I got my VN3 a month or so back and decided to wait on rooting until KitKat was released, allegedly in march. I got tired of waiting and went ahead and rooted, using Kingo 1.1.5.xx (MJE).
I imagine that KitKat is still forthcoming for this phone(?). I've installed a few root apps (Titanium, Mobile Odin, etc.).
Questions:
1. If and when KK is available for the VN3, will I need to unroot the phone?
2. What method should I use...Kingo, Odin?
3. Should I take it easy on how many root apps I install until I know if I'll need to unroot?
4. Will it be worthwhile (or even viable) to install KK, or will most rooted users stay with 4.3?
Thanks,
Sam
i wouldn't worry about that. Our Note 3s will be old news by the time verizon gets around to kitkat. They are bust pushing the new Galaxy S5 right now. But don't despair...Kitkat isn't an exciting leap into the future. I had an AOSP (or AOKP?) on my LG G2, and in the state it was in, I ended up going back to, and being deliriously happy, with 4.3. After running 4.4 with all its issues, when I went back to 4.3 there wasn't a single 4.4 feature I missed.

Sorry I somehow missed this. I have to agree. I actually kept GB 2.3 (build EL26 & 29) on my S2. Bumping it up a time or two for various updates, but always Odin'ed back to EL.
The fact that Vzw was alleged to release it in March prompted me to wait and see if I wanted it. But I'm rooted now and will be fine where I'm at. Absolutely fine, in fact.
One irritation with my S2, however, was that I kept having to deal with the update nag.

Unless your like a lot of people with multiple modern samsung devices that enjoy not having many cool features until kit kat. My Verizon N3 can't get kit kat soon enough. My gear fit and tab pro are being held back on functionalities waiting for my Note!

Having had a Moto X that was destroyed by 4.4 (I left it for the Note 3 before it took Verizon years to get it 4.4.2) and a Nexus 7 that got 4.4, and quickly 4.4.2 after that ----- I can live with 4.3. I agree with the comments that there really isn't anything must have about 4.4. On my Moto X - 4.4 destroyed battery life. My Nexus 7 2013 got much better battery life with 4.3 than it gets with 4.4.2 with greenify.
And yes, I got all caught up in the 4.4 KitKat hype, bought the bars, and believed every word of the "redesigned, less footprint, more battery life" hype that never came true. lol.
Edit: To answer OP's question: The only way I'm considering 4.4 on my Note 3 is if one of the Rom devs here offer it - more specifically CleanRom. Otherwise, happily running 4.3 till I can afford the Note 4. lol.
i didnt care at all UNTIL i got a Tab Pro and Gear Fit that were designed to work with Kit Kat. i have ran into many things that requires Kit Kat on my N3 like the latest S Health for Fit to work fully or Sync 3.0 for sharing files from N3. there were a few more as well.
so to call it useless depends on what you may need it for as i could really use it now.
As Fletch33 states, some people have a need for KitKat. As for me, having stayed with GB for so long, JB 4.3 is quite the upgrade (as is the N3). JB on my S2 just didn't cut it. I can live without KK as long as I have to, but really, it's all academic at this point, since Verizon has passed their timeline of 'sometime in March'. And from what I'm hearing, it may take quite some time to see it happen.
That being the case (and with the seemingly prevailing opinion re:KitKat), I'll just go ahead and setup my now rooted VN3 as I need it to be and reject the KK update offers.
I havent seen a vzw note 3 kitkat yet. Even the devs seem to be waiting for big red. Root and safestrap are great but a locked bootloader has us hamstrung WRT kit-kat.

You happen to know if Verizon even has a KitKat build they are testing for the Note 3? I just want it for certain apps that require 4.4, plus it's nice to have a OS with the latest API levels.
A coworker of mine is testing it on vzw but there have been issues with, you guessed it, signal strength, so this is why we haven't seen an update yet. Shouldn't be too long as she told me that is the only issue being reported

i had the galaxy nexus on vzw before the note 3 and they skipped an update and on the next version release vzw would update the nexus. i'm hoping the note 3 is the same. at this point i'd rather wait for the next release and skip kitkat.

Honestly I buy a device as what it is unless specifically told it will receive x in x months baring a software hitch that needs addressed. Every update is simply a bonus. If I want more I generally turn to the dev community for that something extra. Samsung I think said note 10.1 would get 4.2 I think and I like that but when they get around to it is up to them really. If updates are super important the nexus devices get them all quick. I don't really view it as arrogance so much as we have allocated this many men and this much funds for these updates and when they are ready you'll get them as it's an extra feature to an already finished product.

1. Android 4.4 was announced, it is not "out"
2. Do your homework next time, samsung has a habit of late updates, its a continuing trend with them. Want fast updates? Grab a nexus device.

As another said, announced but not out. I'm use a rom and I can't complain. I have no functionality missing and can complete all my tasks. An update really wouldn't improve that. If it was a security flaw or a device crippling problem I'd have a need for a patch more urgently. Really not a reason to regret buying a device.
Not interested if an updates comes i will use it .
Pointless jumping on the continual why have we not got xxx update yet .

Not this again.. Google's own statistic shows that the majority of users do not care one bit about which version of the software they are using. Another big part of the users with newer versions simply got a prompt and clicked on it.
I was all worked up when my dad's Note 1 got the JB treatment. You know my dad's reaction when he saw JB (jumping from Gingerbread mind you)? "What's the difference?".
The people who want the latest version of Android are mostly fans of technology. And most of them usually just go with newer devices or don't rely on stock software.
So I'm not at all surprised that Samsung is lazy with its updates. There's no real pressure for them and since they are primarily a mass manufacturer then what do they care if 1 000 000 people (probably a lot less) around the world are feeling left out when they probably sell that many devices (total volume) every few days.
The good part is - Android is still open, so you can always jump to a ROM and get the new software if you so wish. I myself am now spoiled by some of Samsung's apps and features so as long as it's Jelly Bean, I'm happy and it does what I've bought the device to do. IF we get 4.4 - great. It should have been 5.0, but again - who cares besides geeks like us.
4.3 should come out after october when they update the S3 and S4, Samsung noted that the note 10.1 would get the next major android update at the time it was thought it would be 5.0 but now we see it is 4.4. I'm worried now that we will never get 5.0 on the 10.1, but that will be many months down the line.

I'm more concerned about fixing bugs. Fix the bugs first and if another version comes along, great -- but still fix the bugs.
Wich makes me ask: what is the best (= most effective) way of reporting bugs so they might get fixed?
I'm not really waiting for 4.3 or 4.4 new features but there's at least one bug (USB host connection) I'd desperately want to have fixed.
It's just business 101.
Samsung is not going to release 4.2.2/4.3 for the Note 10.1 or even the Note 2 for that matter with the impending release of the Note 3 and Note 10.1 2013 Model.
It would hurt potential sales and upgrades. They will come but I doubt anytime soon.,

Actually, 4.4 is not out yet. All they've done is announced the name. 4.3 is still the current version.
That being said, given that the new Note 10.1 will ship with 4.3 (I believe), it is a little annoying (ok - a lot annoying) that there's no news about an upgrade for existing Note 10.1s...
I think they will release sooner than later because they will want to sell more watches.

I have the Tab 2 7.0 bought last August with ICS on it. Already it has been updated twice 4.1.2 and this August 4.2.2. Samsung is now updating Note 2. So the update is coming and Note 10 has a lot more features to tweak. You sound in a hurry for no reason. Why not just enjoy your tablet as is until it does. Apps make the tablet so if you want newness add some apps.
I usually change roms but on my non-rooted tablet launchers, themes and apps. Amazon gives a free paid app every day and plenty of sources to get apps besides Playstore and Samsung just virus scan them first or use an old Android device as test dummy.
I just recently got the note 3 and heard this upgrade might be out on the 28th. Been using jelly bean on my s3 and I personally can't wait for this on the note! Anyone have any note 3 specific hopes with this about to be released?

Hate to be a debbie downer, but unless they've streamlined the upgrade process for phones, we won't be getting 4.4 on the 28th.
I'm very excited for this, this release will end up dictating whether or not I end up getting the note 3. I am here with my GNex and if the note 3 can end up getting 4.4 soon (via custom roms of course) fast ill end up with the note 3. This is all depending on verizon getting the new nexus of course.
I don't think kit kat will be all that significant based on leaked info but I'm still looking forward to it

Verizon won't let us have KitKat until probably April of next year.
You're better off hoping the bootloader gets unlocked soon so we can put it in ourselves. That's the only way we'll get it any time relatively soon.
We will get KitKat when we have custom ROMs, long before Verizon's OTA.
We will get KitKat when "IF" we have custom ROMs, long before Verizon's OTA.
I'm interested in what Google has in store for us with Kit Kat but I think Android Jelly Bean 4.1 - 4.3 has been awesome. I'm so content with Android 4.3 on my Galaxy Note 3 that I just can't get overly excited.

When. It will happen. It's just been a few days since release. Devs aren't happy with Samsung, so many don't want to mess with it, but either the devs working now will have a breakthrough or another will yawn and make a bootstrap within hours. Not sure if a bootloader unlock will come around without someone getting a leaked unlock key from some Samsung guy in China. It's not about being possible or not, it's about a skilled devs desire to spend time on it.

And this is why I avoided this phone. The Note 3 is hands down the best phone right now but as soon as the software updates roll in from Google you start to think twice (and that's with a fully unlocked bootloader on the Note 2). With all the tweaks and software enhancements it's not an overnight job. By the time my Note 2 gets 4.3, kitkat 4.4 will be about a month or more old.
The bad part about Android is.. You compromise on the software and get the note 3 or you compromise on the hardware and get a nexus device.. no sd, usually poor battery, aging processors the list goes on. Except Google edition s4, HTC one of course

Well I, for one, am very anxious for the KitKat announcement specifically to see how the rumors play out in terms of Android becoming more modular and bypassing OEM and carrier update schedules. It's sounding like the stock launcher is going to end up in the Play Store, and I've also heard that the notification system could be separated from the Android framework allowing for 3rd party notification bars.
At that point, the only user-facing things left to the OEMs are the phone app and the settings (anything else I'm missing?). That makes me feel much better about my new 2-year contract with VZW.
Also, Hangouts SMS integration can't get here fast enough. Not pleased with Samsung's Messenger app.

I'm getting frustrated with Samsung because until now my Samsung tablets are stuck at 4.4.2. If Samsung can release a new phone/tablet every 3 months with the latest OS then why can't they update the OS of the older ones at the same rate? Why do we ever bother reading the news about Android's latest Lollipop if we can't even get them on time? All I see is - it's coming, yeah right! What kind of software developers or engineers they have in there? Maybe they only have one guy working on it that's why it's taking so long or never at all. With all that money that they have, they can't even do this simple things. I guess that's why they couldn't beat Apple at their own game. Anyway, I'm out. Thanks for reading!

Just what do you see on Lollipop that makes you want it so bad.
I have purposely turned off OS updates on my N7 as don't want it. The device has not enough power to operate more and more memory intensive OS.
I let my N4 get updated and now regret it. Had no problems prior but now the battery drains overnight if left on standby. I used to let it go for several days before charging now I have to ensure it is plugged in and recharged nightly. This battery drain is being experienced by others. I don't want to have to do a complete factory reset and load everything again which is what some people recommend when doing these updates. Lollipop to me offers nothing that I want and it removed the ability to quickly close all apps which now must be done individually a pain. That plus the chance of other problems makes me want to leave my tab as is.
Google makes the Nexus line.
Google makes Android.
It's to be expected that a Nexus gets the Android updates first.

Whats so good about lollipop..... wellllll, on my phone after lollipop update I went from a 32k antutu to a 48k antutu, after lollipop im getting noticeably better performance in browsing and gaming, after lollipop im getting MUCH better battery life, after lollipop my phone runs like I want it to. As for being more memory intensive better look again. In its initial release lollipop had a memory leak, that was fixed so now it is easier on your device than kitkat. As for the close all in recent tasks which has been renamed...its still there. As always brand specific features will overwrite stock features though.
So in short why would someone want lollipop? It is simply better in almost every way. One of the few updates I have thought worthy of taking.

Yup, it'll either be out this year, next year, or the year after that. Trust me. Don't worry about it. Keep buying Samsung tablets, they're great.

lol seriously? 4.4.2 is just so out of date, it makes sense everyone is complaining.
not to mention, there's so many dumb bugs on the official GTP 8.4 firmware that it's pretty obvious this model is an "afterthought" for samsung
i actually don't expect ANY further updates for this model, it's pretty clear that when a company replaces a product with a newer product just 4 months after the product comes out (Tab S) they consider the first product a failure and don't care about it anymore

in CM12 for tab pro 10.1 if you set an unlock pattern. does it appear on the first screen after pushing power button(like stock) or do you have to swipe for it to appear? (which means additional screen/step before unlock)
edit: oh well, nevermind..

I only see the tab s 8.4 listed.
Samsung has released Android Lollipop 5.0.1 today, first in Poland (SM-910C). Samsung seems to be using Poland as a test ground, hoping users will bring up bugs and battery life problems so Samsung may release a fixed and near perfect software to the widespread community. Now, it's a waiting game until it reaches OTA for Verizon Customers. Reaching root may be difficult on Lollipop 5.0.1, even impossible as far as we know. Besides the fact and enjoyment of root, stock TouchWiz incorporated into Lollipop on the Note 4 will be by far the best OS of and across all Android devices.
Near perfect? You sound very optimistic. Best os across all android platforms? You sound very very optimistic. But I do hope you are right.
I have been surprised on how much I have not missed Root. I just came from the S4 MDK and had CM12 on it. Really do miss Lollipop, but I really do love this phone. Sad to say though, with Verizon it maybe 6 months before we see Lollipop.
I think we'll get Lollipop before mid-March. VZW got it out very quickly for the S5 so I believe that they are working on it now.

What a tease. I thought it came out was all excited. LET DOWN
What a terrible thread title, you made it sound like there was a release posted here. In any case there's already a lollipop waiting thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-verizon/general/lolipop-jan-15-t2989509

If Samsung did get lollipop on the retail N4 soon and it was rootable I would actually use my upgrade and get the N4. Currently still using a rooted N3 and honestly very happy with it, but the temptation for a rooted N4 with lollipop would probably be too much.

I moved to the N4 from the S4 MDK with CM12 also. I thought Id miss root a LOT more than I do. Really the ONLY things Im missing though are viper4android audio, and full mSD read/write access. Cant wait to see Lollipop on my Note4. And hopefully that root.

I use SoundFX as my sound FX and equalizer for apps which support it. Try it out
I just hope they have de-touchwizzed it a bit so we can enjoy all the bliss of Lollipop. If nothing else add a AOSP theme in the settings. Give us the option. I think Samy would sale a lot more phones if they gave the users a theme option. I don't see it happening though.

I read on the S5 forum that viper no longer works with 5.0 lollipop due to the linux kernel being enforcing along with some other policies. Plus development for viper has stopped.

Sorry, but there's already a thread for the discussion of Lollipop for this device - please keep things in their appropriate place; no need for this thread.

I just upgraded my ailing SIII to the Verizon Note 3 through Amazon. I was well aware of the unrootability of 4.4.4 on Verizon and risked it. I was hoping it would arrive and try to do an immediate update to 4.4.4. Wouldn't you know it, the damn thing came with 4.4.4 preloaded! So now I'm stuck unrooted, like many others. I've never lived unrooted before. I feel like a chain is wrapped around my phones ankle. So..... how to live unrooted? I'm curious of what apps users are using on a unrooted Note 3 to squeeze as much tweaking as possible out of their devices.

I would say I feel your pain but I have never owned an android phone that I didn't root. I'm using the Note 3 due to the Note 4 root issues and who knows what the Note 5 brick wall will be like. I need unlimited data tethering which is my number 1 reason for root.
Past that I guess using custom home screens are what you will have to play with...

Other than my Amazon Fire TV Stick, this is the first phone I've not been able to root. I haven't been a huge rom switcher the last year or so, but there are just too many apps that require root I didn't think did. I'm good with NOVA as my launcher, and the rest of the interface is decent. It's the battery and speed tweaks I'm after. Oh well. Perhaps someday it will get root.
You may want to sell it and get another Note 3 that actually has root.
You could get a Note Edge Developer Edition or a Nexus 6.
Note 4 Developer Edition is out of stock, but you could keep checking to see id Samsung gets any.
Or keep following the AT&T and Verizon root threads for Note 4, it may get root.
Note 3 may not get root.

It's not imperative enough for me to sell it and try to get something else if i can't root it. Just an annoyance.
