I just recently got the note 3 and heard this upgrade might be out on the 28th. Been using jelly bean on my s3 and I personally can't wait for this on the note! Anyone have any note 3 specific hopes with this about to be released?

Hate to be a debbie downer, but unless they've streamlined the upgrade process for phones, we won't be getting 4.4 on the 28th.
I'm very excited for this, this release will end up dictating whether or not I end up getting the note 3. I am here with my GNex and if the note 3 can end up getting 4.4 soon (via custom roms of course) fast ill end up with the note 3. This is all depending on verizon getting the new nexus of course.
I don't think kit kat will be all that significant based on leaked info but I'm still looking forward to it

I would be surprised if we get the 4.4 update that fast. Verizon is always one of the last to get updates for Android. So don't hold your breath.
Well I hope it's just a whole new feel at the very least.

Dont forget having to shoe horn in 50lbs of bloat as well!
What are you guys smoking?
Verizon won't let us have KitKat until probably April of next year.
You're better off hoping the bootloader gets unlocked soon so we can put it in ourselves. That's the only way we'll get it any time relatively soon.
We will get KitKat when we have custom ROMs, long before Verizon's OTA.
We will get KitKat when "IF" we have custom ROMs, long before Verizon's OTA.
I'm interested in what Google has in store for us with Kit Kat but I think Android Jelly Bean 4.1 - 4.3 has been awesome. I'm so content with Android 4.3 on my Galaxy Note 3 that I just can't get overly excited.

When. It will happen. It's just been a few days since release. Devs aren't happy with Samsung, so many don't want to mess with it, but either the devs working now will have a breakthrough or another will yawn and make a bootstrap within hours. Not sure if a bootloader unlock will come around without someone getting a leaked unlock key from some Samsung guy in China. It's not about being possible or not, it's about a skilled devs desire to spend time on it.

And this is why I avoided this phone. The Note 3 is hands down the best phone right now but as soon as the software updates roll in from Google you start to think twice (and that's with a fully unlocked bootloader on the Note 2). With all the tweaks and software enhancements it's not an overnight job. By the time my Note 2 gets 4.3, kitkat 4.4 will be about a month or more old.
The bad part about Android is.. You compromise on the software and get the note 3 or you compromise on the hardware and get a nexus device.. no sd, usually poor battery, aging processors the list goes on. Except Google edition s4, HTC one of course

Well I, for one, am very anxious for the KitKat announcement specifically to see how the rumors play out in terms of Android becoming more modular and bypassing OEM and carrier update schedules. It's sounding like the stock launcher is going to end up in the Play Store, and I've also heard that the notification system could be separated from the Android framework allowing for 3rd party notification bars.
At that point, the only user-facing things left to the OEMs are the phone app and the settings (anything else I'm missing?). That makes me feel much better about my new 2-year contract with VZW.
Also, Hangouts SMS integration can't get here fast enough. Not pleased with Samsung's Messenger app.

So according to the samsung web page it states that jelly bean is coming soon the the gs3. Did anyone else notice this? https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?...71336618.59771.253235488046600&type=1&theater
btw let me note im not sure how legit the page is but if it is in fact true then this is some great and exciting news =)
Samsung has been showing it's intent to make their updates faster...what will the unified carrier hardware and adding in 2 gigs of RAM for futureproofing.
I hope so...someone has said Q3 2012...we'll see

Thought about selling my gs3 to get the gnex. Then I saw google also released a PDK for JB. I figured it would shorten the wait for Sammy to give us JB.
And I thought, if jellybean is that nice on the gnex, it's gonna be bananas on this phone.
Besides, I'm loving everything about this phone and I think I'll get a nexus 7 for my jellybean fix.

If the next Nexus phone is coming from Motorola Mobility Samsung will be sure to get JB into the GS3 by then to attract future customers.
I saw Q3 after JB announcement watching IO. Who knows when... but I don't think Samsung is waiting around to release it on their flagship phone.

Even if it is Q3, that starts tomorrow and only lasts through September. I think I can suffer through 3 or so months of ICS ;-) And besides... if they're already working on JB I think we'll probably have leaked builds within a week of the device's actual release. Exciting times ahead...

I'm not sure i care about when samsung pushes the JB update to us
i just want pure google JB, damnit this phone will be perfect with pure jb
Well coming soon... hopefully that means SOON. Except if their is really no Flash support or no one can get it to work then forget it. I use Full sites not the craptastic mobile ones.
I really hope Samsung doesn't remove the Google Now search feature from JB (in order to keep it from "competing" with S Voice). One of the few things that bugs me about the TouchWiz implementation is how they remove the stock Android keyboard, in favor of the Samsung Keypad... which is a little ominous. Of course, you can just install the "stock" kb from the Market (if those "ports" are really as good as the stock versions; I'm using the "ICS kb" now on my Vibrant, and it seems pretty good, but haven't spent enough time with the stock kb to judge if it's the same)... I doubt Google Now will be made available the same way!

Already pre-ordered my Nexus 7. Can't wait for it to be shipped.
now.note 2 willnot have 4.2..direct 4.3 here is proof
Australian carrier Telstra has received a confirmation that the Samsung Galaxy Note II 4G model will skip Android 4.2.2 and will be updated straight to the 4.3 Jelly Bean. It doesn't seem to be a regional thing either - all Galaxy Note II units might be treated that way.
Here is the official quote from Telstra's support page:
Samsung have elected globally to skip the 4.2.2 update for this device and will instead go to a newer version of Android. No schedule has been provided for this update.
We already know that Samsung Galaxy Note II will live long enough to taste the Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, so owners shouldn't worry about the Android updates.
Meanwhile, Samsung still manages to keep the upcoming Galaxy Note III under wraps, but a picture taken with it popped up in Picasa yesterday. It hardly gives us much info, but it does confirm the device model number - N9005. This will most probably going to be the Snapdragon 800 version of the phablet with the revamped Exynos 5 powering the N9000 version.
The Note III will be announced on September 4 ahead of IFA in Berlin. It's expected to bring 5.7" 1080p Super AMOLED display and 3GB of RAM.

Oh how truly awful it is for you! You have to wait a little to get an update that most 2012 phones will never even see Officially, must be hearbreaking and truly disappointing that your phone is being supported and getting the very latest and greatest OS version.
I bet the very same people would be complaining if Samsung updated the Note2 to 4.2.2 now and took even longer to update it to 4.3 and 5.0.
By the way, can someone name me one other 2012 Android phone sitting on 4.2.2 other than the Nexus 4? also, please name me one OTHER 2012 Android phone, other than Note2 (plus possibly GS3) and N4 that is confirmed to be getting 4.3?

I'm still thinking about getting this phone and wondering how fast Motorola will be with their updates. Being that they are owned by Google, it's kind of baffling to me that it ships with 4.2 instead of 4.3 right about of the box.
And with 4.4 on the horizon, I'm not expecting it to be updated like a Nexus device but hoping they won't drag ass and take forever and a day. This would be my first Motorola device and I've heard about them being terrible with updates in the past but that was before Google bought them out.
Unless someone here can tell the future....

Someone with an inside source said that their timetable for releases is 2 months after a new version is released.
Part of the requirements for the purchase of Moto was that they couldn't receive any special treatment when it came to code release from Google. Which means that they don't get the source code for new versions before any other vendor unless they have been chosen to build a nexus device. I that case they can only work on it in connection with the Google Android team.
The two month timetable isn't assume h that has been officially confirmed, so it may not be completely accurate.

I've read a few articles which mentioned that although Motorola is now owned by Google, they are in fact keeping a "firewall" between the two companies. This could explain why the Moto X was released with 4.2 instead of 4.3.
Also, based on what I've seen in recent trends, carriers will be releasing Android OS updates over the air as opposed the Motorola (at least here in the States). Some approach OS updates better than others. Verizon is known to take their time releasing updates to phones because of the extensive testing they do with an upcoming update for a particular device. Take for instance the Droid DNA, a device released close to the end of last year which is only now getting the update to 4.2 from 4.1. I sincerely hope the Moto X does not see such neglect when it comes to future updates but I also wouldn't be surprised.
Over the years I have learned one thing. If it's not a nexus, expect the absolute worst case scenario for ROM updates.
with the ability to flash roms coming soon this may not matter

I'd like to believe that Moto offers better support than Samsung and HTC. The 4.3 update is still in the works but hard to put an eta on it as they probably still need time to make sure the moto apps and hardware is optimized to work properly. Other than improved performance and stability, I'm not missing anything by using 4.2.2 for now.
One good thing this phone has going for it is it's pretty much stock Android. No Touchwiz, Sense or any other overlay like Motoblur. This means it should be easier and faster to update since they just have to get the few things working on the next version. I wouldn't be surprised if Motorola skipped 4.3 and went straight to 4.4 since it's close to being released.

This. If it's going to take moto two months, expect longer because it will need to be blessed by the carriers before OTA updates are pushed out.
I wonder where the T Mobile X fits in then... Will it be updated straight from Moto? If not that might be a big problem because T Mobile obviously doesn't even support the phone.

You're right. I actually had a big long post about how once Motorola gets the code, implements their features, at&t still has to test it and approve. Hopefully, since it's basically stock android, it won't take as long because the skinning process doesn't have to happen.

Motorola has a very mixed record so far with their updates. The OG Droid was actually quite good at getting updates in a timely manner and only trailed the Nexus by a few weeks. After Motorola switched to Blur though for all their devices they lagged behind by a few months and even though with Jelly Bean they removed most of the Blur apps in favor of stock, that was still nearly what 9 months after 4.1's source was released before the Razr, Bionic, Droid 4 all got it. In fact for a while there they were one of the slowest at releasing their updates.
Now the Moto X is a new beast though and different from what Motorola has done now so it's hard to say. All the previous devices were part of the "old motorola" and the X is the first device of the "new motorola". The X is almost pure stock so there is very little tweaking that will need to be done. They just need to add in support for their Camera App, Active Display and Touchless Controls, do any kernel updates/bug fixes and then test/resolve any new bugs that popped up in 4.3. Motorola has said that an update is in the works and will come out soon with many improvements for the Moto X. Is this 4.3 or just a newer 4.2.2 build? We don't know.
I'd like to imagine that we will see 4.3 released sometime between now and early October on all carriers considering Samsung announced they will begin to roll out 4.3 to the SGS4, SGS3 and Note2. If Motorola is the first to release a stable, solid build of 4.3 for their new X8 devices and continues to keep up with their updates in a quick and timely manner, it would do a lot to rebuild their name. Right now we just have to wait and see if Motorola is serious about getting better about releasing timely updates or not.

I'm in contact with Punit Soni (Moto X product Manager). He's very active on Google+ and he addressed the update and OTA of 4.3 questions. He said when they officially released the device to distributors, 4.3 just got announced. So it was either delay the Moto X and piss off many pre-ordering customers, or continue with the primary plan and push through with 4.2.2.
He said the update is "Coming soon" as they always say, and he promises many fixes like Camera improvements, Picasa or Google Photos sync for Gallery, and OS 4.3 very soon.
"When will then be now? Soon!"
EDIT: wrong thread.

Each OEM gets the source at the same time. Makes no difference. The only reason it takes so long is a mixture between putting loads of framework in. And wanting to get new hardware out.
Moto, working with next to stock android, will be much much faster. No they dont get special treatment per se. But time will be light speed compared to HTC and Samsung

If it goes the way the Tmobile nexus 4 goes than it will be updated right away. My son has the nexus4 bought directly from Tmobile store & it receives updates along with those bought directly from Google. I know its still a nexus and the moto x isn't but from what I understand the Tmobile version of the x doesn't have any carrier installed stuff on it, so hopefully it will be treated as a device like the Google editions.

I got my VN3 a month or so back and decided to wait on rooting until KitKat was released, allegedly in march. I got tired of waiting and went ahead and rooted, using Kingo 1.1.5.xx (MJE).
I imagine that KitKat is still forthcoming for this phone(?). I've installed a few root apps (Titanium, Mobile Odin, etc.).
Questions:
1. If and when KK is available for the VN3, will I need to unroot the phone?
2. What method should I use...Kingo, Odin?
3. Should I take it easy on how many root apps I install until I know if I'll need to unroot?
4. Will it be worthwhile (or even viable) to install KK, or will most rooted users stay with 4.3?
Thanks,
Sam
i wouldn't worry about that. Our Note 3s will be old news by the time verizon gets around to kitkat. They are bust pushing the new Galaxy S5 right now. But don't despair...Kitkat isn't an exciting leap into the future. I had an AOSP (or AOKP?) on my LG G2, and in the state it was in, I ended up going back to, and being deliriously happy, with 4.3. After running 4.4 with all its issues, when I went back to 4.3 there wasn't a single 4.4 feature I missed.

Sorry I somehow missed this. I have to agree. I actually kept GB 2.3 (build EL26 & 29) on my S2. Bumping it up a time or two for various updates, but always Odin'ed back to EL.
The fact that Vzw was alleged to release it in March prompted me to wait and see if I wanted it. But I'm rooted now and will be fine where I'm at. Absolutely fine, in fact.
One irritation with my S2, however, was that I kept having to deal with the update nag.

Having had a Moto X that was destroyed by 4.4 (I left it for the Note 3 before it took Verizon years to get it 4.4.2) and a Nexus 7 that got 4.4, and quickly 4.4.2 after that ----- I can live with 4.3. I agree with the comments that there really isn't anything must have about 4.4. On my Moto X - 4.4 destroyed battery life. My Nexus 7 2013 got much better battery life with 4.3 than it gets with 4.4.2 with greenify.
And yes, I got all caught up in the 4.4 KitKat hype, bought the bars, and believed every word of the "redesigned, less footprint, more battery life" hype that never came true. lol.
Edit: To answer OP's question: The only way I'm considering 4.4 on my Note 3 is if one of the Rom devs here offer it - more specifically CleanRom. Otherwise, happily running 4.3 till I can afford the Note 4. lol.
i didnt care at all UNTIL i got a Tab Pro and Gear Fit that were designed to work with Kit Kat. i have ran into many things that requires Kit Kat on my N3 like the latest S Health for Fit to work fully or Sync 3.0 for sharing files from N3. there were a few more as well.
so to call it useless depends on what you may need it for as i could really use it now.
As Fletch33 states, some people have a need for KitKat. As for me, having stayed with GB for so long, JB 4.3 is quite the upgrade (as is the N3). JB on my S2 just didn't cut it. I can live without KK as long as I have to, but really, it's all academic at this point, since Verizon has passed their timeline of 'sometime in March'. And from what I'm hearing, it may take quite some time to see it happen.
That being the case (and with the seemingly prevailing opinion re:KitKat), I'll just go ahead and setup my now rooted VN3 as I need it to be and reject the KK update offers.
I havent seen a vzw note 3 kitkat yet. Even the devs seem to be waiting for big red. Root and safestrap are great but a locked bootloader has us hamstrung WRT kit-kat.

Which is another valid reason to stay put...

i didnt care at all UNTIL i got a Tab Pro and Gear Fit that were designed to work with Kit Kat. i have ran into many things that requires Kit Kat on my N3 like the latest S Health for Fit to work fully or Sync 3.0 for sharing files from N3. there were a few more as well.
so to call it useless depends on what you may need it for as i could really use it now.

not sure about the others but fitness for gear works great and essentially replacing s-health totally at some point. the apps are almost identical when you open them. I work for Samsung.

You happen to know if Verizon even has a KitKat build they are testing for the Note 3? I just want it for certain apps that require 4.4, plus it's nice to have a OS with the latest API levels.
A coworker of mine is testing it on vzw but there have been issues with, you guessed it, signal strength, so this is why we haven't seen an update yet. Shouldn't be too long as she told me that is the only issue being reported

i had the galaxy nexus on vzw before the note 3 and they skipped an update and on the next version release vzw would update the nexus. i'm hoping the note 3 is the same. at this point i'd rather wait for the next release and skip kitkat.

Or even 4.4.3 would be worth the wait. Pretty sick of Verizon though, I'm about to puke.
After only a day from the official presentation from Google, there are already rumors tnat note 2 will get the Android 5.0, or so called Android L.
This is the first link i came across that it has info about that:

Please comment and share thoughts about the update.

I think we will get cm, aokp based roms but i really doubt about official samsung update. You should trust samsung with this
For me no doubt, that we will get it cause N2 is so popular even after nearly 2 years and Samsung will produce and sell this device surely one more year :good:
I really doubt of an official samsung update.... but let's hope....
Honestly I'd prefere a kernel update on the kitkat release.... and some open sourcing of the exynos ****.... :crying::crying:
Suppose we could hope? Even for KK 4.4.2 or 4.4.3 ota soon?
No we won't get it. It's not the matter of popularity of the device or anything. It's that each manufacturer must provide at least 18 months of support or 3 major updates. We got ourselves 4.1.2, 4.3 and 4.4.2. So yeah, the support for the device is over. Samsung has stop support for S3, so it's our turn now

we are lucky enough to get kitkat.
I am pessimistic about Samsung coding and releasing another update for such an old phone. Even though its pretty powerful and popular .

Yeah I'm sure that we'll get it via Omni, CM, aosp roms, but I'll miss the tw.

i apologize if i'm off topic
i have htc desire HD and with the help and roms of this site i like my phone again
I found Note II in a special price (the 4G edition) and i wanna ask if it is the right decision to purchase it or to go for the samsung S4
I know the differences between this two phones. I just don't want to buy a phone near its end of life
Thank you
Kostas
My S4 i9506 still didnt get KK and you here asking for android L? You should be grateful that samsung remembered it has a device called note 2
Samsung? forget it...
CM or aosp worth looking forward to
I wonder when CM AOSP or OMNI release come since 4.4 I am using mostly aosp based roms . and they are taking one more step ahead every day. I didnt miss tw
Well landing of 4.4 has been a major achievement post all the rubble created.
5.0 will definitely not be delivered to Note 2.
How else will you be motivated to buy those expensive plastic devices

Not before it's official release which will be in a few months (hopefully).
Having 4.4.2 kernel sources may allow future 5.x AOSP builds for N710x
