Okay so I've tried searching all over the place for this but can't find anyone with the same trouble I'm having.
The problem is my nexus 7 has basically everything missing, every google app isn't there, play store, gmail, you tube etc. all missing.
There was no sign up process when i booted up, and it's running ics version 4.0.3. Instead of jelly bean.
The only thing i can do is browse Web pages.
There also a tab in settings called developer options.
Any ideas? I'm wondering if i got a developer version by mistake?
i'm basically missing everything and can't do much at all with it.
Thanks, Matt
Strange maybe they sent you a test device on accident. I'd just flash the stock software that Google released.

They might have shipped a pre-production model by mistake, or something similar.
If you're used to rooting Android, you can grab the stock images here: http://goo.gl/p0W2s. Otherwise, just bring it to wherever you bought it and get a replacement.
There are factory images for the device available from Google that can return you to a shipping Jelly Bean build. See here:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
It's a fairly simple process, but it does require some basic setup on your desktop computer. You'll need the ability to use fastboot. If you're not up for that the easiest thing to do would be to just exchange the unit.
Edit - identical advice as above. Great minds think alike
Thanks for the replies, I'll have to try and flash the firmware when I get home tomorrow.
I'll let you know if I bork it up
Wonder if there's any hardware difference between this and the retail versions, could be worth something.

I've tried using the Nexus Root Toolkit v1.5 but due to having ics I can't seem to get it to work, I am close to giving up trying haha.

Really just return it. That's the strangest screw-up I've seen in a while. Unless time is a factor, exchange it. There may be issues with the hardware in a test device, so I would just play it safe (even though fastboot is super easy and fast). And, I'm guessing this is your first Android device, so please don't let this ruin your experience.
ICS runs in full tablet mode on the nexus 7? And somehow doesn't cut off words in the settings menu like the tablet mode hacks for JB?
That's either interesting or fishy

Are all Nexus 7s model number "me370t"? If not, then you have the MeMO 370T firmware, which was the base for Nexus 7.
Sell it and buy a new one lol
The developer options is nothing special... Thats been there since ICS. It's supposed to be there.
But I've seen a few other reports around here that also have that Asus firmware loaded on them. Not sure if they were able to get the stock loaded onto it, or if they swapped out for another one.
Let me guess, you had a pretty tree set as your background image on first boot up?
This kinda sucks for you but I think its really cool at the same time haha. Its cool how it says me370t for the model since the n7 is basically the same device minus a stylus built in

before you take that back let the devs get a dump of that image it could potentially have something interesting in the software of firmware.

Yeah I am thinking that I'm going to have too, and it's my third Android device, I've got an SGS that's rooted with a custom rom, a Galaxy Note and now this tablet. I've never had problems with messing with software on a device before, but for some reason fastboot just wont play ball on this device

I agree, you should (must) dump the ROM and put it up for devs to look at. It's a shame you had your nexus experience marred by thus, but our devs can surely find some interesting things in the ICS build(ironically, this us how the touchpad got android, someone got one that shipped with GB, and the community was lucky enough to get to him before he wiped it).

Some other threads discussing "full partition" problems loading custom ROMs onto the Xoom led me to some digging around. The short story is that Motorola only allocated 236MB to the system partition on the Xoom, and the current JB stock build (JZO54K) occupies nearly 231MB.

Given that various features were not included in the JB update when compared to the Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus, it's all starting to make more sense why. When Honeycomb rolled out for what is now thought to be a public beta test of the Android tablet form factor, the system partition likely had plenty of space for growth. Dial the calendar ahead several months, and ICS emerges with a footprint that is nearing the Xoom's capacity. And the first item to go - face unlock. It's all good, no one really uses it for actual security but is a cool novelty to show your non-Android/non-ICS friends. Then comes Jellybean. And it's BIG. The Galaxy Nexus system.img file is over 400MB for toro (obviously apples and oranges due to its use as a phone, but you get the idea). So, to make it work for the Xoom, a lot of the frills are stripped away - new wallpapers, sound search as a system app, on-device voice search, Google hot word to start a search in Google Now, etc. It all just doesn't fit inside the partition that Motorola assigned in early 2011. Sad when you realize that there is a giant 32GB flash memory chip built in. And I suspect the Nexus S is faced with the same problems - hardware will work, but the system partition is just too small.
And now we hope for custom ROMs for 4.2 that can fit inside that tiny system partition. Based on the current size of CM10 for wingray, I'd say Team EOS has the best possibility from the size standpoint. That shiny Nexus 10 is looking better and better...

Possible, but Motorola would first have to write an updated boot loader, and the OTA would have to move existing files to the new blocks. Probably an OTA nightmare. I recall HTC skipping updates to ICS for this reason.

I personally use Google now and really find the information helpful. However you are correct-get rid of the Motorola crap like Cordy and Dungeon Defender, and the Google apps that no one uses like Currents. Make Maps, Earth, and other Google products optional instead of being system apps and it will probably fit. I do think both CM and Team EOS will need to strip lot some of their own system apps to make it fit.

I am obviously no Dev. But, is it not possible for any of the Devs here to write a new bootloader and partition for the Xoom? Or at least modify the current one? Seeing as it is unlocked. I only ask because well, the Xoom is such a very nice peace of hardware, as old as it is. The shear fact that it is virtually a pure Google device, has a metal housing, mSD slot, and is all around a cool device. One could hope for such a monumental mod.
Another thing, is it possible to boot off of a mSD card and install the OS on there? Not that that would be such a hot idea due to read and write problems. But an option either way?

More power to the Dev that could make this happen, but modifying the boot loader can be a quick journey to a bricked Xoom.

Having owned the Advent Vega and used many home brew ROMs it was very common to change the partition layout to make the ROM fit. An issue used to be when using nvflash from a PC as it would not account for any bad nand blocks. But, in the main it worked.
Owning the Skate phone that too has the opportunity to change the system / cache / data partition layout to fit the custom ROMs.
Whether that would be an option supported for the Xoom I do not know.

The nexus s has a system 528mb system partition.
There is no hardware limitation at all for that device.
You could. make a case that its amount of ram makes for a bad user experience though. It has around 345mb available. But they put 4.1 on it so there is a no reason they shouldn't have supported 4.2 IMHO.
Looks a like a case of we don't want to bothered supporting that old device to me.
So let me get this straight, there is literally no way we can repartition our system storage space to anything different? Even with an unlocked bootloader and such?

I can't with certainty say there is" no way", but from what I've read on this recently it isn't easy. The boot loader has partition info so it knows where to look for the files to make the device function. Modifying the boot loader could brick the device. I've also become aware of symlinks that enable moving files from the system partition into the data partition to save space-no idea how this works.

let's get a developer in here and find out then!
Nexus One has had a fair few partitions changed in its life span. Up to Gingerbread with stock, ICS and JB had different .... Someone reach out to some nexus one dev perhaps to see if the same sort of thing could be applied here?
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D X515m using xda premium
Nexus One devs rely on the Blackrose bootloader to allow repartitioning. The Blackrose author would be the one to contact if you needed a pointer on where to start to at least figure out IF it's doable or not on the Xoom (the two don't have the same bootloader, obviously).
Somewhere over in the dev section Big Rush Dog said it would lead to certain brick and couldn't be done. They also said youtube HQ wouldn't work on armv6 due to lack of omx libs, but that got hacked (eventually) and we got that. so may be possible but not without hard work and bricked devices

I am going to go out on a limb and say that the RAM could end up being a non issue. Reason I say this is because it can be replaced with other RAM chips from another device. Say the Thunderbolt or whatever. The only question I have pertaining that would be. Does RAM for mobile devices follow a specification as far as pin outs is concerned? If they do, and as long as the voltage and frequency threshold are the same if not similar to a degree. Then we could upgrade those. I know that not all people hers would be willing to try such a feat. But I would. And if it worked, I would be willing to help others out in that area.
I believe it is safe to say that I am not the only person that is passionate about how cool devices is. Its age and lack of NFC does not bother me. The thing is solid and has mSD. I can not tout how important that one feature is to me. Its funny, we live in a world where there is supposedly this "Green" movement. Yet no one is pushing these companies to make the hardware they make last longer or make them upgradable. I understand the whole making money model. But we are either ruining this planet or we are not. It is not both ways. You are either "Green" or not. A woman can not be some what pregnant. She either is or is not. These corporations don't give a rats ass about the future generations or their home.
I don't know, it is a bit sickening

Mount it in Linux and rebuild the partitions with lvm... it's not too difficult. If you've ever owned a Touchpad, you might have followed one of my guides to get Ubuntu running in a triple boot, doing this is necessary. But unfortunately there is no Novaterm for Android, so the easiest way would be through ADB shell while booted into recovery.
Also, the bootloader has nothing to do with resizing partitions. It just directs your device to the desired partition to boot from. For example, GRUB tells your PC whether to boot into Linux or Windows.

I think most folks in the Xoom forums would agree that RAM is not an issue; we're mainly discussing the system partition size in storage memory. If this was in reference to the Nexus S, I only mentioned that device in the OP since it was dropped from AOSP at the same time as the Xoom.

Good call on that. Not sure where my head was at when reading your other post. I apologize for that. Though, the whole upgrading the RAM chip thing in my opinion is something I would like to under take. More RAM could help in the performance field. Imagine having 3 maybe 4 gigs onboard this thing? Heck 2Gigs would make a killer difference. Any way, I'll jump off the RAM topic. Another subject for another day and post. Thanks for the head check.

There are already released units. As is common, grey market was the first to release followed by iTech and Datablitz although Datablitz is the only one right now that offers official Asus warranty among the brick-and-mortar stores. Grey market units are purportedly having official Asus warranty as well.

ordered from B&H in nyc, shipped to cali, then a relative will be bringing it over here next week. $269 no tax, free shipping. great deal i just hope I got one that works flawlessly!

The N7 2013 should address the weakness of the previous N7 since it's now using a Qualcomm processor which, in my opinion, is better than Tegra. (Tegra only shines in the GPU department since that's what NVidia does ) As for the issues, when I was still on stock I didn't experience any of those and I'm one of those people who don't worry about things like that unless it happens to me. It's just that people who have problems will usually post it online while people who don't won't even bother mentioning it which is why you'll find more problems being reported than those that have no issue.
As for the random reboot issue, do you know how to get kmsgs? If you do, can you pastebin it and message me the link since I want to know also if it's a hardware or software issue.
As for the warranty, that's what I'm not sure about. I heard from someone that ASUS Philippines will be honoring the N7 2013's international warranty but don't quote me on that one.

If you factory reset and hasn't experienced the reboot, don't worry about getting the kmsg. Might just be an app conflict or something. Also, you should install the OTA then perform a factory reset. I only trust OTAs after a factory reset. Too many problems come from OTAs performing an improper upgrade of the currently installed apps' data. If you encounter problems with it after the OTA and factory reset, then time to claim warranty as your device just betrayed you. Joking aside though, if you encounter problems after the OTA, it's better to claim warranty after so you can get a better replacement now rather than having to upgrade to the KitKat version in a few months and then having errors then.

Also, it's a rule and might get you reprimanded if you're reported to a moderator or a moderator just happens to be browsing this thread. If you experience a reboot or any problem, do a factory reset. After, if you still experience it, claim warranty since I would reason that that's already a hardware problem. Also forward me the last_kmsg if you can. If you're not familiar, just Google it as there are plenty of guides out there and I'm not too keen in replicating what I consider an already extremely redundant information. :silly:
intersectRaven said:

So you are conceding that it is hardware related? I wish they charged an extra 50 dollars and made better quality control My previous experience with my first nexus was utterly disappointing. I really hope I don't get a lemon this time around.
Is the wifi issue really there or grossly exaggerated?

The reboot thing could be hardware related. The others could also be hardware related but, from what I've read so far, it could just be fixed through software. I'm more concerned that the reboot could be memory related so it would be very difficult to address via software.

glad to see fellow pinoys here in the nexus 7 fhd thread...im planning to get one myself (can help not to notice those issues though)...kudos to you iR for starting our own thread!
how's the development support so far? anyone here running mod already?
I'm working with Gear VR and had reason to ask the right questions to my contact at Samsung and here's what he had to say today about a firmware update that I need for development (but everyone will get), "I'm hearing the Verizon update is supposed to be available in the next few days or so"
Just thought I'd share since it's rare we have reliable, official announcement before the OTA's flow. To be clear, I don't know if this update will be Android L. I DO know that it will have the bits needed to support Gear VR on retail devices.
He's also working on getting me the ROM sooner, but I'm not sure if I will be allowed to distribute. Maybe others will be getting it early for the same reasons though so if you want a decent reason to hope....

Guy in the droid life site commented that after the update on his AT&T note 4 update, the recents button was faster and more responsive. I hope it's really true and us Verizon users see the same improvement. That lag is the biggest gripe I have with this phone right now. Yeah, it's that good of a phone!

We WILL get Gear VR support ( the whole point of this thread). Beyond that, I can't say and don't care much. If I was fixed on root or L, I wouldn't be running the Note 4 given how good Samsung is getting at locking the boot loader. In fact, If not for my VR development, I might have purchased my first Nexus device despite the lack of SD (or grabbed the G3).
By the way, why are people still spamming with "sent from my weAlreadyKnowAndDontCare using irrelevantAndAnnoyingApp"? That's so Outlook 2000

This is the first Android phone for me where I am not terribly concerned if I don't get an unlocked bootloader. Root would be nice but it's not a deal breaker for me. I am looking forward to Android L on this phone.
As for my Tapatalk signature, I rarely post in forums so I forgot the signature was even there! I more or less read forums these days.

Been using my Nexus 6 for about two days now and, while I love the ever loving begeezus out of this phone, there is one HUGE issue I have a problem with. Sadly, it's not even Google or the phone's fault, it's my carrier. Using AT&T, for some reason, they thought it a good idea to block the update until June. Now I know that I can manually install the update myself, but I have yet to find a method that is, for a lack of a better word, idiot proof and actually works. Other than that, this phone is freaking awesome!

I second this motion. I had been out of the mix forever. That tool is a lifesaver. So easy to follow, and there are tons of video guides on youtube on how to use it.
Adb sideload requires no unlock is just a hair above idiot proof
This worked on the new Nexus 6 I just picked up at AT&T last week. It immediately notified me with the 5.1 update.
1. Backup your Nexus 6 (go to “settings” >> “backup & reset” >> select an account to back-up by clicking on “backup” and selecting the account you want to backup)
2. Remove your SIM card
3. Reset your Nexus 6 (go to “settings” >> “backup & reset” >> “factory reset data”)
4. Restore your Nexus 6 during set-up but DO NOT insert your SIM card
Make sure to connect to your Wifi during the setup process and leave the SIM out. It should prompt you with the system update. Also this method prevents the few AT&T bloatware apps from installing as a plus.
You don't even have to sideload to get 5.1 from Google OTA, in your case: link

I think you will love the phone once you get your hands on one. Camera ain't like the note 4 but it's up there it's better then supposedly the older nexus devices which honestly I never owned so idk.
Battery is good there's plenty of development on this device and what's great that it's universal through out all carriers, here's a battery stat from my usage but everyone uses their phones differently.

That's really odd - your experience is the first I've read where a 5.0.1 Nexus 6, with SIM removed and then factory data reset, wouldn't pick up the OTA (via WiFi) soon after it booted up and went through setup. Guess it's not foolproof.

It's part of the LS997 ROM released by Team DevDigitel. I should be able to get an APK for you but it's probably just as easy to extract it from the ROM. With LG stock apk's YMMV.
Sent from my LG-LS997 using XDA Labs
I know this apk works since I just pulled it from a ROM that has it included and it was working with the ROM. There must be some sort of dependency that is keeping it from running. I'm going to see if I can do some reverse engineering on it to find out what that dependency is. If anyone can save me a step, I'd be happy to hear what that dependency is!
Did you ever figure this out because I would like to do this myself. Also, you mentioned you had the stock messaging app working. Would you mind sharing the apk and any special instructions not covered by this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/themes/stock-music-app-to-att-version-t3552963

You're not on Sprint (lucky you). For some dumb reason, hardly any of the STOCK LG APPS work on an LG PHONE. Makes perfect sense. I understand the desire for the carrier to make the phone "theirs" or to try to go with a more "vanilla Google" experience, but if I want to install LG apps on an LG phone, that should not be more difficult than rocket surgery.
My turn to rant >>> Unfortunately Sprint has the best coverage where I live and their prices are much better than Verizon's. Next time I'll just get an unlocked device. I would love to just root the phone in order to run stock apps, as I had before, but everytime I do there seems to be a malfunction and my phone ends up bricked (not from installing incompatible ROMs or kernels, I think I just flash the phone too many times?). Not to mention Sprint (and AT&T) has conveniently decided to not make the KDZ/TOT files available to the public. Let's not even mention the ridiculous static boot screen...

Someone in another thread suggested it might be a missing framework. I don't know enough about mobile development to be able to say that he was on the right path or not, but it seems logical to me. It's probably something buried deep in the system that would only be accessible by having root permissions.
I do wonder about the ability to achieve this through a terminal app and changing some permissions as the SystemUI Tuner app does in order to change status bar icons without root. Wish someone would work on that, or I wish I had enough knowledge to do so myself... oh well.

Serious question: how does the method used by SystemUI Tuner work without root, and why wouldn't this method work for non-rooted phones and stock apps? If you're not familiar, the app requires non-rooted phones to use ADB to send a shell command 'pm grant com.xxx.xxx android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS' and 'android.permission.DUMP'. Perhaps there is code in the app itself to trick the system into thinking it has root using these commands?? You would know better than me...
I'm waving the white flag on this, however I am curious to know how that works. I might consider another carrier in the future however. Preferrably one that doesn't cripple stock apps.
