[Q] Stuck rooting - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all
Ok so here's the problem that I would love some help with.
I have a Samsung Galaxy s4 I9500 and its android version 4.2.2 and I decided to look into rooting my phone a month ago because I'm sick of my phone saying I have no storage space when I keep on deleting everything and have only a few apps left n pics left on my phone even though my 32gb sd card isnt full (ive tried moving my photos there and it wont let me-so i decided to try and root). So last month i followed a few different ways to root it- I have an apple macbook pro and used one way through terminal which told me i failed (so i did the about device push that button 7x thing and then ticked usb debugging) so then i tried the cf-auto root thing which didnt work because (Odin) it comes up in random letters and shapes in a doc which I obviously don't understand and so cannot root that way. I tried to download 4shared but it comes back to my initial problem of having no space on my phone
2 apps i downloaded in an attempt for rooting include superuser and titanium backup- both of which i dont know what they do or how to use them (thinking they are hopeless unless its rooted).
Another random bit of info- this phone was purchased online by my friend on that cheap website kogan.
Please help- I really dont want to lose any of my data/apps etc
Thanks

Try Jodin 3 for mac see if it works..https://builds.casual-dev.com/jodin3/

Should you really be messing with this if you can't tell the difference between a mac and a windows program? For the storage space problem you're better off backing up what you want to keep then factory reset your phone. Your memory card might be fake too what make is it?

I was more talking to OP who was wondering why odin.exe opened as a text file on his mac.
Heimdall is cross platform isn't it?

Yup heimdall is cross platform. ..but some people leave some steps of using it I think.so they r not able to use it..for some people it doesn't work.. I have tried Jodin on two macs it works flawless..can't say about heimdall cuz I have not tried it yet..

[HOWTO] Is Anyone Rooting There Samsung Intercept..?

Hello all..! Love xda..! Love the forums. This is my first post, but long time reader and user of xda. One Question. Is anyone going or have rooted the samsung intercept. Ive checked out sdx and havent really seen much. Just wondering to see if keeping my wifes phone is worth it or just trash it and get something that I can root for her...Thanks in advance..!
"Bill"
ROOT for intercept
xda doent have a page yet but you can find the how to here
http://forum.sdx-developers.com/int...-build-7-for-the-intercept/msg79742/#msg79742
there seems to be no stable recovery yet from what i read. apperantly wiping cache or something bricks the intercept.
is this true?
i want to root my brothers virgin mobile intercept but cant really find a great how to... nor can i find any 2.2 roms.
i met a guy who works at best buy who was actually rooted, he had a live wallpaper running. but he was no help and wanted to charge my brother 100$ for root.
i have rooted well over 70 different phones since my g1 days, and i have always done it for free. appreantly karma didnt have my back that day.
after politely telling the gentleman to fk off, i began researching. hence why i am so confused, so many people advise to use z4, super one click and many others advise and warn against it.
i myself am glad to see this forum here. hopefully we can get some concrete info stickied soon.
I sent you a PM with the link for the rooting tool. I cant post links, I'm a newbie in this forum. Hope that will help you. Please could you post the info and link.
Regards
I rooted my girlfriend's Intercept successfully. The only thing she's used though is wifi tethering with Barnacle Legacy, but that obviously means it's been rooted successfully. Here's the text from the SDX post I used (I think it's for Windows 7 only):
1. Download and install SWUpgrade for the moment from here (http://www6.sprint.com/downloads/samsung/executables/SamsungMoment_Update.exe),
then install LouZiffer's patch (https://docs.google.com/uc?id=0B1g2...ThjOTktODUzYTQwNWJhMGU3&export=download&hl=en).
2. Download the recovery file (http://www.sdx-downloads.com/devs/inxane/intercept/recoveryv14.tar)
and put it in C:\Program Files (Program Files (x86) if you are on 64 bit)\Samsung Electronics\SWUpgrade\Models\Binary.
DELETE THE FILE ALREADY IN THERE OR YOU MAY PERMA-BRICK YOUR INTERCEPT
3. Start your Intercept in Download Mode (Vol Dn + Camera + End) and plug it into the computer. Install the drivers...
4. Open SWUpgrade and walk through the steps.
5. Make the following folders on the SD card:
/sdx/updates
/sdx/zip
/sdx/backup
6. Put
inxane's kernel file: http://www.sdx-downloads.com/devs/inxane/intercept/inxane0381intercept.zip
in /sdx/zip folder created above
7. Now enter recovery mode (vol dn, talk, end) and select the install zip from sd card option.
8. Reboot and you are good to go.
I strongly advise against any ROM found on sdx. I've tried them all and none of them are even fully working. The one currently on my fiancees phone cannot turn off as holding the power button freezes the phone until the battery is pulled. I have not got SU to work with anything except root explorer and su keeps telling me a newer version is available when it's clearly not. The custom recovery can't even wipe without bricking the phone...
We need some experienced developers to take a crack at this. All the developers currently working on the Intercept are making progress and are getting better and better but right now all rooting is experimental and dangerous. I mean for gods sake, a wipe will brick your phone? WTF?
Hello forum,
I have had my intercept rooted and running basic ROM 1.7 since it became available it did take all day to get it to work right but after boot up and using the ROM manager premium to "fix permissions" i haven't had any issues as of yet

FYI - 1.7.1 is out, but I don't think its in the OP on sdx.
sdx roms after rooting
I have used ubuntdroid for my virgin mobile intercept since it came out, fantastic rom , reminds me of cm mods.

As I understand, the recovery is a Samsung Moment recovery ported just to be able to flash ROMs. People have reported both - a wipe will brick, and a wipe will not brick. I'm going to -assume- that it depends on either sprint or vm. It is stated all over SDX-Developers that a wipe will brick.
The way I "wipe" is go into file browser on the custom recovery, select data, hit the MENU button, and hit delete. Same can be done for system, but not needed as the ROMs you flash will delete the /system partition anyways.
will there be some way to do it the z4root way ever?
Just posted the easiest way to root your Intercept in this forum.
Yeah, our recovery was ported from the moment. Its not able to do half the things that it should be able to do. You could brick your phone by doing a wipe, and many functions might report an error when you attempt them.
ok i have been having ALOT of trouble...i apreciate anyone in advance if they can help me...I DO NOT RUN WINDOWS UNLESS I HAVE TO, i have a dual boot of windows vista and linux mint 10. i am trying to root my virgin mobile samsung intercept. every way i have tried seems like it just wont work. i logged into my windows vista and read up on the super one click root. when i went to DL the drivers it came back with a message that said my processor is incompatible..i just dont understand how when i have a intel core 2 duo...i am wanting to avoid using windows so if anyone can help with linux mint 10 then PLEASE AND THANK YOU!
Well I did a factory restore of my phone and it did brick my phone but i restored the backup and the phone works like a champ again. Rooted with squealjoy. The only problem I have faced so far is the music skipping in the mp3 payer but I can live with that for free tethering.

Hello Forum!
I successfully rooted my phone about two weeks ago, just to have 'live wallpaper' on it. (It works but it's a little slow.)
The problem that I've noticed that I'm having now is the delay time of sound. For instance, when I'm playing a video or even a game, the sound is late and off cue. Is this an issue from rooting the phone, or is it deriving from somewhere else?
It's not a BIG problem, but it's getting very annoying and would like it resolved soon. Any advice would be helpful.

Z4root works for me on VM Intercept 2.1, well enough to let me run Barnacle for tethering, which is all I need root for at the moment. VM Intercepts get 2.2 in about a month, should make it easier to root and/or tether.
How can i root my sprint intercept, it has froyo and i want custom recovery.
Also what is the fastest rom????

Because my computer is windows 7 x64 and it sucks with drivers etc. (i can't get keis to work if my life depended on it) and so i can only assume I will have issues "flashing" and stuff. Plus I don't wanna void my warrenty
I just want to root my i9000m 2.1 phone - that's it - it shouldn't be too hard but apparently it is hence my $10 donation to anyone who can help me

im using win 7 x64 and its all running well i think rooting will also void ur warranty o.o
Make sure you've got the Samsung USB Drivers installed
Make sure you check allow usb dev in settings
open up super one click
connect your phone and you should be good to go...you probably don't have the mobile drivers isntalled
Heres the 64 bit drivers
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x64.shtml
My PC is windows 7 64bit and kies works fine + windows 7 is brilliant for drivers. Try flashing using Odin with stock 2.2 can be found easily with detailed instructions, just Google it. Then try rooting from there. Wouldn't worry about warranty, your making your phone work better. Have fun.

try reinstalling kies then running the link I sent you, it should work fine. I'm running 64bit windows and everythings works great for me.
some instructions for rooting
if it is possible to update ur phone with kies try to find your phone version and flash the pda with odin
link:CF-root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108
after that put the update.zip file on ur internal sd dont put it on external then im sure after u flashed it with that cf-root u can use do the 3 button trick just choose install update.zip on the menu apply it twice then u will have Clockwork mod now u can install any custom rom that u want
update.zip on attachment

Here's the question I have. If I completely uninstall everything, drivers, keis, etc. and then re-install Keis - I get thet MTP failed drivers error with windows.
So then I was told to install the Windows Samsung x64 bit drivers (which I do) -- but this doesn't work either.
Then I try to "reinstall drivers" from Keis - but this does nothing either.
Any and all combinations of the above has been tested and failed -- it just sits there "trying to connect" to device - but nothing ever happens, ever.
Keis is by far the stupidest program I've ever come across - how can it possibly not work right out of the box ? I have seem hundreds of people in my case - there is no excuse for such ****ty software.
Heres the thing - I want to flash, but I want to back up all my apps and stuff first, which I can't do without ROOT
Don't get me wrong, I'm going to flash away, but not until I back up all my apps - Titanium requires ROOT which is why I am here... i need to figure out a way to root so I can back up my stuff (i have like 160 apps I don't want to re-download)
Any ideas on how to back up apps WITHOUT needing to root ?

If you flash clockwork mod recovery or a kernel that incorporates it then you can backup and restore your apps in /data from there
Hope this helps!

Ok well forget using keis and just try flashing with Odin. Make sure keis isn't open when you do this though. You will have to put the phone in to download mode to flash it with Odin. Or if you don't want to mess about with Odin make sure USB debugging is off and try using the other USB setting like mass storage then it wont go through keis when you connect it. Hope this helps

[Q] help in re-rooting phone

Can anyone please help?
I have a Samsung Note 3 SM- n9005 Jellybean 4.3
I successfully rooted the phone about 7 months ago with odin
I tried to run game-cheats I think it was called about 2 months ago and it said it didnt have root privileges and wouldnt find or change the coin values in some games i wanted to play around with. I know i can use modded games and I know how to find "coin/RP etc. value" and change the number that way.
I talked to a technician in a local phone shop and he advised me that the root had not been installed properly. To un-root phone and then re-root it.
I think it was superSU? I had and I pressed the permanent un-root.
I tried to use the same tar file to re-root phone and it boot-looped (SE-android not enforcing caper). which I fixed after searching through the forums for answers
I was very careful to get the correct 4.3 tar file and not the 4.4 file. I have downloaded the file 2 or 3 times and it still bootloops but says PASS.
I have installed CWM.
I have tried to re root phone with Kingo (making sure KIES is turned off), which says phone rooted successfully(but root checker says its not rooted), I then tried framaroot apk, Vroot, rootgenius and another program. (all saying its a tough phone and it cant be rooted)
Why cant the phone be re-rooted?
Has the permanent unroot with superSU done exactly that?
Will getting rid of the bootloop with a recovery tar unroot the phone?
why is odin bootlooping the phone? (I have used the latest odin and I have also tried earlier versions as suggested in some forums)
If I do a factory reset will that be sufficient to allow me to root the phone again?
If I get the official 4.3 quallcom firmware and install that will it let me root the phone again?
if I update to KitKat 4.4 will that let me re-root?
Could I be having troubles because Knox has been tripped?
Im not really worried if I hardbrick the phone, ill just get another one, but im stubborn and I dont really want to let it beat me.
If possible could the reply not be to technical all I really want to do is understand whats happening/what I have done
Then What can I do to re-root the phone? because if what has to be done is to technical it would be easier to get a new phone and start again

Have u tried to update supersu from playstore?
if yes and it is still not rooted, try to flash stock firmware as advise, boot into stock recovery after that and do full wipe/factory reset.
after that u shld be able to root.
pls note wiping in srock recovery will erase all ur internal storage.

sammobile seems a ?
hi thanks.
I have tried about 10 times now after opening up an account, to download file from sammobile going to firmware and typing model getting to note 3LTE Telstra model the file wont unzip. What have you got to pay to get a zip that will unzip??? I have just downloaded another zip program both saying errors inside zip
is there any other place that would likely have the telstra file i need?
yes i tried updating SuperSU and it wont update. Reading up on the problem which seems common the answer requires me to copy zip files to sd card and then unzip them inside CWM its now starting to get too technical for me which is why I have started asking you guys questions. I have tried SU update fixer, nothing. and the equivalent for Superuser ,they wont update. Over the last month I have tried uninstalling ,deleting and wiping cache and wiping delvek cache with CWM.
some where inside CWM it said something about press this to root phone what is that for ? or has that to do more with zip files?
and yes I know i can do a factory reset and yesterday i bought an sd card to transfer the game data etc to.
how come using APPMGR111 and APP2sdand they say apps can be transferred to sd card(My sim card) which is much to small to accommodate all the apps but cant be transfered to External card (32 gb card bought yesterday morning) so do I need to do something silly like formatting external SD
Oh, If its important I am only interested in using the phone as a media and game playing device and as such i have turned off the sim card but left it in the phone and transfered the phone number to another simcard and given it to my wife for her S2 which uses a larger card. I just access google play etc through wifi.
also, i have tried using different cables as well as different USB ports, but do you think another computer??? completely. I go back to work next week so anything like that has to be done over the next couple of days while I am home.
And I was told in the shop yesterday when I bought the sd card to tap android version several times because sometimes what you can see (4.3) is different for some reason but it just has a picture of a Jellybean and says 4.3 (the man said here it might say 4.2.1)
will I have to flash stock firmware first? or can i just go strait to factory reset, if I have to go down that road. If so then I wont need to worry about Sammobile and the unzippable file????? I can just do the factory reset strait from CWM?? Or doesnt it work like that??

how come using APPMGR111 and APP2sdand they say apps can be transferred to sd card(My sim card) which is much to small to accommodate all the apps but cant be transfered to External card (32 gb card bought yesterday morning) so do I need to do something silly like formatting external SD
Or doesnt it work like that??

the zip file from samfirmware.com is not flashable by cwm.
u have to unzip using any of the zip program, till u got the tar or md5 (i forgot ), then flash it from odin. there's instructions on the download page as well.
u can't unzip from cwm.
If u have tried to unzip from any pc software and still can't unzip, means u got a corrupted download.
the factory reset in cwm is different from the stock recovery.
Sent from somewhere under the sky, at the corner of this rounded earth.
sorry missunderstanding
didnt try to use CWM for flashing am using Odin but zip file wont open to access tar file for odin.
That is what I thought the file I am trying to open is corrupted. My question was, seeing as how the file is corrupted is there anywhere else that I can get the file other than sammobile?
mmmm ok thanks then please just for interest what is the root button for inside CWM?
Sorry my questions do jump around a bit
I also read that nobody has found a way to access the built in recovery mode of note smn9005
that is why we have to use programs like CWM-recovery??
the other coment about factory reset. So georgesmh comment about flashing cf-autoroot. Seeing as how file is corrupted and if I cant get a copy from another source. all I have to do to factory reset is hit that particular button inside CWM? is that correct?
and i think I have an answer for my other question about the sd card the answer is No I cant save the games to the sd card I have lost them if I do a fActory reset. The only way to seems to be is to have a phone that is already rooted to use titanium something or other.
Thats alright really I had fun with the games before and it would be fun to do it again.
doing a factory reset is there any chance I can brick the phone?

this one I don't understand
but, to root with CF-autoroot, you don't need CWM. you only need the correct file for your device and for your firmware from CF-autoroot thread, and flash it through ODIN PC at PDA / AP tab in device download mode.

this one also I'm not quite understand your question
what do you mean by access the built in recovery ?
in N9005, stock (built in) recovery is used for doing factory reset (mainly and mostly), to have a clean internal storage, you have to do factory reset (full wiping - system/data/cache) from stock recovery.
Stock recovery can be used to flash zip files as well, BUT, only those are being digitally signed by Samsung can be flashed here. Otherwise, it won't flash.
Most of custom-ROM, custom-Kernel, custom-MOD, custom-Themes are not digitally signed by Samsung, because this is a 3rd party developers' products (here in XDA, and maybe from other forums). Therefore, to flash these type of zip files, you will need a custom recovery (CWM, Philz touch CWM, or TWRP).

Factory reset, in builtin (stock) recovery, WON'T delete anything on your external SD card. ONLY your internal storage
So if you need a backup of anything, do the one you store inside internal storage.

If you flashed a correct firmware for your device, and doin the factory reset from inside stock recovery, I never heard got ppl can brick the phone by doing this.
This brick thing only happen earlier on Note 1 (due to emmc brick bugs), but not on Note 2 and note 3.
I might be misunderstood of your questions
Sorry if I ever did that

Apps on SD

Hi!
I bougth a Tab A T550. I already rooted it but can't find how to put apps on SD. I don't know if it's because of root or it was "as it" when bought because I didn't try it before. My last tablet was able to let me change apps to SD from the same apps config but this one hasn't the option. Is this an error or a change on MarsMallow?
I also tried to use App Master, but it closes just on opening, don't know why. Not compatible with MM?
Thanks!

Ok! I found it on Google (as usual ). But other devices had internal and external SD. I understand the internal was a partition but, where? Inside the device mem? Or on the SD? First option seems stupid so must be second. And why change a way that lets you choose where to put apps and data? I was comfortable by choosing by myself where to store each thing...
The internal SD is nothing but a partition of the flash rom the T550 uses. If you want the external SD to be used as a flash card you can use as a sepearte, removable storage, you have to modify a file in your system folder. This of course means your device needs to be rooted. If you know how to root your Tab A6, I will post a way to give your wanted applications read and write access to the external. I have to warn you though, that the development on the T550 has not advanced very much yet because of the brand (Samsung) trying to make their devices exclusive and the new processor architecture. I have found only one way to root the device in a stable way but that makes it impossible to backup and recover my current configuration. TWRP wasn't able to break the encryption of the DATA partition which holds the specific user settings and personal data.

I already rooted my tablet (In fact, I said on my first post). Even when Adaway app says it's not rooted! :silly: But one another adblocker app works correctly so I don't know what to believe. At least, with root explorer I can see folders locked before rooting...
Well. i had it working with the DM13 on my Tab 2. But I tested it on the Tab A and it doesn't seem to work that way anymore...
Still tweaking I am.
What is DM13?
Sorry, I meant CM13 (CyanogenMod)

For this problem's solution, use Root Essentials from the Google Play Store and give it root access. Then look through the app until you see adoptable storage. After you go to that button, press adopt to internal if you want more storage for the phone (computers cannot access the sd card anymore!). If you want to change back to making the SD Card being read for computers, go to that adoptable storage page and press migrate. Your GBs or MBs should be back to normal on the SD Card.
Hope I helped.

I take note of your advice, but I'm not sure of liking this "adopting" mode.
I also am not sure if this tab is doing well. The screen needs to be more or less al 25% of bright to be able to look at it without "eyeache". Too bright in white! And more in the center of the screen than in corners which show a little gray (just a little, but it makes me feel as I was looking at a curve screen).
I'm very disappointed because my old tab is just it: old. And battery drains easy. But I prefer it to anyone sold today! :crying: I love it and I'm right doing it, because it's a Galaxy Tab S, the best tab ever made, at least, to me. So, what can I do?
Sorry for explaining my personal drama, but I'm getting really mad with all this...

If your device is rooted, and you want it to have the latest updates, download Samsung Smart Switch on your Windows PC. Reply back if you want to hear the full advice to change back to stock rom when you sell it to anyone.
(Nobody wants to buy a rooted tablet from the previous owner)

Don't know which latest updates you're referring to. And either don't understand which tablet you're talking about to sell.
I'm not yet sure if I'll return the tab A to seller (here we have 14d days of return policy) or not. Because buying an S2 is more expensive and I'm not sure this difference to be useful to me (taking apart the screen). Anyway, to be able to return the tab A, I already flashed the stock ROM. I didn't change the ROM when I rooted it, but rooting seems to break the possibility to make a factory reset, either from bootloader or from Android. So, I thank your try to help me but, as you can see, I already did it.
There are lots of things I don't know, but I've rooted all my Android devices, from first till now. And I even had an iPad 2 and jailbraked it. I'm a little bit freaky! LOL

Ok. Thanks for the clarification on that but, flashing a stock rom won't do anything. The device will still say Custom, not Official in the Status of the device. So, what I mean by the Samsung Smart Switch, is to download it on a Windows PC and open it up then go to Device Reinitialization in the More tab and then press the second tab in that, then put your device model number then the serial number. Give it Administrator access and then the latest updates should install and also the custom binary and custom device should turn back to official. (FLASHING STOCK FILES ON ODIN WON'T SOLVE ANYTHING! IT STILL VOIDS YOUR WARRANTY!! SO YOU GOT TO TURN IT BACK TO NORMAL BY USING SAMSUNG SMART SWITCH.)

Totally incorrect on several points.
Stock ODIN flashable firmware is official and does NOT void your warranty.
It WILL return your device back to official status and remove custom status.
The files downloaded via Smartswitch are identical.

True that, but I mean, if you want the latest updates and the newest kernel, etc. Then you might want to download the SmartSwitch waty. Let's say, you have a Lollipop rom and then you want a Marshmallow one for that device. Then it would be better to get it the Samsung SmartSwitch way because the Odin flashable version is not out yet.

They pretty much come out at the same time.
Sites like Sammobile download direct from Samsungs update server, same as Smartswitch connects to.
Release dates are usually posted with the firmware.

Ok, I can understand that but it takes forever for the person who wants to download that .tar file in order to get that Odin file. Plus, SmartSwitch can install the updates and files within 30 minutes without 8 hours of waiting. (I don't use money for websites such as FileGator, etc.)

The problem with Sammobile is that just this days is having problems with free downloads... But it's easy to find the same stock ROM anywhere in the net if you take the CSC code to Google. Isn't it so? I found it in this way...

Samsung Note 3 rooted, but is it safe to use in 2020?

Hi. I am not an experienced rooter, but I managed tp root my Samsung Note3 a few years ago using Odin and some files I found here on the XDA site. I haven't used it for a couple of years.
I now need a second phone purely for work and wonder if the phone is safe enough to use today. I keep hearing things about newer phones and security updates, and am fearful of using the phone in case it is unsafe in some way.
Also, I have deleted some programs the playing with it, and don't know if I have messed it up.
Can I flash the phone again, and will a new file reinstall the whole operating system?
I don't mind buying a new phone if I have to, but love the idea of making the phone do what I want it to do rather than being told how it can be used by the manufacturer. The trouble is, I'm not an expert, and am unsure what I am doing. I love the Note3 and would love to feel safe enough to use it with an email account without the fear of my data being stolen by hackers.
Any thoughts would be gratefully received, thanks.

Yes flash latest stock rom via Odin .

You're in luck.
The Galaxy Note 3 is fully supported on LineageOS. So, back up all your stuff, then use Heimdall or Odin to get TWRP (called the "recovery") installed on the machine. Then, download a copy of LineageOS as a ZIP file onto a little SD card and pop the card into the machine. Then, boot to TWRP and tell TWRP to install the nice new LineageOS. You can also install something called GApps which is all that Google infrastructure ****e too if you want. You'll find your phone up-to-date, secure and faster.
Hi archimime. I have managed to put two separate versions of lineageos onto an sd card and boot to the images. Both were one image at a time. On both occasions, I received a message saying:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
I have no idea what to do next. Any ideas would be appreciated.
I feel that I am so close to getting it to work again, but don't really know what I am doing here.
