Android 4.4.2 Camera Improvements - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi There.
I am thinking of buying a SIM-free Samsung Galaxy S4 phone. I currently reside in the UK and the last update i saw for the S4 (my wife had one until she sold it to a friend) was 4.2.2.
Now, I heard Android 4.2.2 is now live and available to (almost) everyone in the UK.
But, what i want to ask is about the camera. As someone who owned and have actually tried i can say that the S4 camera app itself is slower than the one on the S3 and the iPhone 5. I'm talking about opening/starting up the app and the shutter lag (i.e. pressing the camera shutter button and in-between shots).
Is there any mention on camera enhancements on the Android 4.4.2 for the galaxy S4?
Please advice. Thanks.

I just tried a test where my device will be inside the pocket and I have to take it out and take a pic.
My first shot took me exactly like 5.5 seconds starting from taking the device from pocket to firing up the first shot.In the next 4 seconds I was able to take
around 5-7 shots.
So basically , I was able to get around 7 shots within 10 seconds time frame.
In second test , I tried burst mode.It took me 7 seconds to start burst mode.By the end of 9th second , I got 30 shots.

Does doesn't tell me anything i'm afraid. My main question is did the Android 4.4.2 actually improved the speed of the camera of the galaxy S4?

No. This improvement will be added in the New Samsung Galaxy S5.

Everything is same as 4.3.The speed of shots , camera launch time etc.
If you want to compare against 4.2 , only improvement is camera launch time which is reduced from 6-7 seconds to 3 seconds.

Well, think twice before you get it if you care on camera, the S4 its a good phone overall but... look at my POST

I've seen your post and it does confirm what i'm fearing that...the camera is slow to start and shutter lag is awfully slow.
So, why Samsung came up with the 4.4.2 update for the S4 with only "incremental" improvements in the first place?
Camera issues like slowness and sluggishness especially the shutter lag leaves me wondering why it wasn't updated.
If i'm too worried about camera startup and zero shutter lag what Android phone should i be looking at?

[Q] Worth update from galaxy note 1 n7000?

Hi,
I'm just wondering if anybody here come from a galaxy note 1, and if yes, if thinks the update was worth it or not.
Thanks!
I came from a note 3.
Will not really. My wife has a note 3 and I had to help her get it setup and I couldn't wait to not have to mess with it any longer. ?
This is a refresh for a Samsung user. Give it a try for a week, you'll love it.

I went from i717 (ATT Note 1) and the G2 is much faster, battery life is much better.
The screen is more narrow, but almost the same height. I moved everything from my Note to the G2 and found some things were a bit squished or had to remove a column on the G2 but day to day use it's fine, and probably a little easier to use.
The buttons are really dumb, but the G2's "knock" on feature (tap twice on the screen to wake it) works good and I never use the power button. I've rarely messed with volume buttons, I let Tasker manage that for me.
Camera is much better, although I am having problems with any kind of close up being out of focus and if using flash, the picture being blown out. But that might be strictly an AOSP camera issue, and I'm talking 4-5 inches from the camera, normal distances are fine.
As as I mentioned, battery life is insanely better. I've gotten 60 hours off the charger at home on wifi with about 70 minutes screen-on time and yesterday at work at noon instead of the Note being around 65% at lunch time the G2 was at 92%.
It's a massive upgrade spec-wise and it's cheap if you have an upgrade available. Otherwise, you might look at the Nexus 5, it's very similar.
I think that if you are happy whit your phone it doesn´t whorth it.
But if you want to change hell yeah.
People are changing their Note 3 for this and fell happy about it, i suppose with the Note it will be even better.
At this point I would wait to see what's about to drop in the next couple points

Former Galaxy / Note lover....
I have used almost every generation Samsung device.
- Epic 4G
- Galaxy 2
- Galaxy 3
- Galaxy Note 2
- Galaxy Note 3
I finally got sick of touchwiz and a bunch of other stuff not worth mentioning and leaped for the LG G2 (T-Mobile)
I believe this phone is far more superior than the Note 3 in every way. AMAZING battery life, beautiful IPS display, the slim design for being a 5" screen, 13MP Cam w/ OIS, and for those camera enthusiasts.... MANUAL FOCUS !
When I found out this camera had a Manual Focus option, I was blown away.......
Get this phone, you won't regret it.

I had a S3 i747 and I was pretty satisfied with it, I had it with CM11 and just love it badly and think that an S4 upgrade will be unnecesary because I didn't see why the people get excited when it was first launched.
Recently I had the oportunity of hold a S4 in my hands and I see that is not larger than a S3 and I liked so much its design, the size of the LED button, its screen size and the quadcore procesosr improvement also was good so I decide to go for a S4. I bought a second hand i337m S4 for about US 300 after sold my i747 in about US 250 so it was a no thinking situation for me. I haven't noticed any annoying bug on stock rom, the camera app was pretty cool with plenty of effects and WatchOn app was great to control your TV. I'm a hardened CM fan so I can't wait to see it on my cellphone so I installed it and so far (I have CM for about 5 days now) the only bug I have see is that while the phone is charging, you can't power on the cellphone (you just have to disconnect it and power on, not a big deal), for TV control I use Peel Smart Remote App and it works just as good as Samsung's app
In conclusion: I would say that if you feel good with your S3 you have no particular need for buy a S4 (probably get the same experience with some improvements) but if you have the oportunity of upgrade at a good price, then go for it

Hi,
some users have problems with Kitkat and some don't.
In general custom roms are running better than the original system. My guess. I'm very satisfied with S4 developed custom roms
It is your choice. There aren't any big hardware changes except full HD screen and camera quality.

I had S3 and I have now S4 (i9500) with Kitkat update, S4 have 2 GB Memory (S3 only 1 GB) & it is more smooth than S3, S4 also doesn't lag as much as S3 do.
in general S4 is a nice update for your current S3, but if you want my advice try to get S5, the screen in S5 is way more accurate and better than S4 screen, the battery also is more powerful.
it depends on how much you are ready to pay $.
Hi i also upgraded from s3 to s4 last October, i would. Recommend You to upgrade to s4 as it is a really good and compact device with 1080p display and thin bezels, unlike the ugly s5 which isn't compact.

Lollipop is the only reason

I was wondering How many people are buying nexus 6 because of lollipop? I for one am.
Imagine for a moment if Note 4 also came with pure lollipop with no crappy touchwiz which would you buy? I didn't think i would say this but i would buy note 4 and I hate samsung because of plastic and touchwiz.
Galaxy Note 4 hardware wise is far superior in almost every dept, better camera, LED notification, S Pen, better and brighter screen, better design, finger print, sd card.
Speakers would definetly go to Nexus 6 and bigger screen butnot better screen.
Biggest let down on note 4 TOUCHWIZ which is a complete put off.
I've been waiting for nexus 6 for a little while now and have bought Note 4 recently which actually is better then i expected and does look premium and if i was to remove the dreaded TOUCHWIZ it's a very appealing phone. Now i'm considering waiting for custom roms rather then buy nexus 6!!! Or can someone convince me otherwise, perhaps i've missed some nexus pro's.
Aosp roms on the note 3 were not reliable. I expect the same for the note 4.
I've never liked the samsung cameras... my s4 and note 3 had TERRIBLE autofocus. I also didn't like the way it processed pictures. For the most part, I want a decent camera but I dont need an amazing camera.
If software were the same, (no touchwiz), I still think the nexus 6 looks better, has dual front facing speakers, and a larger screen.

hmm..that's a good point But surely lollipop would be fine.
I'm getting one because of the development potential. Also it will be my first nexus (2nd Motorola). Currently am on LG G3. That will now go to the wife, since she loves the camera.

The camera autofocus works brilliantly on the note 4 much improved, it's probably the best phone camera out there. Better then iphone and xperia z3.
I would definitely buy a Note 4 if it didn't have TouchWiz. IMO, TouchWiz is very ugly, cluttered, and drags the performance down to an unacceptable level. I have used every Galaxy S and Note extensively, but I have not bought a phone from Samsung since the S2.

interesting... maybe im just not a fan of the way samsung processes images but I understand the tech behind the AF system it uses so it should be reallly good. As much as it pains me to say, I have yet to see an android take better pictures than the equivalent iphone of the time.

Having owned iphone 6 plus inmho the camera on Note 4 is superior in most conditions.
I would've definitely bought a Note 4 if Samsung found a way to implement some of their features into Stock Android. They've done a great job with hardware now they need to focus on optimizing software. Samsung is supposedly starting over next year & I look forward to see what the Galaxy S 6 & Note 5 will bring
If you're on VZW there is a Dev edition note 4. I'm sure there will be AOSP Roms available for it soon.

Yes got to give the larger screen and better speakers to Nexus, however most reviewers are saying note 4 screen is sharper and brighter.
Lollipop is definitely the only reason not the phone hardware itself.

I hear you man, i think samsung need to otherwise they risk losing more customers.
Similar hw specs leave me hopeful for increased development and AOSP stability on Note 4.
I would get the N4 solely because the screen quality. It blew me away first time I saw it. Nothing, nothing comes close.
But can't do TW, no no no. That's how much I hate it.

I was thinking the same thing.
I like some features of TW. But it is overbearing and slows down the device. I was really torn between the two phones. I have always liked the bigger phones. When I heard the new Nexus device was going to be a phablet I was already sold. Love the support the nexus devices get from devs. That's what makes it worth it for me.

Just bought a SM-N910c, now what?

Someone just made me an offer I couldn't refuse on a pre-owned N910c.
Right now, I have a rooted Note 3 running Alliance ROM & like it.
The main thing I like about my Note 3 is the camera/video recording. I know the Note 4 offers a better camera, but will I lose any of the features that I have currently have with mine?
Marshmallow did arrive for the Note 4, didn't it?
Also, I know the Note 4 has known issues, but was that mainly the U.S. variants?
Thanks in advance for the help.
You should be happy that you have the N910C variant of the Note 4 rather than the N910F. As the N910F had a problem with overheating pretty easily due to the fact that it ran on the Snapdragon 805 SOC, which like with all Snapdragon SOCs have a tendency to run full throttle when doing anything. With regards to the camera quality of the N910C. I can honestly say it's probably the best camera sensor I have used in a mobile device. The 16MP ISOCELL sensor takes great shots and the video is pretty good. Just be sure to turn off HDR when filming on the N910C as HDR causes the video to be a bit shaky at times.
Marshmallow is available for all Note 4 variants however some carrier branded models still haven't received them yet.
Does the video portion still have slo-mo recording/playback & panorama for the camera?
Got the phone today. After connecting it to wi-fi, it immediately upgraded to 6.0.1.
If I rooted this to CM13, will I lose any functions, especially the camera or video?
No, you shouldn't But honestly I'd advise against installing a custom ROM and rooting your device unless you really have to. As if you aren't familiar with the process you could disable certain features of your device.
It doesn't appear to have the same camera modes as my Note 3.

Since this is the international version, it doesn't have the bloatware of those from U.S. carriers but it does have some I assume.
I'd like to experience the "true android experience", but don't want to lose any of the functionality of the phone.
