My Galaxy S4 GT-I9500 Overheating - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I've just now received my Galaxy S4 with Exynos-Octa processor, and from the first minute I noticed overheating specially in the ear area and it's annoying, is anyone faced the same problem?
Thanks a lot

this Is what I was afraid of. On what usage does it over heats?

Just when you turn the screen on and start navigating in apps or even settings, but now after around 1.5 hours of using the heat became much lower! I hope it's a software problem and to be solved soon.

Same issue on Galaxy S3
Perhaps it's because of the location of the SOC, Radio and the battery which all adds up to the heat. Better use with a case.

Just got my phone too there is definite overheating. Just been setting things up and can feel it.

The problem is the heat is from the screen side, sometimes I can't talk with it! hope it's a software problem and to be solved soon

I'm having the same heating issue, but I've noticed that I have the famous 'mediaserver battery drain' issue too. Check under "Settings -> More -> Battery" and see if "Mediaserver" is at the top of the list, and if so, what percentage? Mine is sitting at 55%.
I'm down to 31% battery life after 2hrs 43mins of use
I suspect the overheating is a sympton of this misbehaving mediaserver, but I could be wrong

I dont think mediaserver will be the cause of the heat. Probably those processors will be. I think someone had a fix for the media server issue in the N7 forum. The heat will affect the battery life though.

When I bought the S2 back in 2011 it had the same problem. I've tried numerous ROM's and some were better than others at minimizing the back overheating but none of them completely cured it. Of course each time the phone overheated, the battery took a big hit
I then bought the Note 2 in September last year and Wow! I was impressed...faster CPU yet absolutely no overheating. I thought Samsung has finally solved this issue
Today I bought the S4 and sold the Note 2. What a big mistake! It overheats in almost any application, camera being the worst.

My wife was questioning about the heating as well. Shes like "feel this! Its warm. " her iphone never heated lol
Sent from my Note 2 hehehe

I am having the same problem!! Got my S4 just few hours back.. Even while watching videos it heats up!!!!

Very dissapointing news...
Just sold my Galaxy Note, and now i don't have any phone...
I was hoping that Galaxy S4 will be the best option for me. (
- HTC One is a useless brick, not an attractive alternative
- GT-9505 has a low efficiency (battery life will be a shame)
- Note II is not an option for me
- What else? What should i choice?

How do you know the 9505 battery sucks? From the reviews it's more than decent

I've just ordered one to shipping out with fedex. I guess we will just have to wait and see. Maybe its a software issue or some units have bad processors or heat sinks in them so they over heat. Hope mine is ok

Because the Exynos (big.LITTLE, architecture) version should be more battery friendly than the Qualcomm version, and if the Exynos fails, than imagine the Qualcomm version.
I just can't imagine that Samsung haven't tested both versions before starting to sell them worldwide...
BIG SHAME SAMSUNG!

I noticed mine to is getting a little to warm. Reminds of the s2 when I first bought it, and it had horrible battery life..

I'm sure its related to "Mediaserver" misbehaving

That's not a reason you should wait for the owners reviews before judging. Anyway if this is indeed the case of all the octa phones then I'm cancelling mine and will wait for something else. My s3 and note 2 are running great

Exactly my thoughts. People please check your battery stats and look for media and media server stats
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium

The media server issue is normally down to a corrupt file on the phone or SD card.
Try removing the SD card and see if the problem stops. If it does then its a file on the SD card.
If it doesn't then its a file on the phone but this sounds odd as the phones are so new they shouldn't have lots of files on. On my s2 it was cached images from an app that did it, I just deleted them all.

Blame it on the Snapdragon 600 or the Cortex-A15 cores, whichever you use. These babies burn like hell when you push them to the max. I suggest you to quickly root your phone and downclock via SetCPU . My SD600 is butter-smooth still at 1.35GHz and runs much cooler.
Of course any powerful processor on this earth will get hot when you use it fully. You can't put HSF in there

No offense but news flash the energy in the battery is converted into heat when you use the phone.
I feel like many people complaining about heating or overheating have units that are working correctly. It's a quad core with a big battery it's gonna make some heat when you put it to work.
Overheating specifically means heating to point where it no longer functions, not the point where you simply believe it is too hot (assuming it's not burning you) or even worse you think some temp readout is too high.
Tl;dr if your phone isn't shutting down or burning you it doesn't have a heating problem. If it's warm at idle your battery is draining you have a software idle drain problem not a heating problem.
Charging also generates heat. My phone will get pretty warm gaming but only really gets heated up on the back when charging. It's all fine. My S1 got toasty and never failed, one time I left it in a hot car it was so hot I could barely touch it and it was still working fine. Just chill.

Is it me or is the s4 laggy compared to the note 2

I have used the phone for 2 days and it just seems more laggy than the note 2. The note 2 is crispy especially when switching between apps.

Yes. I have noticed this as well. Last weekend I purchased a HTC One, the reception was very poor compared to the Note 2, also seemed to have a bit of lag. I took it back immediately.
Then, I outright bought the Galaxy S4 and am debating taking it back because of the lag. I wonder if it has something to do with 1080 vs 720 screen resolution processing?

My best guess the is the s4 software was a rush job. They didn't expect to have to use the snapdragon 600 processor and so they didn't have time to fully optomize it the best they could. The soc is more than powerful enough. However, i think with in the the next month or so an update will completely clear that up. The same thing happened to the s3.

That is true, with an update it will help regulate the system a little better. I do too remember that with the SIII i didnt have it then but i knew a few people who did have it. The lag isnt BAD but i think to much runs in the background and sucks the ram up I feel as if i need a task killer for some of the background crap. Plus with the awesome dev selection coming here and once tweaks start cracking out im sure it will be all gone
What I did was install trickstermod, change the governor from on demand to interactive, up the read ahead from 256 to 1024, change scheduler to deadline, and turn off zram.. and this thing is running like butter. And I'm getting amazing battery life

I see two settings for the CPU Governor... You just changed the one under the General section correct. Or did you also change the Governor setting under the Specific sections as well?
EDIT: NVM the one under Specific section is for the GPU... misread it the first time I looked at the settings.
This seems odd to me. I had an S3 tweaked to optimal performance, and the S4 completely stock still blazes in comparison.
I don't have a single sliver of lag, I go from app to app in a heartbeat, and my roommate has a Note 2 as well and the S4 is still smoother.
Very weird, this is one beast of a phone haha. There is literally nothing better at the moment since it came out so early in the year!
I'm sure any issues you have will disappear in a second once kernel development gets going!

What do you consider to be "lag"? The S4 does lag. That's all there is to it. Not as much as my EVO LTE does but it still does. Especially compared to the HTC One. But I'd rather have a little lag as opposed to the negatives with HTC, Sense, and the One.

I'm sure you know all about my phone.
My phone doesn't stutter in the slightest, it does not ever freeze up even for a second, everything opens and close immediately, multi tasking works flawlessly, there is literally nothing on it that doesn't work flawlessly. It has a processor that's already excessively powerful for just a phone.
As other people have said, some people may be having lag solely due to software, and the consensus is that the latest firmware updates took care of the minor issues people were having. I've had an android phone from every generation starting with the G1 and I can say that my phone, the one in my hand, does not lag at all, while all others had plenty of lag decreasing exponentially through generations.
I am running AOSP though, and not the stock TW though and have been since it came out, so I can't give a respectable opinion on the current state of the stock rom.

Weird. I noticed lag on the display model at Sprint, on my brothers S4 right after he purchased his, and on mine right after purchasing my S4. My brother also claims his device doesn't lag the slightest bit but it clearly did while I was testing his out. Maybe some of us are super-human and can detect a higher FPS in the 'ol noggin. Lol. Who knows.

Good to be back from iPhone 5

I've finally gave up my hopes on iPhone. I've tried jailbreak and beta ios 7. But I've never gotten any satisfaction like android would.
This sony is amazing btw! Coming from Samsung galaxy s3 to note 2 to iPhone 5. Yeah I know...
Anyways, it's been less than 24 hours with this phone. I do miss unlocked bootloader and being able to safely root the phone. Anyways I'll get my modding started once I've rooted my phone!
Any suggestion on accessories and Roms to try?

My wife has got the iPhone 5 and when she asks me to do something on it i have learned my lesson and just say no strait away now I can't stand them (I racist with the iphones), I tell you what let's design a phone which you can only turn on/off/make phone calls and download some pointless game, then stick a apple on the back and call it the world's best phone.
We all pay a lot off money to BUY the up to date phones and see what they can do unlocking bl rooting ect. (if they break it they might buy another one)
Any way sorry for going off on one about iPhone at least this is the general section
Roms wise there has just been a Sony update rolling out so with take a little while for cookers to cook them up, the rom I use is a good one but has it own little bugs in it. Just test and see what you like

One less thing to worry and spend money on!
I'm still debating if I should root the phone or not. It seems like very risky or prone to bricking the device.
Anyhow, is the battery quickly draining normal?
Seems like the battery isn't optimized.
(charged it to full last night) and within minutes, like 5% were gone!
Also I see that the media server is really talk g up the cpu. Can't seem to disable it. Any suggestions?

You probably mean the Anti-Shatter Film (ASF), which is pre-installed on your phone, contains the Sony logo, cannot be removed easily (removing it voids your warranty!) and is not very scratch-resistant unfortunately.
It's highly recommended to apply a screen protector on top of it, as soon as possible, before it's scratched! In some territories (e.g. Germany), Sony even includes a screen protector in the box.
U need to be rooted to freeze certain apps and i always have great battery life. But make sure ur GPS is off that ur emails account don't sinc like crazy also I have basically every sony app either uninstalled or frozen. I am on 13 and a half hours. With 5 and half hours screen on time and still have 29% battery left. And mediaserver is an android related issue. As soon u listen to any type of music it will come on and never quit running afterwards. No matter if music player or so one of the biggest one is probably Spotify really battery drainer. But u can improve ur battery if u use stamina mode on the xperia z.

I have an insurance although they are over priced (t-mobile $10 a month)
So I will be rooting the phone tonight and read various steps and tutorials on how to. Fairly simple enough.
Now about the media server issues. Does having widget (video/music) will kill the battery? I don't really listen to music on my phone. But I'm not sure where the media server is turning on in the background (I've killed all the task as well)

Honestly tho, the beta ios 7 isn't as smooth as you might think. It feels like stuck butter at time to time and some of the animations are just too slow. Where as in android, we can control that. Personally, I like customization over the simple and cartoon like interface.
Now that being said, I'm not saying ios isn't any competition. It is and it always will be. Therefore, we'll see improvements being made for either platforms.
I don't really miss much about ios. After all, I felt like I hit the limit on how much I can do and utilize in a smartphone.
I do like the new interface and whatnot. But it stops there. This is the reason why I really missed my android.
I never thought that jailbreak would give me powerful tools to play with. But it was way too buggy and I've had to restart my phone like every hour. More like 'jail lock'
Now back to xperia z. I've noticed today that the battery has been terrible. (little over 24 hours)
Here is my battery life picture. (also stamina is enabled along with various other features to save juice )

If its a old xz and u have significant batt loss ,then what I would do is reset using pc suite or root my device.
There's a new firm rollin out, so update to it and check ur batt usage

Keyboard lag, home page and app draw lag anyone?

Anyone here suffer the occasional keyboard lag? How about pressing a single letter will cause you to type that letter multiple times?
How about when you're flipping through your home pages or app draw you get that transition lag?
I'm getting lag way too often with my phone I'm considering it taking it back and trying out another one see if it act the same. So far my experience with this phone has been rather disappointing considering the lag.
There's even a thread here about the Play Store lag when you choose an app then it takes a few seconds for the app to pop up. I'm even getting that lag.

I just returned my phone and i'm currently on the new one. First thing I noticed different was the RAM consumption was extremely high on the first unit. I only had about 250 MB available with this new phone I'm up to 850 not sure that was the issue but we shall see.

I have noticed that once this device hits about 400mb of free ram it starts to lag very bad at 300 its un usable, mine sits at 780 after a reboot and around 550 after about an hour, also if you dont kill the sms after say 30-40 text the keyboard gets very slow, the ram optimization on this phone is absurd and absolutely ****, this is the only thing holding this phone back from being epic

Have you disabled any bloat?

No.... But the word "bloat" is used so loosely here on Xda. Exactly what is bloat? Is bloat just an app that actually bogs down your phone or is it just an app that people don't use but the carriers force upon you?
Cause really I don't see how an app that's not running really slow down a phone with this kind of specs.

The keyboard problem has nothing do to with "bloat" and more of a problem in the keyboard itself and its odd how the phone was a monster for 2-3 weeks and now is buggy even with a factory reset, about 3 weeks is what im seeing on here when some ppl are seeing problems come up, im on att btw.

I agree. Bloat is more of the second scenario you mentioned above. It shouldn't slow the phone down at all but unfortunately carriers tend to ruin these phones more than help them out with their software doing all kinds of stuff in the background
This is why the note 3 and S4 are suffering from lag issues even though technically they shouldn't be considering what's under the hood spec wise as well

Wow. I think something might be wrong. I have 1.2gb free ram. No lag

It's not carrier related either. Because my Vzw version is doing the same things the at&t version.

Note3 and s4 lag cuz of touch wiz has nothing to do with the amount of apps.
Here's a bit of an update:
Well I returned the original phone this morning because of all the issues I was having in the original post.
So far so good with the new phone, been playing with it for hours since I got it and everything appears silky smooth there's definitely a night and day difference even while the available RAM still seems kind of low.
I might have actually got a detective phone.... I'm recommending anyone who has any of these issues and are still return within your return policy, to just get another phone while you can.

This is exactly correct. The S4 and Note 3 lag has absolutely very little to do with bloat. It's because Touchwiz isn't even optimized for Jelly Bean yet. It's trash.

I experience little lag. Nothing major, maybe because of Nova launcher that the I use and the SwiftKey keyboard rather than stock.
Lately I have been experiencing weird issues with playstore freezing up. I read somewhere Google is experiencing problem with their service so it is probably not the phone.
-LG G2
weird.. had mine since launch day, rooted now, removed all bloat and i never have lag. using swiftkey though so idk about keyboard lag, but that stock keyboard seemed pretty sweet

Note 3 heating issues ?

Anyone facing heating issues on the note 3....

Make sure there is no rough app holds the cpu continously. May be files are being indexed. If you have external sdcard take backup of the content, format and the transfer only what is required.

Nope. Hottest mine got for me was when running the 3DMark benchmark. In regular use it stays cool.
Gets warm after couple hours of use, but very very very little, I kinda have to look for it to touch it, a little below the camera can barely sense it.

For me, It doesn't get hot at all during normal use (browsing, downloading, chat apps etc)
However, it gets really warm durinng gaming and benchmark testing near the camera.
Mine is the Exynos one though

I bought Note 3 a week back and having the same heating problem near the camera.....when I play Can Knockdown or candy crush (I am sure they are not high end games) ...I cancelled my plan to download Asphalt.
Did you get any resolution ?
I don't play candy crush but since bard's tale was on sale I've spent 5 hours on it already and again it just gets warm. No real heating issues, but again some games differ i guess

I face the heat u mention but.. only sometime when charging while playing game.
But I think it's normal as the processor having high frequency when the hot happen.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
Heating is totally normal at this devices due to cpu consumption and no cooling system. So no need to worry about it.
