Do all the newer/newish Epics/Galaxies have yellow/yellowish displays?

I just got an Epic.
Reading several threads across the Galaxy line, there is apparently a variation in screen color temperatures. From my readings, I see a pattern where perhaps the newer/replacement units have yellower screens. At the same time, those newer units also get darker in auto brightness mode than the older units.
From my own observation, the color temp gets cooler as the brightness increases.
Is it possible that Samsung tweaked the auto brightness so that the phone now gets darker in order to save the battery? So perhaps the different color temp observed are a function of how bright the screen is?
I don't care for the yellowish screen on my new Epic. I like a cooler/colder screen. Comparing the Epic next to my LCD Evo and Touch Pro 2, it is outright yellow. Comparing the 3 phones next to my Nexus One, the N1's screen looks pink. (I can post some pics tomorrow).
Bottom line, I'm trying to decide if I should try to return/exchange the phone for another and hope for the best. I read that there are some potential software solutions out of XDA, but I prefer to have a phone that is natively "cold".
Any input would be great.

Mine's pretty yellow. :-( In brighter light, it is not a problem. Darker screen is the result of a software update. Got mine on launch day.

Thanks for the information. Before the software update, when the screen didn't get as dark, did it appear less yellow at the [pre-update] low brightness?
In other words, does the screen now look more yellow than ever since the update and darker screen?

Just as yellow as always. Post-update, the screen dims more. At this point, it appears yellower. My Captivate also now dims more, post-update, and seems bluer at dimmest setting.

The only time I've had problems with my screen was when my phone had gotten damage from water. I'm on my 2nd epic and this one doesn't have any yellowish tints. Only about a week old now.

I picked up my Epic on 9/29 and don't see any yellow tint at all. I'm not an expert here but I think I would notice a tint like that. My blacks are very clear and dark also. I did notice that it seemed to run on auto brightness a little darker than it had...that was probably the D-118 update after I had it for only a few days.
I will follow this thread and see where it goes.

I don't think the screen color variation is based on release date. I have two of them since 8/30. One of them has a yellowish tint compared to the other. They both have the same DI18 update.

It seems like a coin-toss what screen color comes. I wish we have a tool that would allow easy color temperature adjustment.
I read a thread about a way using a modified kernel, but it would be nice to have an .apk that works (even if it requires root).

I got one on launch day that had more of a blue tint to it. I got another one last week that was a refurb, and it definitely is more yellow.

Weird. I just got mine today and it's very cool (read: blue) compared to my Evo... being a photo guy, this drives me nuts. I prefer warmer diplays.

I have one of the cooler screens, and I kinda like it.
My thoughts:
1) Samsung is trying to extend the life of the blue oLEDs by altering the color temperature of screens. Since this seems to be happening independently of ROM version, it's probably something they're doing with firmware.
2) (IMO More Likely) The screens on different phones came from different assembly lines or different production runs, and have a slight variance in color production. The production date of the phone wouldn't necessarily matter in this case.

I currently have it running on my ROM. It adds a new "very low" brightness setting a the bottom that's much dimmer than even the lowest one available in DI18. (Note: it doesn't interpolate levels between them, either. Meaning there is a big jump in brightness from the voodoo lowest level to the DI18 lowest level, which is the next "notch" up on the slider.) It also adds a brightness level at the very highest brightness, which noticeably makes the display warmer. (The highest and next-to-highest brightness notches are the same brightness, the difference being the highest one is warmer.) At this point of its development, it's really of no use if you want to make your screen warmer at all brightness levels.
At any rate, the project leads me to believe that, with further development, we could have an app that allows us to freely change all the color settings for the display for all brightness levels, save them to profiles, etc.
The idea of the screen getting warmer as you decrease its brightness might be a natural phenomena, or just perceptual. In my experience, colors usually seem warmer as you decrease the intensity of the light. This is even true of light on a physical object.

My screen looks awesome. No yellowing or anything. I wonder if there is a difference based on who made the screen for that particular Galaxy S phone? I remember reading an article when all the Galaxy S phones started rolling out saying that Samsung was having trouble with the manufacturing of the AMOLED screens. Perhaps they started cutting corners.
However, there also seems to be issues with auto-brightness, etc...I have that disabled on my phone and the brightness set on its lowest setting (which is plenty bright for me and all my viewing needs) which may be the difference? But, I have cranked it up from time to time just to show others and I still don't notice any yellowing.
Is there a specific test image or something where one could view that would show/exaggerate the effect people are talking about? I would be curious to see...

Here is a quick picture taken by a Touch Pro 1. Sorry about the quality. I can try to take better ones if there is interest.
From left to right - Evo, Epic, Nexus 1, Touch Pro 2. All with auto-brightness on.
In real life:
The Evo looks whiter (cooler)
The Epic looks much yellower (warmer, almost greenish)
The N1 doesn't look as pink as it appears, but looks the darkest
The Touch Pro 2 looks the whitest (coolest)
To my eyes, the Evo/Touch Pro 2 looks good. Although the picture shows the Epic looking pleasant and only slightly warmer, the white elements (clouds in wallpaper, browser backgrounds etc.) look yellow/green.
Edit: Notice the Menu, Home, Back, Search menu LEDs look whiter than the screen. See the contrast between the two makes the screen look yellower.

I've owned 3 Epics since launch day. First one had a good screen, 2nd one had a yellow tint, 3rd was perfect.
The build dates of the first 2 were 10.08 and my current one is 10.09.

By perfect, do you mean that it is not yellowish? It's interesting that the first two phones with the same build date has two different color screens...
The Epic I have has a 10.10 build date. It's yellow at dimmed levels and color temp gets cooler as it brightens up.

Hmmm!!?? purple-ish screen tint on lowest brightness on my new NS

Well I used to cause a big fit about the N1's HTC would warranty swap me because of this issue. The first N1 I purchased didnt have this problem. I just bought the NS today and right away I noticed the same exact issue. Is it safe to say that maybe this should be considered a normality rather than a defect?

Its actually the Amoled tech itself...It cant reproduce whites perfectly so they come out cool....thats why its off a bit but in return you get exact blacks
Lcd's are opposite...you get real whites but no real blacks.

It shows up in certain shades of grey, like in contacts and in clock dimmed while set on lowest brightness setting. The whites and other colors display fine.

Yeah i saw that too but thats the OS thats doing that so you should be cool

Is it either on the bottom or top? I have watched a YouTube unboxing video clip says that when you browse with your nexus s to the top of the page, or the the lowest of the page, it will actually dimmed darker. This is to let you know you have reached the lowest or highest of the page. You couldn't scroll anymore .

No, it has nothing to do with scrolling. It's exactly what I've said. Also I'm pretty positive its not a software issue. It's definitely the display. It must be either new materials Samsung is using for there displays or a calibration issue!

I also noticed this today, the purplish tint while on lowest screen brightness in a very dark room. If you bump up the brightness slightly, it goes away.

Nothin for me. No tint.

For me when I have the screen off I notice there is a purple tint to it compared to say a vibrant maybe that is the cause of you're problem

This is right on the money. Same exact issue with my N1 and now i see it with the NS. I notice this on the N1's because my very 1st purchased unit displayed perfectly without any kind of discoloration after dimming the brighness below 50%. Soon after I warranty exchanged that unit for another, I recieved one with the tint issue. After I exchanged a couple more times, I recieved another without the tint issue but the touchscreen problem was much worse than the others i've had so i sent that one in. After that, i havent received one without the tint problem yet. I bought the NS expecting not to see this problem again and lo and behold, it surfaced as soon as i dimmed below 50%.

I checked out the demo phones, and every one had it on the lowest brightness setting. I think it has something to do with the new colors in the OS. If everything was black, it would be harder to see, so they use a little purple to differentiate when on a low brightness setting. You dont have to turn the brightness up much to make it go away

The issue I'm speaking about, it doesn't literally "go away" in the manner you might be thinking. Its just that certain shades of greys are affected by it. Here's how to test for it, goto a dimmly lighted area and set the brightness thru the power widget to highest. Next, goto the dialpad on your NS, and notice the bar topright below the menu tabs, it should be grey. Now go back to your power widget and switch brightness to lowest setting. Go back to the dialpad and look at that bar again. It still should remain grey no matter how I adjust the brightness levels, but instead it'll shift to a light purplish hue.

It's because of the amoled screen uses the pentile sub pixel layout. I thought this was well known. All Samsung amoled screens do this as the all use pentile sub pixel layout, which many people hate as the feel its not as good as the true 3 sub pixel layout screens. And It's true it is not as good, but I still prefer it over non amoled screens, crap pentile and all.

Yes I know about the subixel stuff with the amoled displays, but I have to disagree with you as far as all of them display this way. As I've mentioned before, I've had 2 N1's without this issue. I'm gonna go back to BB to see if they can open a couple so that I can do some comparisons.

As I said, mine is this way too, but went to 2 BB's tonight and checked out the demo models at each store. They both had the weird purple tint as well, on those few shades of gray, like you pointed out. I also watched the Engadget video review and could see the purples on their phone too. I think all the NS's are like this, just the way the screen is. Perhaps in a software update, they could tweak the colors a bit and fix it.

this is not true. i had to go around 4 Galaxy S screens and finally i was able to find one without pinkish color in it in low brightness.
if you want to tell if you have pinkish hue. download a solid dark gray wallpaper. turn the brightness to low. if you see it pink. then you have defective screen. i repeat. its a defective screen. dont justify your self with it.
i went through 4 galaxy S and i was able to find one where white is actually white and closer the the cool blue. not a friggin pink
and its not amoled screen either. the iphone 4 is same issue. go to macrumors forum and check for your self.
i went through like 6 iphones to get one with cool blue and no yellow tint in it.
the difference is light and day now when i compare my iphone 4 to my other friends.
if you have an OCD with this " because i do. i have OCD for light leakage, same black level the whole screen, yellow/pink tint on the screen in low settings "
the whole phone to me is nothing but a big screen. if they f*** that up. then its useless

its not a software problem.
its hardware issue. when my phone with pinkish tint along with my brother one didnt have one, i thought it could be a software issue, and we even both implimented the voodoo fix : galaxy S : and still looked different.
its a hardware issue. and i really think you need to change your phone. because if you are like me, who cares alot about his phone, then once you see someone with a nexus S and you compare the whites and the gray colors on both phones. you will be one sad panda.
hell put the brightness up to the max even. you will still see the difference in white level between a pinkish/yellow tint screen and cool blue one. its not even funny :/

Yes I'm definitely OCD'd on this issue lol. I'm still not total convinced that this a defect yet. Ill be going to a few BB's today to do some comparisons. If I do find one without the tint, then cot dammit, shame on Samsung for allowing this to slip thru on these screens again! Ill report my findings later.

My NS suffers from this horribly on top of the bad touchscreen issues it also has. Def. a defective unit

Pink screen at low brightness

I'm hearing a lot of different stories regarding the screen turning heavily pink when the brightness is at its lowest.
Thought i'd make a poll to see how many people are affected, then we can hopefully gather its its a hardware defect.

No pink here, even using an app that takes it lower than stock.

I'd say it's more purple than pink but yes I have it. Same thing when I had a Galaxy S4. I'm pretty sure they're using the same AMOLED tech, which is a shame but yeah.

I have had two 6's and sent the first back because of the pink issue. 2nd phone is still pink below 1/3 brightness slider, just not as pink as the first. Called Google and talked with a hardware tech and they said it was part of the performance of the screen, and just to keep it above 1/3 brightness (wack). Both phones I had only turned pink with adaptive brightness on and the slider below 1/3 in a dark room. In normal lighting it doesn't seem to dim into the "pink" range.

Same. I use adaptive brightness. My grays have a pinkish hue at very low brightness settings. Doesn't bother me, don't usually have brightness so low.
Just part of being an early adopter, I suppose. Not that big a deal to me, but I can see how others might be upset. It's my first phone of this caliber so I'm still totally stoked with it.

My device turns pink with adaptive on in a dark room. Also without adaptive only when the screen is just about to turn off.

Mine does this of course, because it is something that happens with every AMOLED phone I can think of. It was something I forgot about of course being on a phone with a regular LCD screen for the last year, but as soon as I got my Nexus 6 I remembered about this little quirk of AMOLED. Hopefully custom kernels can minimize how much we notice it with custom color calibration.
Mine is also much more purple than pink, if it is actually a really pink color them maybe something is wrong, IDK. My purple tint doesnt start to happen till I am about 25% of the way down the brightness slider. All the way down and the screen is very heavily tinted purple. But that is too dark to see with anyway so I never turn things down low enough to make things look bad enough that I would actually care about. The screen look beautiful in any normal lighting conditions. I just think of it as a "night time feature" to be easier on tired eyes. lol.

Wasn't this talked about before release? I thought it was part of the brightness setting and to make it more of a battery saver?

On... So if I jack my brightness down, it gets a little pink. Whoopty-do... Why care? It looks fine at whatever brightness I use and I've never expected a display to look perfect when it's almost off. It's not some damning evidence that the thing is low rent.
Everyone's looking to complain. Omg, If I click on back 19 times while shaking the phone and switching back and forth into chrome, I drop a frame.... A $650 shouldn't do that!

You should, it's a great phone. But like every other phone out there, there will be some that have issues and others that are just here to stir the pot.

Heck, I thought it was a feature to make it easier to read text with the brightness super low...

Well, I guess if it's a bug I am glad I got a bad one. Sure as heck not sending it back with the PVS 13. With my luck I'd end up with a 2.

My 2014 Moto X screen turns pink when I crank the brightness down also on lollipop. I think it's due to the AMOLED screen because I can do the same to my N7 and it doesn't turn pink. I've noticed on lollipop that the screen can be made a lot dimmer than on kk

This is all due to amoled folks. And partly how it is calibrated. But it is an inherent quality in these display panels. As long as it's not pink at your "normal" viewing brightness then :thumbup:

One thing I have noticed is that with adaptive brightness on...if I turn my brightness all the way down I do see tint pinkish hue. If I turn my adaptive brightness off and turn my brightness all the way down...I don't have a pinkish tint on the screen.

Yeah mine does. Lol I am now learning that adaptive is not the same as auto-brightness. But seems like with adaptive on it keeps the screen a bit darker than without. I noticed with the slider maxed out or turned all the way down it gets much brighter and dimmer respectively with it off.

If you turn adaptive on, and manually turn the brightness all the way down (something you would likely never do in real word use) you will see it. Even in a dark room I don't see it since my display is still bright enough to stay over the threshold where this phenomenon manifests. If I go lower the brightness way down however, it appears.

What is the other phone? Go to settings -> display -> color mode and set color to normal, that will normalize it a little. It's set on vibrant by default. Regardless of that setting though, the screen on this phone is a "warm" one compared to others. The phone on the left is "cold" and bluish in comparison. Warm screens are a little more yellow/red, cold are blue. If the other phone is AMOLED there's your reason, but even if it's LCD, it's just tuned a bit differently. You should know that the phone on the left isn't producing a perfect white either, just a kind of white you're used to. Personally I prefer a warm screen, I find colder screens harder on my eyes.
TLDR- it's working as intended.

Unless you screwed with some settings no that isn't normal. If my whites were that yellow I'd return it. While an LCD might never be as white or black as an amoled it shouldn't look like 20 year old yellow paper either. WIth LCDs if you lower the brightness the screen will become more colored but nothing like that. You can also go compare it to some phones at the store that have LCD's and get an idea if its out of whack.

I spoke to two different support people at motorola ...one said it was normal for this phone as the screen was optimized for gaming?? .....the other said it was not normal and I should return it.
I tried using the app 'screen adjuster' to boost the blue light and it did indeed make it look white rather than yellow so it seems to be a color temperature setting so I'm still not sure wether changing the phone would make any difference and I can't compare in stores because they don't have them yet.
p.s. the other phone is an LG G2 which is LCD

If it bothers you you can go through the return process and see if another one is different. My phone looks pretty much the same next to my Galaxy Note n-7000. That's AMOLED, but AMOLED or not, screens can be bluish. For perspective, here's what white looks like for reference. Neither of the phones are producing white. One is bluish, one is yellowish. Do you notice it when you're not comparing phone screens? After a few minutes of looking at the screen, going from app to app or looking at pictures, do white things register as white?

I have it on auto-brightness at 50%
Do you notice it when you're not comparing phone screens? After a few minutes of looking at the screen, going from app to app or looking at pictures, do white things register as white?

I noticed it had a very warm color temp immediately I turned it on, and then got my other phones to compare ....it does bother me yes ...it's like having a TV with a yellowish screen ....I'm pretty sure it can be fixed with a software update and is not a hardware problem which is why I'm not sure if returning the phone would accomplish anything unless I see some other pures to compare

This is mine. I think ambient light may affect it. It looked more yellow when I was in a dark room. This is in a well lit area.

Mine is warmer color from 50% to 0%, Higher values and its very white. Didn't even notice it till I saw this post and well, it can't be unseen lol. I keep my display around 10-20% usually on the low side however at night in bed it doesn't look warm at all.

When you take screenshot of course it comes white lol wth
@op: is normal, that's what you get for paying this little. Low quality screens. Check androidauthority latest review of the phone, his screen is exactly like yours.

yeah, ok so it seems it is quite normal for this phone then, although from the androidcentral forum thread I posted above some screens are more yellow than others and some are actually very white, seems to depend on the batch .....i guess I'll just learn to love it :laugh:

Minimum brightness

You don't want to give your significant other yet another reason to yell at you while you're reading XDA in bed. Rate this thread to express what you think of the ASUS ROG Phone II's display minimum dimness. A higher rating indicates that the display can get extremely dim, ideal for reading in very dark environments.

I am quite concerned about some of the comments I saw on JD.com . People say the screen is yellowish, uneven coloring and grainy which gets even worse when the brightness is low. Can anyone confirm this here?

In terms of brightness I would say it's average at best. The screen is very dim my current brightness slider is set at 80% and that is just to navigate conformabley. But I would recommend a 85 to 90% settings.
The screen isn't yellowish quite the opposite actually in comparison with my 1st generation ROG, colors are even I would say and no grain.

Hopefully it's just a software issue and will be resolved shortly. Hell, it couldn't be worse than the OP6T. And the ROG2 has around 200 nits more than the 6T. That fukn thing, you can't see **** on if its bright out. Overall, I would think the extra 2,000 mah would compensate for the higher brightness til its fixed.

But even if the brightness slider is set to 100% shouldn't consume much more battery if the screen is still dim...right?
By the way, can anyone let me know how bright is it compared to Razer Phone 1?

With 6000mah you have nothing to worry about. Reduce the refresh rate to 60 and you will get time over or equal to 10 hours standby time.
Regarding the razor phone I would think it would be much brighter because it's an LCD panel. But I am not definitive.

just got my tencent version today. the screen max and min brightness is slightly higher than my oneplus 5. uneven colour/graininess requires you to squint with your face almost stuck to the screen so its really a nonissue. white balance is pretty on point and actually a little on the cool side tho whites are almost perfect white

You can also adjust color temperature and saturation in display settings. I think this screen is awesome.

Umm everything I said is praise.
I did notice that graininess and very slight yellow shifting occurs at near minimum brightness but its really not easy to spot
Other than that the experience has been pretty amazing

The screen is excellent in my opinion, and while the maximum brightness isn't the brightest out there, it's perfectly adequate even in direct sunlight.

As far as low brightness goes, I felt like the lowest brightness was still a little too bright next to my wife in bed so I installed low brightness pro. If anyone else feels they want to go lower..

Got the phone. Definitely too bright at lowest so either use an app to add dark overlay to dim or wait for a software update I guess

Yes it does have a red tint on dark grey colors. Visible everywhere in apps using dark theme based on grey like google apps dark mode, the rog ui itself and any dark grey on screen.
Effect is more pronounced while using 120hz. And less on other modes.

Same here, got the tencent version. Lets hope its just a software issue that future update can fix it. Im coming from s9 plus so its hard to compare the beauty of the screen.

Minimum brightness is way too high. Reference compared to nexus 5x and galaxy s7 on lowest setting. It's blinding

Rog 2 is brighter than the sun
I have a great appreciate of the capabilities of this phone, no matter what you might hear this phone has superb color rendering and there is no beating the refresh rate. When it comes to comparing how it delivers in color saturation compared to its competition all you are doing is splitting hairs... But as for its minimum brightness, well you cannot appreciate how truly bright the panel is until you are trying to write a blog post when the lights are off and your partner is asleep next to you.
With the slider all the way down its impossible to look at the screen without squinting real hard because those whites burn through your retinas and imprint on your soul. Do you like watching Netflix on your phone in bed? Not on this phone you won't. Want to read that last Facebook alert you just got after you turned the lights out? Absolutely you can do it... If you like staring at the sun that is. I sincerely hope Asus can do some sort of work around and deliver less power to the display in total darkness because light induced migrains are not fun.
Otherwise pretty good phone.
