Minimum brightness - ASUS ROG Phone II Real Life Review

You don't want to give your significant other yet another reason to yell at you while you're reading XDA in bed. Rate this thread to express what you think of the ASUS ROG Phone II's display minimum dimness. A higher rating indicates that the display can get extremely dim, ideal for reading in very dark environments.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

I am quite concerned about some of the comments I saw on JD.com . People say the screen is yellowish, uneven coloring and grainy which gets even worse when the brightness is low. Can anyone confirm this here?

My friend says screen is great

At low brightness? No strange effects on gray color?

In terms of brightness I would say it's average at best. The screen is very dim my current brightness slider is set at 80% and that is just to navigate conformabley. But I would recommend a 85 to 90% settings.
The screen isn't yellowish quite the opposite actually in comparison with my 1st generation ROG, colors are even I would say and no grain.

Hopefully it's just a software issue and will be resolved shortly. Hell, it couldn't be worse than the OP6T. And the ROG2 has around 200 nits more than the 6T. That fukn thing, you can't see **** on if its bright out. Overall, I would think the extra 2,000 mah would compensate for the higher brightness til its fixed.

But even if the brightness slider is set to 100% shouldn't consume much more battery if the screen is still dim...right?
By the way, can anyone let me know how bright is it compared to Razer Phone 1?

With 6000mah you have nothing to worry about. Reduce the refresh rate to 60 and you will get time over or equal to 10 hours standby time.
Regarding the razor phone I would think it would be much brighter because it's an LCD panel. But I am not definitive.

just got my tencent version today. the screen max and min brightness is slightly higher than my oneplus 5. uneven colour/graininess requires you to squint with your face almost stuck to the screen so its really a nonissue. white balance is pretty on point and actually a little on the cool side tho whites are almost perfect white

I did notice that graininess and very slight yellow shifting occurs at near minimum brightness but its really not easy to spot
Other than that the experience has been pretty amazing

The screen is excellent in my opinion, and while the maximum brightness isn't the brightest out there, it's perfectly adequate even in direct sunlight.

As far as low brightness goes, I felt like the lowest brightness was still a little too bright next to my wife in bed so I installed low brightness pro. If anyone else feels they want to go lower..

Got the phone. Definitely too bright at lowest so either use an app to add dark overlay to dim or wait for a software update I guess

Yes it does have a red tint on dark grey colors. Visible everywhere in apps using dark theme based on grey like google apps dark mode, the rog ui itself and any dark grey on screen.
Effect is more pronounced while using 120hz. And less on other modes.

Same here, got the tencent version. Lets hope its just a software issue that future update can fix it. Im coming from s9 plus so its hard to compare the beauty of the screen.

Minimum brightness is way too high. Reference compared to nexus 5x and galaxy s7 on lowest setting. It's blinding

Rog 2 is brighter than the sun
I have a great appreciate of the capabilities of this phone, no matter what you might hear this phone has superb color rendering and there is no beating the refresh rate. When it comes to comparing how it delivers in color saturation compared to its competition all you are doing is splitting hairs... But as for its minimum brightness, well you cannot appreciate how truly bright the panel is until you are trying to write a blog post when the lights are off and your partner is asleep next to you.
With the slider all the way down its impossible to look at the screen without squinting real hard because those whites burn through your retinas and imprint on your soul. Do you like watching Netflix on your phone in bed? Not on this phone you won't. Want to read that last Facebook alert you just got after you turned the lights out? Absolutely you can do it... If you like staring at the sun that is. I sincerely hope Asus can do some sort of work around and deliver less power to the display in total darkness because light induced migrains are not fun.
Otherwise pretty good phone.

Pink screen at low brightness

I'm hearing a lot of different stories regarding the screen turning heavily pink when the brightness is at its lowest.
Thought i'd make a poll to see how many people are affected, then we can hopefully gather its its a hardware defect.
No pink here, even using an app that takes it lower than stock.
Sent from my Nexus 6
I'd say it's more purple than pink but yes I have it. Same thing when I had a Galaxy S4. I'm pretty sure they're using the same AMOLED tech, which is a shame but yeah.

I have had two 6's and sent the first back because of the pink issue. 2nd phone is still pink below 1/3 brightness slider, just not as pink as the first. Called Google and talked with a hardware tech and they said it was part of the performance of the screen, and just to keep it above 1/3 brightness (wack). Both phones I had only turned pink with adaptive brightness on and the slider below 1/3 in a dark room. In normal lighting it doesn't seem to dim into the "pink" range.

Same. I use adaptive brightness. My grays have a pinkish hue at very low brightness settings. Doesn't bother me, don't usually have brightness so low.
Just part of being an early adopter, I suppose. Not that big a deal to me, but I can see how others might be upset. It's my first phone of this caliber so I'm still totally stoked with it.
pink
My device turns pink with adaptive on in a dark room. Also without adaptive only when the screen is just about to turn off.
Mine does this of course, because it is something that happens with every AMOLED phone I can think of. It was something I forgot about of course being on a phone with a regular LCD screen for the last year, but as soon as I got my Nexus 6 I remembered about this little quirk of AMOLED. Hopefully custom kernels can minimize how much we notice it with custom color calibration.
Mine is also much more purple than pink, if it is actually a really pink color them maybe something is wrong, IDK. My purple tint doesnt start to happen till I am about 25% of the way down the brightness slider. All the way down and the screen is very heavily tinted purple. But that is too dark to see with anyway so I never turn things down low enough to make things look bad enough that I would actually care about. The screen look beautiful in any normal lighting conditions. I just think of it as a "night time feature" to be easier on tired eyes. lol.
Wasn't this talked about before release? I thought it was part of the brightness setting and to make it more of a battery saver?
N6
On... So if I jack my brightness down, it gets a little pink. Whoopty-do... Why care? It looks fine at whatever brightness I use and I've never expected a display to look perfect when it's almost off. It's not some damning evidence that the thing is low rent.
Everyone's looking to complain. Omg, If I click on back 19 times while shaking the phone and switching back and forth into chrome, I drop a frame.... A $650 shouldn't do that!
Smh
Oh I'm not looking to complain at all, I just wanted to see if it's something everyone had or not.
I've just heard so much Conflicting info on this it's driving g me nuts... Either way, I'm super excited about getting it ?

You should, it's a great phone. But like every other phone out there, there will be some that have issues and others that are just here to stir the pot.
Heck, I thought it was a feature to make it easier to read text with the brightness super low...
*shrug*
Well, I guess if it's a bug I am glad I got a bad one. Sure as heck not sending it back with the PVS 13. With my luck I'd end up with a 2.
My 2014 Moto X screen turns pink when I crank the brightness down also on lollipop. I think it's due to the AMOLED screen because I can do the same to my N7 and it doesn't turn pink. I've noticed on lollipop that the screen can be made a lot dimmer than on kk
This is all due to amoled folks. And partly how it is calibrated. But it is an inherent quality in these display panels. As long as it's not pink at your "normal" viewing brightness then
Sorry my screen is pretty:good:
One thing I have noticed is that with adaptive brightness on...if I turn my brightness all the way down I do see tint pinkish hue. If I turn my adaptive brightness off and turn my brightness all the way down...I don't have a pinkish tint on the screen.
Anyone else's screen reacts this way?

Yeah mine does. Lol I am now learning that adaptive is not the same as auto-brightness. But seems like with adaptive on it keeps the screen a bit darker than without. I noticed with the slider maxed out or turned all the way down it gets much brighter and dimmer respectively with it off.

If you turn adaptive on, and manually turn the brightness all the way down (something you would likely never do in real word use) you will see it. Even in a dark room I don't see it since my display is still bright enough to stay over the threshold where this phenomenon manifests. If I go lower the brightness way down however, it appears.

[MotoX] [2014] Purple Display at Low Brightness [Lollipop] [Amoled]

Okay so I bought a new Moto X (2014) last week In India. Everything about the phone is great. It was already on lollipop. But when I decrease the brightness to below 30-40% the display gradually becomes more and more purple. And with Adaptive Brightness on and in a dark room, it's so purple that the green and yellow shades appear grey or black. I know amoled panels have this problem at very low brightness and apparently many Nexys 6 users are also facing it. However I didn't see many complaints here in the Moto X forum.
So if you have this problem please vote in the poll above. Then I can ask them for a replacement. Thank you.
I'd later add some photos of the screen.
P.S. If you are experiencing this, please add some photos so that people can compare it with their displays.
ok i have this problem too, but when I'm in the bed and reading random news this purple display isn't disturbing me. i can feel it relax more my eyes. so i can say i take advantage from a bug
I don't think this is a bug, way easier on the eyes in the dark, perhaps some kind of a feature on AMOLED and Lollipop. The Nexus 6 has it, too, i think.
I don't know if anyone else noticed that in direct sun light, the screen goes extra bright - like indoor bright + boost?
This is not a feature. It's an issue with amoled displays. That's why Samsung limits the lowest brightness to a higher level. While Moto X seems to go way down. I just want to know if everyone's having this. Then it's okay. But if it's not everyone then there're some good amoled panels out there and we are getting the bad ones.
Yup, keep noticing this before the screen goes completely off.
It's not a "bug" with AMOLED displays, it's inherent to the way the displays work. Red LEDs use much less power than other colors so when the brightness is down low the displays looks like it has a slightly red tint to it. While Samsung does keep their best displays for themselves the lack of a red tint is not due to that but is instead due to not letting the brightness go as low on their displays.

That's what I meant. Not quite the best choice of word, I guess. But if that was the case, everyone should have had the pink tint at low brightness. Do you mean the ones who are not getting it are either lying or have Moto X's with LCD panels?

Well, only 2 out of 11 people have reported no color distortion. And remember that while you're asking "Is there a purple tint?" they're answering the question "Have you noticed a purple tint?"
What I've noticed is that when Adaptive Brightness is on, the display gets super dark and causes the purple tint. When I turn Adaptive Brightness off in a dark room, it actually completely loses the purple tint, and compared to my Galaxy Tab S 8.4 at lowest brightness, the screen is brighter than the Tab S. So I guess Motorola hasn't caught up with Samsung's display technology since my Tab S can actually get dimmer without such a dramatic color distortion - for my Moto X to get to a brightness level that dim, I need to turn on Adaptive Brightness (thus with the purple tint).
.
I wouldn't say it gets a Purple tint but rather a reddish one with adaptive light.
And I LOVE it. This way I don't have to install Lumen.CF or any other stuff. Way easier on the eyes at night and it gets reeeeeeaally dark. Just perfect!
I also love that it naturally has a lower white temperature point than other lcd/phones screens. Warmer white is cozy white.
7 votes for without purple/red tint.
People who are not seeing the tint, can you please upload a side by side photo of "your phone at lowest brightness with the adjustment bar visible" and "a white paper".

I voted for no color distortion as my display is very very good. I can tell you there is certainly a variation in displays. A few months back someone posted about being able to see color banding and such. Those of us with really good displays do not see that. I was going to order a Pure edition to replace my unlocked XT1097 but the display is so good on it I decided not to, I doubt another one will be as good. I had 5 different Moto X 2013 models and the displays varied on each of them as well. I kept the best one and my 2014 model is still quite a bit better then the best 2013 I had.

The rest of the phone in my case feels pretty solid and well built. Also I'm getting 47k+ scores on Antutu. Hence I am having second thoughts about getting it replaced.
My PE doesn't turn purple and has better whites than my AT&T branded one. The screen on that one is awful to me but I also use a G2, iPhone 6, '13 N7, no one notices but me.

Indeed, when adaptative brightness is turned off, purple tint will not occur. However, I am not sure this is a "feature". It actually looks more like a poor implementation of auto brightness.

Contrast (true blacks)

How well do you know your fifty shades of grey? Rate this thread to express how good the Xiaomi Mi 8's display contrast is. A higher rating indicates that black is true black, rather than a very dark gray.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Is it just my phone or are the blacks not as dark/deep as what an AMOLED screen should be? If i turn on the "hide notch" option the area is still much lighter than the notch itself. I can clearly still see where the notch is. The blacks are dark but not samsung AMOLED dark (pitch black).
Pixels are off, as black as it can be. You can see "something" because you have a physical notch. You don't see pixels light up, because they are off.
Hello everyone.
I'm very interested in this device and I want to buy it very soon, so I have a simple question I hope it will be answered.
The most interesting thing -to me- about phone is the screen. I want a phone with Super AMOLED screen and they say that the screen of this phone is the same, but the "lab tests of GSMArena" show that the black color has a value of (0.002 cd/m²) when the brightness of the screen is in "max auto".
It's known that Super AMOLEDs turn off the pixels that are responsible for displaying the black color, and these pixels are supposed to remain off regardless of the brightness level of the screen. So,if the screen is Super AMOLED, how did this value appear?!!
I know it is a very small and undetectable value, but it indicates that the pixels are not turned off -Am I wrong ??-.
Is it conceivable that the screen is not Super AMOLED,or did I miss something?
Knowing that all Samsung phones with AMOLED screens, even the cheapest ones, have the value (0.000 cd/m²) for the black color.
I am very sorry to prolong my question and I hope that someone will answer me.
Thanks in advance.

The amoled on Mi 8 is made by samsung so.... Frankly speaking these tests are probably not very accurate, imagine this, 0.002, literally just a tiny bit of sunlight and any tests they conduct will show a value other than 0.000. I am pretty sure the equipment they use to test (GSMarena) is not used under a controlled situation. I would take these tests at face value because most equipments have an error of 0.005+-

I am not saying that the tests are faulty, it is just that the accuracy when you are talking about it at the scale of 0.0002, is not something that u can obtain accurately with the testing methodology by gsmarena, it must be conducted in lab environment where it is controlled to conclusively claim the value at that level of precision

just go in a complete dark room and look at the display. Best is to look at a complete dark photo or jpg file. That's the best test.

Screen works fine, dont read the GSMArena
I've this phone and its ok. Black is off, its OLED...
With dim screen in a dark environment I can see a pretty bad black smear effect, however I guess it is a common oled problem plus it's not really visible with some brightness
Problem with old amoled screen was the delay between pixel off and pixel on. So to avoid this delay, a solution can be to let the pixel on but with very low intensity instead of switching it off. Maybe that's why pixels on mi8 aren't swich off..

Well not really, I mean I guess it is common but I did not have this problem on my S3 and on my mother's s8 plus, although I've seen it on her S4.
While contrast en true blacks are good, it does seem to smear a lot more on low brightness scrolling than other phones with OLED I've seen/had.

Minimum brightness

Colors distort a bit on the minimum brightness setting
Minimum brightness is fantastic, especially since you can set night mode to make the screen even darker. The darkest setting is TOO dark for me, even in bed! No complaints from the SO
Got mine this week. I noticed some random, white flickering while on the lowest brightness (with night mode on, lowered "lightness" and warmest color temperature).
Will troubleshoot in the morning and report back if it persists.
This aside, min brightness is great. If using a dark mode app (like Reddit or XDA Labs), the whole screen feels less bright than the light from my AC. There is a bit of noticeable... something, while scrolling. When scrolling with an AMOLED black background on low brightness, the text/image looks thinner, kind of as if it took a few miliseconds for the pixel to turn on. Feels kind of like a ghost, or as if you squeezed the image. This is very subtle, but noticeable if you look for it.
Overall, the screen is amazing to look at in the middle of the night comfortably. Just be careful not to blind yourself with the fingerprint light.

Yeah. The 7T has a sort of 'built in' blue light reductioner. Fiddling with the settings should quickly clear it up

Can you guide me where I can turn it off? Or it is something built in hardware?

Yeah ofc.
Go to Settings/Display/Screen Calibration;
Then pick 'Advanced' and choose one of the three. I chose 'Amoled Wide Gamut'
To remove the 'yellowish', go fiddle with the "Cold/Warm" bar. The colder you chose the less yellowish

Yes currently on that setting, still i feel the color accuracy iss off, a little more saturation and terrible gamma
The new update has even woresend the color accuracy in amoled mode, anyone else facing the same?
Are any of you guys facing the green-red tint issue on your screens? It happens below 50% brightness. It can be seen through this thread on oneplus forum - https://forums.oneplus.com/threads/oneplus-7t-display-tint-issue-uneven-oled-not-uniform.1122487/

Do you have DC dimming on?
For those of you that have noticed the green tint, what is the best way to detect this? I have seen some posts in other forms, essentially I have had the phone for a day and I haven't seen any issues with the screen on dark mode or dim settings, just wanted to know what to look for in case of issues in 15 day return window

Open an incognito chrome tab and move to a dark room, the brightness slider has to be around 1/3 or less.
Color is perfect. I am not going out of my way to try to find problems.
I don't have any tint issues, but the colors seem a bit washed for an amoled. I prefer the screen on my OP5 better.
The green tint is a thing it all over forums of the oneplus community it seems like a panel defect and it is visible with night mode on grey or dark backgrounds you will notice it when you pull the notification shades down or just staring at the grey background its a greenish tint top and bottom part for me and in the center it kind of redish some other people have it just in the bottom some all over , i didnt notice it initially until later after two weeks of having the device dc dimming doesnt really work it helps a bit. oneplus representatives know about the issue and have said its normal which is not, its bad calibration of b grade panels from samsung a guess thats causing this mura effect or just plain defective panels it is a shame since this is my first oneplus device i read so much about it and was debating between the p30 pro and this one since i had a mate 10pro which never gave me any issues but well it is what it is and now ill just have to get use to it. bitter sweet opt7t
I wonder if this 'tint' issue is isolated to specific model / models? I have 2 HD1900 and whilst this is one time I am happy to be colour blind (not B&W type but cannot tell certain colours apart...) my other half is spot on on colours and has not noticed any of this...
I knew there was going to be certain advantages being colour blind
