Hi guys,
I've just now received my Galaxy S4 with Exynos-Octa processor, and from the first minute I noticed overheating specially in the ear area and it's annoying, is anyone faced the same problem?
Thanks a lot
this Is what I was afraid of. On what usage does it over heats?

Just when you turn the screen on and start navigating in apps or even settings, but now after around 1.5 hours of using the heat became much lower! I hope it's a software problem and to be solved soon.
Same issue on Galaxy S3
Perhaps it's because of the location of the SOC, Radio and the battery which all adds up to the heat. Better use with a case.
Just got my phone too there is definite overheating. Just been setting things up and can feel it.

The problem is the heat is from the screen side, sometimes I can't talk with it! hope it's a software problem and to be solved soon
I'm having the same heating issue, but I've noticed that I have the famous 'mediaserver battery drain' issue too. Check under "Settings -> More -> Battery" and see if "Mediaserver" is at the top of the list, and if so, what percentage? Mine is sitting at 55%.
I'm down to 31% battery life after 2hrs 43mins of use
I suspect the overheating is a sympton of this misbehaving mediaserver, but I could be wrong
I dont think mediaserver will be the cause of the heat. Probably those processors will be. I think someone had a fix for the media server issue in the N7 forum. The heat will affect the battery life though.
When I bought the S2 back in 2011 it had the same problem. I've tried numerous ROM's and some were better than others at minimizing the back overheating but none of them completely cured it. Of course each time the phone overheated, the battery took a big hit
I then bought the Note 2 in September last year and Wow! I was impressed...faster CPU yet absolutely no overheating. I thought Samsung has finally solved this issue
Today I bought the S4 and sold the Note 2. What a big mistake! It overheats in almost any application, camera being the worst.
My wife was questioning about the heating as well. Shes like "feel this! Its warm. " her iphone never heated lol
Sent from my Note 2 hehehe
I am having the same problem!! Got my S4 just few hours back.. Even while watching videos it heats up!!!!

Very dissapointing news...
Just sold my Galaxy Note, and now i don't have any phone...
I was hoping that Galaxy S4 will be the best option for me. (
- HTC One is a useless brick, not an attractive alternative
- GT-9505 has a low efficiency (battery life will be a shame)
- Note II is not an option for me
- What else? What should i choice?

How do you know the 9505 battery sucks? From the reviews it's more than decent

I've just ordered one to shipping out with fedex. I guess we will just have to wait and see. Maybe its a software issue or some units have bad processors or heat sinks in them so they over heat. Hope mine is ok

Because the Exynos (big.LITTLE, architecture) version should be more battery friendly than the Qualcomm version, and if the Exynos fails, than imagine the Qualcomm version.
I just can't imagine that Samsung haven't tested both versions before starting to sell them worldwide...
BIG SHAME SAMSUNG!
I noticed mine to is getting a little to warm. Reminds of the s2 when I first bought it, and it had horrible battery life..

I'm sure its related to "Mediaserver" misbehaving

That's not a reason you should wait for the owners reviews before judging. Anyway if this is indeed the case of all the octa phones then I'm cancelling mine and will wait for something else. My s3 and note 2 are running great

Exactly my thoughts. People please check your battery stats and look for media and media server stats
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
The media server issue is normally down to a corrupt file on the phone or SD card.
Try removing the SD card and see if the problem stops. If it does then its a file on the SD card.
If it doesn't then its a file on the phone but this sounds odd as the phones are so new they shouldn't have lots of files on. On my s2 it was cached images from an app that did it, I just deleted them all.

I have used the phone for 2 days and it just seems more laggy than the note 2. The note 2 is crispy especially when switching between apps.

Yes. I have noticed this as well. Last weekend I purchased a HTC One, the reception was very poor compared to the Note 2, also seemed to have a bit of lag. I took it back immediately.
Then, I outright bought the Galaxy S4 and am debating taking it back because of the lag. I wonder if it has something to do with 1080 vs 720 screen resolution processing?

My best guess the is the s4 software was a rush job. They didn't expect to have to use the snapdragon 600 processor and so they didn't have time to fully optomize it the best they could. The soc is more than powerful enough. However, i think with in the the next month or so an update will completely clear that up. The same thing happened to the s3.

That is true, with an update it will help regulate the system a little better. I do too remember that with the SIII i didnt have it then but i knew a few people who did have it. The lag isnt BAD but i think to much runs in the background and sucks the ram up I feel as if i need a task killer for some of the background crap. Plus with the awesome dev selection coming here and once tweaks start cracking out im sure it will be all gone
What I did was install trickstermod, change the governor from on demand to interactive, up the read ahead from 256 to 1024, change scheduler to deadline, and turn off zram.. and this thing is running like butter. And I'm getting amazing battery life

I see two settings for the CPU Governor... You just changed the one under the General section correct. Or did you also change the Governor setting under the Specific sections as well?
EDIT: NVM the one under Specific section is for the GPU... misread it the first time I looked at the settings.
This seems odd to me. I had an S3 tweaked to optimal performance, and the S4 completely stock still blazes in comparison.
I don't have a single sliver of lag, I go from app to app in a heartbeat, and my roommate has a Note 2 as well and the S4 is still smoother.
Very weird, this is one beast of a phone haha. There is literally nothing better at the moment since it came out so early in the year!
I'm sure any issues you have will disappear in a second once kernel development gets going!

What do you consider to be "lag"? The S4 does lag. That's all there is to it. Not as much as my EVO LTE does but it still does. Especially compared to the HTC One. But I'd rather have a little lag as opposed to the negatives with HTC, Sense, and the One.

I'm sure you know all about my phone.
My phone doesn't stutter in the slightest, it does not ever freeze up even for a second, everything opens and close immediately, multi tasking works flawlessly, there is literally nothing on it that doesn't work flawlessly. It has a processor that's already excessively powerful for just a phone.
As other people have said, some people may be having lag solely due to software, and the consensus is that the latest firmware updates took care of the minor issues people were having. I've had an android phone from every generation starting with the G1 and I can say that my phone, the one in my hand, does not lag at all, while all others had plenty of lag decreasing exponentially through generations.
I am running AOSP though, and not the stock TW though and have been since it came out, so I can't give a respectable opinion on the current state of the stock rom.

The S4 is a better investment. HTC is on the brink of going out of business. The S4 will receive constant updates for the next 2 years where that's always been a challenge with HTC phones.

I've noticed this in every version of the s4 using a snapdragon 600 I've seen. Some will come out of the box fine others tend to lag. To the op I'd give the one another shot. I think your the only person whose had lag issues, so you probably got a dud unit.

Weird. I noticed lag on the display model at Sprint, on my brothers S4 right after he purchased his, and on mine right after purchasing my S4. My brother also claims his device doesn't lag the slightest bit but it clearly did while I was testing his out. Maybe some of us are super-human and can detect a higher FPS in the 'ol noggin. Lol. Who knows.

Hi all
I noticed I had an update last night so updated via samsung kies
but I do not see any changes on my samsung galaxy s4
can anybody shed some light in any changes.
the only change I see is the about device icon as changed
thank you
Major speed improvements and overall smoothness throughout the whole OS. The camera app opens up faster now especially in third party apps. No purple hue when scrolling. Little to no redraw of the home screen. Overheating has decreased significantly. Here is the best part battery life has improved greatly. Took the device of the charger at 8am and 12am the next day still had 50% battery life. I was shocked lol.

I was the owner of Note2 before. And now Note3.
Is it just me or anyone of you agree that the batt drain faster than Note2.
I test it with stock unrooted, no additional program installed, same 4.3 stock Sammy.
The N2 is using 4.3 leak but the batt can last for 1.5day with moderate usage.
But N3 can barely sustain a half day for light usage.
Both WiFi on, both no apps installed, no root.
Anyone notice similar?
It has been reported that the gnote2 has better battery life. Still rocking mine.

Now rooted and also underclocking to 1.5Ghz max.... Still batt is crazy....
Also if BBM is active, its hogging up resource....
What's your model number?
I wonder is the snapdragon version have better batt than exynos...
D**n internet.... made double post....
Strange. In my case its 20% better. Try to lower the brightness and turnoff all animations.

Having owned a note 2 and now a note 3 I must say the note 2 has a better batterylife imo. Both rooted and undervolted. Pretty much the same apps as well such as greenify etc. It ain't a very big difference tho, in my case.

Hi
one of the bad things so far about Galaxy devices is RAM usage and ability to free memory.
But stock Android 4.4.2 comes with RAM management feature;
Project Svelte
and also with power management for sensors that is so necessary for galaxy device;
Low Power Sensors
Now its important that how Samsung Galaxy Developers used these 2 project to boost up their product & of course Galaxy Note3
please write about your galaxy kitkat experiences...

I got Antutu 36512 fully stock 4.3, so it seems kitkat not much better and I'm sure I could push it much higher with tweaks not available yet for new 4.42.
So far initial tests and reports;
Boost Performance
better RAM management
more Stability
for SM-N900 and before it for N9005
