Quite disappointed - Galaxy Note 10.1 General

As you may ask know, Android 4.4 is out and yet no official 4.2 yet for our note 10.1talk more of 4.4. Samsung gradually becoming as arrogant as Apple.. Lol
I'm starting to regret buying this device.. What do all think?

Honestly I buy a device as what it is unless specifically told it will receive x in x months baring a software hitch that needs addressed. Every update is simply a bonus. If I want more I generally turn to the dev community for that something extra. Samsung I think said note 10.1 would get 4.2 I think and I like that but when they get around to it is up to them really. If updates are super important the nexus devices get them all quick. I don't really view it as arrogance so much as we have allocated this many men and this much funds for these updates and when they are ready you'll get them as it's an extra feature to an already finished product.

1. Android 4.4 was announced, it is not "out"
2. Do your homework next time, samsung has a habit of late updates, its a continuing trend with them. Want fast updates? Grab a nexus device.

As another said, announced but not out. I'm use a rom and I can't complain. I have no functionality missing and can complete all my tasks. An update really wouldn't improve that. If it was a security flaw or a device crippling problem I'd have a need for a patch more urgently. Really not a reason to regret buying a device.

Not interested if an updates comes i will use it .
Pointless jumping on the continual why have we not got xxx update yet .

Not this again.. Google's own statistic shows that the majority of users do not care one bit about which version of the software they are using. Another big part of the users with newer versions simply got a prompt and clicked on it.
I was all worked up when my dad's Note 1 got the JB treatment. You know my dad's reaction when he saw JB (jumping from Gingerbread mind you)? "What's the difference?".
The people who want the latest version of Android are mostly fans of technology. And most of them usually just go with newer devices or don't rely on stock software.
So I'm not at all surprised that Samsung is lazy with its updates. There's no real pressure for them and since they are primarily a mass manufacturer then what do they care if 1 000 000 people (probably a lot less) around the world are feeling left out when they probably sell that many devices (total volume) every few days.
The good part is - Android is still open, so you can always jump to a ROM and get the new software if you so wish. I myself am now spoiled by some of Samsung's apps and features so as long as it's Jelly Bean, I'm happy and it does what I've bought the device to do. IF we get 4.4 - great. It should have been 5.0, but again - who cares besides geeks like us.

4.3 should come out after october when they update the S3 and S4, Samsung noted that the note 10.1 would get the next major android update at the time it was thought it would be 5.0 but now we see it is 4.4. I'm worried now that we will never get 5.0 on the 10.1, but that will be many months down the line.

delete

I'm more concerned about fixing bugs. Fix the bugs first and if another version comes along, great -- but still fix the bugs.

Wich makes me ask: what is the best (= most effective) way of reporting bugs so they might get fixed?
I'm not really waiting for 4.3 or 4.4 new features but there's at least one bug (USB host connection) I'd desperately want to have fixed.

It's just business 101.
Samsung is not going to release 4.2.2/4.3 for the Note 10.1 or even the Note 2 for that matter with the impending release of the Note 3 and Note 10.1 2013 Model.
It would hurt potential sales and upgrades. They will come but I doubt anytime soon.,

Actually, 4.4 is not out yet. All they've done is announced the name. 4.3 is still the current version.
That being said, given that the new Note 10.1 will ship with 4.3 (I believe), it is a little annoying (ok - a lot annoying) that there's no news about an upgrade for existing Note 10.1s...

I think they will release sooner than later because they will want to sell more watches.

I have the Tab 2 7.0 bought last August with ICS on it. Already it has been updated twice 4.1.2 and this August 4.2.2. Samsung is now updating Note 2. So the update is coming and Note 10 has a lot more features to tweak. You sound in a hurry for no reason. Why not just enjoy your tablet as is until it does. Apps make the tablet so if you want newness add some apps.
I usually change roms but on my non-rooted tablet launchers, themes and apps. Amazon gives a free paid app every day and plenty of sources to get apps besides Playstore and Samsung just virus scan them first or use an old Android device as test dummy.

Anticipating the next s3 update...

What do you think the next s3 update will be? 4.2? 4.2.1? 5.0?
What new tw features do you think or hope it will bring?
When do you think it will come?
I don't mind if they skip on 4.2.x to concentrate on the next bomb they might drop (4.3/5.0) and as far as new tw features I'd like more social, like windows phone style baking in of Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Google plus, path, viber etc, they could make some deals and take it to the next level.
Saying that, i am more than happy with 4.1.2 with nova 2 prime, phone is sick, fast and smooth!

a 4.2 update would be easy for them, its a small upgrade in terms of what we're use to, So I don't think Google will announce another Android version until Google I/O which is in July I think so being Samsung I believe this 4.2 update will be in August and the 4.3/5.0 released in November lol.
No but really they should release the 4.2 update, they won't skip it.
Somewhere I read that 4.2 will be released... don't remember where, so they won't be skipping it
Im sure next update from android will be 5.0
Hope it's not 4.2 rather 4.2.1 as there been alot of problems with 4.2, which they quickly updated on Nexus smartphones and Tabs.
Tbh i be very surprised if we see 5.0 on the international Galaxy S3 due to it only having 1gb of ram, if 5.0 does come it more likely be for the LTE & Note II as 5.0 is rumored to need 2gb of ram.
The Galaxy S4 & Note III on the otherhand, will 100% get 5.0 update sometime this year

I still believe they will do an update this January (or February at most) with their own fix for the /dev/exynos-mem security hole And if they are able to use 4.2.1 with it then it will be a lot better for us - but I am not holding my breath
i think there'll be a 5.0 and we'll be on it with custom roms when 4.2.1 hits

That "security hole" is already patched up in the new 4.1.2 firmwares. See the recent XXELLA.
Lol guys getting me excited about updates
What would we gain from the 4.2.1 hehe touch wiz extras? Google " says" multiple user log in accounts, that would be useful in those awkward moments when someone wants to separate me from my beloved s3 ... Always worried about my Facebook status or messages to the missus

Official 4.2 update discussion.

Hi.
I saw official launch of mega series on samsung site.
Mega 5.8 and 6.3 are using dual core processor with 1 gb of ram. ( 1.5 gb on gsmarena)
They are launched with 4.2.2.
So by this I can assume that sammy will roll out 4.2.2 for note as well. Though wait will be long.
What's your take on this. Any views?

Hardware is NOT an issue.
Sammobile received news from an insider a few months ago that the Galaxy S2 and the Galaxy Note should both be getting updates to 4.2.2.
Their insider isn't always right though, so this could just be a load of bollocks but still. You never know...
Another faulty update process made with no interest and no real testing at all? Thanks, but no thanks. I'll stick to 4.1.2 after a clean flash, which will surely be the peak for this device in terms of performance/functionality/estability.
But of course will be interesting for the dev community, if we all live enough to see it...

While I hope we can get one or two more performance updates (especially regarding the S-Note application!) plus an updated unlock screen, I don't believe the phone needs anything else. My aging N7000 has served me well, especially after a fresh battery replacement.
I doubt that the update will be of any use if it isn't released any time soon. This fall the Note will have been available for 2 years. That's a very long life circle for a phone. Very soon people's Notes will start to die, one after another. And by the time the update will be published there will be hardly any Notes left

4.2 should come for our Note: Galaxy S4 Mini and Galaxy Tab 3 have a dual core proccesor and 1 gb RAM Specs. Samsung sold more than 15 millon of GT N7000 so, its not an unknow phone like the Galaxy Fame or others and they will bring still a lot of support. I guess the 2014 will be the last year of updates for our Note. Dont wait to a major update this year, they first need to finish updating the 4.1.2 to the whole world, then will start the 4.2 updates. You might wait to a November/December leak...
Sorry my bad english
I do not beleive for any future update. SAM forget about his childs after the year. I faced with this already with my Galaxy Tab 10.1. Spec is the same like Note. But last update comes more then year ago, it was 4.0.4
The Note WILL receive Android 4.2.2. It will, however, be the last official update that it'll receive.
There's no date for the update. Samsung will update both the Note II and the S3 before, so when they receive it, we can expect it in about a month or two.

My statement, as you say, is based on history and facts.
First off, SamMobile already confirmed that the Note and the S2 will receive Android 4.2.2, and that it'll be the last official update. Do a simple search and you'll confirm it. They have the track record to back this.
Source: http://www.sammobile.com/2013/03/18...roid-5-0-for-the-galaxy-s-iii-galaxy-note-ii/
Then, this is exactly the same situation that happened with 4.1.1 and 4.1.2.
Rest assured, we'll receive 4.2.2. It'll come after the Note 2 and the S3, and before the Red Sox wins another WS.
Well I hope your right. But sammobile has been wrong many times in the past. Maybe when the dodgers win

well anyway the TW 4.2 isn't particularly good for me. And btw, the smart scroll and those gesture features, are they purely firmware features or they are hardware dependent too? We got the smart scroll in 4.1.2 upgrade, not sure if we'd get the smart scroll this time...

However, SamMobile said some devices will get Android 5.0, while this android build wasn't showed by Google or even leaked. So we dont know if SamMobile's source was saying the truth or not. We dont know if 4.2.2 will be the last update, if will get S4 UI, if will be more faster, we dont know ANYTHING about this. The best thing we can do right now is look at the S3 leaked 4.2.2 firmware, because i think it will be the same rom that could have in our phones. I expect we will have the update (or the leak) in November or December.

Maybe because it's the only country in the world when they bother to play it?
4.1.2 or 4.2.2........It doesn't matter much until and unless samsung stabalizes the update...........they released 4.1.2 update so late...and it was not smooth and performance wise it's so power hungry.
Also the touchwhiz interface is so slow with 4.1.2 update. So samsung must stabalize it before jumping it to 4.2.2
Well note still is a very capable phone. But its true that it has almost served its purpose. Spending time to make its update will need more workforce and distraction from focusing on newer devices. We will also get bore from it soon. But i still am happy to have this device and it was a nice decision to opt for this device. Though it will get the 4.2.2, but not the KLP...

Agreed. HTC's 2013 "flagship" and savior device shipped with 4.1 and is still in the process of getting 4.2. There are more Google-caused issues in 4.2 than there are in 4.1 so it’s great it has new features everyone wants but the same people *****ing about not having it will be the first to ***** if battery life is less, BT is borked, or if anything is inferior to 4.1. And if Samsung released a rushed and buggy N2 4.2 update those same people would be up in arms. 4.1>4.2 isn't a major update and 4.1 isn't broken.

Did you read the article? It looks like it was written by a kid.
The upcoming Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean for both Samsung Galaxy S3 & Galaxy Note 2 is reported to be delayed again and scheduled not earlier than November 2013. Factors such as the Galaxy S4 sales, Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and K Build release date affected the update release date. There's no source for the information other than "is reported." And does anyone here think Samsung, a company with a $12B R&D budget, is so single threaded or low on resources that something like soft SGS4 sales or doing multiple updates across different devices at the same time is going to tax them? The SGS4's been on the market for four months and punishing the SGS3 or N2 by stalling their update to 4.2 isn't going to help or hurt its sales. Outside XDA people don’t even know what version of Android their running. At most, they know they know “Jelly Bean” is the latest and 4.1 is JB. HTC didn't think launching their new flagship on 4.1 was going to hurt sales and it took them four months to bring it up to 4.2. And since Samsung never officially said when existing 4.1 devices would be brought up to 4.2 there isn't a delay. Something that's never been announced can't be delayed.
And as for the Note 8 getting it first, that makes total sense. It uses a phone vs. tablet UI similar to the N2 but sells in probably 1/10 the volume. If something's broken or needs trouble shooting in customer’s hands it's better to test it on a smaller audience. 4.2 hasn't been used with S Pen, S Note, or an inductive display before and doing so adds a lot of extra code. I'm fine with Note 8 users being the Guinea pigs because my N2 runs perfectly on 4.1.
But do continue to rant and run this thread up to dozens of pages like the other update threads. I'm sure it'll make the update come faster.
Owners of S3 and Note 2 can surely expect the Android 4.2.2 update, but it requires some patience as the maker struggles with Galaxy S4 sales and new Android versions.

And where would that be? HTC? One S owners would disagree the grass is greener. Motorola? Those that bought phones in late-2011 with the promise (in writing) from Motorola they'd receive it and then didn't don't think their grass is any greener. LG and Sony perhaps? There track records are worse than Samsung's.
Want instant updates? Buy a Nexus. Even the GE versions of the One and SGS4 are dependent on HTC and Samsung so won't get updates as fast as a Nexus. Buying a phone with an overlay (which everyone here did) means you wait for updates. If people didn't know that upfront it's their own fault.
And again, whining amongst yourselves here in three different threads on the same subject isn't going to make an update come any faster.

Hey, everyone here has a right to their opinion and feelings about updates. I mostly stay out of update threads. I pop up occasionally becaue people new to XDA or trying to see if a certain phone's worthwhile could get the wrong impression when people go off on Samsung about updates. In my opinion they're no worse than others and over this past year seem to be pushing more general updates out then they have been. But in truth they all pretty much suck and updates clearly aren't a priority. I'd expect starting with the X-Phone, now that Motorla's owned by Google, Motorola should probably lead the pack. We'll have to wait and see.
Maybe someone could explain to me if Samsung sucks so much w/ updates, which mythical company we're talking about that has started rolling out 4.2.2 for it's 2012 flagship? FFS One's just getting 4.2.2 and that came out with S4.
And once 4.2.2 is out more whining threads will be out re: battery life and downgrading to 4.1.2. I'm good with 4.1.2 custom ROMs, what exactly are people missing out on 4.2.2? Lockscreen widgets? Really? Is it worth all this persistent whining?

Shhh. They're all mostly 16yo and this is a big thing for them. Don't try to understand why.
Back when my S3 was on ICS and we were waiting for JB, I asked all the complainers what feature they were missing. One bloke said he was losing business because he didn't have Google Now! (He was serious too)
In a world where flashing a new ROM every second day makes sense, you HAVE to have the latest version of stuff. You just do. The End.
Oh yeah another bastard thread about people moaning because we don't have 4.2.2
Yes im going to shout
WHY ON EARTH WOULD THEY DROP THIS UPDATE BEFORE THE NOTE 3 IS RELEASED AND NOBODY KNOWS WHAT THE NOTE 3 WILL BE RUNNING.
Get it in your heads shut up and wait and stop clogging this forum up with crap every time a phone gets an update. Ffs

bad news indeed, but i'm good on 4.1.2
When (not if) we get the 4.2 update, I suggest eager fans divide it in half to get two updates --> 4.2 / 2 = 2.1
With those two 2.1 updates, use one right away, then save the second for when u feel the need for additional updates later.
Hit thanks if this sounds like a viable option

also, kit kat is a better name than key lime pie imo. i know they didn't really say much about this or its release date, but google, give us some time to bask in 4.3 goodness without having to say "i'm only going to have the newest version of android for 5 minutes"
one more thing: manufacturers, since you're lazy a-holes, skip any 4.3 updates unless you are actually competent enough to test and push the update. this will probably come out this fall (so in like a month or two)
this is android 4.4, not 5.0 like i thought. i am interested to see what this is going to be.
as most other android releases go, it probably will run on our fascinate. again, it's a wait and see thing.
THE LAST THING: This would be just fine if Google actually had control of the OS like Apple does. inb4 apple vs google, but you gotta admit, apple pushes out updates and all the devices that are listed to receive the updates get them. day one, no questions asked. with android, you don't get that unless you have a GSM Nexus phone, or a Nexus tablet.
Hope this will have some significant improvements to the fragmentation.
So what do you guys think Kitkat will bring to our phones? Its definitely not something huge because its not 5.0
Any thoughts? Oh and yes. Apple rules when it comes to updates. Thats one thing I'll like to se improved over the next few versions. And Samsung etc should join forces not wait months or years for updates! !!

vzw (best carrier ever for updates lol no and samsung didn't give us an official Gingerbread build until... December 1, 2011. Do you know what else was out on that date? it's a secret. guess. ice cream sandwich
yep. ics was already out and they gave us gingerbread. and what did samsung give all galaxy S owners for not giving them ICS. excuses! "the galaxy S doesn't have enough ram guize" my left foot. my fascinate runs jelly bean like a dream.
samsung is too full of themselves to join in on google goodness. look at the s3. that thing can totally run 4.2 or 4.3, but samsung doesn't give you those builds because they want money, not a long-lasting phone. that's the way of business. the sad way of business.

Yeah well never blame Devs from google. It's the carrier and device brand. I understand what you mean, but there are far too many devices to optimize for unlike apple.

it's not entirely functional yet, but it's here and it does run moderately well
I tested that rom yesterday. It's quite nice- most everything that I tried worked, excepting only data. Even the google experience launcher was there! Once I get 10 posts I can try to post logcats.

The 4.4.3 test

I have been using my PRO 12.2 for a couple of months and I am quite happy. Coming from a Google Nexus background (phone and 7" tablet) one of my main concerns with purchasing a Samsung product was it's poor history of providing software updates. I have owned Samsung tablets in the past and always felt stranded by the lack of updated versions of Android.
It will be interesting to see how fast it will take them to push out Android 4.4.3 OTA. 4.4.3 is a minor update so one would think that it would be fairly quick. I really hope Samsung passes the test. Let's see how serious they really are.
One of the major Samsung`s disadvantages is the poor support and updates for their whole products starting from smart phones to tablets.
For example Galaxy note 10.1 2014 edition was released in October 2014 with Jelly Bean 4.2 and just weeks ago Samsung started to roll out 4.3 for that great tablet. While they have released the Note Pro 12.2 with the kitkat 4.3 on January 2014...
"If you wanna the recent updates and software go and get their new product or you have to wait for a long time till you get the updates"
I think this is Samsung`s Policy.

Samsung does often appear to be neglecting devices when it comes to updates. Fact of the matter is, 99% of the time the cause is a significant problem in the software adaptation.
The Note 3 was the very first non-nexus device to get 4.4.2, so it's not always the case.
You can't measure the release by Nexus standards. The Nexus-release is a glorified beta-test.

I don`t think so...
Simply there are 2 devices with almost the same hardware specs (Note 10.1 and Note Pro) the first one (10.1) has recently started to get the 4.4.2 update while the Note Pro was released with the Kitkat 4.4.2 on January 2014.
Another example, the upcoming tablets 10.5 S/Note 4/ Tab 4/...etc will be released with the recent updates 4.4.3 which is still not available for any other Tab/Note/Smart Phone...
I think it is not the matter of software adaptation but the priority goes for the upcoming products not those already released....

OEMs can access Google's internal Android's sources before they're open-sourced. Nexus isn't a benchmark - it's a public release of already finished firmware, and patching up the final issues, OEM's updates should follow within one-two months, not 6+ months or more. Since Note 3 is still one of their top phablets with no successors, they had to update it quickly enough to make people stay on their devices - if you'd spend 650 pounds on a device and then wait 6 months (if you're lucky) to get an update, you'd probably be pissed off (and rightfully so). They abandon their low-end devices or older flagships quite quickly.
For example, Galaxy S2 (which I own) was updated to 4.1, but not any further, despite being perfectly capable of doing so. According to Samsung, it's because they ran out of memory with TouchWiz bloatware 99.9% folks never use features, despite the fact that S3 was updated to 4.3, and had 1GB RAM - just as S2 did, S2 /system was 512MB, /preload was another 512MB. S3's firmware was ~800MB. So, really, it's just them having crappy business practices.
Another example? Galaxy Mini 2. It's moderately popular in Poland - it's cheap and "just works", and was released with 2.3 - had a couple of point releases, but never got past Gingerbread. There are 4.x ROMs for this phone here, and they're fast and fine. Capable - just Samsung's not interested. Okay, they were - and eventually announced that no update will be released.
I'm honestly admiring Microsoft for their WP8.1 upgrade policy.
Been there, done that. . My experience with a Verizon galaxy tab 10.1 was enough to convince me not to buy another Verizon variant of a Samsung tablet. If samsung is slow at releasing updates it only gets worse on carrier versions. Look at AT&T... they put in their FCC application at around the same time as Verizon for the Note probut are only now announcing it. In a world where refreshed hardware is released yearly having a 4 month lag in release is a bit concerning.

That's a systemic Android issue. Apple puts out updates to their 7 year old devices, but Android devices are always abandoned in less than a year. Hopefully, we'll get better support for this device.
