[LG G Pad 8.3] Quick Teardown - G Pad 8.3 General

Hey guys,
I took a quick look inside the G Pad and want you to show how to open it and what it looks like there.
How to Open
What you need is a pry-tool, a small screw driver and some plectrums. Something to heat would be perfect as well.
First, you should remove the screw that is inside the microSD-slot:

}
Next, you take the pry tool and get the device out of the chassis. Apply the pry-tool to the gap between frame and screen. As soon as you lifted off one of the short sides a bit, you stick there one of the plectrums carefully. Then you go on with the other sides.
When all sides are lifted off the device from the frame, you still won't be able to get rid of the rear panel. Unfortunately there is glue in the middle between battery and case, so a bit of heat wouldn't be bad. I took a blow-dryer to avoid bad times with my battery
Internals
And here we are:
You can clearly see the adhesive pad in the middle.
The case:
At the top of the picture between the two speaker-holes there is the serial number label as it is on the bottom of our back side. Right, you can see a thermal foil for the powerful chips. On the left side there is a little blue box. It could probably be the vibration motor (thanks to Ardion)
Closer look to the controllers:
After taking of the heatsink we get a look at the controller-chips. On the left side there is a Qualcomm PM8921 who cares for the power-management. The middle chip is still covered, I will embrace it later. The last chip is our NAND flash, it's a Toshiba THGBM5G7A2JBAIR
The top side:
At the very high top of the picture there is the 3.5mm sound-connector. Below is our microSD-Slot.
The flat wire that is mounted by two screws is from our battery. I have even found a spare part, so it would be possible to replace the battery.
The connector at the bottom of the picture leads us to the next part:
Power button and volume rockers:
Between the two volume buttons there is even a label LGV500 on it. So it might be a V500 exclusive part
Blame my camera for the bad macro function..
You are the SoC, aren't you?
So there we have a Hynix memory with H9TKNNNBPDMA-ARNGM on it. I couldn't find any information about it, but it seems that there is our RAM combined with the Snapdragon 600?
Mainboard detached
There we have our two cameras. The left one as rear-facing and the right one front-facing.
Mainboard the other way round
Not much to see, but there is a black box at the right. There a two bulbs, one should be the brightness-sensor, but the other one?
Don't use the tab in the bathtub
The paper strip with crosses seems to be a indicator for the manufacturer. If you have a damage caused by water the crosses will disappear and LG won't be your friend any more. It is very clever placed at the SD-card-slot, where the water-cooling will first take effect
Sh1tty camera
There you have the rear-facing camera. I wasn't able to get it out of there, probably I have to dismount the board first..
Down left of the camera, there is our IR-blaster.
The Battery
There it is. 4.600 mAh
Worst speaker of the world
With my first G Pad I had trouble with one of the speakers. It sounded very muffled and vibrated a lot. The new one sounds better, but not more..
The whole speaker strip is attached by three screws. The one at the bottom right didn't want to go my way, so I had to stop disassembling
The bottom side
ATMEL controller in the middle. Could be the touchscreen-controller (thanks to Ardion)
USB connector
At the left side you can see the USB connector. At the right there seems to be the microphone. The two connectors between them are connected to the blue box that I have already mentioned.
Summing up, it's no easy job to get to the battery. There are a lot of flat wires that have first to be disconnected. A lot things have to be dismounted as well.
The mainboard on the other side is good accessible and can be replaced easily.
That's all, I hope you liked it.
Replacing the screen
Turn over to iruiz2's post to see additional pictures and get to know how to replace the screen:

I think the Atmel chip at the bottom is a touchscreen controller.
The little blue box looks like the vibration motor.

Great job! If you discover a replacement battery somewhere, please update with that information.

Good news!
I just searched again and actually I found one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bateria-Bat...101-BL-T10-4600mAh-New-ORIGINAL-/161171869316 :good::good:

It would be great if someone could make a battery replacement tutorial video. I mean when the time is right, I guess the batteries are too new to be replaced!

I will think about it. Cause it should be enough to detach the upper and lower wires. Though this is no easy intervention as there is a wire adhesived near the USB connector.

I added two pictures with the mainboard detached.
So that is a lot easier than the battery..

Perhaps there is enough space to adapt and inegrate a qi-receiver!

I don't think that this is a good idea. The metallic backside would shield the magnetic radiation and you wouldn't get any power

Interesting thread thanks! If I were to take my tab apart I would never be able to put it back together again in working order
Must require a great deal of skill & patience to do this.

Great job. I was wondering how to open up this baby. Now I know this has a one piece back plate.
How long did your blow dry it? Have you tried to remove the glue and see if it loose or make any squeaky noises?

You don't need much heat. I just used it about half a minute and then the glue loses his power. With constant force to the back plate you can feel how the glue-strip is slowly peeling away from the back plate.
I haven't tried to remove the glue, cause it is attached to the battery..

Thanks for the reply.
Do you have the service manual before doing this or just found it out after tinkering for a while?
If you have the service manual, can you share the link? It seems I couldn't find them (including the GPE pad v510)

No service manual. I tried it myself

What a great man! Thank you for bestowing a good knowledge upon mankind especially lg g pad user
It would be more awesome if you can record the process of disassembling the case apart.
This thread needs to be in a sticky.

I will think about it soon. First, I have to order a tripod for my cam

Really interesting, thanks! I love people who risk bricking their device for the good of the community :good:

think there's space to hide a full-size SD card with a (SD->microSD) adapter inside?

The only possible space would be between battery and back-cover. But I dunno whether 0.16 in are free there, it might be less.
I could measure it for you when I am shooting the video.

USB connector replacement?
Can anyone advise if it's possible to replace the USB connector?
I spilled a tiny amount of water my G Pad. I didn't think it got to the internals, but after charging it overnight the cable was stuck in the connector (like really stuck) and had obviously baked itself in.
I got it loose after spraying with isopropyl alcohol, and it somehow still charges, but the connection is bad and getting worse.
Any clues?

X2 Case cracking already!!!

After going through this with my X1 which I took very good care of, I was sure to be extra careful with the X2.
SE blamed HTC for the design flaw that lead to cracks in the X1, well SE... what do you say about the X2 then???
After picking up my phone yesterday I felt a sharper more jagged feel near my camera button. I did not pay attention to it at first, but I felt it again and took a closer look. This is what I found!

Here you can see the crack goes through to where the metal tab for the battery cover locks.
So the question remains, was I just unlucky? Anybody else notice cracking there in that spot? Looking at it closely I can tell you it's awfully thin and I can't see it holding up for very long.
The only thing I can say that I do differently from the average X2 owner is swap out my batteries every day. I have a standalone charger and 2 spare batteries since my X1 and I prefer to swap fresh batteries every morning instead of using USB to charge so that I don't prematurely wear out (or break) the USB jack, as was a problem with some X1s. Surely this can't cause abnormal case cracking can it???
****, i jsut looked and i have a crack too.. omg i have taken good care of this phone
mtechfan your not alone with the swapping of the battery's each day i did this with my C902. i dont have a crack by the cam button but i have just noticed that were the stylis slides in the little clip that helped lock it in place is no longer there
Well, we better all check our phones!
If we look at this from a design view... I think that the plastic bit that has the clip, that holds onto the battery cover is too thin.
I can imagine the other one on the top side failing just the same.
the back cover hinges near to that point, wouldnt be surprised if it puts extra stress on that side. i dnt think they designed it in mind with people swapping the battery every day.
had my X2 over 5months and touch wood not a crack or anything on it so far. i dont swap the battery though. my x1 had cracks, keyboard failures, peeling varnish from back cover and all manner of problems by 5months...
i was only inspecting my phone the other day and thinking to myself at how well the X2 has lasted compared to the X1. very pleased with the build quality so far.
i think we will have to recommend to everyone to avoid taking off the back cover more than they have too...

Well, that does not solve the problem. It is a ticking time bomb, who says it wont crack anyways? amdx2 does not mention swapping batteries.

The back side area only cracked for that person because of careless ness. When you putting on the battery cover on any phone and you dont take time to see what your doing thats what gonna happen. The X2 battery cover has to metal strips at the side to be placed on the grove of the phone< when you dont place it in the grove properly it will push out the side of the phone and may brake just like what you see in those pictures you see there. So we cant blame SE for our negligence

That is my phone and I KNOW HOW TO PUT THE DAMN BATTERY COVER ON! I take very good care of every device I have ever owned.
This cracked over time, it has nothing to do with me being careless. Your X2 will crack soon enough, then will you say you were careless?
It's a very thin piece of plastic, take a close look!
Ohh...
I just looked aswell, and found that crack too :S
And it is two crack in an early phase too on the other side of the phone...

Can you also take pictures of the cracks on your phone for comparison to the one I have?

how long have you had your X2?
* edit * to keep this thread constructive i think it would be helpful for people replying to this thread to specify how long theyve owned their X2, whether theyve spotted any cracks (and where) and whether they swap the batterys or remove the back cover on a regular basis.
that way it can be established if theres a particular batch of X2s that are flawed and if theres a main cause or if its just random.

Good idea, I got mine around the end of March. Not that long really, the phone looks brand new except for the crack. I use screen protectors as well.
thats not long at all then. so about 8 weeks...
ive had a close look at that side, with the cover on it seems strong enough. but with the cover off its not all that strong. looks like the back cover provides quite a lot of the overal phone strength. the cover has metal hinges too so if anything is going to give it will be the plastic on the casing. dont really see why they had to hinge it. theyve had to put two holes there to accomodate the hinge, if they had kept a normal slide in and click back cover they could of made the casing much more solid. i suppose they thought they where being clever by having a cover with a nice locking mechanism.
ive had mine since february and the guy who had it before me must of had it a few weeks. so mine is nearly 5 months old. but ive probably only taken the back cover off about a dozen times at the most.
i also notice that the crack is quite close to the camera button.. i wonder if using the camera a lot contributes to the crack forming. i dont take many pictures so rarely use the button. just done a few tests and if u press hard on the camera button you can see the case flex slightly..
well, i don't change battery but i need take out the battery less 4 or 5 times a week to restart the phone cuz it has crushed.. also i have drop the phone a few times already..
since MR2 my phone hasn't really crashed only need a soft reset from time to time.. which i think its normal since its WINMO afterall

Yes, I have used the camera quite a bit. That might be it!
Same here, just noticed the crack exactly at the same location ((
Hi every body
I had an X1 too, and same problems that everyone had before, case crack without ANY reason while taking care well, keyboard problems after about 8-9 months and color disappearing of back.
As everyone knows SE said that HTC is responsible for problems of x1.
After all waiting for next work of SE, we have a very close arrival of x2 and x10, so I got an x2 because I BELEIVED that SE presented x2 with all experiences and failures of x1, considering that anyone in the world knew that x10 has a excellent build quality, .... and also some known lacks.
NOW I AM DISAPPOINTED AND MAD AT SE> SHAME ON SE because of having customers like us disappointed.
I had ericsson phones since T26, T28, ......, p800,910,990, x1 and now x2
The least they can do is a simple apology

thanks mtechfan for the post.
I checked my phone...so far no cracks. and I dropped it and took the battery out, god knows how many times already
Ah, gonna keep my fingers crossed
This might not be highly relevant, but I have a very similar crack in my X1 (same place). It started as a tiny triangular chip along that plastic ridge/bumper. I remove the battery a decent amount due to flashing. I have also had about 2 bad drops.
Wonder if that plastic stuff some people cover their whole phones with would help avoid this.

HD2 Powermat finally!

Hi guys,
Just incase you havent heard.
Powermat support the HD2 now.
http://www.powermat.com/us/receivers/htc/receiver-door-for-htc-hd2.html
Bad news is that its sold out!
you can but the bundle for $59.99 which included the battery door and a powermat
that is not bad at all considering with the tp2 you had to add this bulky backpiece. Might be a good x-mas investment seeing how we have 3 hd2's laying around.
Hi,
Does anyone know if its work with a cover , you know, I mean a hard cover for HD2 ? No interference ?
I just don't get why ppl like this kind of stuff. Don't we get enough RF/EM around us already ? Why add some more, needlessly ?

kind of like booting android on a winmo phone?
what's gimmicky about it? Being able to charge up to 3 hd2's through 1 plug means less cords on my desk which will make my wife very happy. I have the energizer mat for the wii remotes and it's easy to throw them on the mat after playing to have them recharge.

But, actually, my post wasn't a joke. Those things work like a transformer, the mat got the primary winding, the phone part got the secondary one. Even if nothing is charging, it's just a damn coil plugged into the wall, 'transmitting' the mains frequency into the air, pointlessly. Maybe it is completely harmless, but maybe it isn't. And since i usually charge my phone at night, and keep it nearby, this would mean putting this stupid field emitter just next to my head, just for the sake of not plugging a connector in ? Sorry, but no thanks.

um, you do know that the way these pads work is thru electro-magnetic induction right? basically a oscillating magnet (a magnet that moves or "vibrates") in the pad produces a electric charge in a wire in the cover that coverts the magnetc field into a charge... from my understanding its the oscillation rate that prevents it from affecting anything else but the wire in the cover.. if your afraid of this you might as well be afraid of refrigerator magnets too.. or hell, any electro-magnetic device.. the speaker in the phone, the alternator in your car, your fan...
You have a strange way of representing it (an oscillating magnet ? well, fair enough, an oscillating magnet would certainly create a similar magnetic field).
You are actually correct here, I would NOT want to have an electric motor, a big transformer, alternator, or anything similarly powerful, that emits strong magnetic fields, at about a meter from my head, for an extended period of time, and thats exactly where my phone usually is at nights. Nor i would like a strong DC magnet right next to me all the time. Would you like to be in an MRI room, needlessly ? And, btw, the fact the 'receiver' is tuned to the transmitter frequency doesn't prevent the transmitter from affecting everything else around. Wanna see for yourself ? Try dropping a small metal object on that mat, it should start buzzing on it like crazy, lol. And if it doesn't, the thing probably operates on RF frequencies, that's even worse
PS: The phone speaker and fridge magnets are off the list here for obvious reason, having a very 'low power' fields.
Looking at PowerMat's FAQs, looks like it won't work if you have it in a case. Too bad. Wish it'd work with my otterbox.
Check out the review of the powermat cover for a BlackBerry. Shows it works with a silicon cover

Got mine from Walmart - $49.97. Kinda touchy about where you place your HD2 on the mat. Plus I can't use my clear case with it because the door is too bubbled out. The good thing is, I can still use velcro on the door. It will make sufficient connection through the velcro.

I could be wrong, but I doubt that it would work through the rubber and plastic of the OtterBoxes.
I wish they had some type of conductive filament that you could put on the inside and outside of the case.

It's transmitting only a magnetic field. Are you really worried about that?
Reminds me of the NIMBYs who cried about having power cables nearby, then I see 'health magnets' advertised in magazines
What about the phone signal?
And WiFi? TV and Radio transmitters? EMF from power cables? There are many things throwing radio/light/radiation signals at us all day.
EDIT: I just saw your more recent post. Electromagneteic Conduction is the technology used, as stated by the company themselves

Looks fairly good overall....
...but the description describes it as having "snap shut closure..."
Looks like a band of elastic that wraps around it to keep it shut...
If this had magnets, or real snaps or...something else, it might be a contender...I'm not a fan of elastic...wears out way too fast.

I think what you are seeing as "elastic bands" are the grooves in the case for the edge of the tablet to set in.
I will be very eager to hear from someone who gets this case to find out:
1. How it"snaps shut"?
2. If the flap opens all the way to the back?
3. How well the tablet stays in the case?

I am purchasing this within next week. Seller gave me the link for his store.
http://www.fintie.com/
IMHO, it looks like one of the best cases out there.
Per the description from the store link above,
5.Elastic band holds iPad 2 closed securely while on the go
maybe it does use elastic bands, but since it also says "iPad 2" I'll be curious to see how it actually works.
Elastic closure...
Having gone to where the original object was posted and downloaded the picture, I saw a swelling on the "upper corner" of the cover that could really only be a couple of things...
Given the lack of anything else that might be considered a candidate for some sort of closure, I figured it to be elastic...
Looking forward to seeing the confirmation in other people's pictures...I still may get it and modify it to my liking. Seems like the closest yet. I do wish it had some other type of closure...
P.S. I love the simplicity of the TPU "snapon" case I have now - seems to offer more corner / edge protection should I mishandle it.
I may buy another TPU case and add / modify it with portions of this case. now THAT would be cool...
I'm thinking that "snap shut" could means like one of those jean button...

( then dock it through a circle ring ( case snap on to base ) to become desktop with angles and 360 rotation positions )
Top half of the circle above Acer logo is part of tablet case while the bottom half is use as the backstand. ( it is bendable at that part/or separate.... see the joint lines in pic #1 )
the Jeans snap shut button could either be on the top half or the lower half circle... served the same purpose.
Together, they combined to becomes a portfolio case

I preferred that it is bendable instead of separate and snap on button on the top half of the ring.
top candidate for me and also because cannot get the Blurex case from Amazon to Canada.

Found this while searching for Iconia cases
The part in the back looks to be high quality and it clipped on to the body just like the Blurex case but also offered 360° Rotating

What's so strange about describing a gadget or item that is capable of "360° Rotation" ???
besides... that's what the ad said !!
maybe some people just run out of things to complain about, so they have to pick on a word ??
I'm looking forward to reading the user reviews of this case.

Same here, but I have the blurex slim case now and love it, and but this case looks nice
Sent from my A500 using XDA Premium App
I received mine today, which I ordered last week from fintie.com. It looks exactly like the pictures on ebay or the fintie.com so I am not going to post any pictures. I also have a blurex slim case (same thing with roocase slim) and quality wise it is not as good as blurex, and it has one less indentation thingies in the case that serve as a stopper for different angels, but it stays fine even if you don put the table directly into those indentations.
Build quality is ok, not great but ok. Unfortunately just like in the pictures it has an elastic strap as a closure instead of a magnetic flap or a hard leather part like in blurex case. I am not sure if it wears out or becomes lose quickly, only the time will tell.
Swivel mechanism works fine, and it is a lot easier to remove the tablet from the case, if you are doing that constantly. The part that your tablet sits in is plastic, the rest is fake leather. It is slightly thinner than the blurex slim case, mainly due to less padding on the flap.
Removing the plastic case from the swivel mechanism and flap is NOT easy at all, and would probably break the notches on the swivel eventually.
Both sides are open like the blurex case, so this is not designed to protect your tablet if you drop it sideways, but more for to protect it from daily wear and tear and carrying in a bag, etc.
All in all I am happy with it and would buy it again, since I really wanted something that swivels for reading comics in portrait mode.
Thanks man, this seems like a nice case then. I will order mine within this week, although it will probably reach my hands one month after I do the purchase (I live in Mexico and our Postal Service is really crappy).
Looking forward to pictures as well, was wanting a case like this since I read mangas and also browse ebay in portiat mode.
I just Googled "iconia a500 rotating case" and found another vendor for this item and bought it for about $19 total. (Same item but $10 cheaper than the two vendors on Amazon; in fact this vendor is through amazonwebstore.) I'll try to remember to post back here after I get to play with it for a couple of days.
I received the case yesterday, so shipment from the vendor I used was quick enough for me. The case looks just as it does in pictures posted in this thread already, so I won't add more.
The thickness of the case material seems like it will protect the tablet very well from abrasion damage. As for impact damage, dropping small/light things onto the case shouldn't damage the tablet inside--or even dropping the tablet itself onto a hard floor unless the tablet lands right on a corner as the sides are exposed. (Even then, the case will protect it a little bit as it does extend over the edges of the Iconia a little.)
When the case is open, access is unobstructed to all buttons and ports except, of course, the docking port. When the case is closed, the elastic band covers the camera and the headphone port. I can't imagine anyone trying to take pictures with the Iconia closed in the case, but blockage of the headphone port could be a problem for people who want to close the case securely with the elastic band and listen to music through wired headphones at the same time.
There are two preset angles in this case. Using the trusty eyeballing method, one is 50 deg and the other is 65 deg. There is enough friction to set the tablet at any angle between there and not much give to set beyond.
The rotation works as advertised and is the reason why I got this particular case. I spent $19 on it and feel it's a good value. If you find a deal on this case for $10-$15, then you shouldn't even hesitate.

S Pen accuracy off when writing around the edge.

So, while I was taking notes in class using S Note, I noticed that couldn't really write the letter "y" when typing on the right side of the page. After messing around a little bit in that area, I realized that the pen marks were just below and to the left of where I was writing (In between the bezel and where the lines end, and a few centimeters above the location of the light sensor when it's on the right side of the tablet). I'm going to test it again later today.
Has anybody else encountered this issue?
So after fiddling around a little more, I realized that it applies to the aforementioned area (on both sides) for the full length of the screen (from top to bottom when holding the tablet in portrait). It's odd that it would be the same on both sides of the screen the same distance from the bezel. I'm going to make my way to best buy to try the demo unit for similar issues.
That's just the nature of the technology. Behavior is consistent across multiple devices. Touch input is also offset towards the edge for the top and bottom edges in landscape. Not a big deal.

Funny. I don't seem to have that problem.

This is likely the LCD metal frame and surrounding electronics distorting the Wacom radio field...
Distortion is visible if you use a ruler to draw straight lines, as in this image:

Intuos and other Wacom tablets have a wide border around them to prevent this distortion.
It would be nice if Wacom had a fine-tuned adjustment for these ranges.

Turn on 'Show touches' in developer options settings, touch and hold down screen, follow your finger and the dot towards the top or bottom edge in landscape and as you approach approximately 1/2" towards the edge the dot will pull away. Doesn't seem to appy to left and right edges in landscape. Anyhow, not a big deal but good to be aware for the rare instances that you have controls like sliders that close to the edge.
As those who replied have mentioned, I was able to reproduce the issue on the Best Buy demo unit. Thanks for the input everyone, and thanks for the picture AbeOwitz.

Interesting... Please try the other sides.
I am getting only a slight distortion when the pen is really close to the front camera. But even then it is not even near to the distortion in the picture earlier in this thread.
The rest of the screen i'm not getting any distortion.
I'll upload a screenshot in a bit

I tried it all over the screen now.
I don't get the problem on the edges except from the top left and bottom right. Not a big deal. The worst is that there is a little spot in the middle, about 2 cm from the bottom and about a 1 cm to the left.
I guess it's magnetic interference from the components in the tablet.
Sent from my GT-N8000 using xda app-developers app
I noticed this issue when I used a folio case that had magnets. It got so pronounced that there would be a small circle of area (right below the front camera) that couldn't detect any pen input (contact with hands gets registered fine). And yes, jagged lines around there and directly at the opposite side near the Samsung logo.
I got really worried and stopped using the case. The problem ceased. I'm wondering if using such magnetic cases will damage the tablet in the long run. Any thoughts?
One X to rule them all
I'm no electrical engineer but i don't like magnets near any electronic devices especially when any type of memory storage is involved, but i tend to err on the side of caution. I'm sure there are some folks with greater knowledge about electromagnetism than i in here, but with all the sensors and stuff crammed in there who knows what's going on
Here is mine
i am too
in near of left and right edge side .when use s note to test (and other app) .drag the note area to the side and try to dot with s pen .the dot will not correct point with the pen. the area of this problem is about 1-2 squrebox in s note background.
And i have some problem (maybe not - -) .when i use the Smart lock App to lock file in microsd card (sandisk 32GB ultra class10). it very slow to prepare to lock process.but in the main memory of note10.1 at the same file it normaly .I use this microsd card in galaxy s2 before but it normaly. It can lock and unlock very fast but when use in note10.1 it use long time to lock or unlock..i try to use Hide it pro app(audio manager) to test.and it have the problem same Smart lock.
Have any one got the same problem? Thank you ^^
I'm actually scared of the "magnetic closure" thing. Since I've bought the Note when it was first available, I just jumped and bought one of the cases available -at the time, there was only one. However, whenever I use the S-pen with the case on, the accuracy on the edges gets off by millimeters. I just hope that it will not cause any permanent damages, as it works a lot better on the edges without the case -apart from the bottom, it's as problematic.
Anyone know anything about the permanent damage issue? I will not have the opportunity to buy another case for like a month or two, so I want to use mine in the meantime, and replace with a new one as soon as possible afterwards. :fingers-crossed:

Exactly! I'm really concerned about possible long term damages too. My gut says there is a high chance. But the original Samsung book cover has magnets on its back too. Wouldn't they have realised the issue?
the whole GALAXY to NOTE about...counting down from 10 to 1.
Hello guys
I bought the note 10.1 recently and I'm very happy with it. Unfortunately I noticed after one week the same problem. I'm not sure if it got worst but *
it appears not only at the edges but also at some other spots. It get worst with low pressure and slow motion. With this imprecision it's not possible to draw ot do some exact sketches. Does sb have the same problem and is this normal or should I let it repair or ask for a new one?
Greetings gambade
There is a pic
It seems to be a huge problem in Lecture Notes app.
I'm planning to buy for my education, too. Have you fixed that problem guys? Is it a big deal?

[GUIDE] [INSANE HARD MOD] Improve Nexus 7 ( 2013 ) cooling and overclocking potential

Warning: This MOD will void your warranty. You will have to open the device and leave traces behind by performing it. Only perform this Mod if you´re willing to take a risk.
While you´re at it, you might consider having a look at this too
Since the Nexus 7 ( 2013 ) is quite old now and many people will be out of warranty soon ( or are already ), this MOD won´t hurt you much but it will prevent your fingers from burning when the device heatens up after a while.
Improving the cooling of the SoC will reduce thermal throttling intervals and also enhance overclocking potential while still keeping your fingers cool.
Material needed:
- some thermal paste
- some piece of metal ( Aluminum or Copper of about 0.5mm thickness ) ( worst case you could use Aluminum Foil and fold it many times in order to build yourself the needed spacer )
- rubbing alcohol
- a thermal pad of about 0.5mm thickness ( optional , if you prefer to use one of these, you can skip the piece of metal and the thermal paste )
- some sanding paper ( optional, only needed if your piece of metal has many scratches and you need to smooth the surface )
You need to open your device and to make sure that you lay down your display on a soft surface in order to prevent it from being scratched.
This is the area we are interested in:
Now you need to carefully remove the copper foil without destroying it since you will need to reattach it later ( it serves as a EMI shield too ).
Once removed, you will see 3x closed containers, we´re only interested in the middle one since there is the SoC we want to cool. Use gentle force and use eg. a screwdriver in order to remove the lid, make sure not to bend it. You will need to reattach the lid again since this one also serves as a EMI shield. Be patient while trying to remove the lid and make sure not to damage the PCB.
Once you have removed it, we can see the SoC and the 2x RAM modules ( 2x are on the back of the PCB ).
Since I forgot to make some pictures, I had to borrow one from ifixit in order to show you how it will look like The SoC is marked red.
Now you need to either a) attach a thermal pad on the SoC and carefully attach the lid back or in case you don´t have one, b) use the other ingredients mentioned..
Attach a thin layer of thermal paste on the SoC ( I used Arctic Silver 5 but any similar paste will do the job equal ).
Cut a small piece of metal ( about 16mm x 16mm x0.5mm will be enough but it would be ok to cover the SoC completely ), make sure to clean it with rubbing alcohol and carefully put it on the SoC.
Hold it in place, attach another thin layer of thermal paste on your piece of metal and make sure to put the lid back on. It´s ok if it bulges a little, just make sure you don´t use too much pressure.
The result:
While the SoC was designed to be used without a heatsink, it can use the EMI shield now as a heatsink :good:
Now all you need to do is to carefully attach the copper foil again, make sure that your Touchscreen Connector is still in place and put the back on.
You can use Antutu to perform a stress test now and check your temperature. The device won´t run as hot as before while remaining stable, even if you overclock the SoC.
I´m really happy with this MOD and I use it for a while now without any negative experiences The temperature increase remains constant and the back of the device as well as the touchscreen don´t feel as hot anymore.
Feel free to tell me your experiences
Advanced MOD : give the RAM and the NAND storage some love too
As you can see, I´ve also attached some coolers on the RAM
Material needed :
- a sharp knife ( you´re right, I mean it )
- rubbing alcohol
- cue tips or toilet paper or whatever you find
- screwdrivers
Basically you need to make some extra spacers out of scrap material, I used eg. this junk :
Now comes the tricky part, you need to remove all the small screws which hold the mainboard in place, carefully disconnect the Touchscreen connector, Speaker connector and the side buttons.
You see the ugly sticker on the display metal ? Guess what, now we need the knife but we only have to remove a part of it because it needs to maintain a electrical connection. Don´t forget to carefully remove the sticker from the NAND storage too. Did I mention that handling these things require you to be extra careful ?
This can look like this:
I went through the trouble of removing the glue with alcohol.
Now you need to proceed like you know and the result can look like this:
Carefully attach the mainboard and make sure not to use too much force when you tighten the screws.
Make sure that all connectors etc. are set in place now, close the back and enjoy
Here is a Screenshot after having performed the Antutu Stability Test:
The back of the device feels warm but not hot at all and also the screen has a mild temperature too.
I´ve overclocked the CPU @ 2Ghz and the GPU @ 477 Mhz
@Gorgtech thank you for your great tutorial! I just did it myself and indeed the screen temperature in games and benchsmarks feels alot cooler . I managed to do some camera shots. I will upload the next day if someone is interrest.
You´re welcome, I´m glad you could improve your device too
Here are the pics that i promise [emoji14]. You can see my piece oft metal are about 14mm x 14mm x0,5mm big. Should be okay?

Yes, it´s ok The size of the metal has to be big enough to partially cover the SoC and to connect it with the lid The piece I used is similar in size, slightly smaller than the SoC itself
@Gorgtech I see thank you for your help . I attach an antutu stabilty test with stock 5.1.1, is the temperature graph alright? I always use glitch kernel with OC so i have wait for his update.
The values are great, mine are worse because I´ve overclocked the CPU and GPU But still, the temps are quite low for such a device now
I use ElementalX without any undervolting. I use the Stock 5.1.1 Kernel at the moment too
I think I´m crazy I opened the device again and made some extra coolers for the RAM ( 4x ) and 1 for the NAND storage ( Uh Oh, risky risky ).
This time I made some pictures but the effort in order to add the extra cooling to the other components requires some extra work and patience.
Now all I need to do is to perform some tests and to check if the temps can improve further but I guess there is barely anything left to Mod in this device.
I can post the pictures if there is any demand for them
@Gorgtech Nice, please post the pictures you made .

Did you manage to get the tablet cooler with advance mode ?
I´m not sure if the extra effort is really worth it because the difference might be 1-3° at best in total. But on the other hand, cooler RAM and NAND might live a longer life
The only thing I noticed is that the device feels in total a lot better and even these "micro stutters" other guys have noticed when trying to scroll through huge pages, seem to have vanished or are at least barely noticeable ?
Maybe this is Placebo but in total it feels like I have a faster device since at least the throttling intervals have improved
Sounds good! I will be cover the rams too tonight. I remember the day back when i do your mod i thought why not cover the rams too, like a gpu xD.
Did anyone else perform the MODs or are you guys too lazy to stop playing Angry Birds for a few minutes ? Or did you perform these Mods and bricked your device ?
My device is still working fine, stable as a rock and barely warm, even after excessive use
@Gorgtech How is your device running after couple of weaks
My device is still running like a champ, the temps are stable and still no heating issue, even after a long usage
That's nice . Finally with glitch r343, antutu stability test.
Awesome temperature Does the device remain cool too ?
Yeah a bit cooler, GPU @600mhz is producing a lot of heat. It's better with the mod [emoji14]
