Looks like S5 will have locked bootloader on T-Mobile..
So that means people on AT&T are screwed because
1. No Dev edition
2. Can't Use T-Mobile edition on AT&T anymore.
Only Sprint S5 will have unlocked bootloader.
In a sense this a good thing because it will bring more devs to the scene from T-Mobile's section and we can finally crack this open.

I give up on Samsung. My next phone is not Samsung. Im sick of these damn locked bootloaders.
I hear you. Its the carriers that are being dicks. Looks likes Safestrap is going to be mainstream @Hashcode got long hours ahead of him
The only way we can make them listen is not to buy them. Buy an international unlocked edition. But the majority of people have no interest in rooting and roming. I don't blame them due to warranty claims for bricked devices, but they should have something like htc dev where you unlock it you own it unless it's something unrelated to rooting. That is acceptable to me.

Safestrap is fine for me. It's a custom recovery as far as I'm concerned. I don't use the extra rom slots, just the stock one so it works for me the same as having an unlocked bootloader. I never usually flashed too many kernels always so that doesn't bother me. We can do backups restores and flash roms. What more could you want?

Battery optimized kernels. (For instance look at teamsek's N3 kernel. ~10 hours of screen on time. On asop, albeit).
Don't just blame att. Blame Samsung for allowing it to happen.

Either way it's us who pay the price.
Well I wouldn't even have rooted or installed a custom rom had they released a phone with a broken GPS that they couldn't or wouldn't fix. Ridiculous. Custom rom fixed it.

Yeah, sucks big time. I guess we need to change from Samsung to another brand, my Note 3 is a beautiful and powerful device the only thing that is keeping the leash is the locked bootloader. I'm considering to go with a Nexus or Sony smartphone, I love how I'm able to do whatever I want with my Nexus 7 2013.
If its similar to the S4, you could also look into the Canadian carriers' S5 and Note 3/4. The i337m (m for Canada and some Latin countries) had an unlocked bootloader. It was the same exact device as AT&T's just with an unlocked bootloader and ever SLOWER official ROM updates.

Just bought a Nexus 7 2013, unlocked the bootloader loader and rooted, just because! Nexus will need to put out a phone that's at least 5.5". When they do I'm on it! And it could have a crappy camera!

Yeah, what i love about my note 3 and even my old S4 was the ability to use the ir emitter to control my tv, etc. and well some other cool features like the airview, the s-note, etc.
They should make a dev edition of the phone with multi-carrier support like a (T-mobile/ATT GSM) or a (Verizon/Sprint CDMA) version. In that way they keep the people and devs happy.
I done with Samsung had a cappy,infuse,s3,now n3. I have been looking for a new device for a few months, can not stand the locked bootloader crap.
Nexus devices need bigger screens and better cameras if they fix that I would be happy as a clam.
Till then I will wait for something with a nice screen, camera, and unlocked BL!!!!!!

I wish Carriers here in US were selling Sony's flagship devices.
And also Nokia shoot themselves in foot by going with WP.... If they would've went with Android, they could've been the biggest rival for sammy.
Really what difference does an unlocked boot loader make? I'll gladly trade camera, screen, everything if it means no flashing crap AOKP Roms.

I don't think the carriers care about XDAers. We are such a small portion of the end users, but bricked devices from this forum are probably responsible for a significant portion of the returns.

Not too impressive, I've seen people here hit close to that on stock unrooted. I've gone 2.5 days with 8 hours screen time, so custom kernel doesn't seem to make that much of a difference here.

Okay so I've tried searching all over the place for this but can't find anyone with the same trouble I'm having.
The problem is my nexus 7 has basically everything missing, every google app isn't there, play store, gmail, you tube etc. all missing.
There was no sign up process when i booted up, and it's running ics version 4.0.3. Instead of jelly bean.
The only thing i can do is browse Web pages.
There also a tab in settings called developer options.
Any ideas? I'm wondering if i got a developer version by mistake?
i'm basically missing everything and can't do much at all with it.
Thanks, Matt
Strange maybe they sent you a test device on accident. I'd just flash the stock software that Google released.

They might have shipped a pre-production model by mistake, or something similar.
If you're used to rooting Android, you can grab the stock images here: http://goo.gl/p0W2s. Otherwise, just bring it to wherever you bought it and get a replacement.
There are factory images for the device available from Google that can return you to a shipping Jelly Bean build. See here:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
It's a fairly simple process, but it does require some basic setup on your desktop computer. You'll need the ability to use fastboot. If you're not up for that the easiest thing to do would be to just exchange the unit.
Edit - identical advice as above. Great minds think alike
Thanks for the replies, I'll have to try and flash the firmware when I get home tomorrow.
I'll let you know if I bork it up

Really just return it. That's the strangest screw-up I've seen in a while. Unless time is a factor, exchange it. There may be issues with the hardware in a test device, so I would just play it safe (even though fastboot is super easy and fast). And, I'm guessing this is your first Android device, so please don't let this ruin your experience.
ICS runs in full tablet mode on the nexus 7? And somehow doesn't cut off words in the settings menu like the tablet mode hacks for JB?

Are all Nexus 7s model number "me370t"? If not, then you have the MeMO 370T firmware, which was the base for Nexus 7.
Sell it and buy a new one lol
The developer options is nothing special... Thats been there since ICS. It's supposed to be there.
But I've seen a few other reports around here that also have that Asus firmware loaded on them. Not sure if they were able to get the stock loaded onto it, or if they swapped out for another one.
Let me guess, you had a pretty tree set as your background image on first boot up?
This kinda sucks for you but I think its really cool at the same time haha. Its cool how it says me370t for the model since the n7 is basically the same device minus a stylus built in

I agree, you should (must) dump the ROM and put it up for devs to look at. It's a shame you had your nexus experience marred by thus, but our devs can surely find some interesting things in the ICS build(ironically, this us how the touchpad got android, someone got one that shipped with GB, and the community was lucky enough to get to him before he wiped it).

Related to their service? Wasn't able to find it. But, yeah the site design is crappy with no option to select the memory for the find 5 white version.
EDIT: So, apparently, they still have not started selling the phone. The white version not able to add to cart because memory option not available and for the midnight black version, it is saying currently not in stock. But, the shipping rate seems to be an amazing Rs 5, so seems really good overall, if it does turn out to have 3 months replacement warranty..
Anyway, lets update here, if any one of us finds anything new. I am very much interested in getting the phone, but may go for nexus 4 again if a 32gb version is announced.
I never thought this day would come where I would part so easily with my Nexus 4. Even with the announcement of the Galaxy S4 and the HTC One I didn’t care too much about those devices. I love pure Android and how clean it runs. But there was something about the Oppo Find 5 that attracted me so much. Maybe it’s the fact that Oppo is doing something different and really trying to make software for the consumers and not something gimmicky. I’ve never been a fan of Android skins like Sense, Motoblur and Touchwiz, but Oppo isn’t just another skin, It’s more like a custom ROM on steroids. The reason I say this is because as of now they are the only Android phone manufacturer that update their firmware twice a month with features requested by the users. Let’s face it, update’s matter. When you ask people why they buy a Nexus device one of the top 3 reasons is “It get’s updates”. Similar to how Cyanogenmod implements features, Oppo does the same and since it’s GPL Compliant, with its kernel source code released. This means developers from all over the world can work together and make the Find 5 even better. :good:

Well the post specifically stated the Google Edition of the HTC One, which that plus the capability of LTE for the new N7 leads me to believe this was not Google's choice. This sounds like a slam to the face from the US carriers to force ISIS in order to use the devices on their networks. Why else would this feature not exist in a newly capable LTE device when it was present in the previous generation device?
Man I hate the US cellular companies. Forcing their agendas and profits on device manufacturers.

see i would go with that thought but for all of us with the wifi model that would mean we are out of luck completly, not having an option for a sim at all.....so idk

Nothing fishy about anything. Whether you're "pretty sure" about anything is not the point. I'd rather take the word of the Director of Product Management. And besides the reason being given is that the Nexus 7 2013 is missing a secure element, which might have been omitted due to a myriad of reasons (cost, maybe?). We wait and see if more info develops.

Dupe.
I remember reading recently about a compromise of the secure element chip used in the vast majority of commercial electronics and how this was bad because there was essentially only one vendor. I'll see if I can find the link when I get home.
Maybe this had something to do with the decision? Or maybe someone decided in their infinite wisdom that a 7" device is simply awkward to use to pay?
I use wallet on my N4 all the time but only once on my N7 (2012)...

Isis SIM
So the N7v2 has NFC but no secure element. According to the press information for ISIS, the ISIS carrier SIMs include a secure element. So would it be possible to use ISIS on a N7v2?

you can install it, and if you have the option to change tap and pay settings, that means it will work. No option, then no, its not available.
This just in: www(dot)androidpolice(dot)com/2013/09/18/motorola-releases-droid-maxx-verizon-only-and-moto-x-gsm-and-verizon-developer-editions-for-649-99/
Same goes for Moto X for GSM and Verizon versions as well.
Do the dev editions already have system write ability?

From what I've read they have unlockable bootloaders....not too sure what the difference will be between the Dev edition and consumer edition..

No Verizon bloatware for starters. I want to know if root apps will work without modification.

Why would they? That would be stupid, you would have to unlock the boot loader as mentioned.
It is called a question, genius.

I'm not sure if it won't have Verizon bloatware since it's only getting released on Verizon. The GSM Moto X Developer Edition definitely won't have Verizon bloatware.
The Dev edition will be identical to the regular phone the only difference is that you can unlock the boot loader. It will have the same bloat we have a Google play edition would be vanilla android.
This really makes me mad. I feel like I am punished for buying early. :crying:
Anyone want to buy a consumer edition for $600?

This is exactly correct.
Developer editions are IDENTICAL to the retail versions of the devices with the only exception that the bootloaders are unlocked. All bloat will still be there and it will still be the lightly skinned version of android that we're used to.

My 14 day return window expired 1 day before they announced the developer edition (and I researched ahead of time - everybody thought they would do a Moto X dev edition, but nobody was thinking they'd do a Droid Maxx developer edition). I'm not that upset though because we have root now and that's what I really needed. Beyond root I'm not so sure custom ROMs would be as desirable since we can't exactly expect Cyanogenmod to support all the unique features of the Maxx.
The only reason I want the DE is for custom kernels.

So... is it worth getting a DE phone? Or is it more useful for people who actually do Android Development. I'd like to be able to unlock and root... but not sure if its worth the cash.

Depends if you want to change the operating system a lot switching roms I would say go with the dev edition it is better you can load a kernel not use ss and kexec to run roms. If you just want root well we have root and hash is working on ss (very close now) so you can flash roms.if you want. I don't think it is worth spending 650.00 for the phone vs.299.00 its more than double the price and you cant subsidize it as far as I know it is a straight purchase I believe. I doubt I will flash to many roms anyway this o.s runs great and I can customize it with xposed so my phone looks like it is running a custom rom, with out the bugs. My bioinic was so laggy when ever I ran a rom the only ones that ran right were based of the stock build and kernel. So why bother like I said xposed makes it so any dummy can create a custom looking rom in 5 min. Granted you wont get all the bells and whistles but I never used all the pie holo stuff anyway.
Well I found a buyer for my (locked) Droid MAXX and I ordered the Developer Edition yesterday. Hasn't shipped yet.

Couldn't some dev out there figure a way to implant whats on the dev version to a consumer version? Is it not software that they would be dealing with? Or it also hardware based?

The fun stuff (kernels, system updates, etc., for example) are blocked in a signed bootloader unless the updates are signed with Motorola's private key. The bootloader will not allow the update to flash unless it is signed with the private key that matches the bootloader's public key, which only Motorola has. The unlocked bootloader simply removes the requirement that updates must be signed. Having an unlocked phone gives you no way to determine the private key.

I'm working with Gear VR and had reason to ask the right questions to my contact at Samsung and here's what he had to say today about a firmware update that I need for development (but everyone will get), "I'm hearing the Verizon update is supposed to be available in the next few days or so"
Just thought I'd share since it's rare we have reliable, official announcement before the OTA's flow. To be clear, I don't know if this update will be Android L. I DO know that it will have the bits needed to support Gear VR on retail devices.
He's also working on getting me the ROM sooner, but I'm not sure if I will be allowed to distribute. Maybe others will be getting it early for the same reasons though so if you want a decent reason to hope....

AT&T note 4 got an OTA update today...
What did the AT&T update consist of? Minor stuff or Android L?

If I'm not mistaken, HD voice something and bloatware.

Thanks. I hate updates like that. I hope that whatever we get from Verizon is different but I have a funny feeling we will be getting a useless update as well.

Guy in the droid life site commented that after the update on his AT&T note 4 update, the recents button was faster and more responsive. I hope it's really true and us Verizon users see the same improvement. That lag is the biggest gripe I have with this phone right now. Yeah, it's that good of a phone!

Only lag I have is the recent apps cap. Takes a second or two sometimes to load up my list of recent apps. Not sure if this is related with ART though. Any thoughts?

We WILL get Gear VR support ( the whole point of this thread). Beyond that, I can't say and don't care much. If I was fixed on root or L, I wouldn't be running the Note 4 given how good Samsung is getting at locking the boot loader. In fact, If not for my VR development, I might have purchased my first Nexus device despite the lack of SD (or grabbed the G3).
By the way, why are people still spamming with "sent from my weAlreadyKnowAndDontCare using irrelevantAndAnnoyingApp"? That's so Outlook 2000

This is the first Android phone for me where I am not terribly concerned if I don't get an unlocked bootloader. Root would be nice but it's not a deal breaker for me. I am looking forward to Android L on this phone.
As for my Tapatalk signature, I rarely post in forums so I forgot the signature was even there! I more or less read forums these days.
Thanks for posting the information!

Is this OTA really worth taking seeing as we seem not to be close to attaining root?

Agreed. Switched back to JIT Dalvik and it Was still persistant. Hopefully this update will tweak a lot of things.
It's Friday. I wish there will be something during the weekend. Really want the HD calling
