Xperia Z1 vs Samsung Galaxy Camera S4 Zoom - Xperia Z1 General

UPDATE
strong light photos added
Hello all ..,
today i bring you a little comparison of the top 2 i say cameras till now on the market .. Mighty bright Z1 vs Chunky camera zoom
maybe some of you know that i gave my wife the Z1 and got me the S4 zoom cause i was more into more manual control ... any yes its a camera not a phone but with compromising to the form factor.
so today jumped to my mind to do a comparison between both ... how do the Bright f/2.0 lens will match the dim f/3.1 in low light quick snaps ... why in quick snaps because the zoom could manipulate anything u need to give you the type of picture you want BUT in quick snaps you will not stand a time to play with manual settings. so for casual shots which is which ?
it turned out a little surprise ... the Z1 is a very good very good shooters for casual shots.
to make it easy i used manual mode 8mp (to allow over sampling) 16:9 all auto on the Z1 and 4:3 16mp (default) all auto (except some highlighted photos) to the zoom.
so lets roll to the photos ... all low lights
Galaxy Camera Auto settings all ranged between 1/6sec iso1250 while Z1 auto settings ranges from 1/10-1/16 iso400
Dim room
Zoom Auto
Z1 night mode
Zoom auto
Zoom night mode
Z1 3x lossless Zoom Auto 8Mp
Zoom Zoom Auto
Super dim Z1 Night mode 0.8sec iso200 f/2
Here i set the Zoom to same parameters as Z1 0.8sec iso200 but f/3.1 .. see the difference of the wider aperature Amazing
Some Manual adjustments with the Zoom Longer shutter
Z1 3x lossless zoom flash on
Zoom Zoom Auto
Zoom Zoom falsh Off
Strong Artificial light Inca.flour. Tungesten
Z1
Zoom Camera
Z1
Zoom
For me ... Z1 is better in quick snapshots press and shot due to bright f/2 better contrast added sharpness too but the white balance isn't accurate while galaxy camera better white balance the Zoom if played in Expert mode will give u any output u need but u have to know whats ur doin.

I will do some crop vs crop later this night to be added for the comparison

Interesting comparison, are you running the new camera firmware on your z1?

Didnt get it yet still 4.3
.136 ??

The advantage of the s4 zoom is the optical lens, beside that its more or less Equal to other top smart phones on the market today (camera speaking)
owner of s4 zoom.

nice comparism thanks
why? we in iraq got the update via pc companion try it

Thx all for reply ... But I admit that if u inspect closer the noise is less at the z1 if we play auto vs auto between both

Samsung can't make cameras pfttsss

I have the S4 zoom and it is the best when it comes to zoom. All devices that claim "lossless zoom" have some compromise in the image quality while the S4 zoom have optical zoom wich makes it better.Even when compared to Lumia 1520 20mp camera.

The zoom feature on the Z1 is shocking, so much grain it's unreal.
As a point and shoot it's a half decent camera.
In all fairness i'd have my Galaxy Camera over either of them anyday.
Between the two i'd say the Zoom is the better camera.
When you hear 20mp you think this is going to be good, but it does let you down a little when you take a good look at your snaps.

UPDATE Comparison Pics with Galaxy S4 and 808pv added
I Really got frustrated by how they review cameras in web sites.
Although am not a photographer but atleast i know the basics and photography is my hobby.
First if all; What made me write (type!) This post because i noticed that many maanyyy dont know how to deal with this beast inside ?
So i have owned every well made camera phone till i settled with the one. I used the 808 pureview the N8 S3 and S4 also the Note2 so the pris and cons for each i passed through till am satisfied now with the One.
So first what is UltraPixel. Its a big sized pixel 2 micron which allow it to be able capturing more light than usual. Just for comparison the iphone5s pixel size is 1.5 micron (was adv. As super light sensitive)
Pixels and sensor size are directly proportional the bigger size of both the better light performance. So basically more megapixels (13) with the same sensor size mostly used (1/3") means smaller pixel size so lower light sensitivety and more noisy capture.
Most phone makers to get bright low light pics they raise the iso. Raising iso really gives more bright image but with more noise. So the right formula is to long expose the sensor to more light with bigger pixel size to get the perfect shot.
The draw back is the long exposure the slower shutter so the more blurred pics you have.
Htc added optical image stabilizer to compensate for hand shakes during longer exposure time to get blur free pics.
So Htc One is getting very near to the perfect formula a bigger pixel size (but same small sensor) with ois and some how longer exposures to get a better low light performance.
So why didnt they put a larger sensor with more pixel and join the megapixel race? The point is a big camera bump at the back as the 808pv or lumia1020 which ruins the beauty of the phone.
Htc one went for fewer pixel to allow a bigger size on the same thin and small sensor adequate for cellphone.
This very long introduction was mandatory just for everyone to know what to read when comparing cell phone camera spec.
F 2.0 means wider basically wider aperature to receive light so faster capture. So now we have a device with
Ultra big pixel f2.0 and ois
With my trials with the one to get the best pic i found that it works best with touch to focus
So just touch the area you want the phone to focus then tab the shutter button.
I found that the phone uses a matrix or centre focus metering mode by default. So you may find your self getting a very bright over exposed pic. Just touch to where you want and the metering mode will turn to Spot meter mode. Example is the lamp pic. First the phone used a centre weighted metering mode but to spot the lamp i touch to focus the lamp and its clear now.
The htc one flash is amazing. Its the only flash i used in phones that preserve the human skin tine perfectly not blue washed as samsungs or yellow washed as iphones. Try it and u will be amazed.
The flash is very strong really strong u may say double the S4 power! It never failed me. (But no near to xenon)
The Night mode in the htc one apply longer exposure time and lowers the iso to get a perfect clear bright night shot. The only draw back is u have to be steady even with the ois and be sure to touch focus on what you want and notice the focus. .. once it locked correctly press the shutter.
There is also l0ck af/exposure feature. Long press on area and the phone will lock the focus and exposure so you can talk dramatic nice shots!
The htc one captures videos @60 fps i dont know why all reviewers dont mention it while they mention it say for the note3 as a premium feature! The htc one captures 720p @60fps thats a very fluid hd video recording try it.
I like how they decided to go 720p instead of the 1080p for the @60fps cause the file size for the 1080p will be amazingly huge that u may find your self filling your 32gb version in alittle period if time.
The hd recording is just fine plenty of details and balanced video file size.
So the point is touch to focus then the shutter.
In video mode the focus is locked so to not let the phone hunts for focus every now and then. But if u want to let hunt for focus turn this feature off (not recommended in low light)
ironically the reviewers when comparing with other phones the point the device to focus during video comparison and sure its locked by default then they say mmm... Failed to focus bad camera ??
Other reviewers take a shot in dim conditions and say mmm.... The one didnt light up the scene as phone x.. . Thats because pointing the phone into bright direct point turns to spot metering it and dims the scene down ... ?? why you dont just touch focus and see the magic! I dont know!
Here is some pics i clicked hope u like it. Feel free to correct/add any part ?

You forgot to mention all the people with defective (or so we would hope) cameras. Some issues include: Purple tint in the picture, noise, inability of the camera to focus in dim settings, inability of the camera to focus at long distances, inability to focus on one side of the picture, inability to stabilize etc.
Moral of the story: if you are extremely lucky, you can get your hands on a perfect One and you'll have a great camera. For the rest of us, nothing has changed.
And does it record at 60 fps by default? I thought you had to select Fast HD from the settings for that.

the camera sure will not focus in pitch black cause due to the lack of auto-focus assist light
and yes in very dim conditions it takes many trials about 5 times to get the perfect focus point.
up in the boat pics my previous S4 failed to focus. it focused only after many trials on the moon.
Sometimes it focus automatic but you will have to re-focus again by touch focus. thats too in all cameras. All this issues in dim conditions not in bright light.
the purple tint i saw some sadly affected with it and heard that in the rolling out update 4.3 will be fixed. And yes my screen turns Red when i cover the lens with my hand.
No the 60fps isn't default but its very nice to have it specially in sporty occasions that needs fast buttery smooth HandyCam video recording
Fast HD (60 FPS 720p) is not enabled by default.
My thoughts?
IMO HTC One has a great macro shot capability. It also has an amazing HDR capturing ability. Using it during low light conditions also sometimes gives amazing shots. Everything else for me is decent.
is your camera settings set to default or customized some ?

Browski, I'm not exactly sure if you're trying to insult me, but it's not going to work. I realize that no camera will focus when there is no light. I'm saying that my camera, once in a while, simply refuses to focus, even though the lighting is somewhat decent. I'm not saying that you are lying or wrong. I'm just saying that it's apparent that not all One's created equal and therefore not everyone will be able to get the same experience as you did.
People in the Taiwan forums and those with dev editions have confirmed that the 4.3 update doesn't fix the camera tint problem. Go figure.

Other people here in xda confirmed the purple issue gone after the 4.3 update ... I will get u the link.
Wish you best of luck. And i didnt made the thread to say that the purple tint is user fault am just trying to help other users with a simple info or trick for better photography.

Here u are
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=
The issue with the purple tint is the camera software telling the camera to crank up the ISO and exposure automatically.
It's possible to keep the photo ISO down and there's no purple tint. But when recording video there are no manual settings options other than changing the resolution. Cinedroid sort of allows you to manually override the exposure level but the ISO is still maxed out so the image is underexposed but the purple tint remains and the image doesn't look anywhere near the way it should look as if it was a photo.
So a software update should be able to fix it.

Start video recording , hold on the spot you want to picture so you lock the focus then turn off recording and snap the photo ( remember don't touch anything after stopping the recording ) keep in mind this can mess things up sometimes and make super bright photos.
Here's one tip for far flash photos :
Increase exposure , if you use max exposure you better be 10/15 meters from the target , flash is very powerful with increased exposure , especially if using max , it performs like it has xenon.
If using max exposure + max contrast you better be 20+ meters away it's even more powerful.

Is it so difficult for a developer to make a tweak to give us flash when touch to focus? This is the biggest problem of the camera in my opinion as I never had purple tint

Sony Xperia Z1 Camera after 14.2.A.0.290 Update

Hello XDA Community
Just installed the 14.2.A.0.290 Update (Android 4.3) and played with the camera for a little bit. I had little time to take photos but it seems like there really isn't that much improvement on Superior Auto (I did not have time to try manual since I have to run out and leave for work!).
Also, I had to make a few attempts to tap to focus to actually focus correctly which was an issue that I didn't have before. Anyway, it's really too early for me to criticize the camera since these were taken around 7:15-7:30AM and the lighting in my home office isn't that great.
I will take more pictures throughout the day both indoor and outdoors.
These photos are unaltered and are posted on flickr so you can view the original resolution. Again, taken in Superior Auto: http://flic.kr/s/aHsjP5Eneu
If anyone can post their notes and photo samples taken on manual, please post originals on Flickr and share!
Update - just added more photos when walking to my car outside!
Hey you know what... maybe SA mode has improved. Looks like the photos taken in the new update aren't as over-exposed as the previous version. I could be wrong.
Better if you make comparison, Android 4.2.2 vs 4.3... Photos like this are showing nothing...

Still way too much processing and compression, still garbage and have to rely on manual mode.
Seems like it focuses a lot faster with 4.3
I can vouch that focusing seems to be faster. Actual picture quality doesn't seem much different, I'll run a few tests once I'm done with final exams
Is the superior auto still taking 8 MP photos? Or is it able to take 20 MP shots?

It still takes 8MP shots, but people have to realize that's a GOOD thing. If it takes 20MP shots a couple of things happen: 1. The file size will be very big, 2. There will be more noise in the picture and 3. It will have a 4:3 aspect ratio which sucks for wallpapers, etc. Superior auto uses downsampling so that the 8MP image has the quality of a 20MP image without the weird aspect ratio, smaller file size and less noise. It's good!
they need to allow higher resolution auto mode, maybe not 20 MP, but like 12 MP should still be good for wide aspect ratio I think. And it also puts it ahead of all other android phones. And seriously, they need less compressed jpeg saving. Even if it means bigger file size, the S800 can easily handle it. My old S3 with superfine picture mode generally get around 3.5 MB for 8MP and Z1 is like 2.5 MB, thats shows how that there something going on with the horrible compression ratio. Sony needs to pull their head out of their ass and accept that their imagine processing is garbage, the Z1 camera specs is suppose to destroy every other android phone, not matching them.
So no 16:9 photos in MANUAL 20 MP?
Sent from my C6903 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
dont think the lens is true wide angle lense, so its max out at 20MP 4:3, if they want to add 16:9 high MP shots, it probably have to drop to 18MP or lower.

which would be something that I could live with if I had 18mp wide and 13mp instead of going from 20mp to 8mp.

No a finger
Dat oversaturation
Wow, the Z1 picture makes me hungry. Z1 by a mile obviously, the N5 looks washed out and is not nearly as sharp with detail. Then again, the camera on the n5 isn't bad considering it's price point. But it's no match for the Z1 or most other android phones for that matter.
I'm tempted to call that picture a tie. The detail on the food and plate is much better on the Z1, however I can barely see the wood grain on the table, whereas it's pretty clear on the N5

I think the oversaturated color destroy quite a bit of detail from the nexus, and Z1 picture is kind of darker, which is why the wood grain is more visible from the nexus.

My quick camera review
All my shots are available on my flickr page, full size with EXIF info here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/sets/
Sony mobile sensors are a hit nowadays, from iPhones to LG, Oppo, OnePlus or last year's Samsung flagships, Sony's backside-illuminated (BSI) camera tech is wildly popular for it's excellent per pixel sharpness, good dynamic range and small physical size. Sony struggled however in the past to make it's Exmors work for their own Xperia smartphones, the Z had quite soft images and the Z1, while upped sensor size to 1/2.3" and megapixel count to 20, suffered from over-processing and minor lens inconsistencies. Have Sony got rid of these issues to give it's excellent sensor justice? The answer is a definitive yes, the Xperia Z2 offers fine amount of details with toned back software sharpening and snappier performance, I also didn't experience lens soft spots or distortions.
There's one interesting thing Sony introduced last year: while the large 1/2.3" sensor offers 20MPs, it's new automatic mode, Superior Auto only shoots in 8MP at 16:9 aspect ratio, and even in manual mode HDR or scenes can only be activated at 8MP (either at 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio). Why have a 20MP sensor then if 8 is where you get the most options, good question, but at least the 20 comes handy when zooming, otherwise 8 is good enough for print quality images and processing is faster at that resolution. Speaking of speed, Sony also uses two image signal processors (ISP), so camera speed definitely improved over it's predecessors.

This is the viewfinder you see when opening an app, and by default the 3840x2160 resolution Superior Auto runs which will choose the preferred camera mode (incl. HDR or night mode), adding some saturation and sharpening after downsampling. Tap to focus, flash settings, timer, burst, and smile shutter are available here. The camera records 1080p videos in this mode.
Moving on to Manual mode, you may choose the maximum 20MPs here (5248x3936) and set up flash, ISO, WB, focus metering, timer and stabilizer, or shoot at 8MP and able to choose HDR, Soft skin, Soft snap, Landscape, Night portrait, High sensitivity, Anti-motion blur, Blacklight HDR, Hand-held twilight, Gourmet, Pet, Beach, Snow, Party, Sports, Document or Fireworks scene modes. You may choose 1080p at 60FPS or 720p at 120FPS in Manual Mode.
The other modes are 4k video recording at 3840x2160, play around slow motion in Timeshift video, blur defocused areas in Background defocus, add 3D objects to the picture like dinosaurs in AR effect, add artistic filters in Creative effect, shoot a 6-second stylish video for Vine, choose best photo out of a burst in Timeshift mode or shoot a 2D Panorama by sweeping the camera. A couple of mode examples:
Image quality in good lights is stellar, details are fine even at 20MPs but especially at 8 which I recommend to use in Manual mode to be able to use HDR and scenes. Focus, white balance and exposure are quite consistent, although under certain conditions like facing directly into lights these can be a little troubled. Overall, images are natural on the slightly cooler side, and Manual mode is less saturated than Superior Auto. Dynamic range is good, and HDR helps in high contrast situations. There are no HDR inconsistencies, though the effect could be stronger. Tap to focus is fast as well as tap-to-snap speeds, and if you need to capture really fast movement you can go for high ISO or choose Sports mode. Overall, you'll shoot many quality images in daylight.
Normal vs. HDR:
Macro and closeups are very good too, there's no need for special modes just move close to the target and either let the camera shoot or tap to focus - the latter does not always hold for the shot, sometimes the camera refocuses before shooting even though you set it up perfectly. Depth of field is good in these situations, and if you prefer softer backgrounds, you can always choose Background defocus.
Low light and night shooting, as always, is where things get tough for small mobile sensors, the Z2 is no exception. The strengths of the new Xperia is dealing with higher ISO with tolerable loss of details and having a strong LED flash to light up small dark areas, so you'll be able to shoot at least usable, but with some tweaks some pretty decent low light shots. What's lacking is of course optical image stabilization, which makes avoiding handshake blur harder, especially at 1/7s exposure, which is the slowest shutter speed I saw. White balance suffers more inconsistencies during the night, there's a slight yellowish tinting, but nothing too bad. High ISO (manually available to choose up to ISO3200, the phone can go up to ISO6400 automatically) can brighten up some really dark places, Night scene and Night portrait scene modes - which requires a longer hold to operate - can also bring out dark details at a heavy loss of details, but you really need to be really steady here. HDR works in low light too. Overall, the Z2 does a decent job in low light.
ISO100 vs. ISO 3200
ISO100 vs. ISO800 + HDR
Video quality is top notch with clean, artifact-free and highly detailed, especially at 4k, and audio is nice and crisp. Steady shot can compensate some of the handshake with surprisingly good results, though OIS would be even better. Tap-to-focus and shooting a photo while recording are both available, as well as using the LED flash as torch light. While moving or with movement in the background sometimes causes refocusing, more visibly during the night - night videos are cool BTW just not as fully detailed as day ones, with some yellowish tinting. 4k is so good that you can choose to print single frames, I uploaded some at full 8MP res., while 60FPS at 1080p gives smoother motion, also uploaded 2 samples. Just note that a single minute of 4k video will take up about 400MB at 56MBit/s + 158kb/s audio, and camera shuts down after a few minutes due to overheating. No such issues at any 1080p mode, and you can shoot in HDR at that resolution.

About that overheating issue... one of the negative surprises I had with the Z2 was the phone overheating and shutting down when I really stressed the camera under the sunlight. Many face the 4k overheating problem which is understandable, it needs exceptional resources and other rivals limit this capture to 5 minutes, but under the warm Spring sun I had camera crashes when taking photos too. We're not yet know how wide-spread this issue is, but I suspect that with ISP and SoC working hard and the sun's heat and 100% screen brightness giving extra heat, things get a bit too hot and the phone chooses safety shutdown. Since the Z2 never got too hot while shutdown, I suspect that Sony set the camera app heat policy a little too conservative, so SW update could get rid of this, or maybe you'll never face this at all.
Overall the Z2's camera is an important step forward for Sony. Faster operation with more details and less post-processing results in higher rate of quality images, and short 4k clips give stellar videos as well let is be 4k, 60FPS or HDR. Low light performance could be improved with white balance and OIS, and some autofocus inconsistencies is video need to be addressed too, but I didn't find any of this too distracting. I would prefer to use all 20MPs for all manual settings and scenes, and video zooming should use the megapixels too and not just zoom into the 1080p or 4k image. But let's be clear: the Z2 produces some of the finest images and videos on mobile and the modes and settings give a lot of options to play with. And if Sony isolates and gets rid of the heat problems, which only come out in special situations, the Z2 and it's camera definitely comes recommended for some serious mobile snapping.

First shot Z1 manual mode, 2nd shot Z2 manual mode, 3rd shot Z2 Superior Auto Mode. The Z1 shot is slightly darker but more detailed with heavy sharpening artifacts (white dots). The Z2 while a bit softer on detail has no over-processing artifacts, though white balance is a bit on the red side. WB is fair on the 3rd shot, Z2 superior auto. Click on images for full resolution.
The 3rd shot is just amazing!

maybe the z2 has a stronger algorithm to smooth out/blur the noise, although noise shouldn't be a problem at low iso as seen in the first image.
still the photos are on the newer f200 fimware which has great noise performance at higher isos so that shouldn't be the issue.
just looked at the night shots and the z2 has a 1/13s exp at iso1250 vs 1/16s exp at iso1000, wonder if this slight difference would make such a big difference in 2 photos. Regardless it seems the white balance is better on the z2 at night vs the z1.
For the 3rd night photo, it seems superior auto has opted for the night scene, since it is 0.77s and iso200, the noise level is quite low vs what I am used to on my z1 using night scene.

Yes the Z1 does have sharper pictures, but mostly due to the severe overprocessing leaving a lot of artifacts. In the end, neither system can have true 20 million pixels of detail, so it's a bit pointless to pack so many MPs in.
95% same pic z2 in macro semms more details
Hmm..
So What Sony did with the Bionz is, pull the image from sensor, send to Bionz for image processing with sharpening and noise reduction.
Seems quite evident that Sony over sharpen with the algorithm and hence the black crisscross artifact -|-|-| with the Z1 camera which mistaken as noise. The Z2 has less sharpening effect hence the blur at pixel peeping level. I might be wrong though.
We'll see good results in first few firmwares then after that it will be a disaster and a disappointment just like the Z1.
Both phones have the same camera module and I hope they fix this issue.
I just don't think 20MP is justified at such a sensor size, either the lens or the sensor pixel size is causing noise and softness that needs to be processed and it's just more work for the ISP. A 12MP sensor would be more adequate. Anyways, here's a Z1 vs. Z2 comparison, both a bit yellowish in WB, any my edit of what a Lumia would produce. I notice that some of the previous indoors shots are a bit tight on color depth too.

No conclusion until extensive reviews, or if and when I can test it myself.
Whoever gets the Z2 early, should kindly test speed and reliability of autofocus, white balance and exposure (like how many shots come out good out of 10 snaps). Posting superior auto, full 20MP manual and HDR samples should also give us a clue about overall picture quality, level of post-processing, lens issues if there's any, SW preference of shutter speed and ISO, picture-to-picture performance and so on. Right now we must wait patiently, and share whatever we find online.

Note 4 Camera

I bought the S5 - one of the reasons was that i wanted a great phone camera.
But i'm pretty disappointed with the S5's Camera. Pictures are blurry when its not a bright day (picture stabilisation not enabled).
It could do much better - if you turn the flash on in a biig room (where the tiny LED just don't matter), the pictures taken are sharp. So i think its mainly a software problem (on NG9 ROM still no improvements).
I also dislike the shaky video.
Now i hope the Note 4 maybe can do better. If someone had their hands on the Note 4 or saw some non-Samsung pictures / videos, please let me know.
Sadly there aren't many Android phones with OIS out there

I had the S5 when it launched. I now have the LG G3. OIS helps the G3, but for action shots good lighting helps a lot. You can take some amazing action shots with the S5 but you need either burst mode (continuous), sport (action shot) or record in 4K. With the 4K recording, during playback, go into settings and activate screenshot option. Find the frame you want as you play back and take a screenshot. This will be superb 8mp screenshot/photo.
With the Note 4 is does have a much faster AF and lower f stop than the S5, and OIS so it will take better action shots etc....
If its low light and your shooting people or pets that are moving, you'll need xenon flash, which the Note 4 doesnt have.

this. my g3 camera is legit. only reason i still own that phone LOL
There were maybe 2 Note 4 vids from the show, but that just isn't enough to prove the camera good or bad.
(One of them was pretty shaky also..)
I bought the Nexus 5 when it cam out, but the 20 FPS video drove me crazy.
I also had the Lumia 925 - vids were steady, but quality wise, S5's videos were much better - day & night. Sound is also good on the S5.
Hope we can see more critic reviews this time. Samsung made the bad S5's disappeared, it seems.
At the unpacked, Samsung said front lens is an F 1.9. Does anyone know about the rear cam?

IS it the same (with IOS)?
And what about the aperture? The F 1.9 was targeted to the front cam.

Do you happen to know what the f stop for the rear camera might be? I know they announced f/1.9 for the front. No one seems to know what it might be for the back.

Does the Note 4 use same camera sensor as S5 then. Z2 has amazing camera in general compared to wife's S5. Z2 much better in low light but S5 much more vibrant in well lit areas. Hoping Note 4 has better optics.

No it doesnt. S5 has isocell. Note 4 has sony imx240 with OIS. The OIS will allow for much better low light pictures. Daylight pictures will look about the same. Sony phones always look noisy and underexposed. Samsung oversharpens, brightens, denoises, and saturates their pictures.
My note 3 camera is a joke in low light, I just get a blur if the subject moves. Is it likely this won't happen with the note 4 sony sensor?

Low light photography usually requires that you use a tripod to see the best results. OIS should be helpful, however, there are other factors like shutter speed, focal length of lens, aperture and ISO. The focal length of the N4 rear camera lens is 4.8mm with a fixed aperture of f/2.2. By dividing the focal length of the lens, 4.8mm, by the f stop, 2.2, you arrive at the diameter of the hole in the lens that lets light into the sensor, which is approximately 2.2mm. This measurement is identical to The Samsung Galaxy S5, which means the light entering the lens of each camera is identical. Now I don't know if you are able to control shutter speed on the S5, or if you will be able to in the Note 4, but by slowing down the shutter speed, you expose the sensor to that light for a longer period of time, which can result in a better photograph in low light, however the trade off is that nothing can move, neither your subject or your camera. If the camera has a higher quality sensor, that can play a roll as well. A higher ISO setting can help the sensor gather more light, usually at the expense of a noisier exposure. From what is known so far, I think the N4 will see improvements in low light with this Camera. I suspect it will rival or beat the iPhone 6+'s camera if it's true that it has a Sony sensor.

Sorry I think I didn't explain properly
I'm not talking low light as in dark, like trying to get shots of the moon, a city scene at night or even in a nightclub. Not even candlelight.
I mean taking shots of my son in our living room, at a soft play location or any other place where there isn't bright sunlight. Indoor pictures in general are real bad.
My compact Panasonic can handle these ok. I'm sure since the galaxy s 3 'medium' light pics are worse.
Thanks for all your inputs though. Any more advice will be appreciated.

Main reason I moved from.note 3 to z2 but like the note line.
I've been considering the z3. I like the stereo speakers too. What makes the camera better on z2/z3? I guess being a Sony lens is why but won't the note 4 use the same lens possibly?

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Sony Xperia 5 II come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Expect chromatic aberration in photos (widest lens), or I'd say CA in photos of X5 ii is a bit easier to detect than my previous Galaxy S10. Minimum focus distance is also quite long... also compared to my S10.
On the other hand, I like the Pro photo mode with AE-L and 3:2 aspect ratio option.

well: look at this:
https://www.androidauthority.com/google-pixel-5-camera-test-1167092/
in the HDR chapter:
"Next, I want to draw your attention to something in the following two sample sets. The Google Pixel 5 suffers badly from chromatic aberration (the purple hue seen in between the tree leaves). The Huawei P40 Pro has the same problem, but the effect is limited to the upper left corner of the lens. The Galaxy and Xperia handsets have no such issue. Once again, shadow noise rears its head in the Pixel 5’s shots"
Please see an example here https://we.tl/t-mLwMGMoF9H
ok, ultra wide angle lens?- I guess the test I linked from was for the standard lens
Picture is very good-great, the colors are natural, no over-sharpening, the noise is natural, but, it can sometimes happen to overexpose the image, sony did a great job for the camera..
Overall, camera software requires some minor tweaks to be top notch.. The best is, no pixel (finally) binning, true 12mp, large pixel size.
very good photo quality!

I totally quote. I am happy to find a similar look / color rendition to my Sony Full Frame mirrorless. Photo pro app does a great job, especially in "normal" (not too low) light conditions. Color rendition is natural. After Huaweis Mate (only missing the b/w sensor of the P20pro!) this Xperia is fresh air.
With good Light the Camera make good Photos, but i really have Focus issues for Quick Fotos. Its not that im Shaking or something but at 1 of 3 Photos im must repeat and then the Focus is about right. As you can see in the Attachement.
I know that Sony will fix this Problem but when 1/3 from the Photos are just not sharp for a 900 Dollar Phone its a little Dissapointing.
You are from Basel
I think, photo-quality is ok, but I would have expected more (comming from an XZ1 compact).... - Especialy the selfie-camera was better on the XZ1 compact, because it had 120° angle mode.
That certainly not encouraging to hear that. I looking at both Xperia 1 II and 5 II for quite a while already. Still not impressed with the camera system at all - the only selling point of this phone to my opinion. Can't find the proof that new Xperias can beat my old Pixel 3 or even Pixel 1 (which is the most colour accurate of all to my opinion). Can't remember of getting out of focus photos from Pixel 3.
---------- Post added at 06:54 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:49 AM ----------
For some reason this tread is nearly empty - no encouraging, mind-blowing photos. And this is quite suspicious. Why is that? Xperia 5 II / 1 II can't really shine in it? Or messing with Pro mode leave to time to take a great shot? Please upload more photos showing that new Xperia camera system is any better than others, especially against "so unnatural" Pixels.

Completely agree with it. I'd be very disappointed If I bought photo-oriented $900 smartphone and found the low light photos coming out in "quality" like yours. I believe my $50 old dinky Pixel 1 does better job. In this case "Photo Pro photographer guys" will say that you have to use Photo Pro app every single time, Sony fanboys will say that you have got a faulty unit. To my opinion it's just failure to deliver the quality everyone expected from the company which makes the best camera sensors.
Here is an additional take on photo quality.
Main lens (wide angle) in AUTO mode (with standard / Pro apps):
Good:
- Noiseless pictures. Much improved from previous generation.
- Natural looking blur in out-of focus areas (ex: background). Can create natural bokeh for cats, faces, macro, etc.
- Contrary to what some people say, good dynamic range because the auto HDR mode turns on when needed in most cases. Note that in the Pro app, you can use touch metering and still keep HDR active, a nice addition.
- Good pictures in low light: very low noise and not too much unnatural brightening of scene.
- Mostly no lens flares on standard intensity lights. (improved from Xperia 5)
Not so good:
- Focus issues at night: lack of TOF and no pre-flash sometimes leads to focus misses. Solution is to use the Pro app with continuous focus ON (mode is not available in standard app). Most often this allows phones to acquire focus except in total darkness.
- Focus issues with far subjects, such as landscape. Sometimes the camera just won't focus at all. Solution is to use tap to focus (in Pro app, this means you have to turn OFF continuous focus)
- Focus issues with eye / face detection: it's just not always accurate. Again, much better results with tap to focus.
- Very bad lens flares (light streaks) when facing a brighter light at some angles. (much worse than Xperia 5). So much for the Zeiss lens!. This issue can sometimes be solved by placing your hand to block the strong light near the lens.
- Color temperature is a bit too cold. Especially visible in darker environments.
What about non-auto modes ?
Good:
- You can set everything as you wish in Pro app.
Not so Good:
- As in previous generations, you will get a lot more noise than in auto mode, esp. beyond 200 ISO. Makes is useless for me. One solution would be using RAW and applying your own denoising filters, but you loose HDR and I didn't get much better results anyways.
- Takes more time to adjust: not suitable for quick shots.
What about the other lenses ?
- Ultra wide gives ok results. Not worse than other flagships from what I've seen.
- Zoom lens is more noisy. Only suitable in daylight IMO.
- Selfie: never used.
My conclusion:
- With Xperia 5 II, you can get great pictures with a photographic look in the right situations. But some pictures may out-of-focus and some will get bad lens flares. Also it needs too much attention to settings for me.
- So I sold the phone and kept my Xperia 5 1st gen. Photos have a bit more noise, but it's more dependable in focusing and rarely misses a picture. Colors are also warmer and more accurate at least to my taste.
Note that Xperia 1 II may not have these focusing issues but I didn't try it.
Some examples:
Xperia 5 II: flares
Xperia 5: no flare
Xperia 5 II: bad focus at night
Xperia 5: better focus at night
Xperia 5 II: natural bokeh
Xperia 5: not much bokeh
Xperia 5 II: less noise
Xperia 5: more noise
Xperia 5 II: the 3 lenses:
Ultra wide

Unfortunately this is my experience with it as well. Once light conditions aren't perfect the camera struggles with focusing and stops delivering good photos. Also the water painting effect isn't something unusual here which is not acceptable for over $900 camera-phone. Just wondering whether Xperia 1 II is better in this regard? Maybe TOF helps somehow?

Cause I'm not planning to use jpg for serious shooting, as I did with my real camera. I like to produce my own jpgs and I know how to use the 3 main(in smartphones 2) settings.
Can anyone provide me with a raw sample from each of the lenses. Would appreciate it.
