Love my Nexus 6, but.... - Nexus 6 General

Been using my Nexus 6 for about two days now and, while I love the ever loving begeezus out of this phone, there is one HUGE issue I have a problem with. Sadly, it's not even Google or the phone's fault, it's my carrier. Using AT&T, for some reason, they thought it a good idea to block the update until June. Now I know that I can manually install the update myself, but I have yet to find a method that is, for a lack of a better word, idiot proof and actually works. Other than that, this phone is freaking awesome!

If you're 100% stock, just sideload. Very easy.

I second this motion. I had been out of the mix forever. That tool is a lifesaver. So easy to follow, and there are tons of video guides on youtube on how to use it.

Adb sideload requires no unlock is just a hair above idiot proof

This worked on the new Nexus 6 I just picked up at AT&T last week. It immediately notified me with the 5.1 update.
1. Backup your Nexus 6 (go to “settings” >> “backup & reset” >> select an account to back-up by clicking on “backup” and selecting the account you want to backup)
2. Remove your SIM card
3. Reset your Nexus 6 (go to “settings” >> “backup & reset” >> “factory reset data”)
4. Restore your Nexus 6 during set-up but DO NOT insert your SIM card
Make sure to connect to your Wifi during the setup process and leave the SIM out. It should prompt you with the system update. Also this method prevents the few AT&T bloatware apps from installing as a plus.

You don't even have to sideload to get 5.1 from Google OTA, in your case: link
(EDIT: Just saw the post above this one - same steps I referenced)

I think you will love the phone once you get your hands on one. Camera ain't like the note 4 but it's up there it's better then supposedly the older nexus devices which honestly I never owned so idk.
Battery is good there's plenty of development on this device and what's great that it's universal through out all carriers, here's a battery stat from my usage but everyone uses their phones differently.

That's really odd - your experience is the first I've read where a 5.0.1 Nexus 6, with SIM removed and then factory data reset, wouldn't pick up the OTA (via WiFi) soon after it booted up and went through setup. Guess it's not foolproof.

nexus 7 with ics and no apps

Okay so I've tried searching all over the place for this but can't find anyone with the same trouble I'm having.
The problem is my nexus 7 has basically everything missing, every google app isn't there, play store, gmail, you tube etc. all missing.
There was no sign up process when i booted up, and it's running ics version 4.0.3. Instead of jelly bean.
The only thing i can do is browse Web pages.
There also a tab in settings called developer options.
Any ideas? I'm wondering if i got a developer version by mistake?
i'm basically missing everything and can't do much at all with it.
Thanks, Matt
Strange maybe they sent you a test device on accident. I'd just flash the stock software that Google released.

They might have shipped a pre-production model by mistake, or something similar.
If you're used to rooting Android, you can grab the stock images here: http://goo.gl/p0W2s. Otherwise, just bring it to wherever you bought it and get a replacement.
There are factory images for the device available from Google that can return you to a shipping Jelly Bean build. See here:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
It's a fairly simple process, but it does require some basic setup on your desktop computer. You'll need the ability to use fastboot. If you're not up for that the easiest thing to do would be to just exchange the unit.
Edit - identical advice as above. Great minds think alike
Thanks for the replies, I'll have to try and flash the firmware when I get home tomorrow.
I'll let you know if I bork it up
Wonder if there's any hardware difference between this and the retail versions, could be worth something.

Really just return it. That's the strangest screw-up I've seen in a while. Unless time is a factor, exchange it. There may be issues with the hardware in a test device, so I would just play it safe (even though fastboot is super easy and fast). And, I'm guessing this is your first Android device, so please don't let this ruin your experience.
ICS runs in full tablet mode on the nexus 7? And somehow doesn't cut off words in the settings menu like the tablet mode hacks for JB?
That's either interesting or fishy

Are all Nexus 7s model number "me370t"? If not, then you have the MeMO 370T firmware, which was the base for Nexus 7.
Sell it and buy a new one lol
The developer options is nothing special... Thats been there since ICS. It's supposed to be there.
But I've seen a few other reports around here that also have that Asus firmware loaded on them. Not sure if they were able to get the stock loaded onto it, or if they swapped out for another one.
Let me guess, you had a pretty tree set as your background image on first boot up?
This kinda sucks for you but I think its really cool at the same time haha. Its cool how it says me370t for the model since the n7 is basically the same device minus a stylus built in

before you take that back let the devs get a dump of that image it could potentially have something interesting in the software of firmware.

Yeah I am thinking that I'm going to have too, and it's my third Android device, I've got an SGS that's rooted with a custom rom, a Galaxy Note and now this tablet. I've never had problems with messing with software on a device before, but for some reason fastboot just wont play ball on this device

I agree, you should (must) dump the ROM and put it up for devs to look at. It's a shame you had your nexus experience marred by thus, but our devs can surely find some interesting things in the ICS build(ironically, this us how the touchpad got android, someone got one that shipped with GB, and the community was lucky enough to get to him before he wiped it).

Well the post specifically stated the Google Edition of the HTC One, which that plus the capability of LTE for the new N7 leads me to believe this was not Google's choice. This sounds like a slam to the face from the US carriers to force ISIS in order to use the devices on their networks. Why else would this feature not exist in a newly capable LTE device when it was present in the previous generation device?
Man I hate the US cellular companies. Forcing their agendas and profits on device manufacturers.

Nothing fishy about anything. Whether you're "pretty sure" about anything is not the point. I'd rather take the word of the Director of Product Management. And besides the reason being given is that the Nexus 7 2013 is missing a secure element, which might have been omitted due to a myriad of reasons (cost, maybe?). We wait and see if more info develops.

Dupe.
I remember reading recently about a compromise of the secure element chip used in the vast majority of commercial electronics and how this was bad because there was essentially only one vendor. I'll see if I can find the link when I get home.
Maybe this had something to do with the decision? Or maybe someone decided in their infinite wisdom that a 7" device is simply awkward to use to pay?
I use wallet on my N4 all the time but only once on my N7 (2012)...

So the N7v2 has NFC but no secure element. According to the press information for ISIS, the ISIS carrier SIMs include a secure element. So would it be possible to use ISIS on a N7v2?

There are already released units. As is common, grey market was the first to release followed by iTech and Datablitz although Datablitz is the only one right now that offers official Asus warranty among the brick-and-mortar stores. Grey market units are purportedly having official Asus warranty as well.
*Note, please don't forget to use English as this is an international forum even though this thread is specifically for discussion for the benefit of Filipinos, it still is open to people of other nationalities who might be staying in the Philippines and need local information.

I'm getting mine next week but I am extremely hesitant because of all the reported out of the box issues. Multi - touch and GPS issues are software related right? What about wifi issues? Random reboot issues?
I owned the original n7 and it was horrible! It was lagging everywhere plus it had weak wifi reception.
Does the n7 2013 have international warranty and will asus philippines honor it?
ordered from B&H in nyc, shipped to cali, then a relative will be bringing it over here next week. $269 no tax, free shipping. great deal i just hope I got one that works flawlessly!

The N7 2013 should address the weakness of the previous N7 since it's now using a Qualcomm processor which, in my opinion, is better than Tegra. (Tegra only shines in the GPU department since that's what NVidia does ) As for the issues, when I was still on stock I didn't experience any of those and I'm one of those people who don't worry about things like that unless it happens to me. It's just that people who have problems will usually post it online while people who don't won't even bother mentioning it which is why you'll find more problems being reported than those that have no issue.
As for the random reboot issue, do you know how to get kmsgs? If you do, can you pastebin it and message me the link since I want to know also if it's a hardware or software issue.
As for the warranty, that's what I'm not sure about. I heard from someone that ASUS Philippines will be honoring the N7 2013's international warranty but don't quote me on that one.

Haven't had a single reboot since I factory reset 4 days ago
Can I still get kmsgs from terminal emulator of my last reboot?
I'm new about this thing but willing to learn...
And about trusting my device..do you mean I should install my OTA.

If you factory reset and hasn't experienced the reboot, don't worry about getting the kmsg. Might just be an app conflict or something. Also, you should install the OTA then perform a factory reset. I only trust OTAs after a factory reset. Too many problems come from OTAs performing an improper upgrade of the currently installed apps' data. If you encounter problems with it after the OTA and factory reset, then time to claim warranty as your device just betrayed you. Joking aside though, if you encounter problems after the OTA, it's better to claim warranty after so you can get a better replacement now rather than having to upgrade to the KitKat version in a few months and then having errors then.
I really like to install the update..but again i already installed tons of app, being lazy to install those again..just give me 1 reboot then will reset again to factory and install the ota..pwede b mag tagalog nose bleed nko lol
Thanks

Just use Google Translate if you're having difficulty. This is an international forum so it's frowned upon to speak in a local language. Also, it's a rule and might get you reprimanded if you're reported to a moderator or a moderator just happens to be browsing this thread. If you experience a reboot or any problem, do a factory reset. After, if you still experience it, claim warranty since I would reason that that's already a hardware problem. Also forward me the last_kmsg if you can. If you're not familiar, just Google it as there are plenty of guides out there and I'm not too keen in replicating what I consider an already extremely redundant information. :silly:

So you are conceding that it is hardware related? I wish they charged an extra 50 dollars and made better quality control My previous experience with my first nexus was utterly disappointing. I really hope I don't get a lemon this time around.
Is the wifi issue really there or grossly exaggerated?

The reboot thing could be hardware related. The others could also be hardware related but, from what I've read so far, it could just be fixed through software. I'm more concerned that the reboot could be memory related so it would be very difficult to address via software.

I think it's just ridiculous that Facebook developers think asking for thanks much permission just for a social network app is ok/acceptable!!
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Heh... This reminds me of that South Park episode. Apple and the human centipede.
I used to never pay attention to permissions...but after seeing this it is ridiculous. I'm installing xprivacy as we speak. But imagine all the data that they get from people who don't root or use privacy tools on their phones??

if u ever get ur identity stolen by them u could easily sue them..i dont think a multimillion dollar company would want to go bankrupt for committing frauds
they are making multi million from users data... so you have to take care of your own privacy
installing xprivacy now ... thanks to those who suggested this app
Hrmmm, so let me get this straight...
**Runs automatically at startup
**Can open internet connectivity at will without user consent
**Can download files at will without user consent
...isn't that malware (by definition)?
I have mandated that my wife uninstall that bloated POS FB app since a few months ago when the permissions started getting bad... but this update takes the cake! I'm telling everyone I know to just use FB through a web browser!
Thanks OP
I'm going to give tinfoil a try.
It is essentially a "pretty wrapper" as the dev puts it for the facebook mobile site. Thanks for the post OP, I hadn't thought about what permissions the FB app was using with the latest update, I need to pay more attention.
If anyone wants the Facebook app before the latest (the one without all the permissions) its here - https://mega.co.nz/#!50l2mArA!cfLEwuLOT7-72Cknq3M4hAJtHAMWXxqK7P0X-tiBEDs

Tin foil hats anyone?
Seriously, fair enough if you want to worry about this but I personally couldn't give a toss. I have an unlimited data plan so if it wants to turn my WiFi off (which it NEVER has) then go for it. If they want to read my SMS, go right ahead seeing I get about one a week!
If you're not happy about it, don't use Facebook at all
Xprivacy doesn't work on ART
It's the sending emails without user knowing that seems questionable more than anything else to me

I can say with 100% certainty that it has not sent an email to anyone from my address to date cause if it did I'd have a copy on my laptop when Outlook downloads my emails
It probably hasn't to anyone to be fair but why request those ridiculous permissions

Then why is the permission there? If it does not use it why did they added it there?
And when they didnt use the permission till now it doesnt mean they will not use it in the future.
The only way is not xprivacy...
Take care of your data and do not install crappy apps... If all users accept such behaviour, there won't be changes... You are responsible for your data....

I don't know and, to be honest, don't really care. My data is everywhere these days and unless it affects me monetarily I'm not concerned. If I was concerned I wouldn't have smartphone at all

Exactly.... 5 updates down the line they won't need to ask permission as you already granted it and forgot about it by then

Unlocked BL's Future

Looks like S5 will have locked bootloader on T-Mobile..
So that means people on AT&T are screwed because
1. No Dev edition
2. Can't Use T-Mobile edition on AT&T anymore.
Only Sprint S5 will have unlocked bootloader.
In a sense this a good thing because it will bring more devs to the scene from T-Mobile's section and we can finally crack this open.

I give up on Samsung. My next phone is not Samsung. Im sick of these damn locked bootloaders.
I hear you. Its the carriers that are being dicks. Looks likes Safestrap is going to be mainstream @Hashcode got long hours ahead of him
The only way we can make them listen is not to buy them. Buy an international unlocked edition. But the majority of people have no interest in rooting and roming. I don't blame them due to warranty claims for bricked devices, but they should have something like htc dev where you unlock it you own it unless it's something unrelated to rooting. That is acceptable to me.

Safestrap is fine for me. It's a custom recovery as far as I'm concerned. I don't use the extra rom slots, just the stock one so it works for me the same as having an unlocked bootloader. I never usually flashed too many kernels always so that doesn't bother me. We can do backups restores and flash roms. What more could you want?

Battery optimized kernels. (For instance look at teamsek's N3 kernel. ~10 hours of screen on time. On asop, albeit).
Don't just blame att. Blame Samsung for allowing it to happen.

Either way it's us who pay the price.
Well I wouldn't even have rooted or installed a custom rom had they released a phone with a broken GPS that they couldn't or wouldn't fix. Ridiculous. Custom rom fixed it.

Yeah, sucks big time. I guess we need to change from Samsung to another brand, my Note 3 is a beautiful and powerful device the only thing that is keeping the leash is the locked bootloader. I'm considering to go with a Nexus or Sony smartphone, I love how I'm able to do whatever I want with my Nexus 7 2013.
If its similar to the S4, you could also look into the Canadian carriers' S5 and Note 3/4. The i337m (m for Canada and some Latin countries) had an unlocked bootloader. It was the same exact device as AT&T's just with an unlocked bootloader and ever SLOWER official ROM updates.

Just bought a Nexus 7 2013, unlocked the bootloader loader and rooted, just because! Nexus will need to put out a phone that's at least 5.5". When they do I'm on it! And it could have a crappy camera!

Yeah, what i love about my note 3 and even my old S4 was the ability to use the ir emitter to control my tv, etc. and well some other cool features like the airview, the s-note, etc.
They should make a dev edition of the phone with multi-carrier support like a (T-mobile/ATT GSM) or a (Verizon/Sprint CDMA) version. In that way they keep the people and devs happy.
I done with Samsung had a cappy,infuse,s3,now n3. I have been looking for a new device for a few months, can not stand the locked bootloader crap.
Nexus devices need bigger screens and better cameras if they fix that I would be happy as a clam.
Till then I will wait for something with a nice screen, camera, and unlocked BL!!!!!!

I wish Carriers here in US were selling Sony's flagship devices.
And also Nokia shoot themselves in foot by going with WP.... If they would've went with Android, they could've been the biggest rival for sammy.
Really what difference does an unlocked boot loader make? I'll gladly trade camera, screen, everything if it means no flashing crap AOKP Roms.

I don't think the carriers care about XDAers. We are such a small portion of the end users, but bricked devices from this forum are probably responsible for a significant portion of the returns.

Not too impressive, I've seen people here hit close to that on stock unrooted. I've gone 2.5 days with 8 hours screen time, so custom kernel doesn't seem to make that much of a difference here.
