[Q] KitKat Bootloaders? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been looking around for a bit for this and figured maybe someone could give a yes or no...
Is the KitKat bootloader issue (can't go back to 4.3) a Samsung thing or is it in the Google versions? i.e. if I try an AOSP 4.4.2 ROM does it write an incompatible-with-4.3 bootloader onto my N3?

Bootloader is a Sammy thing ,you can download aosp but has to be jb one if you are on jb , so you need the hiltxx one but they don't get updated any more

Thanks Jay. I have yet to see a decent reason for going to KK so I guess I'll wait... I'm on Alliance ROM (4.3) and Philz Recovery with lean Kernel - phone is very quick, gets around 3 days battery (I'm not a heavy user, but at worst I get almost 2 days from it) and have Wannam exposed running so I can config it how I like it.
If it ain't broke, I don't fix it. (or not until something wonderful comes along using KK... Or if Alliance goes KK... )

That's not true. AOSP KK ROMs work fine on a JB bootloader.

If you flash the Platform + CSC file from the Odin firmware, yes.
But everyone must stay stock (kernel, recovery etc)

Mate, you're on XDA, why bother with OTA's? ^^

so: if google plans rollout to GE edition phone for official release 4.3 of KLP you will receive it also on your standard I9505?
i dont get why this is? thats why there are nexus phone but other phones that you flash like this wont get the ota like a nexus?

Because we are using the exact same I9505G system, kernel, csc, recovery and its official firmware so thats why.

How does this differ from say flashing the stock rom zip and a stock recovery? That way, you'd be on the stock odexed rom, with the stock kernel and the default CSC. No hassling with Odin.
So does that mean we will be able to get the OTA Updates and have a 100% GE S4?
Because my Father would really like the Google Edition S4 but he already got the Standard one and he doesn't know ANYTHING about flashing but if it would be possible to flash he could get the OTA Updates.

OTA will brick your phone atm because the bootloader can't be flashed from the GE on the 9505
so installing the android 4.2.2 google edition (not 4.3 because it is not possible with odin) you still wont receive OTA updates?

Usually ota updates doesn't flash bootloader unless there's a bootloader update ofc. So you can get updates but it's recommended to not do ota updates for your phone. Specially not when it can brick your device but it's you're choice if you want to
wrapping my head around GE
Sorry for the noobness;
I have an i9505; ever since it was announced, I was looking forward to flashing my i9505 into a GE.
Some initial roms have appeared. I just wanted to better understand some of the terms thrown around to make an informed decision;
The ROM seems to be pretty similar between all those who have thrown their hat into the ring: jamal2367, janjan, samuel2607, Hazanwar, m3dd0g, and maybe a few others. Is there any major difference between these ROMs? Q: Should all these ROMs be identical? They all have the same origin, and all are trying to go for the pure/vanilla GE experience
I think each of the ROM modders are using different kernels, or kernels slightly modified. Again; what is the official kernel for GE? is the "stock kernel" for GE the same "stock kernel" for all S4 i9505? My device is Model number SGH-I337M; Kernel v3.4.0-518267; is this the GE kernel? I know kernels can be tweaked to overclock or undervolt a phone, getting performance or better battery, respectively. I'm trying to turn my i9505 into a GE clone. Which kernel should I be looking for?
Some people have mentioned CSC. This is where I'm completely lost. From what I understand, CSC is the way phone manufacturers classify and differentiate phones model for specific countries and specific carriers. Is this correct?
Either way; how does CSC help or hurt my goal of emulating fully a GE phone? Would I need to change the currrent CSC in my phone to a second CSC? What would that accomplish?
also; someone has mentioned recovery. Should I interpret that as the bootloader? are these things related, or the actual same thing referred differently? how does the bootloader (and/or) recovery help me clone a i9595GE?
I have a question. Why are there many people working on GE Rom, and there's no actualy GE firmware (without bugs) like TW firmwares to be flashed on the phone?

there are actually pretty stable (at least the 4.2 one) however why they work on it its mostly due to its easier when you get all the libraries for the device to something they've waited for. pure AOSP can be good if you wouldn't miss the features s4 gives.

[Q] When coming from a 4.3 ROM to a 4.4 KitKat and the New Bootloader

I have just been having a read about the 4.4 for N3 and people are talking about the new bootloader and not forcing it and some people being hard bricked.
My question is this, is going from a custom 4.3 to a custom 4.4 is there anything I need to do to make sure it installs correctly or doesn't hard brick?
Or is the only problem going from 4.4 back to 4.3?
At the moment on X-Note and just looking at a couple of the other Touchwiz 4.4 custom roms, if I install one of them can I not go back?
And is this the same for the CM 4.4 Nightlies?
Thanks

Bootloader will auto install if you choose XEO package.
You cannot go back once you upgrade, so no CM no XNOTE etc (for now at least) - You can go on SweetROM or AndroidNOW and a couple of others though.

CM is 4.4 but the bootloader is MJ7 based. Which means it will not work on the NA6 Bootloader that comes with 4.4.2 -- You can use SweetROM AndroidNOW, KINGDROID or FlexKAT only. No CM Build will run on the NA6 Bootloader currently and probably not for a long time yet.

Cool, good to know. If I had backed up a ROM not on NA6, could I restore back to that? That restores the old bootloader, yeah?
Nope, Samsung block all downgrades. And this applies to NA6, which means once you upgrade to NA6 you are stuck with it until further notice with no return. Chances are a return will never be possible the same as going back before MJ7 which is still impossible.

IF you attempt it you will bootloop, so basically a soft brick yes. And you'll need to reflash NA6 to get out of the bootloop

Dial *#1234# on your phone. You'll you'll see three codes, AP, CP and CSC.
In CSC, check what code you see.
compare it to these region codes : http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Csc

@alpward , did you try to update your firmware using Kies3? Since you have a Poland CSC, you should get the Official 4.4.2 update via Kies. Give it a try.

I don't really want to go to a non-custom ROM. My other question is, if I backup a pre 4.4 pre-new bootloader ROM, can I restore back to it after going to the new bootloader or does it lock it forever?

How can you tell what bootloader the ROM has before installing? As in, CM11 doesn't have the new bootloader, right?
ROM Post should tell you what BL it's running, and yes, CM runs on the old BL either MJ7 or MK* depending on build.

[Q] hltetmo vs hltecan. Also question about bootloaders.

What is the difference between devices hltetmo and hltecan? I have a hltecan. Will we need CyanogenMod compiled for hltecan? I notice that recoveries have different versions for both devices. Also I am wondering about downgrading for 4.4 (when it comes) to 4.3. Is there a surefire way to upgrade and downgrade between 4.4 TW 4.4 CM and 4.3TW? I would not mind voiding my Knox counter. Just worried about being stuck or getting a brick for another 21 months on contract :silly:

I played around a bit earlier... The only firmware you can upgrade to 4.4.2 and downgrade back to 4.3 is the mexican telco one for the n900w8, however I had some issues but will play some more tomorrow when I get time. As for KNOX, it's just one of them things we have to live with I'm afraid..
EDIT: I'm gonna mess with the bootloader and see, doubt it can be matched/mixed to work with the N9005 but what's the harm in trying.

The harm in trying is a hardbrick.
Well yes there is that, however I am not overly fussed about it, as most HB's can be revived. I am aware of all the risks, so will be my fault 100% if I brick myself.

CM is based on MJ/MK Bootloader. You could run Android 9.6 and it'd make no difference. It's all about the bootloader

Sorry. Can't understand exactly. What exactly means what versions you can run with a new bootloader?
MJ7 is the bootloader that powers CM currently. You need a bootloader to be able to boot into the operating system. Like a key into the phone.
If you upgrade your bootloader to a newer version aka NA6 it locks the phone. Therefore anything that runs lower than NA6 aka MJ7 won't work.
Think of it like, you broke your door, you got a new door and tried to use the old key. It no long works.

hi, can you elaborate?
i always thought samsung doesn't let you downgrade to an older bootloader. but if you install CM (not samsung official updates) the bootloader doesn't get updated so you can downgrade in the future.
unless you upgrade to 4.4.2 official samsung ROM and update the bootloader, then you'll never be able to downgrade again?

[Q] New 4.4 bootloader questions!

Well, i was so stupid to flash the new stock 4.4 TW rom just to try it but after reading some topics it seems i am stuck on tw for now and can not go back to cm11.
How far are the developers on getting an AOSP running on the new bootloader? Or has anyone managed to go back to the 4.3 bootloader?
or is it possible to use the stock 4.4.2 kernel on cm11 and solve this problem that way for now?

This is the new stock kernel for 4.4 that let's you flash 4.4 based stock Roms strait from 4.2. You must also flash the baseband when going back and forth. (I think this is what you asked for)
If youre talking about a modified stock kernel for 4.4, then no. No one has anything out yet. And more then likely won't for a bit after all devices have access to 4.4
