Little Overwhelmed

I just bought g tablet. I need some help on where to start.
I read below to use Z4 root:

Is it necessary to set up ADB? Can I just use Z4 root?
Android police say next step would be installing ROM like
Cyanogen 6.1, TnT Lite or ZenPad. Which one can be recommended?
I'm not sure what all this means I just want to follow some instructions to get this tablet working better.
Is there a way to back up before I try this so I can go back?
Sorry for all the questions but this is very new to me.

Start with the FAQ area, in my signature. It has information / links on the alternate ROM's available. They are rooted already and can be installed using the device's own firmware update process.

A little comfort knowing I'm not alone but I want to get it working. I need a tablet this size with flash so I can watch my movie at work

I was the same way with roebeet and a few others u will be savy in no time.
Make sure u get clockeorkmod 1st installed.
Partition ur sdcard and back up frequently. You can't break this thing with those things in hand I promise.
Purchase root explore and titanium backup for the rest.

I assume I need to do root first, right?
Is there instruction somewhere for installing clockworkmod?
How do I partition the sdcard for this operation?

that video helped me greatly,now after doing this is there no return to the manufactures OS? And it is recommended to clear the cache and how is that done?

Yes you can reflash back to the original OS, like if you needed to return it or something. Once you experience something different I promise you wont want to go back

It is not a requirement to partition your card. I have not (at least not yet- unless forced to with a future rom) and have had the G for over a month now and went through all TnT versions.
Currently using TnT 2.20

The problem with the guide linked above (-http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245) is that I get stuck at step one. I simply cannot for whatever reason flash Clockwork Mod 0.8
It just gives me the giant EXCLAMATION MARK /!\ and doesn't do anything. I'm following the directions perfectly.
So is this an issue with hardware revisions or something? Because as far as I'm concerned this tablet is busted if the exact thing that works for all of you doesn't work for me.
EDIT: Finally found a different SD Card and it worked. Don't know why. The card that didn't work was a stock 1GB Sandisk, card that worked was a stock 512MB Sandisk. Weird.

You can install Clockwork and flash ROMs without rooting your tablet first. You also do NOT need an additional SDCARD in your device; I did ROMs several times before adding an SDCARD.
Your best bet is most likely TnT Lite, although VEGAn is fast becoming the best ROM available and it's still in beta.

The roms root for you, so no manual root process. Putting CW on has a bunch of advantages.
Clear cache, data and Dalvik cache
Back up entire current rom and restore with it if problems
Fix permissions
Boot into usb storage mode and access internal space, even if device will not boot up.
Break out of boot loops
No complete need for recovery folder
That is some of the main reasons it is prudent to install it. Life line

Having root on the device is akin to having superuser/administrator rights on your home computer. It is necessary to have for the system administrative type applications you may want to use (e.g., TitaniumBackup) to help backup and restore your data / applications.

ok at first i was just like you guys did not know how to flash any ROM, or how the tablet actually did it or the necessary files needed at the required location, first off when you first connect the tablet to your pc gotta choose turn "turn on usb storage" on tablet, than go to "my computer"(where you see all your hard-drives) and open the new storage from the tablet there you will see a bunch of files ".android_secure,.br, android" etc,etc, there also should be a Folder called "Recovery" which contains the actual command that tells the tablet to do an update. inside there should a file labeled "command" and when you open it with "notepad" it should say "update_package=SDCARD:/update.zip" this what is going to tell the tablet to put a new ROM when you do the power up holding the power and the vol. + buttons, once you verified the "recovery command" is there, copy your "update.zip" folder to the same area where you see all those other "android" and "recovery" folders after that, power down, do the power up holding the power and vol. + until you see that it is replacing the ROM

Finally got my gtablet working with TnT lite, Market, Flash After getting confidence in doing this I then root my phone(Droid Increible) and install wireless tether so I can connect my gtablet to my phone. Thanks to XDA and the great members!

I have to say this is a nice upgrade from what it was out of the box, but my issue is spending 4 hundo on something I have to mod myself to make it work, because as it is now I have voided the warranty by doing this. Any other suggestion on tablets that are better than this?

[Q] Help PLEASE!!

Okay first of all, let me start by saying this is my first post and I AM a noob, so be patient.
Okay, my problem is that I can't root my Sprint Samsung Intercept. I've tried SuperOneClick, Z4Root, Universal Androot, and some other one. NOTHING has worked. The SuperOneClick somewhat worked, it installed SuperUser but when I downloaded apps that require a root, they said my device isn't rooted.
I'm with Sprint and running 2.2.1.
Pease help because this is driving me crazy!!

i dont know how this stuff works either but my brother has that phone. it could be your usb isn't reading. or rather, your computer isn't recognizing the device. google samsung intercept usb and you'll see a lot of issues. this may not be your problem but its better to tell you just in case. so far for his cell phone, because he wants to tether it to his computer, so far nothing works. not downloading the right drivers. loading without debugging. mounting the sd card. thats one big solution that hasn't worked. i have high hopes for this other fix, to load samsung pc studio. New_PC_Studio_1.4.0.IL2_4.exe is the file. you can google and find it.
this site has some info. if it works and i remember to, ill repost and let you know.

intercept doesnt have many custom roms but there is tons of mods you can apply to the stock rom

did you patch SWUpgrade? delete everything in the binary folder except the file you were trying to flash?
ive never had a problem with it. it even saved me from quite a few softbricks in the short time ive had my intercept.

I did everything the videos and forums said to do. When I did that I got a different kernal but I couldn't get any service, my phone would restart every 2-5 minutes, and it would randomly vibrate. Until I got another one. I finally got SuperOneClick to get passed the "waiting for device" stage and I supposedy rooted my phone, when I tried to install apps that required root access they said my device is not rooted.

[Q] about to reset my phone

been having some problems with my phone lately and just wondered if anyone else has encountered these. first off it seems to stop playing any media files whatsoever. i have a bunch of music on it and the player just cycles through and says its not supported. youtube always brings up the error message that the video can not be played. i turn the phone off and on and it works after that but around 24 hours later i'm back to the same thing. also tried using kies to download the 2.2 update but that sucks and doesn't work. would like to root but have no idea where to begin and am afraid i'll screw the phone up. does anyone have an explanation as to what my problem can be and the best way to get 2.2 on this phone?

1st things 1st, Go to the noob guide by S15274N in the Gen section. It has all the info you need. Read it..........
Here is basically what you will do:
Make sure you have the Samsung USB drivers loaded on your computer (found in the noob guide)
Download superonclick to Root the phone (on to the computer)
On the phone download rom manager (from the apps store)
Follow the directions from superoneclick (look at unlockcr.com good how to video)
After you root the phone then decide what to load as far as a custom ROM. I would Try the Trigger or Axura, they both very stable Download on to the computer
Then hook up the phone on to the computer Make sure you connect the usb
(the pulldown at the top) make usb debugging is clicked.
Load the rom on to the Internal sd card and then go to the Rom manager and click reboot into into recovery.. install it wait 15 mins to install and you are good to go
READ the NOOB guide it is complete this is just an outline.

I'm having these same exact problams and it is very frustrating. Also the video recorder will stop working I found.
So you are using 2.1? I've gone up to 2.2 using kies. I can't remember when I went to 2.2, but my guess is this has been happening since then.
In the past week I've been on the phone way too long with Tmobile support. They say that they have never heard of this (apparently I'm not the only one though) and had me try a master reset. That didn't work and the only solution seems to be to reboot the phone. Am I the only one who thinks having to reboot within 24 hours is ridiculous?
So now that they have sent me 3 phones, they directed me to Samsung which wanted to try the same Master Reset. I know that will only temporarily fix the problem so the next step is to send the phone in. How is that suppose to work? Have no phone for a week.
I guess I could ask Tmobile to do it for me and give me a loaner, but I think it is time to go with a custom ROM.
So is anyone else having the problems we are having? We can't be the only two. Is the stock 2.2 just bad and I will be better served with a custom ROM?
I was hoping to avoid this, but the phone is pretty much crap to me now anyway, so I guess what can I lose?

IMO stock from samsung have never been very impressive especially when compared to all the custom roms out here. The simplest roms to flash will be the kb1 based roms such as Trigger, Axura or Bionix (in no particular order).
Your phone will feel completely different and you will likely gain a new found appreciation for it, so go flash a custom rom

Thanks for the advice. After reading through the steps and getting lost at only the 2nd step of rooting, I think I'll just stick to stock and deal with the problems.
Not ideal, but I'm just not in the mood to put that much into a phone anymore. Maybe I'm just lazy, but I'd like to have a program that will do all the steps of getting a new ROM on my device. I feel overwhelmed by having to maintain a ROM.

Its not as hard as you think. Just use superoneclick to get root access, download rom manager , download the rom you want on your sd then reboot into recovery from root manager and chose your rom from the sd.

New Bravo owner -- Tips and Tricks I learned so far

I picked up a Motorola Bravo to use as a secondary phone on ebay for a steal of a price and thought I would share some of my success / failures / tips I have learned so far.
Successes:
Rooting the phone this was very easy as I just followed other instructions on this forum.
1. Install Drivers from here: http://developer.motorola.com/docstools/USB_Drivers/ then reboot
2. Download and install latest SuperOneClick, unzip, plug in your phone, run the executable. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682 Click the ROOT button and let it do it's thing. I suggest letting it install busybox as well. **NOTE THIS VERSION DID NOT work for Allowing non market APPS***
Allow non market APPS: this was a bit more tricky
1. Install the same motorola drivers from rooting (if you didn't already)
2. Find SuperOneClickv1.5.5 -- Be careful .. some of the files I found triggered virus warnings. Failures:
I have not yet been able to completely disable MotoBLUR. I saw two different ways of doing this... one was to edit the build.prop and add the following lines:
ro.mot.deblur=true
ro.mot.setuptype=2
This didn't work, but I also wasn't sure how to clear the phone data/cache ... maybe in the recovery mode? Can anyone confirm this method works on the Motorola Bravo?
The second method I saw was to type eebluroff I am assuming after booting the phone for the first im after a factory data reset. I saw one post saying you should be able to do this by bringing up the keyboard on the screen where you select the system language. I was not able to get the keyboard to come up therefore I couldn't get this method to work.
Anyone else have any luck?
Finally I plan to try carrier unlocking the phone, enabling wifi tethering, and eventually try a ROM or two out.

I'll say this now. I have the bravo. I have T-Mobile service. Not at&t. All I did was call them and asked for the code. Very nice people there. Took me about 10 minutes total including going through menu prompts and holding time.

And Super One Click will unlock non-market apps. Just click root and let it go. Reboot your phone. Click Shell root and let it finish. THEN click the non-market button W/O rebooting!

i went through a lot of threads, a lil bit confused, this is my first android phone. im already in love with it.
my bravo is unlocked with code, running 2.2.1 froyo, i think its rooted but im not sure, there is market logo on the home screen, and it has the superuser icon too when i click on the circle to app page.
and it doesnt really lag a lot, its just not as snappy compare to my friend's iphone4. never wanted any apple products, they are way overpriced lol, i think with mod bravo should run really fast doe.
cm7 or miui is androind 2.3 right? is there any glitch after install it? what are the steps if i wanna install one of them

Installing Atrix-MROM on an Atrix 4G with 4.5.145 update.

Just incase anyone with an Atrix 4G and 4.5.145 firmware, I followed the instructions in the following threads to successfully install Atrix-MROM on a brand new Atrix 4G ATT with the latest update.

Rooting (step 2) is completely irrelevant and unnecessary. I've said this before. Still not sure why people constantly think rooting does anything if they're going to flash a new ROM anyway.

I think this is because, normally, they would need it to flash CWM. But it doesn't happen on Atrix. .

Yeah, that's pretty much what I thought. People scarred/traumatized by other brands/phones and thinking everything is the same on all the other ones.
Oh well. Hopefully they'll learn one day. Hopefully a little sooner than the Atrix REALLY becomes obsolete.

This is my first smart phone, and I am absolute noob in this field.
I have been using Nokia 1216 and similar monochrome display phones before it.

In that case, I gues you're actually doing quite well really... If you came from mono dumbphones straight to this and have already flashed a custom ROM, that's actually kinda impressive.

Well I finish yesterday to put all in order, only my contacts information I fail to restore.
The Go Backup didn't work.
One question, I don't installed the sv kernel, is necesary? because I feel that the battery it drain very quickly.
The rest appear so far to work very well, checking the holo launcher.

are you 100% sure everything on first post works with an ATRIX 4G 4.15.1455 from AT&T wiht the original motoblur?

Atrix 4g ATT 4.5.145 working well with CM 7.2
I have an Atrix 4g that was about to be retired or sold, and decided to instead make it an android project to learn about modding and possibly make something useful out of an old device.
After combing the forums on this site and others, realized there was some risk involved of a hard brick, but since this is not my main phone anymore, I wasnt too worried about. I'll share the results...
The phone was running gingerbread 2.3.6, ATT 4.5.145 build
#1) Root phone (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1769497)
Step 10 did generate an error for me, I had to issue the alternate command and it worked fine.
I downloaded root checker by JOEYKRIM on google play store to ensure it was rooted properly afterwards.
#2) Backup the phone in case of trouble (I used titanium backup from google play store, requires rooting from step 1)
Add a schedule to backup all and execute the schedule now. Pretty easy stuff
#3) Unlock bootloader (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1182871)
This is probably the most dangerous step. I used the link above and would like to add a few comments. The link above is a script written to automate the process for those not terribly familiar with the android tools ADB and fastboot. This script is capable of unlocking your bootloader, fixing some common problems that happen along the way, and installing clockworkmod so you can access android recovery mode to install custom ROMs. However, it seems to come with an older version of the clockworkmod, therefore I used it for the bootloader only (option 1 from main menu). I also had to execute option 3 afterwards as I did get the failure to boot 0x1000 error. Long story short.. I used option 1, then option 3 and skip the rest.
#4) PUSH ROM files of your choice to phone (I used Cryogenmod 7.2 latest from http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=olympus)
You should also copy any other addon ROMs of your choice to the phone at this time as well. Google store app is one that is not included with CM 7.2 and you can get here (make sure to pick the one for the version of CM you are choosing) http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Google_Apps
To push the files to your phone, simply boot your phone in the stock ROM, connect it to your PC with usb, and make sure the USB connection notification is set to USB mass storage. You can then copy the ROM files in zip form to the root directory of the drive letter of the phone from your PC just like you'd copy to a USB stick. Change the USB notification/communication mode on the phone back to stock setting of motorola phone app afterwards, as this dismounts the internal SDCARD storage and the phone wont remount it until you do.
This is out of order from some of the other guides. The reason to place the ROM files first before anything else, is so you can install clockworkmod to make recovery possible, then go right into it and install the ROMs from recovery mode. I had some issue with installing recovery with CWM first, then CWM not working if the phone booted into the stock rom (looks like the recovery was overwritten. I simply had to have the ROM files ready to go then do CWM all at once to make this work.
#5) Install CWM clockworkmod. (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_olympus#Installing_recovery_using_fastboot)
Follow the steps under installing recovery under fastboot. A link is provided for the latest CWM 5.0.2.0, which is what I used instead of the 4.0 version included in the unlock bootloader script mentioned in MY step 2.
At step 7, my phone appeared to hang at Flash boot: SOS. Some other users reported this as well. I just let the phone sit there for 3-5 minutes to make sure it was done with the operation. I then manually rebooted the phone holding down volume down button and holding power button until the phone powered down. If the phone is still connected to the PC, it will automatically power back on, so continue to hold the volume down until fastboot appears, then tapped volume down to cycle through the menu and chose Android recovery from the boot menu and press volume UP to execute it. CWM loaded up just fine and I was able to choose recovery ROMs we pushed in step #3 of my guide there and reboot.
Sorry if this is not as detailed as it could be, but I wrote this a bit after the fact without taking screenshots or writing down every step of the way. This is my best recollection of what I went through and figured I'd share as many consider this a gamble with the Atrix 4g and ATT 4.5.145.
Overall experience with the CM 7.2 ROM:
I've been running the phone for a bit now with cryogenmod 7.2 without issue. The battery life is fanastic and there are many nifty options included with CM 7.2 I have not experienced the random reboots or overheating some others have mentioned.
The only issues I've ran into so far, the latest youtube app from google store does not seem to play videos. You can install a QR code scanner app from google play store of your choice, then download the youtube app that worked for me via QR code from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18157961#post18157961

Step 10 did generate an error for me, I had to issue the alternate command and it worked fine.
I downloaded root checker by JOEYKRIM on google play store to ensure it was rooted properly afterwards.
#2) Backup the phone in case of trouble (I used titanium backup from google play store, requires rooting from step 1)
Add a schedule to backup all and execute the schedule now. Pretty easy stuff
#3) Unlock bootloader (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1182871)
This is probably the most dangerous step. I used the link above and would like to add a few comments. The link above is a script written to automate the process for those not terribly familiar with the android tools ADB and fastboot. This script is capable of unlocking your bootloader, fixing some common problems that happen along the way, and installing clockworkmod so you can access android recovery mode to install custom ROMs. However, it seems to come with an older version of the clockworkmod, therefore I used it for the bootloader only (option 1 from main menu). I also had to execute option 3 afterwards as I did get the failure to boot 0x1000 error. Long story short.. I used option 1, then option 3 and skip the rest.
#4) PUSH ROM files of your choice to phone (I used Cryogenmod 7.2 latest from http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=olympus)
You should also copy any other addon ROMs of your choice to the phone at this time as well. Google store app is one that is not included with CM 7.2 and you can get here (make sure to pick the one for the version of CM you are choosing) http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Google_Apps
To push the files to your phone, simply boot your phone in the stock ROM, connect it to your PC with usb, and make sure the USB connection notification is set to USB mass storage. You can then copy the ROM files in zip form to the root directory of the drive letter of the phone from your PC just like you'd copy to a USB stick. Change the USB notification/communication mode on the phone back to stock setting of motorola phone app afterwards, as this dismounts the internal SDCARD storage and the phone wont remount it until you do.
This is out of order from some of the other guides. The reason to place the ROM files first before anything else, is so you can install clockworkmod to make recovery possible, then go right into it and install the ROMs from recovery mode. I had some issue with installing recovery with CWM first, then CWM not working if the phone booted into the stock rom (looks like the recovery was overwritten. I simply had to have the ROM files ready to go then do CWM all at once to make this work.
#5) Install CWM clockworkmod. (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_olympus#Installing_recovery_using_fastboot)
Follow the steps under installing recovery under fastboot. A link is provided for the latest CWM 5.0.2.0, which is what I used instead of the 4.0 version included in the unlock bootloader script mentioned in MY step 2.
At step 7, my phone appeared to hang at Flash boot: SOS. Some other users reported this as well. I just let the phone sit there for 3-5 minutes to make sure it was done with the operation. I then manually rebooted the phone holding down volume down button and holding power button until the phone powered down. If the phone is still connected to the PC, it will automatically power back on, so continue to hold the volume down until fastboot appears, then tapped volume down to cycle through the menu and chose Android recovery from the boot menu and press volume UP to execute it. CWM loaded up just fine and I was able to choose recovery ROMs we pushed in step #3 of my guide there and reboot.
Sorry if this is not as detailed as it could be, but I wrote this a bit after the fact without taking screenshots or writing down every step of the way. This is my best recollection of what I went through and figured I'd share as many consider this a gamble with the Atrix 4g and ATT 4.5.145.
Overall experience with the CM 7.2 ROM:
I've been running the phone for a bit now with cryogenmod 7.2 without issue. The battery life is fanastic and there are many nifty options included with CM 7.2 I have not experienced the random reboots or overheating some others have mentioned.
The only issues I've ran into so far, the latest youtube app from google store does not seem to play videos. You can install a QR code scanner app from google play store of your choice, then download the youtube app that worked for me via QR code from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18157961#post18157961

Cwm 5.0.2.7 is the up to date recovery (possibly outdated now, see new 4.3.1 for recovery (haven't tried it out yet))
Everything you just posted has already been mentioned over several threads over the past 3 yrs. We all are well aware of these instructions, long before you essentially copied, pasted, and edited into your own words, that detail the process of rooting, unlocking the bootloader, flashing a custom recovery, and flashing a custom ROM.

The tone of your response implies that I'm trying to take some sort of credit for other people's work. The reason I posted is I've noticed some folks fairly recently with doubts about this process working specifically with this exact phone and ATT 4.5.145, and I wanted to share my experience and encourage others to do it if they were on the fence. I appreciate the work of this forum and other folks who have poured hours of time into these custom projects to make the android experience better.
I notice that you are a senior member. I'd suggest that replies are restricted on this forum to constructive responses, and not negative ones.

Actually it was more along the lines of you were repeating things that have been said already time and time again. That was the true meaning of my post. I do apologize if it may not have been conveyed in a manner that my intention clear.
Also, the recovery. I just flashed the new one from the new 4.3.1 thread. It is indeed an update, bringing it up to revision 6.0.4.6. This is a huge step forward and lays the groundwork for 4.4 (most kk roms require at a minimum cwm 6.0.4.4)

I notice you have an MB886, Atrix HD according to your signature. This thread is for the Atrix 4G. I'm not sure if you realized this. Maybe that is the reason why we are not seeing eye to eye. The Atrix 4g is older and is quirky and there have been many horror stories. I havn't seen many of those stories with the Atrix HD and things are more straight forward.

Ah, correct and incorrect my friend. While my signature may point out what device i am currently on, it does not reflect my past. A peice of supporting evidence is over in AtrICS v2.0 (see home button fix)
As far as cwm goes, cwm has unofficial builds as well. Look through one of the threads, it will point you to a link about recoveries and there does exist a 5.0.2.8. EDIT It was Romracer's recovery, accesed through the unlock bootloadrr thread a few threads down from this one. The 5.0.8.x i think was more like a 5.8.1.8, but i think that was a touch version? Now CM and the other threads may say the 5.x is ok for all of our roms, but as android moves forward, so must our support from libs, apps, kernels, scripts, and of course, recoveries. That is why i promoted the 6.0.4.6 revision both here and in the new 4.3.1 thread.
