[Q] HELP! Network disconnects with data connection + extreme battery drain - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a 6 month old Nexus 4 running stock 4.4.2 and for the past 4 days or so it has been dropping its network every time i try to load a page on data (doesnt happen with wifi). it does this constantly until i try to reboot my phone, at which point, if my phone had 80% battery, it will refuse to turn back on unless im hooked up to my charger (and reads 0% battery). Im trying to narrow down the source of the issue, whether its a problem from my network provider or software or hardware. I did a fresh install of 4.4.2 last night and nothing seems to have changed. i also spoke to my network providor (mobinil egypt) and theyre telling me that theres no problem with my service from their end and my sim is only 2 months old and that im on the correct apn. It might be unrelated, but i did start using a mophie juice pack powerstation around the exact same time this issue started.
Any ideas?

I have the exact same problem on my nexus 4. Was about to post the same. Am also on 4.4.2. Please someone help with a fix !
Today my nexus went dead on 60% and when i plugged it to the charger it show 0% !

i took some screenshots of my battery stats in case that helps. It shows several network drops throughout the day. the battery died completely on me at approx 65% (and again it refused to turn back on at all until plugged in to a charger, and then surprisingly it showed 50%) i believe i was doing casual browsing on chrome at the time. It died again at 25% when i was trying to take a screenshot of my battery stats, and showed 0% when i got my hands on a charger

Have you tried to flash a different radio (a.k.a: baseband) to see whether that helps. Or try Jelly Bean ROM 4.3 to see if you still have problem with the network.

T-Mobile Wing Battery HUGE Drain When Radios OFF?

you guys are such geniuses here, maybe you can help me with this:
has anyone notice that on the TMOBILE WING, if you TURN OFF ALL RADIOS (phone, bluetooth, wifi) at night when you goto sleep (flight mode), battery at 100%, the next morning when you wake up the battery will be around 50-60%? ironically, if i leave my cellular radio on, the next morning the battery will be at 98% or 99% even 100%... does anyone know what is wrong? I've heard a few other users complain about this issue... this is a serious bug
call me paranoid but i rather have my phone off completely off at night, we get enough radiation from wifi, cellular, bluetooth daily already lol

cnet review had the same issue when they reviewed this phone a few months ago and they said it was a bug that should have been fixed already by wing's release date.

Most be something with just the wing. My Herald does not do this.

no i dont use that, t-mobile is sending me a new unit, i will see if it still does that....
got my new unit from tmobile today, funny thing, the wing and battery now both says MADE IN TAIWAN. the original one i got from tmobile 2 weeks ago is made in china, so was the battery. hopefully this is the cause will have to leave it overnight with the cellular radio, bluetooth and wifi all off to see if the battery still disappears
...if you use any push mail service (exchange, windows live), but disable the radio, your device is trying to connect to the mail service on and on and on. so if you use any of that services, make sure you disable them too in your comm manager settings as soon as you switch the radio stack off...

you make an excellent point! but i don't use any of those, the email i do have, is pop3 and i've set it to check email manually, meaning only when i click send/receive. i'll know if it's a software or hardware issue once i try this new replacement overnight with all the same apps installed as the previous one.
Having the same issue with my Wing
I ran a test last night, turned all radios off (flight mode showed on home)
Battery was at 99%. In the morning it was down to 56%. My wing battery is made in Taiwan, and the phone is made in China.
Are you still having the same problem with your replacement Wing?

Finally someone who has the same issue, now i know i'm not crazy! I just ran the test on my replacement wing, it still does the same thing!!! I woke up with only 54% battery remaining from 100%
1 thing i can eliminate is, this is definitely NOT caused by batterystatus plugin, it had this problem before i even installed that program.
my other none t-mobile included programs are:
skype
phatnotes
tcpmp player
thunderhawk browser
(none of those 4 programs are running in the background) and i went to sleep with a brand new soft-reset and made sure no programs were running in the background. i do however always have an alarm set to go off at 11am every day, but if this is what's draining the battery, then this phone is in some serious need for patching...
i'm seriously thinking this is a hardware issue or a system software bug, i think a lot of ppl don't notice cause they don't go into flight mode overnight since most of them don't care about cellular radiation lol i think 8-10hrs a night without cellphone radiation can only be a good thing, even if all the billion dollar profiting corporations that sells these things wants you to think it's safe
same thing happens to me, battery went from 100% to 50%ish overnight... this doesn't happen if you turn off all radios on your phone for only, say, 2 hours... weird thing... we need some experts of this forums to take a look at this issue, it's bugging me too

OK, so not really solved, but figured out what the problem probably is, and a workaround. It's definitely a bug in the way the application is written.
I think the logic the way it is now is something like this:
If phone app is turned off
"Signal object" reports no signal available
Problem is, the "search for and find signal" object is not told to stop looking! And so, it tries to find a signal all the time the phone is off, draining the battery.
To test this, I switched the phone from Automatic network to Manual. This is under "Comm, Settings, Phone, Network". In Manual mode, the battery does not drain.
Of course, being in Manual mode has its disadvantages if you are traveling through roam areas where T-mo is not the carrier.
I uninstalled the t-mobile hotspot login utility and with all radios off, went to sleep (battery at 92%) for about 8 hours, now the battery shows 91%... don't know if that program is the culprit of all this, will test again tonight.
if this don't work, then i wouldnt mind switching my network to manual when going to sleep then switching it back to auto when i wake up

have you actually TESTED this or are you just guessing? test your theory overnight and we'll see if this is the case, i don't think it is since this is a HTC phone and no other HTC phones have this issue, unless they somehow managed to mess up on this model :\

I can only agree with half of your statements. You are NOT the only one with this issue... but being crazy? You'll have to answer that one yourself.
Now then, the method of switching the network from Automatic to Manual sounds promising because if it's actively looking for networks, even though it has already located one, would continue to drain the battery. I will be the guinea pig for this one and report back in about 12 hours (with this problem, my battery won't even last that long lol). I'm also going to set my SMS/MMS settings back to manual as well.
If I uninstall the T-Mobile Hotspot login utility, how would I go about REINSTALLING it?
bah, i thought i had it, but i didnt, i uninstalled the tmobile hotspot utility and this morning i was greeted yet again with 50% battery remaining... i don't know what happen the other night when it didnt drain to 50% but i suspect that it was because i had turn it on once in the middle of the night when i went to the bathroom.

Switched all network modes to manual, left the house at 8:30pm with a 66% charge, got home at 11:30pm with a 32% charge... and I didn't even use the phone!
The odd thing? When I was charging my phone, it said 50%... but once I unplugged it from the charger, it shot up to 66%. Perhaps there's absolutely nothing wrong with the battery and it's just having problems measuring an accurate amount of juice in the battery?
Either way, 10% juice in 1 hour is absurd... this thing is supposed to have a 200 hour idle life and we're not even getting 1/10th of that!
*EDIT* Hmmmm! I just checked my network mode and it went BACK to automatic for some reason! Perhaps it goes back to automatic after a soft reset? Eh...

lol i find it weird that everyone leaves their phones on at night when they goto sleep with the cellular radio blasting out unneccssary radiation, this has gotta be the case since not many ppl noticed this MAJOR flaw with the tmobile wing...! if you were expecting important calls at night then i understand why the phone must be on, but besides this reason, i wonder why the others leaves the cell radio on
Personally, I always charge my phone overnight, because during a days usage I often run it down to 50% to 30%. Thats about 12 hours a day in my pocket, just a few inches away from one of my most important body parts. If you're worried about nighttime radiation, consider this: if you go overnight and only drain 2-3% of your battery, it shows that the unit is transmitting very little, with not a whole lot of that radiation you are worried about. If you are still worried, turn it completely off, it only takes a minute to turn on when you wake up. If you use it as a morning wake up alarm, or have other needs to have it on overnight, try pulling the sim card, see if that helps.

So Verizon swapped it for a refurbished one, Ive had it for 5 days.
It had 2.2 installed when I got it. However the phone is almost useless for me now, It wont last a full day with nothing on, no GPS, no WiFi, no mobile data, no apps running, only turning it on once or twice during the day to check things and each time I do the battery draining like crazy!
I used to get 5 days out of my old phone, literally, because I am not a big user. I actually did play with the phone the day after I received it, to personalize it, and I drained 50% of the battery in an hour!
This is the same battery as in my phone, you dont get a new battery with the replacement.
I think its a hardware problem with the phone, but a guy at work says its just the 2.2 update, that it slams the battery.
Im going to take it back to Verizon tomorrow and see what they will do for me. If they wont fix this, I will simply revert back to my old flip phone since it lasts 5 days and cancel my data plan.
Keep on them to get that one replaced. Something in your hardware is definitely borked.
Even running WiFi hotspot, I don't see anywhere near that kind of drain (50%/hour). At the very worst, my idle drain was about 9%/hour.
This is not a good thing.

You need to make sure your old battery is calibrated to your new phone.
1 - install CWM recovery.
2 - tonight when you go to bed, power off your phone (power off is not screen off). Plug in your charger and charge overnight, USB charging prefered over wall power charging.
3 - in the morning when 100% charged battery is indicated, boot first into CWM recovery and wipe battery stats, after which boot back into Android then you can check for battery longevity again.

Wiping battery stats seems to be a placebo effect. For anyone with serious drain (several % per hour), wiping battery stats does nothing. Its a shame so many threads are corrupted with this misunderstanding when there are other very real sources of battery drain on froyo ROMS.

It's perfectly normal for some people that wiping batterystats.bin did nothing useful, it's also perfectly normal for others to loose 1/3 of battery capacity from being uncalibrated.
It's definitely perfectly normal for some to loose 10% per hour from being uncalibrated.
This kind of variance often confused people.
After doing some experiments, I think its Froyo.
The reason is I turned off mobile data and the battery only drained 2% in 3 hours. Then I recorded some vids of my daughter and played them back with her and over those 3 hours it only dropped 6%. Seems pretty reasonable. I know in my original post I said I had mobile data off, but I realized I actually hadnt, sorry for the confusion.
So I turned on WiFi and GPS overnight and it only dropped 4% overnight.
So something in Froyo is sucking down huge amounts of battery when mobile data is turned on.
Or its still possible its hardware related, that the data radio runs non stop when its turned on, just seems unlikely.
A guy at work suggested turning off data roaming and turning back on mobile data and seeing what it did.
I've had my phone draining at about 10% per hour before, never did figure out what caused the problem. But I flashed back to stock (following the instructions to get ED01 by flashing back to DL09 and then running the update.zips), and that seems to have fixed it. Since 2.2, I've stayed largely stock - stock kernel and just debloated the stock rom. So far, that's what I've found to give the best battery life for me - 48 hours on a charge on average.
Few things to do/keep in mind:
Clearing the battery stats might not solve the problem, but it can't hurt. Charge the phone to 100%, then turn it off but leave it on the charger. Once the powered off battery indicator on the screen shows 100%, boot into CWM and wipe battery stats. Take it off the charger, turn it on and use it normally until the battery gets down to 5% or below. Charge it back up and you're good to go.
Also, give it a few days/battery cycles to come up to full capacity. I seem to notice shorter battery life immediately after a wipe, but after a few days, it's back to the normal 2 days or so between charges.

Definitely seem to be software problem instead of hardware, I suggest leaving everything on -Wifi, GPS, bluetooth, etc... and disable all data sync only one at a time to check for power usage.

Load up Spare parts and see what it says in Battery History. Under 'Other Usage', it should show that running is less than 100% (depending on your usage patterns, this could read anywhere from 10-90%, but it should never show 100%). Do this after having been unplugged for a while.
If running shows 100%, you have a wake lock, which is forcing the phone to be awake 100% of the time, rather than sleeping and using much less power.
You can use dumpsys power from an su terminal or adb to look and see if you have any locks.
If no locks show up, and running still shows 100% (or even if it doesn't) with mobile data on, then there's definitely something wrong with the data radio, and you should have it swapped.
Don't accept any other answer from either phone CSR or in-store rep. No matter how they try and excuse it, constant 10%/hour and up to 50%/hour drain is completely abnormal.

Phone On 0.5%
Wifi On 77.2%
Wifi running 55.6%
Try this, it will tell you what it causing the drain.

Is that with Mobile Data on? Are you still seeing 10%+/hour drain with those stats?
If you're seeing that kind of running time (which is good), and you're still getting huge drain (which is bad), then your phone is broken and needs to be replaced.

Thats total since all time.
So I had the phone all weekend with wifi and mobile data on, then one day with wifi off, then one day with wifi on, mobile data off.
But the battery was consumed the most with everything on, but still very high with wifi off and mobile data on.
Unfortunately a refurbished phone must be returned within 14 days if there is a problem with it. The remaining time on the 1 year warranty is voided.
just use stock rom DI01package3.tar.md5 and battery is very good for me

According to the OP, you've had it for 5 days as of yesterday, which leaves you a full week+ to get it swapped again.

50% in an hour.. even if u use it the whole time is ridicuoulous.. prob a junk batt.. what are batt temps getting to??
There is a setting in the WiFi area to have the WIFI automatically turn off when the phones screen turns off, you may want to look into it

who would actually want to do that.. dude froyo is a million times better.. i get 12-18 hours on heavy use, wifi, data, gps auto rotate all one.. running comm v1.3..

I just want to report that I've been having similar experiences, and in my case it seems associated with signal strength.
If I'm at home all day (where signal is good, and I'm on wi-fi), my battery life is pretty good. Not as good as it was on 2.1, but acceptable.
But if I'm out driving around, or in a place where the 3G signal is weaker (maybe 2 bars or less, but I haven't really verified that), my phone gets uncomfortably warm in my pocket, and battery usage becomes horrible. I've had the phone drain from full charge to 20% or so in less than two hours.
This problem never happened before I flashed the DL30 Froyo leak. Since then, it has happened on every Froyo ROM I've run, including official ED01 and the community ROM.

[Q] Serious Battery Problem

Just this week my phones battery has lost its mind. I use a my touch 4g with the standard battery and had a usual battery life of 12 hours or more easily. Now from this Tuesday I've had a battery life of 4 hours from 100% to 0%. I have to charge the battery 3 times a day. Most of the battery is used when idle for some reason and I've looked at what uses the most battery in spare parts but the app will constantly crash.

I'll tell you what's funny. Is my mom and i have the same phone and we are having the same exact problem that you are mentioning. In fact i have Auto Sync off / GPS off / data ON /and i've lost 12% of my battery in the past 3 hours. My battery usage stats don't look that off. but something is seriously going AWOL.
same issue here on 2x phones.. These seemed to correspond to the radio upgrade i did from the official gingerbread release.
I have since backed out of it, going back to the previous version. However, the issue has seemed to continue.
I have done the following (prob didn't need too, but wanted to cover the bases)
* Wipe cache
* wipe dalvik
* reflash rom
* apply kernel update
... I seem to still be experiencing the severe drain, phone is hot..
I did just notice the cell tower GPS was turned on, i disabled this to see if it helps.
Next step will be to remove the market update i recently did that also corresponds to the problem.
Other then this... i'm at a loss as to wtf...
I updated my radio this morning but I was experiencing the problem before the update so I don't think it was that.
I had that same issue when I updated to the newest radio...ate my battery up like a fat kid in a twinkie factory! So I went back to .09.04, wiped battery stats, calibrated battery with the app, and now my battery life is getting back to normal

Clearing out and resetting gps seems to have yielded positive results on both phones.. battery seems much more stable on both phones

I was thinking about this last night. t-mobile knows what phones we have by IMEI numbers. And since they are pushing the 2.3.4 update out. I wonder if they are pinging our phones trying to get our phone to accept the update. And since we aren't running a recognized ROM it's sending back the information the computer is wanting and thus the cycle continues. Killing our batteries.
Everything on my phone right now is stock and the battery still drains like mad. Last night I left the phone idle at 100% and by my math I was losing 5% every 10 mins so by the time I finished watching two movies without even glancing at the phone my battery was dead. Now I notice that the phone takes about 5 hours to charge as well.
I have been experiencing the same issue since Wednesday. I've wiped, reflashed, changed from cyanogen to virtuous unity. Nothing stops the drain except putting the phone in airplane mode. There is a pretty serious discussion in the t-mobile support forums where a lot of people, both rooted and not, are experiencing the quick drain. It seems t-mobile has acknowledged this to an extent but hasn't issued any statement with any clarity as to why or when it will be fixed. One thing is becoming more apparent though and that is that it seems to be a network issue. Some people have removed google maps and fixed the problem but that didn't work for me.

I posted this in the RG2.1 thread. I have had this fix the drain issue on 2 phones. Please try it, i'm anxious to see if it works for others.
My phone was getting hot near the bottom of the phone, i believe this is where the GPS chip is.
I only have theories as to why the gps could be the issue...

By Putting the device in AirPlane mode you are bypassing the HSPA network. and cutting all ties with it. There HAS to be something pinging our phones. HAS to be.

airplane mode disables ALL of the radios, including gps...
I seriously doubt something is pinging the phone. I don't believe the update check works like that.
^^^^Just tried the above method to no avail. Battery % just dropped another 3 percent in about 15 minutes. This issue seems to be spreading fast. I proudly consider myself a geek but I am stumped as far as knowing what to do. I guess we are at the mercy of t-mobile.
Interesting..... I've noticed the exact same thing the last few days. Normally when I'm at home and my phone is on wifi, I can go to sleep with the phone at around 95% and wake up in the morning and the phone is at around 91% or 92%. Wednesday I woke up and my phone was at 63%, I was shocked. I'm running Royal Ginger 2.1(I've been running it for some time now). So something has changed and I personally don't think it's the ROM. The suggestion about the official gingerbread update from tmobile seems like a pretty good assessment considering its been happening to a lot of people (rooted and non rooted) over the last week.

you can enable Wi-Fi after putting the phone in AP mode. And i have my A-GPS off and GPS radio off, and i'm still having the problem mentioned.

did u try resetting the gps with an app? That seemed to be the ticket for me.
I'm currently running updated maps, market, and radio with so far, a normal battery life.

I had the same battery drain problem for the past few days also. I saw an article on another site about recent battery drain problems for a different T-mobile phone. (i think it was the G2) A few ppl on there named a couple apps that they thought were causing it: the recent Google Maps update, the Market update, and the Google Plus app. So I uninstall the two updates and the Google+ app, let my phone die completely and charged it all the way, with the phone off, uninterrupted.
That was 19 hrs ago and I have 60% left and I've been browsing the web, with wifi on, and playing a few different games for most of the day. I don't know which one of those things fixed it, but I had to be one of them. Before this I was lucky to get through the work day with more than 20% left with little use. Hope this helps some of you fix this.
I was having the same issue and clearing the gps state as mentioned above seems to have worked.
EDIT: This did not work. I was out in a gsm only area so my phone was running on 2g and as soon as I got back to HSPA+ area battery drain started happening again. Might be going to Verizon if this keeps up.

Nexus 4 radio issues, battery issues, constant reboots

I purchased my nexus 4 on release from the Google Playstore (UK) over 2 years ago now, recently updated it to stock 5.01 and have been bombarded with problems.
When using the phone, after about an hour of use it will suddenly ask me to re-input my sim card pin (I'm assuming this is a radio issue). After doing so, more often than not the phone will then just shut down - sometimes with a screeching noise?! At this point the battery still has around 50-60% left, when I then turn the phone on again, the battery suddenly drops and I usually see the figure to around 1-10%. This has required me to charge the phone 2-3 times a day in order for it to function, extremely annoying that the radio seems to fail and not pick up any network signal after the phone drops past 60% battery.
I've attached an image of my battery life to show what I mean about the drop - it's quite frustrating as I've looked after the phone extremely well so I can't understand why these problems are occurring.
Any help would be much appreciated!

To be honest, they all sound like gremlins from old data left in the partitions from the previous OS versions. I am on 5.0.1 and experienced none of those issues, in fact, it runs like butter. I would suggest a full wipe and see if that fixes the issue. Residual data can cause these sorts of random issues.
OP I have the issue with radio after a fresh factory image install. I have signal but cellular data will stop flowing. This is intermittent. Switching to airplane mode sometimes fixes the problem, but sometime I have to reboot. Considering going back to KitKat.
If you using android 5.0.0-5.0.1 - this can be android bags. i have this too it make me crazy!
I managed to get round to rebooting today (had exams lately so literally no time to sort the phone out). Did a factory reset and still the same issues, in fact it's gotten progressively worse since the last time I posted, battery cuts out at around 80% (switched off today at 87%). I get about 40 mins on screen time and bam, shuts down, I'm able to switch it back on in a minute or two, where I then see it down to about 15%. The fact that it's continuously asking me for my sim card pin is insanely frustrating, even more so when it shuts down RIGHT after i put it in.

Android OS - Keep Awake and Mobile Radio Active

Hi,
The Nexus 6P has been pretty good so far on battery. Nothing super insane, but enough to get me through a day.
Max I get is 3 hours SOT when I hit 0%...
Android OS is usually in the top 3, and in a 10 hour day, its getting 2 hours of Keep Awake time and about 30min Mobile Radio Active.
Google Play Services is also getting around 45min Mobile Radio Active as well.
Phone is bone stock, bootloader locked, unrooted. Running a handful of apps, even stopped using my Moto360 and disabled bluetooth when not in use to see if that was the culprit.
Any tips? (or apps that help me delve deeper into Android OS and why it keeps waking the thing up)

Similar situation here - crazy battery drain and "Keep Awake" when I have a sim card in (TMo). 3 hours sitting on my desk - not using it - the phone gets warm/hot and Keep Awake shows 1H 16m under Android OS. When I put the same sim back into my Nexus 5 (using the adapter/converter) the N5 battery is perfectly fine.. normal.. no massive drain.
Any thoughts?
Turn off Wifi and give it a try. See if you still have the same battery drain.

Go into location & uncheck all scanning functions
Thanks. I should have mentioned that I already had wifi and bt turned off, and had turned off scanning for both under Locations. I was trying to isolate this to cell signal as best I could by disabling wifi and bt things. I also tried turning off "Enhanced LTE" - and now I'm trying it with wifi calling on (again just to narrow down different possibilities).
I think a factory reset is in my near future - may as well start from completely scratch and see if I still get the same horrible battery drain.
Just reporting back. I did a factory reset - and INITIALLY I thought I was on to something. Battery life seemed better at first, but then I soon began dropping cell signal - which apparently sends the phone off searching for signal chewing up battery.
In my case it's never ending cycle - get signal, drop, search, get signal, drop search.
Yes, I'm in a fairly weak TMo LTE service area, but my Nexus 5 and my wife's Nexus 4 have never had these sort of massive drain issues.
Also, I was in a major metro area on Sat night and the signal kept dropping as well. I couldn't toggle it back on via airplane mode or the mobile data switch. I finally had to reboot to bring it back - and then it proceeded to drop again. Meanwhile, my wife's N4 had no issues.
I went to TMo on Sunday and swapped out the sim - no change. 6P went from fully charged to completely dead overnight (roughly 1AM to 9AM).
So, at this point I'm wondering if I just have a faulty 6P. I'll be calling Google today to see about an RMA exchange :/

I found that my wifi network was causing doze to not work as good. I turned off wifi at night last night and got better results with just data.
My radio is accounting for 88% percent of my phones battery drain. I was down to 60 percent with about an hour of SoT. Not sure what's going on with my device either. I was about to factory reset but don't want to.
Bums me out when I see people getting 4+ hours. I want that action.
I had the mobile active bug also, very close to getting an iPhone.
I saw in another thread that apps like GasBuddy has been causing wake locks like you describe. The issue may be app related. Rooting and installing a battery monitor app should give you more insight as well as wiping and loading just your basic apps to find the culprit because something is definitely wrong.
I get 6 hr SOT without doing anything special and at night I lose 1%, sometimes none if I only sleep for 5hrs and that's with wifi on.
