The M8 is mad bright. Just wait till you try and read a book in bed. Even with brightness off, screen too bright!
When I saw the Z2 I thought the screen was perfectly bright, I didn't realize how much brighter the M8 and the 5S are
Maybe the Z2 is on auto?

Just my two cents, but as an experienced user of both amoled and IPS handsets......it's not necessarily a great thing to whack up the brightness on an ips display.
Although IPS displays have whiter whites and better daylight visibility, it's no secret that blacks (at least compared to amoled which boast infinite contrast) appear grey on any ips phones - be it htc one, iPhone, xperia, lg etc etc.
I have an amateur interest in astronomy and a lot of the space photos on my iPhone almost make me cringe when the brightness is whacked up as it becomes dark grey rather than black.
I haven't received my z2 yet, but the lack of intense brightness as far as I'm concerned is in NO WAY a bad thing...

Can you show us proofs of your screen being too dim? Picture it. I am curious to see how it looks like.

I'd just like to add though, for the comparison to be fair, please make sure each device has the same wallpaper, the colour contrasts could be adding to the effect of the Z2 looking dimmer (but that aspect is subjective).

and how often do you use your phone at this angle?
I find that 180 degrees is useless but 360 degrees is perfect!
The purpose of this thread is to stop bashing people ! Sure i never use it at these angles!

Hopefully I wasn't bashing, just some humour :silly:
New Z1 user here, moving from a Galaxy S3!
Honestly viewing angles hardly bother me. The screen is beautiful and on of the most natural and sharp screens out there viewed straight on, which is how I view my screen 90% of the time. The other 10% of the time I'm on my bed an it's at an angle or on the table. Yes I can't look at any pictures that well but text is still fine, which is what I need, so for me viewing angles isn't a dealbreaker.
Compared to the S3 the viewing angles are pretty poor but oh well, I'll take the LCD's awesome outdoor brightness over the AMOLED's viewing angle any day.
I would say that is a very good display quality, indeed! It seems that your screen doesn't suffer from the so called "yellow hue", does it? Could you please make some additional photos which capture the screen straight on? So far I have stumbled upon 2 devices with yellowish displays, so I returned them both. However, I would like to see "the benchmark", e.g. what screen I should be looking for. Thanks in advance!

You people have to stop it. It's about QUALITY. A good quality display has good viewing angles. Bad viewing angles ruins the impression that the device is a flagship. I don't spend $1000 on a device that looks like $50. People that accept these things are people that have already bought the product, and are too ashamed to admit that they spent a lot of money on a device with a mid-range display, so they think "you know, it ain't all that bad". Snap out of it. Do you know what people like that are called? Fanboys.

Agreed, yet another thread created to discuss the same crap about the display bla bla bla. Don't like it sell it and move on and stop whining about it.
And most of all post this info into a thread that already is discussing this topic rather than create your own.
I cant see anything wrong with the thread.. . It shows that the phone got already a good display. So if u find the thread a totall crap so dont comment or report to mod. Dont act smart and post this kind of comments. And seriously talking honest or share opinions isnt a silly tging to call fanboys. You dont know others so dont judge.

No.there is White balance app but Screen is caliberated by Sony themselves.their developer blog is claiming they are using a very hardly tweaked algoritim used in advanced displays to achieve wide color gamut. which tests proved them right:good:
It's a huge improvement over the old variants of TFT, colors are not degrading with angles. However there's considerable amount of brightness loss, more so than on your regular IPS / AMOLED viewing angles.

[FYI] Dim Screen! Moto has a "White Glove" customer satisfaction dept! Maxx'ed now
Update: they sent me a refurbished Maxx, what an improvement over the X!
Got to it by being persistent is all I can say.
After Vzw sent 2 refurbished phones, they agreed to a conference call to see what moto could about my dim screen, the worst hardware issue with the X, IMHO.
They agreed to send a new x via their "advanced exchange program" which is similar to vzw's but with an option for new with the return after you get the replacement.
But white X's (nonDE) were out of stock. So after many calls I got connected to the white glove dept.
They offered a white DE to me along with a skip!!!
My original X is a 3 month old one I got on Vzw's Edge plan.
All dev editions are the same. Black front, white back.
But congratz on getting the DE....more space, keep the warranty and unlock the bootloader. Easy street!
I'd hold on to it.... Dim screen or not. Lol

I never say this, but in your particular case....I'd send it back, tell them you're very disappointed and move on to a different phone. Isn't this your 3rd?
It looks like my 3 year old S2 screen. I could never live with that color.
My Z2 has a very visible digitizer pattern on screen not only when seen under the sun but also indoors with direct sources of light. Among a few other faults this was one of the things I would have expected Z3 to fix but this is not the case. While surfing Z3 pictures found a pattern similar to the Z2's.
EDIT: Also wanted to add that my HTC M8 has no such problem there seems to be no digitizer patterns on the screen under any source of light.

For my Z2 this happens to be a problem, when text is being overlapped by these patterns it creates a sort of aliasing effect granted this only happens with white background and black text but still.
I used many phones, and belive me. I have high demand and standards. And dosent bother me at all.
I saw that on my Xperia arc, arc s, Xperia S, Xperia z and now on z1.
No single aliasing made by that digitizer.
You have defected phone, or you have really sensitive eyes.
Trust me the only way the OP sees this is by flashing a flashlight right on it.. i've head a lot of people talk about this but no one's actually affected by it
Yes.. you can see only with direct flashlight on it, or direct sunlight but you must go with that in mind to see it.
Regular use will not see that.
it's no difference than AMOLED pentile displays like the ones found on many of the samsung galaxy phones. almost any display you will always see things if you shine bright light on it while the display is off. of course this is not really a problem because people don't tend to stare at their phones while the screen is off.
While I agree it's not that big of a deal, I was surprised to see it. First phone in a long time that had it this noticeable.

The reason why the digitizer could be seen is because of the no-gap display that they have made between the screen and the digitizer, allowing higher sensitivity on the screen itself (which is helpful for some people), and also reducing reflection/refraction from light source.

If thats they case they are doing a terrible job, the screen is very reflective.
It is supposed to reduce reflection during usage of the phone when it is turned on. Most glass panels are reflective when there's no surface lighting on it.
Not sure of they are doing a good job with that
Sent from my D6503 using Tapatalk
I've just heard the digitizer is quite prominent on the Z3. A Google search has lead me here.
Strangley, in the past I had a noticeable digitizer in sunlight on a replacement Nexus 4. It's the only phone that has had it, so it was obviously a mistake in the manufacturing somehow as I've replaced screens and had replacement Nexus 4's and 5's. It did annoy me. Yes, most of the time you wouldn't see it, but in the summer, you'll often see it and detracts from what you're looking at on the screen. Looking at a screen in sunlight is already pretty crap in that you can't see it very well. But then to have an electronic grid staring back at you is even more annoying.
This has unfortunately put me off a Z3 and it's another excuse for me to upgrade my N5 to an N6.
I also noticed this on my Nexus 5, and now I see it on the Z3 as well. It doesn't bother me when the screen is on though. Pixels look smooth for me. Perhaps you have your screen less than 50% brightness?
Really not an issue unless you plan on shining a torch on your phone screen...seriously do we worry about something which is small?
Sent from my D6603 using XDA Free mobile app
I did not notice it, I guess you have to be actively looking for it.
Its not a big deal at all. Screen functions very well inspite of it
Adding my voice to the "It's not an issue" crowd. Seriously, the M8 also had the digitiser panel you could see if you looked under the right light.
Has anyone used their screen in full sunlight?
a few of us on the Australian Model (910G) has found that in full sunlight in any of the 4 modes the auto brightness seems to adjust the screen WAY up so that colours are washed out and the screen looks psychedelic.
Its utterly revolting.
is there any way to disable this OTHER than disabling auto brightness?
or is this a firmware bug?
Hey mate I have been in full sunlight a number of times and not noticed this at all. I would notice it as I am quite picky.

I can force it by a small LED torch as well (after about 30-40 seconds of steady bright light) It's not just me though At least two others I know have it as well...
I have something of the same... In the sunlight i can use it fine but when i put a shadow over it... it looks a bit weird in contrast with the part of the screen in the sunlight. I thought it would be something to do to make the screen better in the sun!

Under direct sunlight I can barely notice this, I have just tested at my work as the sun shines in through a window next to me. If I hold it under direct sunlight it does boost the saturation, but while it's under sunlight I can barely tell this has happened. When I take it away you can tell that it has boosted the saturation but it's not Psychedelic to me at all. So I believe my phone doesn't have this issue.

Its especially noticeable in games.. I'm a bit addicted to both Marvel Puzzle Quest and Ingress.. and you really *really* notice it in the former, the latter not as badly but its definitely there.
It is supposed to do this when Auto Brightness is enabled. The picture should answer some of your questions and better understand what exactly is taking place.

hmm interesting, it doesn't really explain why it jacks it to such a point that the screen looks ridiculous... but thanks.
If this is indeed deliberate, I'm not sure how I feel about it.
I mean its great that it makes it readable in the intense light we get during the day, but at cost of image quality? I'm not sure.

Yeah the colors can look a bit odd but having the benefit of reading the net and so forth in direct sunlight is an okay trade off I assume

910U model had this until the latest update, I would say the next update will correct the 'crayon style" look that occurs in direct sunlight, it did for the U so should for you lol.
EDIT: oh and the brightness is still great just doesnt have the cartoon colours.

May be irrelevant but someone mentioned this to me last week and I suggested to change the "screen mode". It's default is adaptive and for some, is terrible at ruining colours in any light... I believe he changed it to "Basic" or try any other the other three choices and said it worked (for the most part).. Was less crazy anyways, I believe he said.. Worth a shot

As I mentioned earlier, I've tried it in all 4 modes.. it does it in all.
I'm looking forward to the firmware update too, but being on Telstra I'm not holding my breath... those guys are hopeless at getting updates out..
So sorry didn't notice u mentioned that... My bad

same here Australia n910G. Howeve my guess is that it's a mode for better readability under direct sunlight
I don't notice this since the last update (ANJ5). Screen gets brighter in sunlight using auto at max brightness, but not bleached out.
Thanks for bringing this up because I thought I had a defective device
