I find that 180 degrees is useless but 360 degrees is perfect!

New Z1 user here, moving from a Galaxy S3!
Honestly viewing angles hardly bother me. The screen is beautiful and on of the most natural and sharp screens out there viewed straight on, which is how I view my screen 90% of the time. The other 10% of the time I'm on my bed an it's at an angle or on the table. Yes I can't look at any pictures that well but text is still fine, which is what I need, so for me viewing angles isn't a dealbreaker.
Compared to the S3 the viewing angles are pretty poor but oh well, I'll take the LCD's awesome outdoor brightness over the AMOLED's viewing angle any day.
I would say that is a very good display quality, indeed! It seems that your screen doesn't suffer from the so called "yellow hue", does it? Could you please make some additional photos which capture the screen straight on? So far I have stumbled upon 2 devices with yellowish displays, so I returned them both. However, I would like to see "the benchmark", e.g. what screen I should be looking for. Thanks in advance!

You people have to stop it. It's about QUALITY. A good quality display has good viewing angles. Bad viewing angles ruins the impression that the device is a flagship. I don't spend $1000 on a device that looks like $50. People that accept these things are people that have already bought the product, and are too ashamed to admit that they spent a lot of money on a device with a mid-range display, so they think "you know, it ain't all that bad". Snap out of it. Do you know what people like that are called? Fanboys.

Agreed, yet another thread created to discuss the same crap about the display bla bla bla. Don't like it sell it and move on and stop whining about it.
And most of all post this info into a thread that already is discussing this topic rather than create your own.
I cant see anything wrong with the thread.. . It shows that the phone got already a good display. So if u find the thread a totall crap so dont comment or report to mod. Dont act smart and post this kind of comments. And seriously talking honest or share opinions isnt a silly tging to call fanboys. You dont know others so dont judge.

I have an HTC Inspire. I love the size of the screen and under normal circumstances am never unhappy with the picture quality. Until I use my buddys iPhone 4. No matter how much time has passed, everytime I pick up the IPhone it makes me feel bad about the quality of my screen.
Well the reason I am posting this here is because I have been patiently waiting for the sgs2 to come out here in America so that I can finally have a device with all the specs that I want. Most importantly the screen. I have never actually seen a Super Amoled Plus screen so I was hoping to get some insight.
I know the iPhone actually has a higher resolution, but the sub pixel density on the new Amoled Plus screens is higher. I just like the overal pop of the amoled screens in general and think it looks better than traditional displays. Can anyone who owns both devices give an honest opinion of which they think looks better quality wise.
It would be great to grab my buddys phone someday and say "meh, looks ok".

I just came from an iphone 4, and while the screen was my favorite thing about the iphone, i have had absolutely no regrets after switching the sgs2. Actually, i think the retina display is crap compared to the amoled. The colors are so much crisper and holding the screen a foot away from eyes will get you pretty close to the retina display effect.

I don't have an iPhone 4 myself, but here in Singapore enough people own them (90% of the population uses an iPhone 4 according to surveys), so I have plenty of contact with them. For me, the SAMOLED+ just slightly edges out the iPhone's retina display. The colours are fantastic, but I do love the pixel density on the retina too.
That said, as far as memory serves the retina display is not slouch at colours too. You want bad? Try the iPhone 3GS. The colours were GODAWFUL on that one.
I just hope that we will get SAMOLED+ Retina on a future Samsung device. And that might not be that far away, if the rumors of a 4.5 inch 720p SAMOLED+ is true.
I came from the iPhone 4. I will say that the retina display is insane. Looking at HQ photos and video you cannot see one single pixel. SGS II comes close but you can spot pixels if you look close enough. It is very crisp and clear though and the brightness and color density more than makes up for it

Well .. Any loser that bases there purchasing decision on how sharp a screen is deserves an iphone.. Go ahead.. Suck on them big apple titties...
This is very obvious the first few hours using the phone. Horrible sharpening halos around texts most noticeable on gray and non white backgrounds. It kills the black contrast of the text as well making it look gray and not to mention a pain to read. You can spot it easily in browser forums here: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2250376 and here: http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/hardware-clinic-2/

Am I the only one bothered by this?
I used to feel that aswell on my Acer GD245HQ when i was like 2 cm from it, then i got glasses and standed at a normal distance and they disapear
Supercurio is busy working his magic for the display a few of his tweets:
"with tuned sharpening, perceived sharpness can be nicely improved, sans visible artefacts"
"image processor from GS3 is from a newer generation than any existing devices, adding finer controls over useful parameters"
"settings are clearly over-cooked (not the first time and no preset is reasonable /accurate) it's perfect for Display Expert"
He's also addressing black crush etc...

i agree. unless it is norm to put your phone very near your eyes, use a magnifying lens or microscope when using your phone daily.
I just viewed the linked pages on my gs3 and I'm having a very hard time seeing what you're talking about. How does the text look remotely grey? And what halos? Text is sharp and easy to read even when zoomed out a fair bit. As you'd expect since it's a 300+ ppi screen.
Are you talking about the anti-aliasing? You don't want the font to be anti-aliased or something? Even in your magnified photo, I can't see what the problem is?

It isn't the anti alisaing. I increased the contrast a little to show the problem more clearly.
Notice the halos around the characters? Still dont know what is wrong? In browser tap menu, brightness and colors, select level 1 power saving. This makes the display color a little bluish but also eliminates the sharpening and makes the text much better looking as it should. Compare it to default and see if you notice a difference.

I think this is a legitimate issue. I can see the poor text rendering in all lighting conditions unlike complains about imperfect blacks that can only be seem in pitch dark conditions. Joking aside the poor whites are also an issue.

To me that looks like the Xperia ION has it's brightness and color saturation cranked all the way up. While some people think this looks better, it hasn't have to be better though. In my opinion, the Xperia Z lacks a bit of color calibration, but IMHO this could be resolved with a simple calibration app.
I really love Sony, but Sony can only improve if I show them my love.

It does look like a gamma calibration issue.
does android let you set the gamma settings via command line like on Linux?
eg. xgamma -gamma 1.000
Using linux as an example, it looks like the Z is set to 1.200 gamma, where .900 would suit most people's needs better.
Check it.
lowered gamma to .75

A matter of preference.. I reckon the Z has more natural colours. The Ion has everything too high for my taste.. Ever seen Samsung TV's on factory settings? Same thing. Colours boosted beyond natural. But again, some prefer it that way.. I like the Z's colour better om these pics, though the ion pops more out so to speak.

This is not some pointless thread shooting Sony. Admittance is the first step to recovery. If there's a gamma tuning problem, Sony ought to know and fix the problem. And if it's a quality problem, Sony must know it can't repeat the mistake again. Most of us here love Sony. We want Sony have its fullest potential to destroy Samsung and Apple. If everybody keeps sweeping this issue under the carpet, this screen issue is going to come back in future Sony phones.

All my complaints over the Z are not just *****ing about the screen and the camera. I believe they are two issues which can be sorted out by software and Sony should admit it and fix it. The screen will always have poor viewing angles, but please sort out the gamma/colours.

I've just loaded both wallpapers on to the lockscreen on my UK sim-free Z and it really does look nothing like yours. The colours are more vivid on my device although not as saturated as on your Ion, which has it's contrast too high IMO - the colours are more realistic on my Z (eg. the colour of the sky looks like sky whereas it's too much on your Ion).
I have to turn my Z to an extreme angle to make it look like yours.
It is good to see others are recognizing this screen is barely adequate.
I was starting to get tired of being called a troll for simply making accurate and factual statements.
i recieved my xperia z yesterday and to be honest was very fearful with reading all these reviews but i really have no issue with my phone the screen is nothing short of great friend of mine who uses iphone 5 even made comment on the clarity of the screen.
I understand why people are making comments on viewing angles but to be honest i cant understand how anyone with half a brain would use their phone on an angle lol i mean come on guys whats going on. watching movies on screen so small i really dont know why anyone would do that i cant even watch a movie on those old 68cm screen tvs anything under 42 inches and your just wasting your viewing pleasure, the screen is amazing so all of you who are holding back your missing out

Just my two cents, but as an experienced user of both amoled and IPS handsets......it's not necessarily a great thing to whack up the brightness on an ips display.
Although IPS displays have whiter whites and better daylight visibility, it's no secret that blacks (at least compared to amoled which boast infinite contrast) appear grey on any ips phones - be it htc one, iPhone, xperia, lg etc etc.
I have an amateur interest in astronomy and a lot of the space photos on my iPhone almost make me cringe when the brightness is whacked up as it becomes dark grey rather than black.
I haven't received my z2 yet, but the lack of intense brightness as far as I'm concerned is in NO WAY a bad thing...

Maybe the Z2 is on auto?

Benefit of being old, I find the display's brightness quite sufficient.

Sorry i have no tools measure but was dimmer than iphone 5 and m8. as i said i may had bad panrl looking at rewievs most seems that way
Can you show us proofs of your screen being too dim? Picture it. I am curious to see how it looks like.

I'd just like to add though, for the comparison to be fair, please make sure each device has the same wallpaper, the colour contrasts could be adding to the effect of the Z2 looking dimmer (but that aspect is subjective).

So true. I put LuxLite on my M8 because it was blinding at night, its still too bright.
Well.. It's gone.
I only got one "Overheat" msg in my 13 days with the G3.. And using the ONite batteries I purchased from Amazon increased overall duration of the device..
But then I went to BestBuy and seen first hand the SuperAmoled Screen of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4...
I Immediately went home packed up my G3 and returned it for refund.
With the $200.00 rebate directly from Samsung if you pre-order before October 17th and send in ANY old working smartphone, it made for a great deal for me.
Quite frankly, I don't care if T-Mobile even decides to lock down the Note 4.. The Screen IMO is the most Stunning Screen ever to be put in a Smartphone to date.. and I could live with it stock and just enjoying content on the Note 4.
I'll miss the style and size of the G3 ( which has no equal in that respect ) but SuperAmoled wins my dollars over Backlit LCD.. even if the Note 4 will cost me $100.00 more.. There were no issues of Touchwiz lag whatsoever in my 30 minutes with the device and "Gapgate" was not present on the any of the display models including the Note Edge. If you are even thinking of making the switch for your own personal reasons,
My Suggestion is.. Do It.
Unlocked now lol

Uhhh. Right. I guess you didnt have skydragons kernel and accessibility screen tweaks to make the colors amoled ???

Well AMOLED will definitely look better to most people, although it is not the most natural. I am going to wait for the Nexus 6 to be released and if it is a smaller size than 5.5" (from what I have read there are reports from 5.2" to even 6") then I will probably sell my G3 to get it.
I am still waiting for a bootloader solution and a variety of custom ROM's esp AOSP ones but I think it is not going to come and I expect the Nexus 6 will be easy if not unlocked by Google themselves for the dev community.
Please close this thread.
We don't care about you selling it and buying a Samsung instead...

"The Galaxy Note 4 Basic screen mode has the most accurate colors for Standard (sRGB/Rec.709) consumer content of any Smartphone or Tablet display that we have ever measured." - Displaymate
Plus this
'Displaymate' only actually care about Samsung phones. They test almost nothing else and their results aren't in agreement with everyone elses.

As much as you want to disagree with Displaymate's claims, you can't argue with factual measurements/charts unless you're delusional.

Or you think they are lying..
AMOLED definitely has its pros and cons. Extremely dark and deep blacks (so dark the pixels are off) but the colors are way too saturated. So yeah, depending on one's own personal preference, it can be really good or atrociously bad. I personally prefer more natural colors.
People still buy SamSh!t phones?

I am aware of the AOSP ROM out but I am more concerned about the bootloader being unlocked so we can all flash ROMs through CMW/TWRP instead of all this kdz, Odin etc stuff and having a reboot persistent ROM on all G3 versions (well my D855 at least!). I was used to doing this with my SGS and it was piss easy so having to deal with all this stuff, I just don't have the time to try all it out.
Tbh, since I had been forced to use the LG stock ROM, it's not actually that bad compared to CM11.2 and I don't mind it now but it does lag (for a high spec flagship) and could do with some optimisation.
**Sorry, I have just been told on another thread that the custom ROM's being introduced now actually do persist through reboots so that is exactly what I wanted! I'm gonna try it out this weekend and hopefully find the fix for the lagging.
Dude the bootloader thing is already unlocked how havnt you found out. Lmao

Thank you for actually contributing to the discussion. XDA seems to be full of people who just want to rag one way or another.
I used to think AMoled was awesome, i like how black it is, but now i see the colour on other phones its way to intense.

Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion...
Why are so many of you so defensive about your device?... Buyer's Remorse maybe???
Shouts of "CLOSE THE THREAD" make you sound like your feelings are hurt.. I did not start this thread to start an argument. If you are happy with YOUR G3 then good.. So.. why are some making comments just short of name calling..
This is MY experience with the G3 vs the Note 4..
I feel the N4 is a Superior Device.. it's "The" device to have for 2014 IMO.. But, no device is all things to all people.. I enjoyed my time with the G3.. but the somewhat cloudy screen and low brightness really come to light when placed next to the Note 4.. That's A Fact. couple that with the overheating issues well... you get the picture.
But calm down... they are just telephones.
