would be curious to see...

Here is a quick picture taken by a Touch Pro 1. Sorry about the quality. I can try to take better ones if there is interest.
From left to right - Evo, Epic, Nexus 1, Touch Pro 2. All with auto-brightness on.
In real life:
The Evo looks whiter (cooler)
The Epic looks much yellower (warmer, almost greenish)
The N1 doesn't look as pink as it appears, but looks the darkest
The Touch Pro 2 looks the whitest (coolest)
To my eyes, the Evo/Touch Pro 2 looks good. Although the picture shows the Epic looking pleasant and only slightly warmer, the white elements (clouds in wallpaper, browser backgrounds etc.) look yellow/green.
Edit: Notice the Menu, Home, Back, Search menu LEDs look whiter than the screen. See the contrast between the two makes the screen look yellower.
I've owned 3 Epics since launch day. First one had a good screen, 2nd one had a yellow tint, 3rd was perfect.
The build dates of the first 2 were 10.08 and my current one is 10.09.

By perfect, do you mean that it is not yellowish? It's interesting that the first two phones with the same build date has two different color screens...
The Epic I have has a 10.10 build date. It's yellow at dimmed levels and color temp gets cooler as it brightens up.
Okay so I bought a new Moto X (2014) last week In India. Everything about the phone is great. It was already on lollipop. But when I decrease the brightness to below 30-40% the display gradually becomes more and more purple. And with Adaptive Brightness on and in a dark room, it's so purple that the green and yellow shades appear grey or black. I know amoled panels have this problem at very low brightness and apparently many Nexys 6 users are also facing it. However I didn't see many complaints here in the Moto X forum.
So if you have this problem please vote in the poll above. Then I can ask them for a replacement. Thank you.
I'd later add some photos of the screen.
P.S. If you are experiencing this, please add some photos so that people can compare it with their displays.
ok i have this problem too, but when I'm in the bed and reading random news this purple display isn't disturbing me. i can feel it relax more my eyes. so i can say i take advantage from a bug
I don't think this is a bug, way easier on the eyes in the dark, perhaps some kind of a feature on AMOLED and Lollipop. The Nexus 6 has it, too, i think.
I don't know if anyone else noticed that in direct sun light, the screen goes extra bright - like indoor bright + boost?
This is not a feature. It's an issue with amoled displays. That's why Samsung limits the lowest brightness to a higher level. While Moto X seems to go way down. I just want to know if everyone's having this. Then it's okay. But if it's not everyone then there're some good amoled panels out there and we are getting the bad ones.

Red LEDs use much less power than other colors so when the brightness is down low the displays looks like it has a slightly red tint to it. While Samsung does keep their best displays for themselves the lack of a red tint is not due to that but is instead due to not letting the brightness go as low on their displays.

That's what I meant. Not quite the best choice of word, I guess. But if that was the case, everyone should have had the pink tint at low brightness. Do you mean the ones who are not getting it are either lying or have Moto X's with LCD panels?

Well, only 2 out of 11 people have reported no color distortion. And remember that while you're asking "Is there a purple tint?" they're answering the question "Have you noticed a purple tint?"
What I've noticed is that when Adaptive Brightness is on, the display gets super dark and causes the purple tint. When I turn Adaptive Brightness off in a dark room, it actually completely loses the purple tint, and compared to my Galaxy Tab S 8.4 at lowest brightness, the screen is brighter than the Tab S. So I guess Motorola hasn't caught up with Samsung's display technology since my Tab S can actually get dimmer without such a dramatic color distortion - for my Moto X to get to a brightness level that dim, I need to turn on Adaptive Brightness (thus with the purple tint).

I wouldn't say it gets a Purple tint but rather a reddish one with adaptive light.
And I LOVE it. This way I don't have to install Lumen.CF or any other stuff. Way easier on the eyes at night and it gets reeeeeeaally dark. Just perfect!
I also love that it naturally has a lower white temperature point than other lcd/phones screens. Warmer white is cozy white.

I voted for no color distortion as my display is very very good. I can tell you there is certainly a variation in displays. A few months back someone posted about being able to see color banding and such. Those of us with really good displays do not see that. I was going to order a Pure edition to replace my unlocked XT1097 but the display is so good on it I decided not to, I doubt another one will be as good. I had 5 different Moto X 2013 models and the displays varied on each of them as well. I kept the best one and my 2014 model is still quite a bit better then the best 2013 I had.

The rest of the phone in my case feels pretty solid and well built. Also I'm getting 47k+ scores on Antutu. Hence I am having second thoughts about getting it replaced.
My PE doesn't turn purple and has better whites than my AT&T branded one. The screen on that one is awful to me but I also use a G2, iPhone 6, '13 N7, no one notices but me.

I'm pretty sure this is just a feature of the moto x2 go to Settings/Display and turn off adaptive brightness, you will see that it changes to normal

Indeed, when adaptative brightness is turned off, purple tint will not occur. However, I am not sure this is a "feature". It actually looks more like a poor implementation of auto brightness.

I use the CF Lumen app to turn down the red and green just a tad in the master mode. That makes my screen less pinkish.
I had the purple display issue in 5.0. Now I upgraded to 5.1 and the issue is gone. Colors are well balanced down to minimum available brightness.

What is the other phone? Go to settings -> display -> color mode and set color to normal, that will normalize it a little. It's set on vibrant by default. Regardless of that setting though, the screen on this phone is a "warm" one compared to others. The phone on the left is "cold" and bluish in comparison. Warm screens are a little more yellow/red, cold are blue. If the other phone is AMOLED there's your reason, but even if it's LCD, it's just tuned a bit differently. You should know that the phone on the left isn't producing a perfect white either, just a kind of white you're used to. Personally I prefer a warm screen, I find colder screens harder on my eyes.
TLDR- it's working as intended.
Unless you screwed with some settings no that isn't normal. If my whites were that yellow I'd return it. While an LCD might never be as white or black as an amoled it shouldn't look like 20 year old yellow paper either. WIth LCDs if you lower the brightness the screen will become more colored but nothing like that. You can also go compare it to some phones at the store that have LCD's and get an idea if its out of whack.
I spoke to two different support people at motorola ...one said it was normal for this phone as the screen was optimized for gaming?? .....the other said it was not normal and I should return it.
I tried using the app 'screen adjuster' to boost the blue light and it did indeed make it look white rather than yellow so it seems to be a color temperature setting so I'm still not sure wether changing the phone would make any difference and I can't compare in stores because they don't have them yet.
p.s. the other phone is an LG G2 which is LCD

If it bothers you you can go through the return process and see if another one is different. My phone looks pretty much the same next to my Galaxy Note n-7000. That's AMOLED, but AMOLED or not, screens can be bluish. For perspective, here's what white looks like for reference. Neither of the phones are producing white. One is bluish, one is yellowish. Do you notice it when you're not comparing phone screens? After a few minutes of looking at the screen, going from app to app or looking at pictures, do white things register as white?

I have it on auto-brightness at 50%
Do you notice it when you're not comparing phone screens? After a few minutes of looking at the screen, going from app to app or looking at pictures, do white things register as white?

I noticed it had a very warm color temp immediately I turned it on, and then got my other phones to compare ....it does bother me yes ...it's like having a TV with a yellowish screen ....I'm pretty sure it can be fixed with a software update and is not a hardware problem which is why I'm not sure if returning the phone would accomplish anything unless I see some other pures to compare

This is mine. I think ambient light may affect it. It looked more yellow when I was in a dark room. This is in a well lit area.

Mine is warmer color from 50% to 0%, Higher values and its very white. Didn't even notice it till I saw this post and well, it can't be unseen lol. I keep my display around 10-20% usually on the low side however at night in bed it doesn't look warm at all.

yeah, ok so it seems it is quite normal for this phone then, although from the androidcentral forum thread I posted above some screens are more yellow than others and some are actually very white, seems to depend on the batch .....i guess I'll just learn to love it :laugh:

hello, 2 days ago i bought a refurbished gs5, right out of the box i felt like there's something wrong with it..
when im looking at the screen (especially on a white background) i can see its yellow-greenish. when i tilt the phone forward and backwards (taking the bottom part of the phone closer to me/further away from me)
the colors are perfect, like my brother's lg g3. what is the deal? is the screen defective? is it normal for this type of screen? the s5's screen is brighter than the lg g3, just for the record.
when i watch youtube videos, everything is greenish, when i tilt it a little bit, it looks almost as good as my dell ultrasharp monitor.

No, it is not normal. I might as well return it and get another one. I bought a SH unit and it came with minor burn-in, but that's not as bad as the yellow-greenish tint you're mentioning. Does it happen in download mode too? Or in recovery, if it's rooted with custom recovery. If yes, time to swap it for another refurbished. If not, we'll see.

the rom is stock. after using the phone a bit, i feel this tint is just normal. its not VERY yellow, but when im watching vids faces look a bit greenish. its not critical, but not very accurate. still, when the screen is dimmed, it has a lot more contrast and looks much better than the washed out lg g3's screen (when its dimmed).
look, it might be just the way the screen looks. compared to the lg g3, is has a lot more contrast, but when im looking at images, the lg looks identical to my dell monitor (im a photographer so its very important to me), are you sure the galaxy is supposed to be accurate? are the white supposed to look as the lg? on the g3 the whites are a bit red, on the galaxy they're a bit yellow-greenish, but when i look at photos i took, the galaxy looks too warm. when i tilt it a bit, the whites turn a bit blueish, but its still better and more accurate than the yellow it normally is. are you completely sure it isnt the general look of this particular screen?
just for the record, its still yellowish in download mode

AMOLED is over-saturated because Samsung is Samsung. Check a custom kernel which will be able to let you tweak the colours. I recommend Boeffla Kernel, because it lets you modify: R G B value, saturation, Hue, Display value and Contrast. Play around with all of those settings if you want to fix it using software.

thank you my friend. just for clarification, when you view a white background at "cinema" mode (which is the most color accurate) are the whites yellowish? when viewing in "Standard" mode, the whites are pretty good, but colors are SO SATURATED. and again, thank you my friend!
To my eye, the colours look washed-out, but that is because I am used to the oversaturation of the AMOLED. And yes, the white is yellow-ish.

How can I put it, uh, the S5 seems to be fine. The G3 is more vibrant, to be honest, but there is nothing wrong with the S5 in my opinion. Again, this is through my eyes, which are very different (and slanted), because 1/2 Jap, the colours on the AMOLED are better than on the LCD. Do you have both phones at the same brightness, and the colours are set nearly the same? Because that can sometimes make the difference. Send me that image, i'll load it on my Galaxy S5 and take a picture to show you how my screen fares.

the gs5 colors arent better, they're too warm :\.. in the photo the colors arent accurate, because the screens are too bright, but the lg g3 is identical to my dell monitor, the galaxy s5 is very warm and causes images to look almost orange. i shot the image of the gs5 and the lg g3 with my dslr, so it will look different than if you shot your gs5 with a phone camera. anyway, look at the image, tell me what you see at "standard" mode, tell me if the colors of the image look warm, and if looking at a bit of an angle changes the warmth of the colors to be colder (and much more accurate). thank you mate for the help.

I see what you did there. I loaded the image on my S5 and, to sum it up, at least on my phone, with my eyes, comparing it with my 17" Samsung Syncmaster monitor, the colours on my screen look the same as in the G3 in your picture. I have my screen on Adapt Display. And in cinema mode, the colours are ~1:1 when putting my S5 next to your G3 in the picture, so yeah, your S5's screen is miscalibrated i suppose.

I loaded the image on my S5 and, to sum it up, at least on my phone, with my eyes, comparing it with my 17" Samsung Syncmaster monitor, the colours on my screen look the same as in the G3 in your picture. I have my screen on Adapt Display. And in cinema mode, the colours are ~1:1 when putting my S5 next to your G3 in the picture, so yeah, your S5's screen is miscalibrated i suppose.

If the replacement also has these problems, just quote me back. Or just quote me back and keep me updated. When I will go to one of friends' place, where they have really professional monitors, i might as well compare the colours.

ok i will, and just for the record, when you tilt your phone a bit, do the colors get colder ? or is it the same as when you look straight at it?

same as looking head-on. My particular AMOLED screen has some nice viewing angles, no colour distortion below 80 degrees of tilt. Then it starts to turn green.

im experiencing the same thing. when tilting like that the screen gets colder, just like in the video. are you completely sure its not normal? i feel like its just the way the screen is. but if you're telling me it doesnt look like in the video, im returning it.

Now with an actual example, i can confirm to you that on the white google background the screen gets colder when you tilt it like in the video. And it also has some green tinting on the bottom. Again, our eyes are different, and this is my retina, my phone and my brain.

true.. one last thing, i have stock 6.0.1, when i change the display mode to "cinema" from "standard", the colors are accurate, but the whites are yellowish, when i change it to "standard", the whites are white, but the colors are over saturated and unrealistic. do you experience the same thing?
when i change to "dynamic", colors and whites on the internet, photos, video and such, look amazing and almost identical to my dell, but in games it looks just like standard mode, over saturated and too bright. im frustrated!

In dynamic, it changes according to what android thinks its on screen, or rather said, what colour profiles Samsung defined for games, internet, pictures, movies and so on. Unfortunately, with the properties of OLED, cinema mode tends to have rubbish whites. That's because the panel is OLED and your DELL is LCD, no matter if its TN, VA or IPS. The difference in technology is the base of your "issue". I keep my S5 on Adapt Display and forget about colour accuracy because AMOLEDs are natively over-saturated.

yeah then i think my gs5 is perfectly "normal" lol. ill just keep it at adaptive, its the most accurate for photos. by the way, my friend's gs6 looks a lot better. in cinema mode the whites are actually white, and the colors are better than the s5. i guess samsung improved it over the s5. i only paid 220$ for the phone (its considered cheap in my country, prices are horrible here) and i have a one year warranty. ill just keep it, its better than the lg g3 in sunlight, and when i dim the galaxy to 40%, its brighter and nicer to look at than the lg g3 at 60%. weird. well, thank you for the help, i guess im done here haha

I was fortunate enough to receive my phone today, and it was working amazingly through out the day I've had it.
Sometime during the night the phone took on a sharp red tint however, and nothing I have thought to do has reverted it to normal! I do not have the blue light mode on, Night mode is also off. I attempted to adjust the basic color scale as well as the advanced scale but the display doesn't actually change, it stays sharp red! After playing with all of the display and accessibility settings I could find, I tried to do a settings reset and a factory reset yet the problem persisted. Keep in mind that the red tint is only when I am using Vivid mode, under the Natural color profile the display colors are fine.
So after all of this i contacted Samsung support, and their answer was that I should look to return the phone, apparently a factory reset is the only answer they could of provided. I asked if they could help me re-install the firmware remotely or anything of the sort, but sadly they just read a script over there. Makes me wish i was sticking with a pixel, at least Googles support actually Tries
Has anyone else whose got the phone experienced this yet? i saw a bit that both the S8 and S9 had issues at some point or another with a red display, but I couldn't find a resolution for the issue.
Yup... I've got the red tint as well. That was the first thing I noticed after powering on the phone. It's more visible at the bottom of the screen for me.
Changing the colour mode from vivid to natural makes it more than required yellowish for my preference.
Am waiting for one of my friends to receive his S10+ and I'll compare his screen with mine. If it's too bad, I'll contact Samsung.
For the time being it's not bothering me much as am using dark background and black keyboard theme.
Folks, remember that there is a bit of natural color shift that occurs in these screens (ie: hold the phone straight up at your face and then tip it backward and forward a bit and it'll seem almost iridescent and travel up and down the screen). This is to be expected. I, too, have this occurrence but it isn't anything like the red/pink splotching on the S8+
I have the same issue with pink tint when rhe phone is not upright. I have checked more phones in Samsung store and everyone has it.

You probably have set blue light filter night mode to come on at night time. That would make the screen look that way.

There is no denying the screen has a pink tinge to it compared to the S9 plus. I wonder if it has something to do with the lowered blue light emissions that Samsung said these new screens had.
I'm definitely getting the noticeable pink tinge when viewing at any angle aside from straight on. Note 9 didn't do this at all
I am disappointed so far with the display on my S10+
I have also found it to have a red sort of tint, if I turn the phone to one side it looks a lot better
Could this have anything to do with the screen protector applied at factory?
Compared to my S8 the whites are so much better and whiter on the S8, also noticed a lot more screen/display settings on the S8...

So I managed to fix my problem, the red display issue seemed to of been tied to my backup from my previous phone (a Pixel 3XL). I did a clean factory reset without restoring the backup, and the error went away.

This. Comming from note 9 as well I experience the same thing exactly. The colors seem somewhat washed out compared to the clarity of note 9. Absolute white is warmer with a hint of pink or yellow.
What i did is to put vivid mode, red and green both low and blue max. That seems to be the closest to my note 9.
I also went back to a Samsung experience store to change my device as I wasn't happy with the result. After inspection and comparison with other units they told me there is nothing wrong with it and would refuse to change it. All the s10 where similar to each other tbh. I just like the colors on my note 9 a lot more.
They also told me that the new screens have different colors compared to older devices to help out with the night sleep. Something that folks over displaymate also verify on their review.

My screen is absolutely perfect in vivid mode, you shouldn't restore updates when configuring it.
Has anyone experienced any issues with Smart Switch? That's what I was going to do when I FINALLY get mine. Im coming from an S8+.
I put this here because some people said when they restored their phone they got the red tint.
Screen looks fine to me. I have seen pink screens in past devices but this one is paper white.

I dnt hv such issues.. i hv restored through smart switch but thing remember i didnt got any app data after transfer
I thought this red tint probably has to do with the "42% lesser Blue light" that Samsung advertised for the S10 series Displays ... Is it not ?

If that were the case I guess I would expect it to be uniform? As I tilt the phone up and down, I can see the wave of pink tint going up and down the screen shifting between white and pink.
If it wasn't shifting colors it wouldn't bother me nearly as much

I have this as well. I suspect it is simply the nature of the screen. My 10+ is a deal warmer than my 9+ without tweaking the display settings. It isn't a uniform thing but rather almost like a wave of sorts when you shift the phone.
